I will ALWAYS stay to the end, because it's pure gold! Could totally relate, Cas. A number of years ago, I was working the reception table at my 40th high school reunion. In the adjacent ballroom in the same building, another school was having their 50th reunion. A woman approached the registration table and I didn't recognize her. Rather than ask her name or just ask if she was there for our reunion, I said, "I believe you must want the (other school's) 50th reunion." She looked at me strangely and asked, "Isn't this (our school) Class of 1979? I'm so-and-so." I was mortified, but truth be told, to me she looked at least 10 years older than I think I look (perhaps I'm delusional), and I quickly apologized and excused myself to go get a drink at the bar. Meanwhile, the other person working the registration table with me was cracking up and has never let me live it down. Not sure I'll go to the next reunion, but one thing's for certain: I will NOT be working the registration table! :)

Thanks to you I'm embracing being a cricket. I've hidden nearly everything, even the Kleenex box, and I feel so much better! I used to believe some things "needed" to be out on display for practical purposes, but they don't if they're just as easy to access when they're hidden. Now I only display things I find beautiful and I love my home even more. Thank you for all your advice, Cas!
And thanks for the laugh 🙈

Ditto! I am a cricket but incredibly practical so hate hunting for things. It took me four or five tries to organise my craft and DIY supplies because I simply didn't have space for them all. I was so frustrated by all the mess that was spilling everywhere, but after some serious decluttering, I can now find everything and it's out of sight at last! My Kleenex are still out on a bookshelf, but in a wooden box with a hinged lid, cos the tissue poking out the top always irritated me, but hay fever means they need to be out 🤩

I used to be an art model, and I always spent a couple of hours doing my hair and makeup for every session. Realised the other day that my glass container drawer is always full so I don’t use all of them at once so I don’t need all of them in there. I thought I go through there regularly but still found lids without containers. Ugh. So I’ve just got 2 of each and 3 of the big ones in there now. Feels like scarcity mindset at the moment but I’ll get there. The fact that the drawer below is full of plastic containers isn’t giving me comfort. It’s a long haul changing the mindset when you’re single and how much you need. ❤

They were walking hand in hand, so I assumed they were a couple. I offered to take their pictures in exchange for them taking mine since I was traveling with my kids. While we were taking photos, I kept suggesting poses like hugging and kissing, thinking they were a romantic couple. My opinion: I think that you are excellent friend material ❤. I would just explain that your brain gets wonky at times and says the wrong words and that when you heard yourself say mother instead of sister you were mortified and embarrassed because it wasn’t the word you actually meant and you saw her getting upset. If she is good neighbour material she will learn to laugh it off and laugh with you. My brain does things like that in awkward situations too. Years ago, while running a visiting 8th grade wilderness class trip we played the game two truths and a lie to get everyone a bit more comfortable with each other. I was one of the first to go and one of the 3 statements I made was “I was a surrogate mother to 3 baby howler monkeys” … a moment of silence passed as I realized that I hadn’t said “adoptive mother” and said “oh that’s not what I meant!” And everyone started laughing 🤣 one girl said “ I thought that you were just a really bad liar”. Needless to say it broke the ice and everyone was so much more comfortable because no 8th grader had to worry about saying something stupid 😊
Embrace your awkwardness it is part of our human charm 😊

For family things, I’m a bee.
For personal things, I’m a ladybug.
I guess it’s weird to be opposites? But it makes so much sense to me for my things to be hidden (because I’m a mom of little kids) and quick to put away.
But for things like dishes or bathroom stuff or clothes or the pantry that everyone is using, it needs to be very visual, and everything needs a very specific place to go so everyone using it knows where to find it, and I always have a specific place to put it away (and I know what’s missing if a spot is empty)
For kids things, less inventory matters the most for us. I labeled bins and put them on a shelf up high, so they have plenty of floor space to play, and they have to ask for specific bins and put the things back in them before I’ll give them another one. Saves me sooo much grief, because I’m not ever asking them to manage all that inventory all at once.

I started doing that in 2017, with incredulity, when I rage-decluttered my home over the course of 6 weeks. I had always kept everything on the bathroom counter (which is tiny) and hated that it not only was very cluttered, but it made the counter dirty way faster. And guess what, it stuck immediately, and never felt like a chore in the least. As a mom of four I would recommend to only keep the newborn size in the dresser. Put the other clothes in separate bins on a top shelf in the closet organized by size. Hang dressy clothes, fold casual. Put lotions, wash cloths... next to diapers in the top drawer or changing table. Bedding, blankets on the bottom of the dresser. Toys in a canvas basket on the floor. Not sure about bottles since I never used those. Diaper bag - changing pad, diapers, wipes and a change of clothes for each kid. Restock after the trip that way you are ready to go next time and are not running late.

