SIX NATIONS: TEAM (and PLAYER) of the TOURNAMENT???

- With the dust settled on a brilliant Championship, here's my thoughts on the best XV from all players of all 6 teams, and a Top 3 countdown of the best individual in this years competition.
MY BENCH (to round out the 23):
16. MARCHAND
17. BAILLE
18. BEALHAM
19. R. GRAY
20. CROS
21. WHITE
22. RUSSELL
23. KEENAN
IN A PREVIOUS VIDEO YOU SAiD ULSTER IS NORTHERN IRELAND ITS NOT ITS 66% OF ULSTER , DONEGAL MONAGHAN AND CAVAN ARE 3 COUNTIES OUT OF THE 9 COUNTIES THATS IN ULSTER AND THOSE 3 ARE PART OF THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND 🇮🇪
I‘d have JGP instead of White. White was brill but Jammo is on a different level, was defo PotM v England behind Sheehan.
I'd definitely take JGP over White on the bench - I see Dupont as a Scrum Half Plus Plus; as a pure SH he isn't leagues ahead of JGP or Captain Underpants (Faf De Klerk), but he's clear 1st pick as he can fill any gap the team needs whilst fully performing as a world class SH. I reckon he could put in a test-quality shift as any backs player or 2/6/7/8 in the forwards given the chance 😂 (I think JGP has a bit of 'plus' in him too - but Faf is still the gold standard for the pure SH role for me)
How could you not put an Irish player in the top 3, that's a shocking top 3. How Dan Sheehan isn't in that is flabbergasting. Mentioning Freddie Stewart at 15 when he hasn't read the rules of tackling
@@briankean7153 SHOUT MORE!
Mack Hanson had an unbelievable tournament. Showed up at big points both in attack and defence. Scored a couple of brilliant tries, set up some more and had one big poach. Definitely will be in the conversation for Irish player of the tournament.
Hansen was excellent against Scotland but had a terrible game against the French. He was the worse player on the field that day. Loads of unforced errors and I lost count of the amount of times he chased up and unders only to miss the subsequent tackle on the receiving player.
@@PB22559 What are you talking about. I’m Irish and was never a huge fan of his selection However, he has won me around and in the argument for Irish player of the tournament (Hugo Keenan for me). Solid in attack and defence.
@@PB22559 go back and look at ramos and fickou made a few gaffs during the games also. What about hansons catch over big VdM and his offload to sexton that resulted in a try. I'd have him in there over VdM all day.
@@johngibson540 And what has any of that got to do with what i ACTUALLY said? Hansen was GREAT against the Scots.
Watch the French game again and pay attention to Hansens performance. He was awful.
@@pilgrim3387 You obviously have trouble with basic reading comprehension. I said Hansen was 'EXCELLENT' against Scotland.
Why are even you bringing up Fickou? I didn't even mention him.
It’s always hard to pick players to make the team of the tournament but I think you nailed it pretty good. Just like you I don’t see any players from Wales England or Italy, and I’m glad to see Scotland back on track for a couple years. As a French, I will have to disagree with you about the player of the tournament. To me Flament was clearly the best player of that French team this year, such a steady player, he played every game 80 mn, that’s crazy for a second row, he scored 3 tries, has the 2nd tackles made record of the tournament (26/26 against Ireland, wow!), he was just impressive with everything he did. And he’s a very good guy! Anyway, thanks for your video, can’t wait for the World Cup now! Cheers! (Hope my English is correct!)
3 French players of the tournament yet Ireland won the Grand Slam is an interesting take.
Agreed, probably the most entertaining but ireland as a team work better
Hogg won it twice I don't recall Scotland winning the 6N trophy
Dupont & Sexton is a scary combination. The best player in the world being guided by the best tactical brain.
100% sry, 101%.
Only positions I would change are Baille for Porter (Porter conceded the most penalties in the tournament) and then Keenan for Ramos. Keenan I believe ran the most metres in the championship while also being significantly better than Ramos in defence stopping a few tries over the course of the championship against Wales and Scotland from my memory. I'd also put the scottish 12 in for Jones and put Fickou back to 13 but thats definitely a 50/50.
The top 3 players were Dupoint. Keenan and Doris imo. Olivion was good but far from the 2nd best in the tournament, got schooled by the boys in green and was very poor vs Italy
I agree about your take in Keenan having been better than Ramos and i'm French nevertheless.
