I don't think so, considering the reason why Undertale got to where it was was because the fans were storming the polls when they saw it was losing. Undertale fans aren't angels, but they are sore losers.

I love that A) anyone out there believed that one cannot genuinely like Undertale and can only be voting for it for "SJW" purposes or to spite other people, and B) that anyone thinks GameFAQ polls matter in even the slightest sense.

In other words it matters in the sense that if you're bored, seeing a bunch of people act like they're fighting a holy war is a good, entertaining way to kill time.

Guys, you don't understand. I've been on gamefaqs since I was 12 years old. Since 2005. And in all this time I can say that it's userbase hasn't really changed, because anyone with any vague knowledge of gamefaqs will tell you that it's a rabidly salty place.
But BEING there, on the boards, while the BGE was happening? It was fucking nuts. Dudes were shitting themselves in fury. Going "I hope anyone that votes for Undertale dies". Like, I enjoy a good shitpost, believe you me, but these folks were sincere. They took it as a personal affront that Undertale was (rightfully) winning these polls.
All in all, it was pretty hilarious. Nerds get really asshurt when their outdated games lose. :T

I think the point is that those comments were as bigoted as those who support the confederacy: they couldn't comprehend the undeniable fact that AAA games were stale and formulaic, while games like Undertale not only toys players' expectations, but also call out the the completionist for isolating themselves for getting their money's worth.

1.Normally people on GFAQs get super pissy that the same people win the same contests over and over
2.There were accusations of people using bots to inflate Undertale's ratings when actually the bots were being used to inflate all the other game's ratings!

+Unsagi The mods did an investigation into the claims and amusingly found the truth was the opposite of what was being claimed, just like FEfan56 noted. It was the other games that had bots upvoting them. Undertale actually had the highest percentage of unique votes as well, not just people voting multiple times by getting around the system.

+Xury Friday To answer your question, yes the kind of people who were writing the posts in this video do fetishize games to a ridiculous degree. I've been on gamefaqs a long time, and you can even find it happening between individual games of the same franchise/IP. Dark Souls 1 is perhaps an even stronger example than Pokemon in that regard.
fun fact: I'm not huge into Undertale or anything but when this was happening I was laughing so hard at the bitter kiddies. I actually got hatemail at tumblr calling me a toxic part of the fandom because sure I am because no one can recognize they were being ridiculous unless they were an Undertale fanboy.
I have gotten hatemail twice on tumblr in the last 4 years, TWICE and this was one of them.
I have a crappy memory but I'm sure in 10 years I will remember the time I got hatemail over a game website poll. It was wild
A+ would laugh at everyone attempting southern accents (my favorites were definitely a few of the foreign readers, you guys were amazing) while reading butthurt comments again. This was perfectly put together.

Maybe times have just changed but I was on Gamefaqs back in 2005/06 and I don't recall it being this insufferable.
It was fun seeing Undertale win. Pretty refreshing considering the "best game ever" is always one of 5 or so games any time the subject is brought up.
+WaddleDee105 And it's pretty clear that the nostalgia factor plays heavily into those 5 or so games always winning. The idea that the best video games are only the original ones made decades ago is just pricelessly stupid. If you actually judged them on actual standards of gameplay and music and controls (waiving graphics, since that wouldn't exactly be a fair comparison), most of those old games turn out to be pretty bad in comparison with the more polished games that have been made since.
Which makes sense, as bad traits of games would be ironed out over time and the general quality should be improving.
In short, the original Pokemon is a pretty bad game.

Silverizael To be fair, there are plenty of old school games that still hold up immensely well. Some of my favorite games (Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Ristar, etc) are over two decades old. It's true though that most don't hold up as well. I loved Mario 64 as a kid and it was a genius introduction to the 3D platforming genre... but it's been bested by so many other 3D platformers since that calling it "the best game ever" is a bit ridiculous.

Toby Fox, when asked about his stance on those kinds of politics, was just like "Pass" in an interview about undertale, because his goal was not to stir up political bullshit but just make a good game; It just happened to have a gay relationship in it. Honestly I'm not sure why everyone makes such a big deal about that to begin with.

I was part of this community once. I made a thread to ask for questions (I was 12 and didn't know how to forum very well), and everyone started circling like sharks around a sinking liferaft.

i can't believe i was there when this happened. it was SO FUNNY. i was on undertales side, and i remember looking through the forums and just LAUGHING at the amount of salt. it was the best thing i'd experienced and i can't believe i'd forgotten about it until now.

If Undertale had gone against Kirby Superstar or Metal Gear Solid, I wouldn't have voted for it every time. But it went against a couple of mediocre sequels, a poorly programmed but well marketed gameboy game, and Mario World

When the horse has already been picked clean by maggots it seems odd to go back and give it another beating.
It's more of a silly documentation thing. We had a lot of fun beating that horse, and this is just to take a really nice picture for the scrapbook.

My favorite part of all this wasn't mentioned in this video, but when Undertale won against Melee, GameFAQs actually did look to see if there was vote cheating going on like everyone started claiming.
There was, but no matter how many fake votes they threw at Melee, they couldn't beat people voting for Undertale.

Oh God, why do I remember some of these posts? Glad I don't go to the GameFAQs anymore. It was always a toxic place, but it's become especially awful in recent years, and this video further proves just how embarrassing and pathetic many of it's users can be.

Super Mario world and Pokemon Red/Blue are both very old games which means they are pretty meh compared to the games that Nintendo made recently and a great chunk of people are too young to have played them in their early childhood and feel nostalgia towards them. They should have put in ORAS and Mario Maker if they wanted a fair competition
Mario World has aged well enough to the point it was fair game to put it on the poll. Gen1 Pokémon definitely should've been swapped for a more recent entry in the series though.

i hope it's okay on yt to post personal opinions, but like ... i'm not sure how to feel about all of this. about undertale winning and the other games, which are usually regarded as 'the best of the best' losing.
while i do love undertale ( mainly because of the characters and just how stupidly quirky it is ), and it's a refreshing thing to see that it has won the game of the year for gamefaqs and stuff... well, i dunno. i feel like the game's a bit too overhyped, and this is coming from somebody who loves the game. while i feel like gamefaqs should have another game that won, that was different than the usual winners of the last couple of years, that people are overreacting over a friggin /voting contest/ on both sides is really... ridiculous? i guess? it's not like voting for undertale to win was "OMG THIS'LL BE THE END OF THE WORLD IF PEOPLE DON"T VOTE", and this is the same for the other side.
