Avatar: The Way of Water finally came out to blow up the box office. It didn't make 200 Morbillion dollars like Morbius, sadly, but it did manage to pull people in. And that's quite curious since it's three hours long and not a property that people care about like with Avengers Endgame. It's secret weapon in keeping people hooked and entertained, though, is playing out like a video game. We often talk about the video game movie curse as a bad thing, but today let's see how you can mine great things from building your movie like a video game.

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Avatar: The Way of Water reaches new heights and explores undiscovered depths as James Cameron returns to the world of Pandora in this emotionally packed action adventure. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water launches the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure. All of this against the breathtaking backdrop of Pandora, where audiences are introduced to new Na'vi cultures and a range of exotic sea creatures that populate the majestic oceans. Nominated for numerous Academy Awards® including Best Picture, the James Cameron-directed film became the third highest-grossing box office film of all-time and set a new benchmark for visual effects. Runtimes don't bother people so long as you keep them engaged, which is why people will binge an 8 episode series in one sitting.
James Cameron can typically get away with longer runtimes because he's so good at world building. He has been since the first Terminator film and Aliens, then later the Abyss. Everything feels like it's supposed to in his movies, which helps sell the narrative.

Sure, when something interesting is being built. There's nothing interesting at all about Pandora, just a repeat of generic alien visuals I've seen a million times already. The factions are unbelievable and it's impossible to take the threat of the humans seriously with how bafflingly incompetent they are. Not one of the characters is interesting and the cgi isn't nearly as breathtaking as people were saying. This is James Cameron, we should expect more from him.

The world of Pandora is gorgeous. It's well realized and well thought out. It follows a consistent set of rules.
And it presents a really great sense of connection with nature. It's basically the prehistoric Earth on steroids.
And the world building on Pandora also allows a look at a how well realized the human side is. Their technology looks realistic and yet futuristic. It's consistent. And it's just plain cool.
As for your claim about the visual effects. The tons and tons of visual effects awards Avatar 2 won(including a record 9 visual effects society awards) prove you demonstrably wrong.

This has been James Cameron’s style his whole career - Tell an earnest, straightforward and easy to follow story with archetypal characters he then puts through hell. He’s never been interested in complex narratives. He’d rather tell a simple story, but make it so exciting and larger than life that it feels like you’ve just survived an experience. I think he’s one of the few filmmakers who’s mostly spoiler-resistant. It doesn’t really matter that much if you know the plot ahead of time because the journey is the movie.

I felt like they had a good concept of a squad vs a family and how they were similar/different, especially since all 4 kids could embody all perspectives on the conflict (youngest girl doesn't want to fight and can't, Sigourney Weaver girl doesn't want to but can, screwup kid wants to fight but can't, and oldest son wants to and can). They could've had some really great character moments within the family and also developed the squad into more than just faceless cat people who get killed almost instantly, but I guess that just was as important as W H A L E S

Cameron gets all the accolades for VFX, cinematic innovations and incredible action set pieces and he gets criticized for simplistic derivative storytelling. I would argue he is as good a storyteller as any other director working today. There is something visceral and universal that he taps into with every movie he makes and he's gotten it down to a fine art. And it is fine art. It's incredibly difficult in today's movie marketplace to make something that is so accessible on a global scale. I cannot wait for the next Avatar movies. In 5yrs time I am confident that more than half of the Top 10 all-time highest grossing movies of all time will be James Cameron movies.

I adore this movie. I love the first movie, but not for the characters, but for the setting. Pandora is just a beautiful world with a creative religious and spiritual connection between all biological lifeforms. It just adds so much more to the world itself. The second movie finally made me care about characters, but not for the returning characters, but for new characters. I love the character of Lo'ak. He feels the burden of living up to his father's impossible expectations of him. And with his older brother Neteyam basking in his father's praises, he feels like he can't compare. That is such an interesting family dynamic that creates a lot of tension and well-deserved character growth. At the end, after Neteyam's death, Jake is rescued by Lo'ak and he mistakes his youngest son for Neteyam, having not fully grasped that his oldest son is dead, and having expected that the son who would rescue him was Neteyam. Lo'ak corrected his father, saying "it's me". He proceeded to help his father learn how to control his breathing and heart rate in order to stay underwater for a long period of time so they can escape the sunken ship, and after finally getting out, Jake says the single most important thing for Lo'ak. _He says "I see you"._ In the first movie, "I see you" is a phrase said by the Na'vi that means that you see and understand someone at the deepest level. For Jake to say that to his own son meant that he finally saw that his son was, in fact, worthy and capable. He finally saw his son's potential and purpose, which actually says a lot about Jake as well as Lo'ak. You do have flawed heroes in Marvel movies, but the nuances of the dynamics at play, not just with Jake and Lo'ak, but with Neytiri as well (there is more to unpack regarding her tense relationship with Spider), makes this film infinitely better than most films that are made for an easy cash grab (cough Disney cough). I saw this movie 3 times and I am excited to see how the story progresses!

Puss In Boots 2, Honor Among Thieves, and Avatar 2 blow (almost) every Marvel and DC project out from the last 3 years of the water. Shang Chi and Black Panther 2 were fine, Doctor Strange had its moments, Antman 3 was bad, Black Adam was blegh, and I didn’t see Shazam 2. The only exception is The Batman, but that speaks more to the commitment to Matt Reeve’s quality vision than to the DC IP.

I was expecting this film to be put into Failure.
    - The voice over introduction was bad.
    - The whole second act at the beach was boring
    - Yeah the visuals are cool but not mind blowing (for me at least)
    etc...
    - Gotta be fair tho, the third act (apart from the "'where are the water people after the battle), it wow

Pros: The Younger cast was fantastic
      Cons: Mediocre story and characters

@@chasehedges6775 NGL I cringed during the intro when he does an information dump on his children.
Yes they're cool but there was too many kids, so less character development

I was waiting for you to cover this movie! For me it’s the best one I’ve seen so far, just because of the facts you mentioned. The entire movie felt like it was necessary, not a single second felt that it was there just to make the movie longer, unlike end game!
Thank you for explaining the details in such a good way! This made me realise why every second of the movie felt great! Top tier youtuber right here! ❤