Ramos has been pretty good attacking wise with superb goal kicking but defensively he's been too much of a liability
The big thing I took from a Scotland perspective was 😢that in the games against France and Ireland in crucial moments in both games we failed to score because we were over eager. When you look at Ireland they make their pressure into points, no matter how many times the recycle . Dupont was a joy to watch , WC should be a fantastic watch .
Serious recency bias on that top 3 from the English game.
Dupont is the player of the tournament and that's coming from an Irish person. After that is Caelen Dorris and toss a coin between Keenan and Penaud for third.
Agree in general, but left wing by a country mile in this tournament for me was Mack Hansen, he was literally everywhere. Full back, I would have to go Keenan, he was outstanding against France. Other than that I would agree with you especially about Dupont, he is something special and it is a privilege to watch him play for club and country
A game between your combined and a combined team from the southern hemisphere would be a great watch.
🔥
Be a great game but at present the NH would comfortably win
@@shaneoballs not sure about comfortably. Ireland’s success is built on understanding the system and always being in the right place... that would change in a scratch game.
@@paulmulryne8405 fair point, perhaps. Both teams would be in similar situations though and the semi hem has very divergent approaches too mixing SA and NZ would likely result in mayhem
Great team! - I would switch Van der Merwe out for Hansen and Ramos out for Keenan (but I am Irish after all)
Irish imposter 😂😂😂
I would sneak Capuozo in for VdM,
Because Ireland know how to expose VdM....and I just want to see Capuozo play!
My only gripe is number 15, Keenan really should have made it in my opinion but it is close and I'm biased, it says a lot for ireland that there is an ireland player to mention at every single position
Well I would give the "best 6 nations ever" badge to all teams and players! What an exceptional level overall, so many thrilling games. Mention to Italy, even if they finished last, they have shown some cool rugby, far from being the sitting ducks from the past. Can't wait for the world cup, give us more!
I saw Dupont play against Ulster for Toulouse. Incredible. Hurts me still.
I worked at that game! Heart breaking but inevitable. Special player.
I'm Irish and I think I would have gone with baille and cros. I don't think there's that much between Ireland and France.
Same. Baille ahead of everyone
Baille at 1 and Keenan at 15, I like the rest of the picks
Personally I thought baile had his quietest championship of the galthie era. Still an absolutely phenomenal player
And Caelan Doris 8 not 20!
I agree with you, I love Ollivon, he is so pleasant to watch. He reminds me of Lawrence Dallaglio : always classy with a great presence.
New to the channel, I thought your 6 nations coverage was excellent and looked forward to your daily updates and will again during the World Cup.
It's a close one but I'd have Russell in at 10 instead, he had an injury for racing the week before the Ireland game which he ended up going off injured for towards the end of the game. But in the three games prior to that he was world class and at the end of the tournament is still ahead of Sexton in almost every key stat (tries, assists, metres made, carries, passes, tackles broken, offloads and tackles made) and scored only 3 points less while playing in a weaker team.
He's also ahead of Sexton in every negative stat
Van Der Merwe is a brilliant attacking weapon but defensively can be very poor.
Baille must be in. Cheers from Ireland 🇮🇪 and thanks for your 6N cover. I think home advantage was all that separated us from France. Shout out to young Nthamak. Awesome player
Nah Ireland were way better
France could have lost against
Italy and Scotland they were cracking
The difference between France and Ireland in Paris last year was no Sexton! This year Ireland way better
@@sharronwood2823 I think Ireland
Showed other teams that France
Are very beatable
@@dbcooper8676 I think that France weren't fit and ready at the start of the tournament and that the game in Ireland actually helped them fix some strategic issues. Just look at how they played against Italy compared to England or Wales. And they got Cros and Danty back at the end, both made a terrific impact for the team. What they did in England will go down in history. However Ireland are just so consistent, so hard to say. I just think that France will be so much fitter at the world cup, and with the home advantage they will be favourite in my opinion.
@@08padam yes you are right
But I still think Ireland were way better we handily beat Wales and France, beat Italy with the second
Team, beat Scotland in a game
Against impossible odds, beat
England under pressure that was
Off the charts for what was on the
Line, bravo the boys in green 10/10
Legends they are.
