    I love watching peoples' reactions to this film because the practical fx are just so amazing! The disgust and horror people experience is so good and a confirmation of its mastery. The chest cavity scene reactions are particularly fun. No one ever sees that coming. If you appreciate these wonderful 80s practical fx, try An American Werewolf in London which I believe was the first film to win an Oscar for fx! You'll see why. Though honestly, The Thing deserved an Oscar too.

      Yeah, I was BLOWN AWAY! Was not expecting that at all, but then again, as I mentioned in the intro I didn't know anything about it going in. I am beginning to realize that so many of these good horror movies have been overlooked and not given their due alongside "high brow" films etc etc.
      And oh Lord good ol Wilford Brimley.. well first of all my grandparents watched Cocoon like 100 times on vhs (which, by the way, he was 50 or 51 when he filmed that, and I am 43 now, which just makes me want to slow-cry down the shower wall, but whatever). He starred in Our House on NBC when I was kid, which I liked, and then of course "Diabeetus" haha. And lastly, a bit of trivia, I am from Shreveport, LA originally, and crazy as it sounds there was a giant buffalo head on the wall of a local Mexican restaurant with a sign that read, "Killed by Wilford Brimley". Apparently he donated it to the restaurant.

      Yep! Except the older version was called, "The Thing From Another World" (1951). The dialog was funny enough, but they strayed way off the monster concept since there would have been no way to do the effects back then. They ended up with a guy in a monster suit who fed on human blood. Carpenter's version is much closer to the original story from 1938. (Yes, 1938!)

    As someone else once said, this is "Among Us" The Live-Action Movie.
    Fun Fact: According to an apocryphal story first reported on Reddit in February 2013, when asked about the ambiguous ending of the film, John Carpenter responded that he never understood how could there be any confusion about whether Childs or MacReady are human or not, because the last scene shows "Kurt Russell and Keith David staring each other down, harshly backlit. It's completely, glaringly obvious that Kurt Russell is breathing, and Keith David is not."

      @rsrt6910 3 роки тому +4

      Fun Fact: According to John Carpenter, there's no way to tell who may or may not be a Thing at the end and that he left NO subtle clues.
      I never understood how could there be any confusion about whether a Thing breaths because we can CLEARLY see the Bennings-Thing breathing when it screams just before MacReady torches it.
      It's also completely, glaringly obvious that Childs is breathing, but the fact that the fires are not backlighting his breath makes it more faint than Mac.

    • @PeterMaranci
      @PeterMaranci 3 роки тому +2

      @@rsrt6910 Exactly! Also, some people claim that the bottle that Mac gave Childs was full of gasoline, and that the fact that Childs just drank it with no comment revealed that he was a Thing. But that's ridiculous. The Thing is a perfect imitation; it would react to gasoline the way the original human did.

    ...and speaking of THE THING lol. This is a childhood favorite as well, my grandfather and I loved watching this along with the ALIEN series and the APES movies because he was really into sci-fi. I loved your reactions to the transformation scenes, Rob Bottin's work in this film with the special effects is amazing. The poor guy ended up hospitalized for all the time and effort he put into these special effects but it was worth the effort as these practical effects are still better than any CGI and especially the horrible CGI used in the prequel. The Norris transformation scene is still my favorite scene but it was the most dangerous to film according to him as he was under the table operating the puppets and the chemicals that were used were highly flammable and dangerous to inhale. I think he said they filmed it only once because the set caught fire. And I love how they used an amputee for the doctor in that scene, it really sells the effect of him getting his arms bit off. If you really want to know what happened with MacReady and Childs I suggest checking out the video game sequel as its a great follow up. The comic books are hit and miss and the prequel is bad but they do explain a lot of what we see in this film too with all the nods ot the original. Great video!

