  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse continues the story of Miles Morales in one of the best ways imaginable. And much like I discussed in my video about the fiirst movie (Into The Spider-Verse - Greatness Through Reversal), a lot of its strength comes from reversals. But even more than that, the movie is just really smart. Smart to the point of being cool. It's like Sam Rockwell or Captain Jack Sparrow... it can entertain you effortlessly. How? Irony and choice. So in today's Film Perfection, let's see what exactly Across the Spider-Verse does to be so clever and witty, and we can do that too!

    This movie proves three things.
    1. Animation is not just targeted for kids.
    2. People are not tired of superhero movies, just tired of mediocre ones with no passion and creativity involved.
    3. When great writers have full control of the story they're making without the studio interference, the result will be top notch.

One line I feel a lotta people slept on when they insisted Miguel is "completely in the wrong". When Miles interferes with an alleged canon event in Spider-man India's universe, Jessica states that "If we're lucky, we can stop it from swallowing the universe. We're not often lucky." (might be paraphrasing a little). So yes, while that particular incident could well be Spot's doing, that small bit of dialogue shows they're not just making shit up and have dealt with this multiple times before. On the flip side, Miguel remarking that not every Spider-man goes through all the same canon events means he might not be right about THIS occasion. And that's what makes the conflict great: There's evidence supporting both sides and until it's all over, you can't say who's in the right.

Parker - Stan Lee's original creation defines all the SpiderMan - but, i'm sorry, in film, Parker has never been developed as well as Miles in the SpiderVerse films.
What they've done to Peter in No Way Home is a tragedy. I don't even like 'him' [the character not the actor] anymore. He's an entitled Mary Sue character. I mean he nearly destroys the multiverse because he wants everyone to forget his mistakes - *but* also wants to keep his super model girlfriend. He also kills his Aunt but the film doesn't care and just thinks having Tobey and Andrew back is "more fun stuff".
Finally No Way Home disrespects it's other characters including Strange who is a hapless buffoon and Osborn - who somehow 'cured' by what amounts to chemical castration from Parker.
In terms of story logic Parker's 'cure' is both an evil and hypocritical act [he *cures* everyone by STRIPPING THEIR POWERS] , and it wont' work.
Osborn is a villain by *choice* - who took the serum he made in order to make himself powerful as power is what he believes in.
Osborn didn't choice to make a different decision. He was simply ironically declared "cured" to Parker's evil and stupid acts could be justified for the child target audience.

Across the Spider-Verse is an absolute marvel in animated cinema. Everything from the story to the animation was perfectly well done. Phil Lord and Chris Miller have created a new unique way to tell amazing stories. They learned the medium of animation and improved it when they mixed classic 2D with modern 3D to create the Spider-Verse.
When Lord and Miller made this style, they realized they didn't want to compete with other animation studios like Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks, and the joy of animated movies is the medium of animation itself.
Gwen’s watercolour world was beautiful, the Spot was terrifying, the live-action scenes felt similar to Roger Rabbit as we’re building up to a much bigger story, the Spider-People have a lot of creatively well-designed suits, Spider-Punk rocks, and that dark cliffhanger with Prowler 42 Miles left us in chills. It was amazingly satisfying in every way.
The animators at Sony Pictures Animation gave it their all for this sequel, and I hope they do their best for Beyond the Spider-Verse.
With a lot of amazing 2D/3D Spider-Verse style projects like Klaus, The Mitchells, Marvel’s What If…?, The Bad Guys, Arcane, The Last Wish, Nimona, Entergalactic, and TMNT Mutant Mayhem, this hybrid animation style has become a seal of quality in the medium of animation.
"Animation is Cinema. Animation is not a Genre for Kids, it's a Medium."
    - Guillermo Del Toro
"Animation offers a medium of storytelling and visual entertainment which can bring pleasure and information to people of all ages everywhere in the world."

9:54 one other thing is that is how Latina mothers are. You don't call them by my first name, you are never allowed in the son's room alone (especially without the parents knowing), and they are dead set on having their mijo always be their mijo. That was a normal Latino conversation with all of that hidden meaning you pointed out where Latinos would get it and other people who may not have those "customs" still feel like they get it. Great writing.

Prior to this movie video games like Spider-Man: Edge of Time and Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions were the closest to ever utilising Miguel as a character and giving him a compelling narrative outside of the comics. Fun fact: In Edge of Time Miguel was voiced by Christopher Daniel Barnes who is best known for voicing Spider-Man in the 90s cartoon while in Shattered Dimensions he was voiced by Dan Gilvezan who voiced Spider-Man in the 80s cartoon and is best known for voicing Bumblebee G1 Transformers. But wait, there's more. Josh Keaton who is best known for starring in The Spectacular Spider-Man voiced The Amazing Spider-Man in Edge of Time while in Shattered Dimensions he voiced The Ultimate Spider-Man (who wears a symbiote in that game and has total control over it). As for The Amazing Spider-Man he was voiced by Neil Patrick Harris, the same guy who starred in Spider-Man: The New Animated Series. You can tell the voice director knew what he was doing when he gathered these people to voice their respective characters.

This film does a great job in many ways. Miles and Gwen's relationship, the struggle of being Spider-Man, and the struggle outside of the mask. Having so many perspectives made this so engaging. You have Miles, Gwen, Hobie, Peter B. Parker, and Miguel's views on the canon. It gives you a lot to think about.
Especially since, after watching this film, you could see the cracks in Miguel's canon theory start to form. That is what happens in Mumbattan, and the dimension Miguel went to isn't the same. Mumbattan only started to glitch because of Spot's dark matter. We don't know what really causes that other dimension to disappear.
When Gwen asked if he knew what would happen if Miles broke the canon, he responds with a threat. So there has to be another reason.

    • @jaxxpool9630
      @jaxxpool9630 9 місяців тому

@@orangenostril I’m also talking about the writing. For example, there’s a scene where Miles and Gwen are hanging upside down right after Gwen gets Spot’s location on her watch. But for some reason, she doesn’t go to pursue him and stays with Miles, wasting time. Also in the Vulture fight, Miguel tells Gwen about a spider society he does not want her to be a part of AND after telling her it’s classified. Another example is Peter bringing a baby into a fight, which is terrible parenting and should’ve left her with MJ or a baby sitter. I’m pretty these criticisms and the “random plot holes” you mentioned massively affects the movie and it contributes to why it’s really one of the worst superhero movies ever, let alone worst Spider Man movie. There are many more problems I can list if you want, but it’ll flood the comment section.

Just yesterday I saw a video about how comics are not as great as they once were, same with super hero movies and etc. And here comes this MASTERPIECE to prove everyone and everything wrong.
This is genuinely one of my favorite movies of all time and doesn't even have like those massive set pieces and lots of action, but just the emotional weight of it all is enough to carry my attention so hard that I literally didn't look at anywhere but my TV for TWO HOURS. 1. It's animated beautifully
    2. The villain has motives that are understandable and isn't made into a joke
    3. The story is a great deconstruction of what it means to be spider-man, Spider-man isn't about what events everyone should follow, it's about having the strength and courage to be your own person
    4. The soundtrack is pretty epic, not just the ones artists made but the score by Daniel Pemberton mades the movie work so well
    5. every character is animated differently which I find to be genius not just the dozens of dozens of spider people