Dont know if you saw my comment on one of your previous videos about taking a look at the Under 20s competition. It was also excellent quality and worth looking at for future upcoming talent. France, England, Italy and Ireland seem to have a good crop of young players. Slightly worrying for Scotland and Wales, they had a poor competition and looked to be quite a bit behind the other countries.
All three best players French? No Caelan Doris or Dan Sheehan?
Doris went off early vs Scotland at the lineout where Scotland used the wrong ball.
Keenan didn’t make it. No way. And Doris not in top 3, not better than Flament, even Ollivant. In the match up against Ireland, 1-1, what did they do? Dupont, no question there. Shocking!! You were right on the money up until no. 15 and then went off the rails 😀😀. But thanks for the effort throughout the 6N, much appreciated.
Your comment is not clear - are you saying that Doris shouldn't be in Eggchasers selection for the team of the tournament?
@@fawltyoldboybasil.2178 read the comment - “Doris not in top 3”
@@fawltyoldboybasil.2178 He's saying he should be in the Top 3, which he clearly should despite a quiet last game. France put 50 on England but lost against Ireland largely due to Doris tearing them a new one.
@@Camcolito Thank you for clearing that up. Doris was the best #8 in this tournament.
Great vid, always enjoy these achievement reviews.
Great to see 3 Scots on yr 15 :)
All good apart from full back as Hugo Keenan is by far the best 15 in world rugby
Thanks for that Tim would largely agree with you team except though Keenan was better full back , otherwise would concur .I do wonder if the games had fallen in a different order would We have won but it does set up the World Cup up . Roll on April and let’s see if Leinster can get their fifth star !
Think Mack Hansen has to be mentioned, played so well, arguably Irelands best player at the Tournament.
Hansen also gave the most entertaining interviews and quotes 😊
@@DeusExMamiya “Faaaark!”
Ireland's best player was sexton. By a millions miles. Not cos he finished trys or came up with a poach here or there.
ut because he led the team. In every crucial moment. He's ridiculously important.
@@fomora12 Naa M8, Dupont will get that and he'll deserve it.
keenan to be fair is deffo in the conversation. But Dupont is supernatural. Ya just got to appreciate him. Regardless of nationality
That was James Ryan. Played every minute and dominated every game
Had it all spot on most of the way, could make a few arguments about the backs, but what a team
As a one eyed Kiwi I found this interesting as, 6 French 6 Irish 3 Scots spot on dude, so glad NH are so much more competitive these days, boy the RWC is going to be a ding dong battle for sure can't wait. 😊😂
Not gonna lie, it's a frankly damn good team. Hard to argue against any of your picks.
Also, I agree 100% with your take on Dupont. When it comes to players who are absolute monsters, redefine what you expect from a player in position XYZ, first there was Lomu, now there's Dupont. Scrum halves will be compared to him for decades to come.
Actually and paradoxally, i wouldn't advise a young scrummie to copy DuPont but rather guys like A.Smith or Gregan.
DuPont is really one of kind (not the least in his superhuman strength for his size and his insane ability to brush off tackes) and actually not even a true scrummie most of time but more like a guy who is at the same time a world class 9, a world class backrower, a world class 10 and a world class centre without necessarily being the best in any of those position.
You see the picture.
@@financialliberty2381 Good point. I also agree with Dupont being world class at other positions : tackles like a back rower, runs like a winger etc. That being said, I'm pretty sure young 9's around the globe try and emulate him, and coaches are taking notes too.
Video Idea: It would be cool to see your opinion on a 'Most Disappointing' XV of the Six Nations.
Not necessarily the worst players but the players who lived up to their expectations the least.
Just put the England XV in
@@FullTimeThistle You beat me to it!!😂
I'd have to go with keenan full back. VdM not sure on the wing. Going forward he's good but defence not so. Look at hanson not half the size as VdM but winning turnovers.
Based on your selection you have to wonder how Ireland won the Grand Slam.
2:55 Not to mention we used to have Bernard le Roux as a starter at 4, with his very consistent 15-20 tackles per game, although his career has been in question due to repetitive injuries and concussions playing for Racing 92, which would be a shame after losing Vakatawa
No Irish player in your top 3?
Not even Josh VDF - played full 400 minutes and stood in as lineout thrower.
struggled at times especially against England and France.
