    When I first saw this, as several others have stated below, I went "Oh no, this is going to be really bad isn't it?". Then to my surprise it turns out to be a wonderful piece of music. You have suceeded at doing something I did not think possible. You have captured the feel of Earth all the while remaining loyal to the style and 'sound' of Holst. If this were inserted into a concert or cd of the Planets and I had never heard it before, I would have been convinced this was Holst.

    Planet Earth, so underrated that originally Holst didn't include her in the original suite. In our hectic life we perceive the reality like we lived on a piece of "terrain". But in the reality, we are a species kindly hosted on the most precious and important of all planets we do know. I love how the composer mixed different moods and instruments here, and the ending reminds me that as a "thank you" we need to care about our great host and express our gratitude, as in this wonderful piece of music.

    I've had a "first edition" Columbia pressing ( 78 RPM ) of Holst' 1926 recording of The Planets for amost 40 years . -- One of my true favorites. When I saw your "Earth", I said " Oh no, Another one of these contemporary composers trying to out-do one of the great masters." BUT , Apon listening to your composition, I must say that you've done a most commendable job in capturing the tonal essence of Holsts' original. Best of luck to you.

  • @wcsxwcsx

      You're in luck, my friend! ua-cam.com/play/PLbPnu_ZaPDk2GHEVs06qwGdGK9dRRFUye.html has all eight planets, with Pluto to round it out. 2006 was the year it was reclassified as a dwarf planet, but the Royal Scottish Nat'l Orchestra did an amazing job with it. Even though I decided to go in distance from the Sun, I think you'll be quite pleased. All seven original planets in the suite are best done by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, but I agree with what you said about Holst's posthumous delight. It isn't every day that a composer comes up with a piece for the planets and dwarf planets.

    This is a superb addition to the Holstian "Planetary" fold by Clément MEPAS ... so in keeping with Holst's style and use of orchestra. By contrast Colin Matthews' "Pluto - The Renewer" is in my opinion simply unworthy of any association with "The Planets", and I would suggest the field remains open for somebody to compose a truly worthy Holstian piece piece for Pluto! Thinking about it - how unlikely would it have been had the first effort actually worked! Why don't you do it Clément? You've acquitted yourself so well with "Earth - The Bringer Of Life".

    • @vaughan446
      @vaughan446 Рік тому +1

      Here is my critique of Colin Matthews' "Pluto - The Renewer".
      To be truly worthy of it's association with Holst's Planets, this final piece surely should have been equally melodic and memorable. In my opinion Colin Matthews' "Pluto - The Renewer", composed as a natural addition to the Holst "Planetary" fold, ironically and sadly remains outside of the fold ... like the planet itself (sadly). Unlike all seven of Holst's planetary pieces, which have drawn me back to listen to time and time again over the decades, this effort by Matthews is so totally unmemorable, lacking musical panache and emotional sophistication, I doubt if I'll be back for a second play.

    • @Lil_Yuri
      @Lil_Yuri 4 місяці тому

      While I won't comment on the "worthiness" (and probably shouldn't given my lack of real foray into classical music as a genre), you are correct in that in comparison to the other planets, aside from the "jump scare" crescendos, Pluto doesn't really evoke any distinct emotions from me like the others, and is, well, forgettable; while it certainly sounds Holst-ish, it pales in comparison to the rest of the suite. This is not forgettable, it's distinct and moving-- and moves around quite a bit, encapsulating several emotional states; given the nature of earth and how earth is teeming with life and geological events and thus is constantly in flux, this is fitting. A bit more modern sounding, but still obviously an homage to Holst's original suite.
      But that said, Pluto isn't even a "real planet", so if we were to go by that criteria, the suite is complete 🙂

      That is true, as it was originally excluded bc it was written from the perspective of Earth being the center of the universe, I believe.

      Not only that but if Pluto was added to the end, then Earth and Pluto would balance each other with Earth representing birth and Pluto representing death.

    • @Lil_Yuri
      @Lil_Yuri 4 місяці тому

      I would put it at the end, but I like a satisfying ending and Neptune left me wanting more very badly, however I didn't care for Pluto, just a bit too busy, which is great when trying to communicate "madness" but not quite melodic enough to fit in imho, just a matter of personal taste. This would make a perfect closer as it ties in elements of several other pieces of the suite.

    Terra wasn't included in the original suite because She's not a planet in the Classical sense (a "wandering star") from our perspective as beings dwelling on the surface. Makes me wonder what attributes would be assigned to Terra by astrologists on another planet
