Clough - The Brian Clough Story (2009)

  • 2009 marks the 30th anniversary of Nottingham Forest’s first European Cup triumph, masterminded by Brian Clough. A provincial football club broke and slipping towards Football League Division Three when he took charge, had conquered England and Europe inside three years. He achieved many great things with the clubs he managed, most notably Derby County and Nottingham Forest which would be considered impossible and unthinkable now. Clough would probably disagree but he was more than just a football manager.

Every one sings of the Ferguson's and Mourinhos, but this man (and Peter Taylor) took two second tier sides Derby County, and Nottingham forest to promotion to the top tier then the title of the top tier in successive seasons. Nottingham Forest then won the equivalent of the champions league two seasons on a trot. He didn't have the resources of a Manchester United or a Chelsea. What happened is literally unparalleled. A sad man, over opioniated, but in my opinion the best football manager of all time.

Sir Alex took an average Aberdeen and broke the old firm and won the league 3 times. Won the Cup winners Cup by beating Real Madrid.
He then took an ailing, mid table Man Utd, promoted youth players and made them world beaters. Sir Alex is as great as people say.

And he knows, like all the Leeds players of that time, that it would have been Leeds United lifting the European Cup under Brian Clough and likely more than one championship. My dad, a life long Leeds fan, football referee of some note, personal friend of Billy Bremner, Eddie Gray and Peter Lorimer, despite the issues at the club and his loyalty to the players, was utterly heartbroken when Clough left Leeds... I remember him talking to me about it, I was 10 years old, "that is the worst decision the club have ever made son, we've just let the best manager in the world walk away from our team". And he was right. RIP Brian. Respect.

I would say this to the Clough family, the film version 'The Damned United' is a brilliant testament to the great man. It shows him in a really affectionate light and anyone watching the film could only come away with a real liking for his abilities and attitude. I think given what has happened this week with Allardyce that film is a refreshing and more honest look at football. Clough was easily the best manager England never had - it is a travesty on the FA they never picked him. Shame on those people - not that they seem to learn from their constant poor choices of England manager.

Liverpool fan here. I'd personally rate Clough as the best English soccer manager of modern times. Above any Liverpool manger and even Alex Ferguson. There is a sense that what Clough achieved boiled down even more than any other team's achievements to the manager himself. He made the clubs he managed successful and put Forrest on the national and then international stage front and center. He almost 'invented' Forrest and as Alan Hansen said from playing against them in every possible competition, "They were a real team in every sense of the word." He didn't win as much as some manager, but you knew what he did win as due to the 'Clough' approach and his partnership with Taylor.

He might not have been the greatest English manager in the history of the game but he'd be in the Top 1.
Thank you for this. A beautifully and lovingly made documentary which brings warmth to the heart and a lump to the throat. Nice one.

Brian Clough absolute legend both as a player and manager, what he did at Nottingham Forest will never be repeated.
