I don't know why it bothers me so much that he never buttons up his shirt or wears tank tops,but it does. You would think they'd give him a few mannerisms of a previous Doctor to show it's the same person. The Doctor can be stern,even cruel. For me, the final nail in the coffin of the new companion was when she was watching her baby being kidnapped, and instead of stopping it, she stands there and gets offended that a tiny alien KIDNAPPING HER BABY hissed at her.
The writers wanted to portray her as a spunky type who isn't intimidated. But there should have been 3 seconds of her thinking "WHAT AM I SEEING?" Skipping that was just bad direction.

Look at the absolute dross we've been served up in the last 5+ years, mostly from the House of Mouse Droppings.
RTD said he'd always wanted to do a musical episode, like the one they did in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" but I just looked it up and the characters singing in that show was integral to the plot, it wasn't just stuck on for a laugh.
I generally cant stand musicals but Buffy was the only TV show where not only was the premise believable - caused by a demon - but also they pulled it off perfectly. No other show that has had musical episodes has ever replicated it. Case in point, the recent Star Trek Strange New Worlds musical episode was an hour of ear bleeding cringe; horrible, horrible stuff.
I was starting to think I was the only one who did this. I was super embarrassed cos I was playing it thru the soundsystem. WTF was with a musical no in Doctor Who, huh?
It's a truly cathartic thing to find out that you are no longer angry or upset about the destruction of something you once loved. I’m so glad someone else pointed out that the famously pacifist Doctor straight out murdered the goblin king without a second thought. Also, why are all the goblins celebrating that they’re going to eat a single baby when it’s heading along a conveyor directly to the mouth of the goblin king? The baby will disappear straight into that gaping maw, he’ll barely notice he’s eaten anything and there’d be nothing left for all the others. The entire ‘story’ (not that there’s much of one) makes no sense.

Yeah I gave up about 3 episodes into the Matt Smith run. He was blah, his companions were irritating and the whole River Song thing annoyed the ever loving crap out of me. *edit* In my opinion, Christopher Eccelston's run was by far the best one.
This UA-camr is very biased, so I wouldn't take his word for it. Go see it yourself. You might be surprised because it actually wasn't that bad and was a fun watch. Definitely a lot better than Jodie Whittaker who was unwatchable.
If you compare this to the way Rose reacted to meeting the doctor, it just feels so much more believable and human - she first dismisses the Autons as kids dressed up, and then is completely terrified when she first reacts to seeing the Tardis - she immediately runs out and tries to escape. Ruby just reacts as if everything she's seeing is completely normal.
In that sittuation, a person's reaction would be different. Ruby did go into the Tardis and then come out and walk around it - the usual thing about how can it be that big on the inside, but small on the outside.
Of course not as far back as Bill Potts women can never have anything explained to them by a man, black, white what have you. Bill was always able to just figure everything out on her own. Sees the reTARDIS for the first time. "oh it's bigger on the inside, he is an alien so makes sense to me" but the absolute worst for me was with the lost Roman legion, when she just figured out that the reTARDIS must have a low level telepathic field getting inside their heads and translating everything for them.
The companion is supposed to be an audience surrogate, reacting with shock and wonder, like we would. But Ruby just accepts the wackiness way too quickly and isn’t remotely awestruck or horrified or confused. She’s just along for the ride with no personality beyond a vaguely Rey-esque “who are my parents?” storyline.
About once a year I check out what used to be one of the highlights of entertainment. Thanks for the heads up to keep my own head buried in old Doctor Who Classic dvds.

RTD is looking for that HP crowd, younger, with a higher percentage of women and girls. He is abandoning the current fans and has not made a secret of the fact that this show will not be for OG fans. I think for the rest of us, we just have to take Capaldi's last series as where the Doctor refused to Regenerate and ended his journey through time and space. Not sure where this goes if the two stars want out as has been reported. They certainly need that 'Modern Audience' sooner rather than later thats for sure.

They are going for a new target audience, and I guess it makes sense to go for what's going to sell, but this is a big spit in the face to the old target audience this show used to have. It's like they are trying to cater to people who simply have had nothing to do with Doctor Who in their entire lives for some reason. As for the shift from scifi to magic... DW was already pretty absurd in many aspects, and lots of things were already magical in a sense, but they still had an in universe explanation that made it clear that the universe was still following a set of rules, even if they were made up pseudoscience bs, it at least tried to have some kind of logical explanation that made sense within the context of the show's plot. Seeing all of that legacy being thrown out and entering full on magic land is just plain wrong imo tbh. If they really wanted a show about a magic man who travels through time and interacts with mystical creatures, they should have simply made a new show that targets the HP-type audience. But they knew it wouldn't perform well, so they simply went for Doctor Who and used it as some kind of skin or hood to cover their weird mess of a show in an attempt to make it more appealing to people who already knew what they were in for from prior experiences with DW. It simply leads to such a bizarre end product that I can't even take it seriously anymore.

