Denise Soden (her UA-cam channel is In Liquid Color) created a beautiful Sap Green in the paint set she collaborated on with DaVinci, using PB60 (Indanthrone Blue) and PY129 (Green Gold.) I haven't tried mixing those two myself, yet, but am anxious to since it's such a gorgeous version of Sap Green.

She wanted to avoid Nickel Azo Yellow since it was for her earth friendly palette and the nickel isn't so earth friendly. It creates a beautiful range of foliage greens, definitely try the mix!

@@PaintinHiding Actually, I’d like to try the mass tone. It might be a useful shadow colour for yellows. Also, id like to try it as an alternative to earth hues such as raw umber and raw sienna. I think it would make a good raw umber substitute.

awatercolorist, How do you not have it yet??? I have this in my M. Graham palette and when I had just 12 M. Grahams in the palette, I did a mixing chart. It has very high tinting strength for a yellow, and all of my mixes came out either a greenish color or (with the purples) a disgusting brown. For this reason, I'm not sure it will sub for raw umber like you think (I'm assuming you mean the greenish raw umbers here) but it might if you can darken it down. It definitely lowers the chroma of things, but then again it still retains that glowing brightness you see also in PY 150.

PY129 is my ultimate colour for mixing skin tone. It has a permnant place in all of my palettes. Mix with any cool red(I mix with White Night's Carmine but PV19 works perfectly too) and you have a transparent non granulating skin tone hue with only two pigments. I also love using it as my cool yellow, mixing it with White Night PG8 or PG7 to paint the leaves with sunlight shone through.

I would describe this color as being two-tone or multichrome, similar to Nickel Azo Yellow, where the masstone is quite a different hue than the tint. The masstone is a low-chroma green (which is why we see it as brownish, because it is traveling towards the center of the color wheel). The tint has higher chroma and that distinctive glow. I'm gonna check out the mixing video now!

ooohh yesss! i need to learn all these fancy words you’re using. the high chroma and all that jazz. but thank u for teaching about that, that because of the low chroma we see it as brown. sooo cool!

@@PaintinHiding I learned most of what I know from reading Handprint, no lie. It really helped me to understand what I see when I am looking at color. Actually it would be a great subject for a video: The three dimensions of color.
      1. Hue = the "shade" of a color. For example if we are discussing a red, is it orangey, purpley, or pure red? Where is it on the outside of the color wheel (2:00, 3:00, 4:00)
      2. Chroma (aka Saturation) = how bright or muted the color is. PR 254 Pyrrol Red is high chroma, PR 179 Perelyne Maroon is lower chroma. Same with cobalt blue vs. indanthrone. Adding black to colors lowers the chroma.
      3. Value (aka lightness): The intensity of the color. Straight paint from the tube has the deepest value, but adding water or white to the paint lightens the value.

thank you for this. I bought the van Gogh as one of my first not in a pallet colors. And it’s been a little over a year, and I’ve managed to whittle it down pretty far. I’m guessing it’s because it’s not as pigmented and long lasting and everything is the other ones. And I know I’m gonna have to replace it soon, because I love that color. I use it a lot in my drawings. But I wanted to upgrade, because then go is really good, but it’s a little more student quality and while I don’t consider myself a professional, I still like to use professional colors. So I might look into the Daniel Smith one instead, as I have a lot of his colors as well.

Question for you (or anyone else who sees this) about this pigment: I made my own full pan (from American Journey’s PY129)…then I didn’t use it for awhile. The other day, when I took it out to use it, I noticed what appeared to be almost a duochrome-like sheen covering the surface of the paint in the dried pan. None of the other dried pans in the same tin had this. Have you ever had this happen with your PY129 in pans?

Hi J! Green gold was originally PG10. When it got discontinued, paint manufacturers started to call PY129 Green Gold. Some companies, such as Daniel Smith and Roman Szmal, mix a PG10-like hue and call it Green Gold; that is why they use a different name for PY129. I’d love to try PG10 one day.

Oh totally off topic here but I received my Schmincke square palette, and to my surprise and delight, WITH the insert, you can fit an extra FULL pan in each row or two half pans. WITHOUT the insert (just got some magnetic tape too) you can fit 18 full pans!! I thought maybe you could fit in half pans sideways below the bottom row, but it's a hair too small for that. The tin itself is very well made -- it's a bit heavier weight and has nicer paint than my Meeden palettes. The insert can be a bit sharp I suppose, but it's not like a razor blade or anything!

@@PaintinHiding It actually arrived Saturday but I wasn't at my office to receive my mail! I don't have any White Nights so I can't tell you about how those pans fit. The insert is only sharp on the edge of the bottom; there's no danger when it's inside the palette. You just need to be careful with it when you have removed it from the palette, say, for cleaning. I do hope they bring back the colorful ones. Oh and I think this palette is steel instead of aluminum; which explains the "better quality" feeling but it might also be a tad heavier to carry in one's bag.
