I would recommend Linux Multi Media Studio. It's free and cross platform, and can do just about anything, takes proper mixing though. Also, look up Superwave P8 and DSK synthesizers if you do go LMMS, because it takes a while to get the hang of making your own, and LMMS's internal presets kind of suck. I hope that helps :)
