  • Richard Petty ... The King.
    Gentleman Ned Jarrett.
    In a fight? Yep.
Once upon a time in the hills of western North Carolina, Jarrett issued a bit of frontier justice. Jarrett been waiting for a year or more, for just the right moment, at just the right track, in hopes that Petty would receive a message loud and clear, without running the risk of actually getting injured.
Of course, Petty didn't exactly take kindly to being booted out of the lead and expressed his profound displeasure following the race. A third future NASCAR Hall of Famer ... Maurice Petty, Richard's brother ... also got involved in what very nearly became an all-out brawl.

Two great guys. It would be hard to come across any two fellas as nice as Richard Petty and Ned Jarrett. This incident just goes to show how the competitive nature of NASCAR racing can even cause two cool headed guys like these to temporarily turn into combatants in the heat of the moment.

This has similarities to the near-fight between Johnny Benson & David Stremme in 2004 at Bristol after the spring Busch race.
Kevin Harvick had wrecked Stremme & Stremme decided to retaliate. Only problem was he wrecked Johnny Benson thinking he was Harvick. Stremme found Benson, already out of his car & with his crew, on pit road. Johnny walks up to him wanting to know why he did that. But Stremme's crew chief was having none of it actually thinking Johnny was gonna punch or attack Stremme or something (Yeah right 😆). After the crew chief distracts Johnny, that's when David gets out of the car with his helmet on. By that time an official separates Johnny from everything & a fight between the pit crews was prevented.
Just like Richard & Ned in this story, nothing happened against or between the 2 since.

I like Ned's Helmet in the picture. And the car of course.

Ned is aging gracefully. He hasn't changed much.

Zero respect for Mike - when i saw him push the MRN announcer out of the way so he could interview a driver for tv - that told me all i needed to know - That man was doing his job - but because he was a radio reporter Mike had no consideration -
"Im Michael Waltrip! Dont you know who i am !"
    Screw him
