I started haying with a hesston windrower, then moved to a disc mower, and finally ended up with a sickle mower. I found that laying hay out flat is the key to good quality hay. I saw a Rowse double bar mower at a farm show last year and wanted to see one run and that’s how I came across your channel. Love seeing that hay fall over. One thing that I found to be super helpful on my mower is changing the guards over to a stub guard. Huge difference. I have not plugged up once since I made the change. Also don’t have to wait for dew to lift off
looks like they work good for you. when we ran mowers we never shut them off at the end of the field. Dad would get mad and say that was harder on them than leaving them on.... interesting how differant people think and do things....still gets the same end result
I like those twin bar mowers, nice and simple, lays the grass out flat.... I looked at a 9 wheel single rake like yours once and should have bought it as a back up or for raking bottom ground because my V-Rake just cant handle the volume!
LVF & Northern Wisconsin Farming Yea, really the only maintenance is greasing often, and changing knives, guards and wearplates. Everything else is pretty durable and can take a pounding... But something will go out sometime on the old mower heads!
we ran two 7ft sickle mowers.grampa ford 860..I used farmall 300.we can 10 acres every evening.he always had orange serbert. ice cream when we got done..thanks for the memories. .
Awesome video! The Dakotas...windiest place on earth I swear! lol Lived in SD for a couple years. Beautiful area. Much different country than where I call home here in rural SE WI.
That is the first mower i have seen in action for more than 40 years. Discbines dont work in your area? I think you are in ND if i am correct. That reminds me of my grandfather, no cab and mower, brings back memories. Great video.
two mowers is the way to get stuff done! we've been using 2 hesston hydro swings for years now, thinking about adding a third. two is more stuff to keep going but chances are when one breaks down you still have one working. hope you have a great hay season. too wet to start the season for us here in south east montana, but we'll be going soon.
john owen been slow here lately too, anonther round of small rain squalls moved through all weekend, probably hit it hard this week as it does look drier for the forecast.
Maybe it's my area, but using a sickle bar only seems like claiming wheel rakes are a great idea.... and then I see you whip out a wheel rake... and do what everyone in my family had done with our old wheel rake, run it into something. I don't miss it. I don't like disc mowers, but I have found the reel and conditioning rolls to do wonders for our wetness. Are ya gonna tell me next that you no till with a shoe planter, no disk openers? haha
Love our New Holland 451 mower, it uses the same pivot drive and everything as your Rowse. I'm actually overhauling our spare this week and just ordered parts from Shoup and Messicks.
Thats we do run two discmowers two tractors you cant run those down here heavy hay terraces steep rough ground but you will like running two especially with your doubles you can knock down lots of ground and get it drying so much faster now you won't know how to do hay with one mower again it will be like raking your hay and then switching and baling it I know you know how long that takes
Nice video and I like the set up and how many acres can u cut in a day with that set up and how much do they cost about and how many acres was that field u all was cutting and have a nice day
why do yall prefer this type of mower over a discbine that you can get 12 or 13 foot like is there a better quality side of it keeps more seed on the hay until watching your vids i had never seen these used on a modern farm so just wondering
I'd assume it because they are in North Dakota where is it quite dry, 5-12 inches of rain a year meaning the grass crop has few cuttings, less volume per cut and chances of it getting rained on are low. Sickle bars also require less horsepower which means smaller tractors can be used, thus further reducing costs. Most people transitioned to disc mowers because of the conditioners, ability to run over already cut down hay and ability to better cope with wet, heavy hay.
Ok , I was wondering because we are needing a new hay mower because my great grandpa recently passed away and my papa got some hay land as his inheritance and our old mower is way to small for that land! And by the way thank you!

Ted Kahler old ranch formen said he had 2 conditions when running mowers under him. Don’t turn left and don’t turn off.

LVF & Northern Wisconsin Farming yep, that's one thing about sicklebars is really no need for tedding, but it does have its own drawbacks as well.
Farming 4G yes! Each method does! But at least you method is simple and relatively easy and cheap to repair compared to the others!
LVF & Northern Wisconsin Farming Yea, really the only maintenance is greasing often, and changing knives, guards and wearplates. Everything else is pretty durable and can take a pounding... But something will go out sometime on the old mower heads!
You made me have to rewind to see that you change rakes, good one Brooks.
Powerfl Farm Yea went from the old 6-wheel to the 9-wheel lol... Always trying to compact the video down.

That was pretty neat to see you guys cutting down the hay!!
Interesting seeing mowers still getting used
Still quite popular in our region, but also see lots of disc and haybines too.
@@farming4g pretty neat haha!

cj402061 jack disc mowers work fine, just get more use out of the bar mowers.

Floyd Farms Yep, rowse uses new Holland heads... They also have another head thats a hydraulic drive, I think theyre made by case ih division.

How wide are 2 of sikle bars alone? And how much horse power do they have?
Nice vid
Nice video and I like the set up and how many acres can u cut in a day with that set up and how much do they cost about and how many acres was that field u all was cutting and have a nice day
If I can do the maths correctly.... if taking ~18' and going between 4-4.5 MPH... might be around 8-10 acres/hour for one mower?
Farming 4G I gotcha and thanks for responding have a nice day
Those sickle bars are crazy big. Do you need to spread the hay after to dry or is that one of the benefits of using a sickle bar ? Thanks.
august no tedding needed with sicklebars, unless maybe the crop is very heavy it might be useful.
Farming 4G, I thought that but figured I would ask an expert on the subject. Thanks.

i take it you dont need conditioning to dry the hay?!
Jon Stevens Maple Grove Farms some guys do on the irrigation pivots... Anywhere else is really not needed, but do see some... Depends on the soil type
Now that's bad@ss
We run 5 18 ft bar mowers
What kind of a hay rake are you running
Rowse vrake
Seeing any broods of pheasants?
The g&f said population is up about 6% from last year... But I have hardly seen any so far. Past 2 winters and springs have been very tough
What about drum mower or even beter a disc mower ?
ua-cam.com/video/6LEAWwapohA/v-deo.html
How long are those cutting bars ???
markd8405t5000 9 feet each so 18 foot per trailed mower, with both tractors going should be able to do 36 feet in one pass.
Where is your farm located at
South central NoDak
How much do one of those rowse mowers cost ?
Varies.... around $17k to 23K. I paid 18k for mine in 2017
Ok , I was wondering because we are needing a new hay mower because my great grandpa recently passed away and my papa got some hay land as his inheritance and our old mower is way to small for that land! And by the way thank you!
What width cut is it
18'
how horse power does the mowers require
C6 Farms very little. The little ts100 is 80 PTO I think and has no trouble
Why do u use siclbar mowers?
Robby Bachmann just get more use out of them for our operation
The agcollege at home did testing with sickle vs disc, the result was alf alfa recovered quicker. I certainly enjoyed dropping hay like that.
Why is laying the hay flat important?
dont look like theres very much grass there
George Costanza light, sandier soil has that effect.
What's your head per acre
Not even sure. If have excess hay we sell it.
@@farming4g how many head of cattle can you run per acre ours is 1 cow/calf per 1 1/2 acre
Do discbines not work in your Area ?
Aaron Jarvenpa They work fine, just get more use out of mowers like this.
Doesn’t look like the best rake foe that job
That going back and forth with the camera is most irritating.
Needs a mirror...