This time, Doctor Who was cancelled by the BBC until Disney was able to finance further episodes. If the viewing numbers are not significant, Disney continues to suffer losses, and the BBC cannot be guaranteed tax dollars to generate what they want in defiance of public viewing interests, it will be very hard to justify continuing. Jodie’s truncated final series finished airing on 5 December 2021. We won’t get N’cuti’s first full series airing until May 2024. All we’ve had in that time is ‘Specials’. To have all of 2022 and 2023 to plan a big relaunch with a new Doctor and more money and this is the best that they could come up with. It’s shocking really. And yet, just like in 2005, we have to listen to anyone connected with the production or who wants to keep working in the industry saying what a genius Russell is. There’s no real threat or logical plots in this Christmas special because ultimately it’s all played for laughs. No one making it really takes it seriously. So how can the audience be experienced to invest in it? The fact that some people genuinely still do, absolutely boggles my mind.

It's been bothering me for a bit now but... what did undoing the master knot actually do? You'd think it was holding the whole ship together the way it was played out but after the doctor and Ruby descend from the ship it apparently doesn't fall apart. The goblins are still fine and the next time we see the ship it's still intact. Unless the goblins are somehow travelling together back in time without taking their wrecked ship so they arrive on the previous intact one??? Also, after them ripping off so many things from much better shows and movies for this episode, I was disappointed when the Goblin King didn't turn out to be a David Bowie expy :P

It's constructed and maintained biologically by itself. Since technically it is a living thing and can be genetically engineered and programmed to not really have a set expiration date is truly fascinating. And I can go on and on about the technical and biological aspects of it. But I digress what makes flesh best technology interesting is because in our bodies. We are a machine an organic one but still a machine. And that really connects with us and is truly fascinating that you can grow. A machine and not have to worry about assembling or putting it together. True you could cut it open and dissect it and rewire it by its nervous system or blood vessels which is incredible. That makes the technology interesting unique separate now after explaining that ropes are just stupid it is. The goblins singing, and the Doctor and Ruby singing to distract them, was like the musical world in The Marvels, added to pad the runtime but not adding anything of substance and not being even mildly entertaining.

The one thing I’m genuinely afraid of is that they’re going to make Rose Tyler Ruby’s mom. Because if Rose would’ve had a baby six months before she met the doctor, she would be Ruby‘s age. And because Rose ended up with a human version of the doctor, I’m afraid that it’s going to be that those two had a kid, and for some reason that kid… Ruby… because of some timeline or dimension bullshit…. Needed to be placed in Rose’s original world *before* Rose ever met the ninth doctor in the timeline. If this was true, the rose we saw running around with the Dr on the show wouldn’t yet know about it happening so it’s not like she would be just carrying on with her life while knowing her baby is living with a foster mom somewhere a few blocks away lol. The actress kind of even looks like she would be the child of Rose and David’s doctor. In the same vein, I’m worried that Mrs. flood is going to have something to do with the ponds or river. That would make me even more angry than Rose (which could be possible to make a cool story from- unlikely- but possible) because everything involving the Pond’s has been done and redone to death, imo. So hopefully, “Flood”, is a red herring, cause there’s no way they wouldn’t know we’d think of that if they came up with the name randomly. They know that because of the “Melody Pond is River Song” thing, we would notice that right away. Someone on twitter said, “Watch her name be Carol.” 😂 Anyway, as for the review… and episode… Idk if this is what you were going for but as a writer, I gotta say, how much you WANTED to dislike this was palpable from almost the first word of your script. Fair enough. I’ve been annoyed enough with shows/books/films I once loved to pick apart every aspect of it and be angry at it hahaha… HOWEVER, I gotta say, I think it’s a little bizarre to focus on the fact that he’s black. Even if you had focused on the fact that he was LGBT, and you got annoyed at that because historically the doctor was not overly sexual (until the later doctors) so to have him go from having his first, childlike, crushes a handful of seasons ago, to having sex with the Queen of England, others implied, and his wife, to now being totally gay and having love affairs with Harry Houdini seems a bit odd lol… him being a bit flamboyant would make sense since his last incarnation was a woman… I just found it out of character for him to be so flippant in talking about having a love affair with a man when a couple of seasons ago he was still at “giggling shyly if someone kissed him” level. The thing that annoys me most was that the villains were strictly fantasy based. They weren’t aliens. And that’s what I always loved about Doctor Who… That even vampires were aliens. It kind of made this weird “hey, you never know - it could be out there!” kind of whimsy factor to it, no matter how crazy the villain of the week was… Whereas I know that time traveling goblins who live between dimensions and thrive on luck and coincidence are never going to be real lol. That was one change I definitely don’t like. Usually with Doctor Who I can imagine a universe where most of it would be possible… If that makes sense. But that universe never included straight up magic until this episode lol. But as far as the silliness… I’ll have to see if that continues… Because right now you have to consider that this is meant to be “everybody sit around with with the whole family on Christmas” episode so it not only Hass to be beyond family friendly… But it also has to be without lore so that Great Aunt Jane, who’s never seen an episode, can still enjoy it. Obviously, this is up to taste, but I liked Ruby more than I expected to if I’m honest. I actually found her to seem pretty real compared to what I thought she was going to be when I saw the previews. And you have to remember we don’t know that she’s human. Lol. I’m just saying we don’t know that she’s not an alien or… apparently… magical. I liked her family… They seemed real to me. I liked the last 15 minutes… That kind of gave me hope because it seemed like Doctor Who and it was entertaining. I just don’t understand why they neither used aliens nor time travel (aside from the last ten mins) in ***Doctor Who***. So if the Christmas episode was more childish and fantasy based because it was the Christmas episode, and if they take the story of Ruby in a good direction while not bringing it up so much that she doesn’t seem like a person anymore… I think there’s a chance this season could be good. I still have hope. We shall see.

