I lived up at Lake Tahoe in the late 70s. And at one point I drove down to Big Sur to do some camping. At that time the federal government wanted to turn the Big Sur area into a national recreation area. But the people who lived there didn't want that at all and felt it was completely unnecessary. They felt that they had protected the area for hundreds of years and didn't really need the federal government to butt in. And one of the leaders against turning the area into a national recreation area was Ansel Adams, who lived in Carmel.
I had visited Carmel often and loved this area with Point Lobos nearby. And I had studied many of the great photographers who lived there. And among them obviously was Edward Weston. But there were many more. And I was really into photography.
At one point in the middle of the week I needed to do my laundry, so drove into Carmel. I found a laundromat and dry cleaners in a new mini mall. And when I arrived there was just one other person doing their laundry and the attendant. And then I was the only one with the attendant. And then the attendant said he had to leave for a minute but asked it I would please tell anyone that came by for dry cleaning to tell them he’d be right back. So that was fine. I continued to do my laundry and then at one point saw someone at the door and I looked up and...................... it was Ansel Adams! Completely blew me away! It was kind of like if you were really into rock music and John Lennon or Mick Jagger walked through the door. I told him that the attendant would be right back, and then said, rather lamely, it was really cool to see him . He just kind of grimaced and backed out the door. He wasn't really into the whole famous celebrity thing. A private person. I thought about it after and thought I should have asked him about the national recreation area issue. My starstruck moment! :)

I met Adams and his wife in Monterey in April 1982. Such a gentle, humble, friendly man, as was his wife, Virginia Best Adams.

@@36on22 I do have Minor White; in the last sentence. He was my mentor, Roger Mertin’s mentor. We all lived in Rochester, NY.

Thanks for all the work you put in these videos. So glad to have found this channel and subscribed right away. Waiting to see the work of many other photographers from around the world added here. Hope you can showcase Martin Chambi's work in the series. He was an indigenous Peruvian photographer and I find his work as inspiring as Ansel Adams'.
