Just to clarify: these trades happened DURING the season, by the deadline. Not in the offseason.
Wasn’t verlander a waiver trade. After the deadline?
CC Sabathia was a damn problem back in the day especially when he was dotting his changeup and sliders. 2008 Brewers tenure was a work of art.
For the Rays, the biggest deadline deal has to be Devil Rays sending Victor Zambrano and Bartolome Fortunato to the Mets for Scott Kazmir. This trade was the one trade that set the franchise into the mode they currently are still in when making deals.
However, best move overall by the Rays was the Delmon Young trade that is still having impacts towards todays team
A note on the Verlander to the Astros trade:
This was one of the most one sided trades in baseball history. The Tigers got 3 players back for Verlander: Daz Cameron (no longer with the Tigers, -0.6 WAR), Franklin Perez (never made it to the majors), and Jake Rogers (Still with the Tigers, 1.0 WAR, career average of 194). The Tigers got absolutely swindled and are still paying for that horrid trade
The tigers got NOTHING from any of the trades they made to break up that squad. Not a single damn player worth a damn. The tigers trades during their big run were all garbage. The young guys they traded away to try and help their veterans squad get over the hump all panned out for other teams and the vets we got didn’t even help. When we traded everyone away we got nothing from any of it.
Avila was a worse gm than randy smith.
My hot take about Mickey Moniak becoming an everyday player has come to fruition!
Now he just has to make the 2024 All Star Game to fulfill my entire hot take. :)
Those mid 90's Braves only winning 1 World Series is unbelievable
braves 2021 ENTIRE deadline
I like that he said Fred McGriff the crime dog for the Braves. He is often overlooked most people talk about the doyle Alexander for John Smoltz trade. The first day that Fred McGriff showed up for the Braves there was a fire in the stadium and he had the nickname for a while the Fire Dog. He hit a homerun that day.
Crime Dog?
@@pray4us955 crime dog was a cartoon ad the crime dog was McGruff.
i think the best deadline deal for the Nationals has to be Howie Kendrick. Given, they did resign him and his world series heroics happened during a different season than when they traded for him, so if that's the criteria, I agree that Hudson is their best.
People often forget that Piazza was an in-season trade acquisition for the Mets. Although he's one of the best players in Mets history, I think Cespedes in 2015 is the greatest deadline trade the Mets have ever made because his historic 2nd half that year was the reason they made the playoffs, let alone the World Series.
Definitely a good one too! Thought about going with him, but decided to go with the longer Mets career in Piazza. I feel like if you ask any Mets fan who the greatest Mets are, Piazza’s name will come up top 3 easily.
@rhyde definitely agree, I just think most people forget he was traded to the Mets since he is a top 5 Met of all time.
As a Cardinals fan easily the biggest trade for the Marlins at deadline ever was the marcelozuna trade. It gives me chills to this day
I'd have to say the best trade for the Mets at the "Deadline" was trading Neil Allen and Rick Owenby for Keith Hernandez back on June 15th 1983. Back then, June 15th was the trade deadline. 6 years to the day prior, they made the worst trade deadline deals.
straight to the point. gotta love it.
I think Willie Hernandez on this list is a little bit of a stretch. That trade happened in spring training, and he spent the entire season with Detroit. That’s not exactly a deadline deal. The better answer is Doyle Alexander who went 9-0 down the stretch to lead Detroit to the best record in baseball. While they did give up John Smoltz in the deal, and the Tigers lost to the Twins, Detroit doesn’t make the playoffs without him.
To me personally, the offseason is over when spring training begins so I counted it, and the Alexander Smoltz trade happened after the non-waiver deadline.
@@rhyde I can respect your stance, although I disagree with it. Detroit didn’t play a game in 1984 without Hernandez at their disposal. David Price in 2014 was a pretty good one too. I didn’t realize the Alexander/Smoltz trade was in August.
And good call on Zobrist to the Royals in 2015. Royals don’t win the World Series without him.
The Astros in 2017 were Bangin they were so hard to Beat its like all there weaknesses were in the Trash if you Can believe it it was almost like THEY WERE CHEATING wow they were good
Cubs fan here. To me, the best Cubs trade was Ivan DeJesus for Ryne Sandberg (and Larry Bowa). While Arrieta is a solid contender, he certainly will not make the HoF as Sandberg did. Cheers....
Astros has to be getting Jeff Bagwell from the Red Sox in 1990 for reliever Larry Anderson
An interesting note on Doyle Alexander. He found himself on a bad Braves team in 1987. They traded him to the Tigers for a AA player named John Smoltz. The rest is history. Who won the trade? The Braves in the long run but Doyle did what he was traded for. He went 10-0 down the stretch for the Tigers.
Tigers won the AL East. That AL Championship Series with the Twins was epic!
@@Dulcimerist Dang sure was but the Twins had a young Kirby Puckett and won won the WS. He gave my Braves hell in the 91 WS. Who did the Twins play in 87? Tbh I forgot. Was it the Dodgers?
@@gregdiamond6023 Cardinals in 1987.