@@1477wales4 like all those three players struggled against Ireland and Italy.
I appreciate its 'player/team of the tournament', although I think it would be fair to say, that should some of the players be wearing different shirts, how we judge those players would change.
For example: If Itoje was playing for Ireland and Ryan for England, who would 'look' the better of the two?
Thanks Tim,
Chris.
itoje had a shocking tournament ngl
You think itoje had a better tournament than ryan??
- 400 min played
- 2 Tries
- 5.2m per carry
- 97% tackle completion (1st of players with 60+ tackles)
- 6 Dominant tackles (joint 4th)
- 5 Turnovers won (joint 1st)
- 1 Turnover won in the tackle
- 5 Lineout steals (1st, next highest is 2)
@@higuk999 No, I don't.
IF Itoje was playing in a better team (Ireland) and Ryan was in a lesser team (ENG) one would look better due to the superior system and the other worse.
Even with that said, it still doesn't mean Itoje would have been the better of the two (maybe, maybe not), but playing in a better team/system will allow anyone to play to a higher standard.
@@Nova-zz8fh Nothing to do with my point. And its nothing to do with Itoje or Ryan. They were examples of two players. It would apply to any player.
@@secondchance4498 if itoje had an outstanding tournament then he would be up for player of the tournament regardless of the team he is on
As an Ireland fan I want to give major kudos to Genge, a shining light in an otherwise lacklustre England team.
Great pick, I like the idea of having Ollivon back in, he is such a quiet but ever present player.
Your colleague @two cents takes the challenge of picking one player per team victory, which I find a fun challenge. It would go 5 Ire 4 fra 3 sco etc.
Difficult to disagree. Who would be on the bench?
Baille, Marchand, Bealham, Richie Gray, Doris, Ben White, Russell, Keenan
At least a XV of the Tournament that I totally agree with! Nothing to add
Loved your comments dont think there is much between France and Ireland it will be all on the day in the world cup and the best thing I think from now until then is for coaches to concentrate on coaching the high tackling out of their players because it is clear that in the heat of battle it is easy to get it wrong even if you dont mean it I feel it is going to be a huge problem in the world cup I see how it needs to be tackled as the safety of the players is paramount Take the red card on Saturday it was harsh and mitigation was not considered but at the end of the day James Ryan got hit and that was the end of his match plus the fact that he has had problem with concussions before look forward to following you come the world cup.
Keenan has to be fullback in my opinion
France also have the exclusive access to their players for two months before the tournament. Something Ireland enjoy 52 weeks of the year. Not sure how Ireland can possibly get better whereas France possibly/ probably have 10% extra in S&C alone.
Very good point not to mention the freshness factor will also play a part cause French players are of course over the year less fresh than their Irish counterparts who play much less games.
The 3 months preparation will even up things in that regard

Good point!
Top 3 players of the tournament being French is very suspect man...
Thanks Tim and yes Sheehan is amazing. I have always been a fan; is he a hooker or strongest winger with pace? .so versatile .. he is two men on the field .... Ireland's greatest try in Ireland's greatest game, third test in Wellington, Sheehan to Sexton to Aki to Henshaw ... but it was Sheehan's back pass that left the AB's stunned. France seem to benefit here largely from putting 50 on England, for which there are no prizes.
Now we can literally create a world rugby dream team with just irish and french players AHAHAH
Great selection first......though I have a feeling you picked alot French based on their performance against England, they were only average in the other 4 games.....
Lowe Hansen both better than dhvm over the whole tournament. Dhvm was nullified against Ireland and not great against Italy. Keenan over Ramos too
Someone described DuPont as “bullshit level skillful” and yeah… that’s the best description
Yep I like that !
I feel Russell has moments like that too, but sometimes he misses the move.

Lions pack would be the Irish pack at present, to make an argument for anyone else they’d have to be a lot better than the Irishman who has settled into the pack. Definitely no Welshman, hard to see an Englishman, fagerson and Dempsey outside shouts. Great 6 nations and outstanding play from Ireland and France and Scotland to be fair to them, was a shame Italy didn’t bring their A game v wales
great choice - youve the most interesting rugby commentry channel on utube
I’d have Lowe instead of van Der merwe he has been stupidly good
Dupont MVP for sure
really ? in a Six Nations where Ireland Won The GrandSlam your gonna pick Dupont ????
