- Episode 12 of the popular IndianOil Now Hear Us series is finally here after a long delay due to circumstances beyond our control. This episode features the sublime and very tasteful vocals of Hindustani classical artiste, Priya Purushothaman.
Priya is accompanied by Shruteendra Katagade on tabla and Siddesh Bicholkar on harmonium.
According to Deepak Raja, Shuddha Kalyan has two possible interpretations: one which veers towards Bhoop and the other which veers towards Kalyan. In Priya's performance here she takes very much the former approach, with both Tivra Ma and Ni hardly audible except via meends from Pa to Ga and Sa to Dha. This is very challenging since the touch on Tivra Ma and Ni must be so slight as to be barely audible, almost subliminal. She achieves this excellently and the overall feel of the rag is definitely pentatonic, except for rare moments where she takes Ni explicitly.

Raag Bhairavi : Bandish ki Thumris - 1:30:40

It seems as though PP took more than usual time to warm up - the voice seemed to lack her usual suppleness and phirat. The vilambit especially felt a tad lacklustre, especially thinking of some of the excellent music she has churned out in the past for this channel - Nayaki for instance, is an example of her calibre and command. Could be that a live audience setting suits her more than this decidedly less dynamic studio-kind of setting. Anyhow, she is certainly a truly promising vocalist for future decades.