Maybe the answer then, is to be as simple as is reasonable, in how you organize, keeping in mind what works for *you* and how much stuff you own? If you line-up with what is usually possible on your difficult days, then you can maintain that level on days that are easier.

My recommendation would be to find plenty of things he can do for you, so you can feel proud about cleaning up after him. You don’t have to be good at the same things, but he has to contribute in other ways or you’ll feel resentful doing what is natural to you instead of loving and empowered. Your skill is organizing, and you deserve to use your skills and feel great about it. He deserves the same. It’s not his skill, so what are you maybe not letting him do that comes naturally for him to do more of?
If he can’t equalize with you, find someone you can life peacefully with and feel excited instead of overwhelmed at the idea of having a family with. You deserve that!

He's very much a minimalist but I am maximalist due to my incessant adoption of new hobbies. I want our two styles to live in harmony and this is why your organization tips are going to save our relationship. For real, you are going to singlehandedly prevent a break up 😂. 🐞🐞🐞❤ you have really helped me discover that in my 57 years I’ve been doing it wrong. I’ve always been the type of person that can sit and organize the tiniest things in the most new categories for hours and be so happy. But was always overwhelmed in trying to keep things organized that way… Because deep down I’m a ladybug.‼️🐞🐞🐞 I had a file cabinet and would create detailed categories for everything! But then in maintaining it, I would stack everything in piles until I could put everything away properly… Which never happened and then I could never find anything😮 so to use the terminology of today… I was always trying to organize for my fantasy self🐞🐞🐞

I think you would be a great friend! I so sympathize with your ‘foot in mouth’ situation - I’ve been there many times! She’s probably embarrassed, too, if she had a knee-jerk overreaction. The sooner you can say something to make amends, the less awkward it will be - since you live in the country, there probably won’t be a back-to-school block party or something to say hi at, but try to find an opportunity asap. I’ve found a fast “Hi, it’s great to see you again! Listen, I just wanted to say I’m so sorry about what I said the last time we met - I was focused on groceries, and my brain wasn’t fully engaged at the time” works well - often they don’t remember what embarrassing thing I said or did, or at least pretend not to! And macro organizers DO use filing cabinets - we pile things on top of them that should be filed inside them, often for upwards of two or three years.😁

I think you are going to have to speak to her about it, to clear the air, and bake her a cake or something, as someone else suggested on here! Very embarrassing. I love all your things you put up on walls to hold things, the only problem I have is that I have very little wall space. I am a butterfly, so I have lots of bits and bobs everywhere, which I love, but too much stuff I know. But I keep on watching you, as you do inspire me to sort things out, thank you. xxx

4:29 The observation that if something's not easy to put away, it will just be put down, is so true. To take it a step further, if something doesn't have a place TO be put away, it will just be put down. If you find yourself constantly putting a certain kind of thing down, rather than away, stop and ask yourself, "Where does this even go?" If you don't have a ready answer, that might be part of the problem.
One question I have: what do you do when people in the house have different organizing styles, i.e. one is visual, while one is hidden? Is there a good way to merge the two, or does it just become a question of negotiation as to whose style gets to dominate a given space?

My struggle is that I have the aesthetic of a cricket but my lived reality is a butterfly. I *do* butterfly things, but I don't *want* to organize that way. I want clean, clear surfaces with no visual noise and just a few carefully selected beautiful things on display, but that's not what I find myself doing! Argh! I don't like busy spaces but that's what I have, and if I put things away hidden I forget about them. Macro organizing is more practical for me, but then I get frustrated that it's not organized enough when I want to find something. 😞

    • @celticlass8573

I think you can work with that, if you take time and really think about how you do things. Wanting to do it a certain way but always falling back to another way, probably indicates you need to combine organizing ways. I'm a ladybug, but it doesn't apply to everything in my life, out of necessity. Maybe start with the items that you find are the worst offenders, and figure out an organizing system for them first? It's worth thinking about them in detail. Is it your more immediate to-do things for example? What are they? What do you need, to make sure you don't forget about them, but that will deal with that particular clutter?