@@kurtpunchesthings2411it's a collective sport.
Put DuPont into that Irish team and they trash prozvsbly everyone by 5/6 tries
On their showings in this 6 nations England and especially wales are very lucky not to have Scotland as the 3 rd team in their group
Don't have many disagreements with your selections, however I'm surprised that yourself and other rugby analysts/journalists have made little to no reference to the Scottish loosehead. He was massively impressive with his carrying and poach threat (I'm an Irish fan in case anyone thinks I'm being biased)
On a completely separate note I'd love to see a video how the English underage academies/talent development works and how successful the premiership teams are in developing young talent compared to just buying in established players
The terrifying thing about Penaud is he's just always there, lurking to get on the end of a pass or crossfield or popping up on a shoulder in midfield and despite not being overly physical despite his size, he always seems to get out of a tackle. The geezer is just inhuman...
Baba Yaga
What about Dombrandt at number eight? Yes I know... but we kept picking him
I think the team of the tournament was Ireland - no? 😂 Good picks thanks.
Dupont is obviously the best at 9. Though Gibson Park has been essentiall for Ireland and the drop of between him and Murray is insane. Gibson Park is so fast
Not sure about Van Der Merwe his poor defence and awful decision making literally cost Scotland the game against Ireland
Over all the games, Doris for me makes the top 3 at least, Mack H not far behind, you have to remember that France lost to Ireland and were not that impressive in the earlier games, but pretty good selection overall, Genge was possibly the only English player you could have looked at over all the matches.
Good selection and I understand all of your picks but Mack Hansen was POTM in 3 of his 5 matches and VDM was found out defensively on a number of occasions
Van der Merwe is great going forward but a dreadful defender.
I agree that. VdM is not the greatest defender but the only team to expose him was Ireland when he bit in too early. That should be fixable but what he adds in attack more than compensates for his deficiencies
Van De Merve is not a good enough defender to be on this team. Lowe is my 11.
Porter had an unwanted record this tournament - most penalties given away. Schoemann should be an honourable mention - Scotland were a totally different side without him on the pitch. Fischetti would be my pick at Loose head - huge in every game for Italy
Great selection
Great selection....
5:30 Aldritt had only 12 minutes against Scotland because of Haouas' red card, he was then replaced by Falatea.
Tadgh Beirne I think very unlucky with injury, on form was the best 2nd row/6 of the six nations when playing. Honourable mention perhaps. Don’t know if I would agree with all top 3 players being French when comfortably beaten by Ireland. I’d have Ringrose as top 3 and obviously in the team. Good debate though and liking your videos. Keep it up!
Ringrose was superb, but he was out for a good chunk of the 6N, so I don't think he could be picked.
You alluded to the selection problems facing current and future makeups of national teams, and again it’s Ireland and France making the running with incredible bench strength in the U20 category. They’re all great matches and deserving of wider audiences yet a little worrying for those who hope their national squad might get better in the short term. Wales U20 gave up ten tries the the French U20 squad. Only Italy could take some comfort that their U20 talent pipeline might yield results based on the 2023 showing.
Not often I disagree with you . But come on no Ireland player in top 3 😮 Keenan best 15 by a mile and a half 👍😮😮😮

Nailed the whole pack. After JVDF, Lamaro beats Crox for me though. The back line stats were pretty influenced by results against England which was Irelands worst game of the tournament. I think if Ireland had of done a number on England, Lowe, Hansen and Keenan, could have easily replaced their French counterparts in that lineup because in their head to head they shaded their French opposites. PS loved your coverage of the 6N.
And England played completely differently against ireland than they did france, England left it all out there that last match, though it has to be said ireland didn't play near their best
If you were picking a Lions team now, how many English and Welsh are in it? My guess is not many.
hmmmm yea it would be very Ireland and Scotland lopsided that's for sure lol
Zero
Ask the same question in 2019 and it's a very different story. Peaks and troughs, every team has them.
No kennan???
Player off the tournment james ryan really awesome player
On the English players closest to a team of the tournament I'd say Genge, Chessum, Ludlam, Willis, Lawrence and Steward, personally. Lawrence and Chessum have been one of the great positives of this 6N. We actually have options at centre now... Finally.
Can't nominate any English player for team of the tournament after that France game
