"Even those listeners who had studied the score for months were taken aback by the unexpected clamour of Mars. During Jupiter the charwomen working in the corridors put down their scrubbing-brushes and began to dance. In Saturn the isolated listeners in the dark, half-empty hall felt themselves growing older at every bar. But it was the end of Neptune that was unforgettable, with its hidden chorus of women's voices growing fainter and fainter in the distance, until the imagination knew no difference between sound and silence" Imogen Holst (the composers daughter) records her thoughts and observations of the 1918 premiere

Well, that's true but it was Lucas who asked him to inspire from Holst and some other classical composers. At the beginning Lucas wanted classical music for Star Wars, but Steven Spielberg convinced him to hire Williams.
I agree wholeheartedly. I haven't even finished the show, and Sleepytime is already my favorite episode. It genuinely moves me and brings tears to my eyes, and that doesn't usually happen with me. It's truly one of the most beautiful animations I've ever seen.
This song is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. I come back to this song a lot and listen to it. I played orchestra in high school & we played this song my sophomore year. I hated every single part of high school because I never fit in anywhere. But orchestra was my escape. Every time I hear this song I start crying because I’m reminded about how music like this can make you forget about the rest of the world for a moment and just enjoy the melody. Nothing can ever replicate that feeling.
Wow. Such a bittersweet story. I played 5th horn on this suite for the Idyllwild Orchestra at UCLA back in 2003 and it was the greatest musical moment of my life. I definitely understand.
I've always had a softspot for this piece of music, but Bluey made me tear up, and now every time I just hear "I'm a big girl now" and I tear up again lol
@@mach2223 this is correct. The planets are named after the Roman gods. Mercury = the messenger, Venus = love, Mars = war etc. Jupiter was the King of the Roman gods (similar to Zeus).
For Star Wars, check out Sir William Walton: Spitfire Prelude and Fugue. There are a couple passages in this that are used in SW. Conan has definite influences, too.
No one should let their lives pass them by without experiencing this piece in an actual music hall. The presence of all those brass instruments, making it look less like a symphony orchestra and more like a high school marching band with strings on the side, is just an unforgettable experience.
The very first time I watched “sleepy-time” with my kids, I couldn’t help but cry, especially after Chilli (mum)’s line, my eldest son asked “just like you daddy?” I balled. Bluey is more than a kids show, it’s life. 😢😢😢
Congratulations to NASA for orbit insertion of spacecraft Juno. Appropiate music to celebrate the good news. I also hear influences for Star Wars, Star Trek, Hobbit and maybe more, the composer was a genious.
Few things make me cry, but somehow Bingo's heartbreaking separation anxiety paired with beautiful backgrounds and Gustav Holst's Jupiter did it for me. Good job Bluey.
@@JonGV79 This hit WAY harder than it had business hitting. I cried when I heard it, and I can't remember the last time any TV show made me cry tears of joy.
In middle school, I played this song as a violinist with my orchestra, and it was such a beautiful and moving piece. Freshman year into high school, I started playing the clarinet, and this was our warm-up song before every song we played. So much nostalgia with this song. The happiest and saddest moments of my life. Moments I'll never forget and that will forever live on with me.
i encourage everybody here to watch the episode Sleepytime from season 2 of Bluey. this piece is used in the episode to some of the best effect i have ever seen in animation EVER, period! i get goosebumps thinking about it and listening to this. truly an awe inspiring piece of music and the episode equal to it.
Watching bluey the other day with my daughter thinking it was a really well made kids cartoon, then this episode came on and I cried my eyes out. Really took me by surprise. Absolutely beautiful episode made with with passion. I recommend to anyone to watch it
Actually, I saw that episode the other day with my kid, and I thought "hey, they ripped that song off from Bathory." But here I come to find that Bathory kind of ripped it off. The song "hammerheart" has this exact same melody of the middle part of this song. In any case, glad I discovered the link
I know marching band will never compare to the orchestrated version (maybe dci) , but the first time I heard this, I was in 6th grade learning the flute, and my brother's marching band played this. When I listen to them play it at state, I was moved to tears and my only dream was to play this. This piece is what pushed me to stay a musician and I'm so glad I get to play this in marching band five years later. I hope we get to inspire someone, like how five years ago, my brother's marching band inspired me.
Everyone talking about 2:59 - 5:00, but we need some apperciation for 1:00 - 1:24 It's so playful, and 1:34- 2:28, absolutely majestic and triumphant, it also sound a lot like "the orgy" track from Conan the Barbarian.
That first passage you like was the direct inspiration for The Lost Woods Theme (aka Saria's Song) from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. You have excellent ears!
my violin teacher taught me half of 2:59-4:55. it was her favourite piece and she wanted to perform for the school music night. sadly, she died september this year. i miss her and this song will always remind me of her, so i’m going to learn the full piece and perform it in her place. 💗
I feel the same as you my orchestra teacher had me play this with her she is like an older sister to me and when we played on stage I cried it is such an emotional piece and I love it dearly
2:59 is probably the best music ever made in my opinion. Better than handles Messiah, Wagner, and Bach. It has always inspired me and gotten me through tough times and I pray whoever listens to it knows how much they are loved by the one who Created Jupiter and the rest of the Universe!
+Matthew Matousek good for Jupiter, not the rest of the planets. Pretty sure Jupiter losing mass would actually affect the orbital paths of the rest of the planets.
Daniel Chapman it's really mass not weight get it right 😂 but really it probably hasn't because mass is the amount of matter in a certain amount of area so it has the same mass but it's more dense
2:58 Bingo: I have to go. I'm a big girl now...... The sun (aka Chilli): Remember I'll always be here even if you can't see me, because I love you. *Outside the dreamworld you see Chilli kiss Bingo on the head as her daughter sleeps peacefully before retiring for the night*
This episode is exactly why I'm here right now - I've seen very little of this show but I just walked in to my boys (4 & 5) watching it as they fell asleep for the night. When the credits were done and the music stopped they started clapping. It was beautiful.
Watched this last night with my son. I had to walk out at the sun part. Absolutely lost it. I havent cried on a movie in years and tv never has made me. Stunning.