I think I have been watching your videos a lot, I haven't figured out the name for each style, I just don't remember, but I always recommend your channel to people that asks about organization and why its not working for them. A few days ago I watched this tv show about some people renovating a house, and when they got back a few months later as the house was finished I couldn't help but think what critter they were when seeing their over cluttered refrigerator when everything else was so organized and no clutter what so ever it was so visible and I thinked to myself that their hidden organization would eventually fail as it was so obvious that they would need open baskets and such as you tell about. Your system is actually idiot proof, no doubt about it, and that's why I keep recommending people to take your little test so they to can get the craft space they want as this is usually the people asking for help. People will recommend this bin and that shelving system, but what works for them might not work for other people, and the most creative ones tend to be those who don't care to open the drawer or put the lid back on those pretty jars. I'm that type that do this and I like it, but I figured out that my mom needs open baskets or bins, but she can have them in a closet, she doesn't like things laying around except for her piles that always lies around. I made her buy a basket for the pile in the living room, it consists of magazines, drawings, small notes, color charts, recipts from buying clothes online and much more and it just always was laying around looking messy, but now she got the basket under a table, and the basket is in a color that she loves, and she just have to look through it once in a while when the basket gets full. She has also bought some small bins that she keep her pen and small items that she always use in the living room and the bin sits on the shelf underneath the coffe table, so it doesn't look cluttered and she doesn't have to run around looking for things, it's right there, hidden, but in an open bin so she can just grab it and use the things and put it back when the doorbell rings. She actually has bought bins for her closet wardrobe in the entryway too as she have seen how I kept buying those bins and she also wanted to have them but didn't know what to use them for and I told her to buy bins that would fit the space rather than the things, as you can move the things to the bins that fits, and now my niece actually sometimes put away the hairbrush she has in the closet wardrobe (her grandmother), and she was so inspired buy me labeling everything that when she had a big decluttering in her room (my niece) she made labels for the shelves in her book case, she doesn't own a label maker so she made labels with freezer tape and just wrote on it, and she was so happy with how it looked, and I think it's so good that she's getting organized at an early age as she's been quite messy until she labeled her shelves. I had watched a show on Netflix with the home edit at my moms home and my niece actually didn't grab the remote, I think it worked, she is officially brainwashed 😅 and my mom is getting closer each day. I'm dying to declutter her kitchen cabinet that she use as a pantry and to store tall things, it doesn't work at all, and the tall things is the tea pot coffee canne thingy, whatever it's called in english (we call it "tv-kanne") and some other tall things she use once a year and could keep in her basement. She has a basement that needs a decluttering, but it's enough room for those talls things without decluttering also. I can't stand to see the things fall out every time she opens the cabinet, and if she needs like the cereal, she would need to move fifteen items to reach to it, it's hopeless. It's not a big cabinet, but she didn't want a tall cabinet like she had for 30 years as it was deep and dark and bins wasn't invented in Norway yet in the 70's, so when she got to design a new kitchen in 2007 she wanted drawers and small cabinets. I don't like it at all, I would have designed it with a tall cabinet that you can pull out a thing with baskets in it and I would fill it with food in boxes and jars with lids on them 😅. She did try to put her soups and sauces and such in a container in a drawer, but she buys to much and it's always overfilled so you can't actually find anything, it's so messy and hard for my OCD to look at. I haven't been diagnosed with OCD, but I have always been obsessed with system and I couldn't use my coloured pencils if the pencils wasn't facing the same way with the print facing upwards and it had to be in the excact order that it was in when I bought the colours and if people messed it up I would get mad and when playing with my Barbie dolls they had a lot of clothes and shoes and stuff, and I had these tin boxes that had candy in them and I used those boxes to store the shoes, hair brushes, and other stuff, and all their clothes had to be in a seperate bag, and I didn't mix hairbrushes with shoes, they each had their own box, so I guess I always used this system without realizing it. When I was a teenager I had this drawer with make up and hair stuff and I got old Tupperware food containers to store things, one for lipsticks, onne for hair ties, one for eye shadowa and so on. Who does that when they're a teenager if they're not obsessed. I tried to organize my other stuff to, but I have always had a lot of small items, and they were just floating around in the drawer and it was frustrating but I couldn't figure out why it was a mess. Now I have got rid of all the small items that I don't use and I have bins for my office supplies and my craft supplies in each of my drawers and my scrapbook paper has vertical storage paper holders, and it look so good and is really easy to maintain, it does get messy, but everything has a place and it takes 15 minutes to clean up from chaos to Instagram look. I don't care about Instagram I just know it's what people understand now. 😂 I need to organize more, as my apartment is to messy, but I don't have any storage space as I don't have any closets at all except for one in my craftroom and that is of course filled with boxes with craft supplies. It's a hanging closet and that's why I just had to put those big bins in with some of my craft supplies like christmas supplies and extras of stuff I use. I have to much though, so I have to declutter my craft supplies, it's the only thing left to declutter, I have decluttered before, but you can't actually tell, it's so much and it was a nightmare when I had to move and had so much craft supplies. I have been reducing since, but it's still to much for moving, but at least now every drawer has bins in them so I wouldn't have to sort through every item I own as the people helping me just took a drawer and just pored into a box, I had actually just organized that drawer but I had no money to buy anything, so I just had to use what I had and it was the empty cotton pin boxe and baskets that almost fit the drawer. Now I can just take a picture of each drawer and just paxck the smal bin into a moving box and put it back as I have now labeled every drawer and like the system. The only thing that is hard to move is my scrapbook paper as you can't actually stack it and it's so heavy that you can't put a box full of the paper holders. I try to use up some of it, but it takes time to use up as I use maybe three sheets for two cards if I don't save the scraps. I think I might have 10 000 sheets of paper, I have not counted, but each series is around 10 or 15 different and I used to buy four of each and I got sick so I couldn't scrap for years, but now that I'm better I try to use up things before buying anything and I just buy things like glue, I do buy some paper, but I buy just one of the packs and that's it, not four, that's crazy. 😂