Kent Hrbek was another great Twins player. :)
@@Dulcimerist Kent Hrbeck was one of those guys that grinder out ABs and an overall solid player that could become a Thorn in the sides of the opposing teams. He was a pain in the 91 series I think game 7, imho, was the best game 7 ever. Morris v Smoltz pitched a scoreless tie into extra innings. I believe a Kent Hrbeck solo homer ended it.
@@gregdiamond6023 Gene Larkin as a pinch hitter got the walkoff single to end game 7 and the 1991 World Series.
Morris will likely be the last pitcher to pitch a 10-inning complete game shutout in the World Series, or perhaps any MLB game.
While we all love Chone figgins. Its a huge stretch to call him one of the best Angels of all time 😂😂😂
Dude…he’s 11th in bWAR and 9th in fWAR among position players in franchise history…
@@rhyde you are looking into the advance metrics a little to much here. He's was a solid player for sure. One of the best Angels of all time ? No
For the Twins, the player's name is actually Kevin Tapani.
I was sad to see Viola go, but Aguilera, Tapani, and David West really bolstered the Twins pitching staff!
I KNEW I messed up something somewhere 😂🤡
@@rhyde It's okay. I wouldn't have noticed the spelling if you hadn't been pronouncing his last name so oddly. lol (Should be "Tappannee")
Thanks for making this video! I was 14 years old when that trade happened in 1989, so this brought back memories from a better time in my life. I wore Viola's number 16 in little league, and worked to learn the circle change like he did. Seeing our ace go was rough, but I already liked Aguilera - and liked him even more when he became a stud closer!
@@Dulcimerist Made me laugh every time he said it lol.
The best trade has to be Yordan Alvarez to the Astros. Not only did they get him for peanuts (pitcher Josh Fields) but fields blew game 2 of the 2017 WS for the Dodgers. This proves it is possible to lose twice in one trade.
Fields was facing guys who knew what he was throwing. So did he really blow it?
@rorynell4962 are you sure about that? The game was in LA.
Pls do a video of Rick Ankiel's Career. Thanks
Jake Arrieta had a strong case for World Series MVP. Zobrist deserved it, but Arrieta won both his games. Great choice for the Cubs.
Arrieta was just unhittable at that time
@@rhyde it was only for a short time, but in that span, he was in Bob Gibson-Sandy Koufax territory.

You’re welcome
Wasn’t bagwell a deadline deal? Even tho he never played for the Red Sox, the astros got him for a bag of chips. Also it’s almost eerily similar to the yordan trade
That was after the non-waiver deadline, so a player had to pass through waivers to be traded.
Being a rockies fan is really just masochism. "oh yeah the best trade by the deadline for the rockies was when they traded their star player to the blue jays"
As much as I love Manny Ramirez. The Dodgers biggest traded is without a doubt Mookie Betts.
That was the offseason
Nope astros cheated in 2017, good video though.
❤️
The Yankees and Boston also were cheating so what that the Astros also cheated.
Respect for being one of the few notable baseball youtubers that are tired of the Astros villain narrative
Awesome video, but you butchered Kevin Tapani's last name
Man i remeber in 08 when the dodgers got manny ramirez! Mannywoood!! Lol it was craaazy!
I remember when it happened. Was crazy to see it tbh.
@rhyde my brother Hector R.I.P big dodger fan called me like 5 times he was so excited like a Lil kid on Xmas haha watch worldseries lol they came pretty close lol
Yeah, I’d agree
Wasn't Pedro Martinez traded to Boston for peanuts and a bag half empty of M&M's?
Hahaha yes, but man I had to go with the Nomar trade. Completely changed the momentum of the team.
Cliff Lee to the Rangers is the correct pick
I respectfully disagree with the dodgers one. Manny was amazing... But we gave away mookie Betts to them for nothing as well as Price and mookie is still raking for them and helped them win a Mickey mouse ring in 2020...
The Mookie Betts trade was in the offseason
Wait, how is Gary Sheffield not the trade for The Marlins?
Yeah that one was good too!
It's too bad Vetlander choose the astros over the cubs. He might have made a difference in the nlcs that year. I just dont think the cubs would've re-signed bim after 2017.
George Bell for Sammy Sosa worked out pretty well for the cubs too.
Ben Zobrist for Starlin Castro. (Kinda) Castro was trade for cash to the Yankees. And they used to sign Ben Zobrist. The cubs Acquited Adam Warren and Brendan Ryan( who was almost immediately fired) Warren was a throw in in the Chapman for Gleyber Torres trade. No one even considers that trade to be a 4 for 1 deal. It was a straight up Torres for Chapman deal
I don’t think it was a matter of him choosing the Astros over the Cubs. I believe it was said the Cubs decided not to pursue him.
@rhyde I'm oretty sure jt was his choice since he had to approve the trade by waiving his no trade clause. It came down to the cubs and Astros. The Astros just had better prospects I guess.
Cubs has to be Chapman. Jake was acquired in a year the cubs lost 85+
Right but then look what he did after. Chapman’s a good one too.
Love chone figgins
Umm cmon the braves should be 2021 Eddie Rosario, Duval
Not even a minute in and you’ve mentioned two trades that involve the Giants losing the World Series
😂😂😂
Rockies 😂😂
Chone Figgins is not one of the greatest Angels in history.
He’s 11th in bWAR and 9th in fWAR among position players in franchise history….🤦♂️