I lokenthem all. Mercury is so martial, that relentless treading of rhythm like the unstoppable advance of tanks, an amazingly new piece of equipment at the time. Venus is so tender, full of love and longing. Saturn, our sunset of life, fermenting and pondering in whether we had measured up. Uranus, cold and untouchable, distant and mysterious.

I love how they used a modified version of this in the Australian cartoon Bluey episode Sleepytime! It reminded me to revisit the entire The Planets suite
This is so Star Trek, especially the strings and the trumpet in the begginning. As someone who grew up watching TOS, this makes me so emotional. Such a powerful composition.
They are one and the same...they inspired each other...to achieve greatness, humility and appreciation for what's important...the expansion of knowledge, peace and passion for exploration.
Holst knew how to rip a man's chest open and make him feel all the emotions in the world all at once, then close it up; leaving them irrevocably changed.
For those who are here from "Sleepytime" I just made the connection that in that episode, Bandit is the one associated with Jupiter and I'd say "Bringer of Jollity" describes him well
I played this once when I was younger in orchestra and I’m so excited I finally found the piece again. I absolutely love it and hope to perform it many more times 3:00-4:56 just pure emotion written in music. Honestly one of the most beautiful pieces in classical music history
My orchestra class played this piece starting at 2:58, and I just recently moved and am going to a new school which doesn't have orchestra, and man I miss it so much. Listening to this brings back so many great memories.
7:07 the dramatic turn as Jupiter makes sure you don't think that it is only a happy cheerful planet then 7:27 it's like nothing happened. Honestly one of my favorite parts because you hear each and every one of the instruments and they all come together perfectly and beautifully to create such a feeling.
2:58 O_O I have no words to describe how fantastic this is! The whole thing is epic, but the part that starts there... Just O_O It sounds oddly familiar too, like I heard it sometime before I found this piece.
I loved 2.59 to 4.58 i school, the hymn I vow to thee my country before I even knew it was Jupiter, oh my joy at realising it was from The Planet Suite. I never tired of listening to all the planets.

I lived in Columbus from 2005-2010.
Listening to this, one can definitely hear how The Planets greatly influenced John Williams' composing.
Agreed, the Imperial March is very similar to "Mars"
John Williams was greatly inspired by Ralph Vaughn-Williams' ( 1872 - 1958 ) and Eric Wolfgang Korngold's ( 1897 - 1957 ) music as well.
Oh wow. I hadn't made the comparison before!
Well, especially Mars, if you compare it to Star Wars C:
Well, that's true but it was Lucas who asked him to inspire from Holst and some other classical composers. At the beginning Lucas wanted classical music for Star Wars, but Steven Spielberg convinced him to hire Williams.
The middle part is used beautifully on an episode of Bluey called "Sleepytime".

Then you might like to go hear the song Call Any Vegetable (Zappa - Just Another Band From LA) At about 3:10 you'll hear a part of this song.

Missing from the Title: "The bringer of Jollity" Holst gave a character to each of the planets. And this is by far my favorite
Astrology ascribes character to the planets, Holst put it into music.
The subtitles are actually taken from the greek/roman pantheon's definition of the gods. Cool nevertheless.
@@mach2223 this is correct. The planets are named after the Roman gods. Mercury = the messenger, Venus = love, Mars = war etc. Jupiter was the King of the Roman gods (similar to Zeus).

To all people: John Williams was inspired from Gustav Holst, he did all the Star Wars Themes, Jurassic Park etc after that.
Actually the start of this reminds me more of the "The Magnificent Seven", then into one of the Conan the Barbarian movies. :)
Sean Hazard It reminds me of " Grand Canyon Suite ", maybe because of the key they're played in.
For Star Wars, check out Sir William Walton: Spitfire Prelude and Fugue. There are a couple passages in this that are used in SW. Conan has definite influences, too.
He was influenced by many. Dvorak's New World symphony has at least 3 three different themes ripped off. Anyone remember the Jaws theme?
Dvorak New World Symphony #9 also a big inspiration for him, I think, with its "Jaws" theme, even.
No one should let their lives pass them by without experiencing this piece in an actual music hall. The presence of all those brass instruments, making it look less like a symphony orchestra and more like a high school marching band with strings on the side, is just an unforgettable experience.