Look at the absolute dross we've been served up in the last 5+ years, mostly from the House of Mouse Droppings.
RTD said he'd always wanted to do a musical episode, like the one they did in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" but I just looked it up and the characters singing in that show was integral to the plot, it wasn't just stuck on for a laugh.
Strangely enough that episode of buffy was quite good. Unlike this trash.
I generally cant stand musicals but Buffy was the only TV show where not only was the premise believable - caused by a demon - but also they pulled it off perfectly. No other show that has had musical episodes has ever replicated it. Case in point, the recent Star Trek Strange New Worlds musical episode was an hour of ear bleeding cringe; horrible, horrible stuff.

If you compare this to the way Rose reacted to meeting the doctor, it just feels so much more believable and human - she first dismisses the Autons as kids dressed up, and then is completely terrified when she first reacts to seeing the Tardis - she immediately runs out and tries to escape. Ruby just reacts as if everything she's seeing is completely normal.
In that sittuation, a person's reaction would be different. Ruby did go into the Tardis and then come out and walk around it - the usual thing about how can it be that big on the inside, but small on the outside.
This planer was moved to another part of the galaxy with a bunch of planets around it. At some point you'll be less surprised

I think for the rest of us, we just have to take Capaldi's last series as where the Doctor refused to Regenerate and ended his journey through time and space. Not sure where this goes if the two stars want out as has been reported. They certainly need that 'Modern Audience' sooner rather than later thats for sure.

They are going for a new target audience, and I guess it makes sense to go for what's going to sell, but this is a big spit in the face to the old target audience this show used to have. It's like they are trying to cater to people who simply have had nothing to do with Doctor Who in their entire lives for some reason.
As for the shift from scifi to magic... DW was already pretty absurd in many aspects, and lots of things were already magical in a sense, but they still had an in universe explanation that made it clear that the universe was still following a set of rules, even if they were made up pseudoscience bs, it at least tried to have some kind of logical explanation that made sense within the context of the show's plot. Seeing all of that legacy being thrown out and entering full on magic land is just plain wrong imo tbh.
If they really wanted a show about a magic man who travels through time and interacts with mystical creatures, they should have simply made a new show that targets the HP-type audience. But they knew it wouldn't perform well, so they simply went for Doctor Who and used it as some kind of skin or hood to cover their weird mess of a show in an attempt to make it more appealing to people who already knew what they were in for from prior experiences with DW. It simply leads to such a bizarre end product that I can't even take it seriously anymore.

That may not be certain, (although according to quantum mechanics just about anything is possible.) It was canceled in 1989. It wasn't formally revived until 2005. This time, Doctor Who was cancelled by the BBC until Disney was able to finance further episodes. If the viewing numbers are not significant, Disney continues to suffer losses, and the BBC cannot be guaranteed tax dollars to generate what they want in defiance of public viewing interests, it will be very hard to justify continuing. I'm not saying it is impossible, but a clear stopping point has to be considered by the studio, the show runners, and the remaining viewers.@@sharktenko267

All we’ve had in that time is ‘Specials’. To have all of 2022 and 2023 to plan a big relaunch with a new Doctor and more money and this is the best that they could come up with. It’s shocking really. And yet, just like in 2005, we have to listen to anyone connected with the production or who wants to keep working in the industry saying what a genius Russell is.
There’s no real threat or logical plots in this Christmas special because ultimately it’s all played for laughs. No one making it really takes it seriously. So how can the audience be experienced to invest in it? The fact that some people genuinely still do, absolutely boggles my mind.