    Thank you for this reaction! I always like to see how people react to this film. There is a video out there that breaks down who became “The Thing” in chronological order in time of events between the characters. It did a pretty decent job of explaining who it was and what they did in terms of protecting itself (destroying the stored blood). It’s worth a look. The person who I think is the sole survivor as a human is obviously Kurt Russell’s character. The only reason that leads me to believe this is when it’s just him and Childs at the ver end of the film. Mac Ready takes a drink out of his bottle of whiskey and hands the bottle over to Child’s. When Childs takes a drink from the bottle, Mac Ready starts to chuckle. He’s laughing because he knows Childs is “The Thing”. Childs was the character who was so suspicious of everyone and everything. A true hypochondriac. He’s the one that asked the question, “how would you know if I was a perfect imitation”. And it was even more apparent between him and Mac Ready in respect to how Childs was so suspicious of him. There is no way Childs would have taken a drink after Mac Ready drank from the same bottle because of shared saliva. I think they end up dying by freezing to death in the cold. But that’s why this ending works because it is pretty much open to interpretation which demonstrates how ahead of it’s time this movie was. It’s brilliant. One of the reasons it got mixed reviews back in the 80’s was because it came out the same year as Steven Spielberg’s E.T. The Extra Terrestrial. People preferred the more family oriented films back then. How the times have changed. Any, Texas in the house too!! ⭐️🙌🏼😊

    Greatest horror film ever made and one of the greatest in general. Not just because of the great cast, ambience, plot etc but because of the concept. Can you imagine anything more frightening? You're on a desolate continent, you're battling an extremely intelligent creature, that is almost indestructible besides against fire/acid, can imitate all life forms and you won't know the difference without a specific test, you have no idea if it's malicious or simply trying to survive, you're dead if it touches you and if it gets to transportation, water or civilization the whole planet is doomed, not only humans. Only thing worse I can think of is utter atomic annihilation. Could you imagine getting to lock away The Thing into a room it can't escape or hurt anything and you could try to talk to it I'd have so many questions! Let's hope something like this doesn't exist out there in the universe, or if it does it's friendly lol

    The story was written by John W. Campbell. The book is called Who Goes There? and was published in 1938. Very good book. In 1951 a movie was made loosely from the book called The Thing From Another World. I really enjoyed seeing how the Norwegian's handled the problem and how they got to the beginning of this movie. I like the ambiguous ending of this film. That showed the mastery of Carpenter. If you think about it they never really show MacReady drink from the bottle, so is that booze or is it a molotov cocktail that he hands to Childes to see if he'll drink it and when he does Mac just laughs to himself. • @ttanza4004
    @ttanza4004 3 роки тому +4

    They actually made a Prequel (which is also called "THE THING") to this Movie back in 2011. (VERY Long Post Below)
    The Prequel also takes place in Antarctica in 1982 and 3 days before the events of the John Carpenter Movie and it is the story of what happened at the Norwegian Base (the base where the Dog-Thing came from). The Prequel stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton.
    Now I myself actually like the Prequel although it is not anywhere even close to being as good as the John Carpenter Movie. The Prequel definitely has a lot of flaws, it also unfortunately has got a lot of really bad CGI in it as well. The reason why is because when they originally made the Prequel, they did indeed use Practical Effects in it. However, when the Prequel was in Post-Production, the Studio watched the Prequel and for some reason, they did not like the Practical Effects in it and so very late into Post-Production (like almost at the last minute), the Studio hired the guys who did the CGI for the Movie "DISTRICT 9" to come in and cover over a majority of the Practical Effects in the Prequel with CGI which they then did. The fact that it was all done so late into Post-Production is 1 of the main reasons why I think the CGI looked so bad.
    Still though, I do like the Prequel and if that sort of thing (really bad CGI) is not something that bothers you then you should check the Prequel out as well whenever you have the chance.
    Again, It is not anywhere even close to being as good as the John Carpenter. It does have a lot of flaws in it along with the really bad CGI and so if you do watch it then don't go into it expecting to see a Movie that is better or on the exact same level as the John Carpenter Movie. Basically, I am just recommending that you really lower your expectations for the Prequel if you do watch it.
    Also, I am not going to say why but if you do watch the Prequel then at the end of it when the ending credits begin going.....do not stop watching. Again, I won't say why.

      Wow, thank you! Awesome comment. And you know what I noticed that literally no one has mentioned- there were no women at all in The Thing. You referenced Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the 2011 prequel, and I thought about that again with the 1982 original- All men. I've only seen one other movie (that I can think of anyway), where it was an all same-sex cast, and that was The Women. All women (obviously) in that one, but very unique to see that.