I sometimes get my hair done at a place near my home by a super nice woman named Christine. The first few times I saw her, she had her hair & makeup done & I made the first appointment in person. After a few months, I went back to make the appointment in person bc I was in the area anyway. I went to the desk & asked the receptionist, whose makeup wasn't done, for an appointment with Christine.
She said, "Oh, I'm free on Thursday."

I love your story, Cass 😂😂😂! A tip for next time is just to say, " Oh, you must be related to so and so" 😂. But don't feel bad, my story is worse and more embarrassing!!! A couple that I have known since junior high school, the wife's cousin lived with them for a few years. I knew her, and that she had a mind and a health issue, but I didn't know what the health issue was. Well, we had a little outing one Memorial Day, and she came with the couple we knew. First of all, to let you know, she was a skinny woman, well they were all outside and when I came out I went around and said hi to everyone and when I went to say hi to her I noticed that she had a belly like a 3-4 month pregnant woman so I said " Hi (her name) I didn't know you were pregnant?" She said I'm not pregnant, I have gastro ? something (I forgot the whole name of it), but it made her stomach look bloated at times. I felt so stupid and bad that I had apologized to her and said nobody ever told me that she had it and that I felt so bad and apologized. She told me, "Don't worry because you didn't know," but that still didn't make me feel any better! When I saw my husband, I asked if he knew she had this and told me he did, I slapped his arm and asked him why he didn't tell me that! He said to me I don't know why? And I told him what I said, he said to me, " Oh, I don't know why I didn't tell you." Sorry! I just gave him the look and walked away and said thanks for making me look like an idiot!!!

Cass, I’m really struggling to organize my home. I have taken your quiz and watched your show and your YT content for years. According to your quiz, I am a butterfly-bee hybrid, which I mostly agree with. I love hooks, I prefer to see my stuff, if I can’t see it I tend to forget I even have it, I’m very visual and creative as well. However, I also can’t function when certain things are not properly stored when grouped together, much like a cricket. When it comes to books, paper mementos, photos, nostalgic items, and anything to do with my holiday decor or food items or medical items, these things have to be meticulously grouped and stored or else I feel overwhelmed.
I have been trying to re-organize my paper clutter in way where I can function, but everything I have tried has failed. Despite being a butterfly-bee hybrid, it turns out that I hate seeing all my papers. So I tried file folders, but I couldn’t ever find anything fast enough because my inner cricket personality insisted that the papers had to grouped down to the minutest similarities. Thus, for one category like bills I had a file folder for every single business that I routinely pay a bill to. It was driving me crazy because it took forever to put away receipts and notices. But when I tried broad categories I was giving myself stress just trying to find the one item I was looking for. Next I tried your standing file system method. I never filed anything. It always ended up in a pile by the box. After that, I tried binders. Nope. Fail. Temporary bins…yeah, that didn’t work either. I kept forgetting what the bins were for and would toss non paper items in them all the time. And they were even labeled! Since I’m visual, I next tried the wall-mounted file system. I hated it too. I could never remember what the folder were for, and again they were labeled.
Paper is a huge problem for me. In addition to the regular paper clutter like tax needs, I also have 38 years of medical documentation I have to keep ever ready, and 33 years of writing projects from school, leisure, and my job that I need easily accessible.
I don’t know what else to do. This butterfly-bee-cricket clutterbug combination is making me want to set fire to all my paper clutter and just let it all burn. And I definitely can’t do that.
Is being a trio clutterbug even a thing that can be managed? Have you had a trio clutterbug client before?

    Hi Cas,
I need some advice we have a section in our home in the small hallway. I've tried to organize my father's tools and machines but he never seems to put it back or find anything. How do I organize a very small space with an abundance of tools? It's messy and drives me crazy. Also, the stick on racks for showers I took your advice and bought some for my brother he's very visual and would have all the things on the sink counter and I couldn't deal with it lol. I asked him questions like you mentioned " Does this work for you?" Before I changed because it may not be effective if they don't like it. He also has a bit of OCD so he's particular. Thanks for these videos. So inspiring. Blessings to you.