It's been bothering me for a bit now but... what did undoing the master knot actually do? You'd think it was holding the whole ship together the way it was played out but after the doctor and Ruby descend from the ship it apparently doesn't fall apart. The goblins are still fine and the next time we see the ship it's still intact.
Unless the goblins are somehow travelling together back in time without taking their wrecked ship so they arrive on the previous intact one???

The goblins singing, and the Doctor and Ruby singing to distract them, was like the musical world in The Marvels, added to pad the runtime but not adding anything of substance and not being even mildly entertaining.

The one thing I’m genuinely afraid of is that they’re going to make Rose Tyler Ruby’s mom.
Because if Rose would’ve had a baby six months before she met the doctor, she would be Ruby‘s age. And because Rose ended up with a human version of the doctor, I’m afraid that it’s going to be that those two had a kid, and for some reason that kid… Ruby… because of some timeline or dimension bullshit…. Needed to be placed in Rose’s original world *before* Rose ever met the ninth doctor in the timeline. If this was true, the rose we saw running around with the Dr on the show wouldn’t yet know about it happening so it’s not like she would be just carrying on with her life while knowing her baby is living with a foster mom somewhere a few blocks away lol.
The actress kind of even looks like she would be the child of Rose and David’s doctor.
In the same vein, I’m worried that Mrs. flood is going to have something to do with the ponds or river. That would make me even more angry than Rose (which could be possible to make a cool story from- unlikely- but possible) because everything involving the Pond’s has been done and redone to death, imo. So hopefully, “Flood”, is a red herring, cause there’s no way they wouldn’t know we’d think of that if they came up with the name randomly. They know that because of the “Melody Pond is River Song” thing, we would notice that right away.

Anyway, as for the review… and episode…
Idk if this is what you were going for but as a writer, I gotta say, how much you WANTED to dislike this was palpable from almost the first word of your script. Fair enough. I’ve been annoyed enough with shows/books/films I once loved to pick apart every aspect of it and be angry at it hahaha…
HOWEVER, I gotta say, I think it’s a little bizarre to focus on the fact that he’s black.
Even if you had focused on the fact that he was LGBT, and you got annoyed at that because historically the doctor was not overly sexual (until the later doctors) so to have him go from having his first, childlike, crushes a handful of seasons ago, to having sex with the Queen of England, others implied, and his wife, to now being totally gay and having love affairs with Harry Houdini seems a bit odd lol… him being a bit flamboyant would make sense since his last incarnation was a woman… I just found it out of character for him to be so flippant in talking about having a love affair with a man when a couple of seasons ago he was still at “giggling shyly if someone kissed him” level.
But…
What does him being black matter? Like, I’m not even trying to be woke or that kind of thing lol. I genuinely don’t get why you would care about that unless you legit hated black people because they’re black (aka racist). He’s honestly a fantastic actor. Now will he get fantastic scripts to work with? That’s to be seen lol.
Whether or not you you think he’s right for Doctor Who is a different story, but to talk about him like he’s some talentless bum who got the part solely because he’s black is crazy.
In fact, him being flamboyant and part of the LGBT community is what proves they hired him because he was the best. Now maybe they were specifically looking for a black actor… which obviously narrows the pool down… and wouldn’t surprise me… But they definitely weren’t *looking for* a both black and gay actor lol.
The thing that annoys me most was that the villains were strictly fantasy based. They weren’t aliens. And that’s what I always loved about Doctor Who… That even vampires were aliens. It kind of made this weird “hey, you never know - it could be out there!” kind of whimsy factor to it, no matter how crazy the villain of the week was… Whereas I know that time traveling goblins who live between dimensions and thrive on luck and coincidence are never going to be real lol. That was one change I definitely don’t like. Usually with Doctor Who I can imagine a universe where most of it would be possible… If that makes sense. But that universe never included straight up magic until this episode lol.
But as far as the silliness… I’ll have to see if that continues… Because right now you have to consider that this is meant to be “everybody sit around with with the whole family on Christmas” episode so it not only Hass to be beyond family friendly… But it also has to be without lore so that Great Aunt Jane, who’s never seen an episode, can still enjoy it.
Obviously, this is up to taste, but I liked Ruby more than I expected to if I’m honest. I actually found her to seem pretty real compared to what I thought she was going to be when I saw the previews. And you have to remember we don’t know that she’s human. Lol. I’m just saying we don’t know that she’s not an alien or… apparently… magical.
I liked her family… They seemed real to me.
I liked the last 15 minutes… That kind of gave me hope because it seemed like Doctor Who and it was entertaining. I just don’t understand why they neither used aliens nor time travel (aside from the last ten mins) in ***Doctor Who***.
So if the Christmas episode was more childish and fantasy based because it was the Christmas episode, and if they take the story of Ruby in a good direction while not bringing it up so much that she doesn’t seem like a person anymore… I think there’s a chance this season could be good. I still have hope.
