George Macready was a great, great actor and really the core of this series. He should have won Emmys for this performance, portraying one of the great villains of television history. Too bad he left. He died in 1973.
He made two movies after leaving. He had emphysema and it usually took about 5 years to finally end a life at that time. My dad was much younger but was in the same disease trajectory as George. He even died the same year.
In retrospect Martin Peyton's departure was the beginning of the end for Peyton Place. He had been behind so many of the plots and schemes throughout the series. His character was so important that I'm surprised George Macready wasn't ever in the opening credits.
Yes, I agree. I've watched this series all the way through to the end, but now when I watch it, I stop after Martin Peyton leaves. The upcoming story line are a snooze fest.
This show went downhill in stages, but always had at least one or two great plots to make you sit or fast forward through the sappy or weak plots. But now, the last player of the last great plot is leaving... I am going to skip ahead to the episode where Constance and Elliot blow Peyton Place and call it good...
Your idea of paradise is living hell for others. Steven and Rodney both spelled out some truths about their grandfather in his face. At least they’re on the same page here. Steven is right about MP being a destroyer rather than creator. Even his parting message to Steven wasn’t one of love but mean spirited.
Dr Rossi being Head of Hospital has the time to be personal assistant to Martin Peyton to accompany him to Boston. I recall he personally took Rachel to the sanatorium too. A bit ridiculous
How does that man Peyton gets away with his misdemeanours? Because his family allow it by going along with his plans for them! Shame on Betty and Rodney.
It bothers me that Leslie never faced any consequences for what all he did. He let Elliot spend 18 years in prison by withholding evidence; he tried to blackmail Connie regarding Allison's birth; he did blackmail Betty into stealing Peyton's will, and then, he contracted for Peyton's murder. If anyone in PP belongs in prison, it's Leslie Harrington.
George Macready and Ruth Warrick added so greatly to the show..who cares about Allison - apparently, no one: shortly after Rachel's departure, Allison became a non-issue..everyone loves a villain, so Martin Peyton will be sorely missed..and this is the last full season of PP, with the final season ending June 2 of '69......
Mr. Peyton leaving ends my interest in this series. The Jill Smith story line is dreadful and so are the other upcoming story lines. Once Martin leaves, I start over with Episode 1, or move on to something else.
"suki44883," "start over with Episode 1" -- alright. Earlier the better with this series. IMO, though, on second pass I'll skip over Claire Morton (Mariette Hartley), Stella Chernak (Emmy winner, (Lee Grant), George [Anderson (Henry Beckman)]-goes-crazy; and bemoan the fact Ann Howard (Susan Oliver) captivated us for only three months (49 half-hour) instead of Oliver's planned, contracted 12 months; and Allison's dear, wise old Uncle Matte. (Warner Anderson) left much too soon [exit after first year]
Someone needs to be the bad guy. You can’t have a show with only good guys. Where would Dallas have been without JR? Just remember that the world was changing during this time and the public may have wanted something else.
@@suki44883 Actually the Reverend is just one of Peyton Place' most eligible -- and HE'S not a bachelor. Two of the three bachelors mentioned were still 'in the running.'
can we have two episodes WITHOUT a doe-eyed girl?? good grief. also, the chick that works at the cider barrel is Juanita from the bluebird in Mayberry.
Juanita was often mentioned but never seen. Barney was seeing her and Thelma Lou at the same time. Thelma Lou was the more "respectable " public girlfriend.
If little self-respect Steven, Betty & Rod had they wouldn't have been there listening to MP's nonsense. How dare you Mr Peyton????? Felt so bad for Steven, Betty how could you take that????
instead of soothing situation Peyton aggravates more, telling Steven in face that Betty and Rod belong to each other and causes jealousy each other. That only can cause negative chain of event, so why on earth Peyton does that, was not enough the evil he already did? Then again, I am leaving you that, I am not going to leave you anything, like cat paling with mice, damn, just leave and divide once and forever and finish abusing people with your damn money and deed He was so much more appealing in previous series
democolor42 I'll really miss Martin Peyton. Yes, "Controlling" was his middle name, and he loved moving people around like on a chess board as pawns....but that was (for the lack of a better word) his "charm". He was someone you loved to hate. Not a warm & fuzzy grandfather by any means, but a villain the show sorely needed.
After Weber I kind of lost respect, because you can forgive that human chess playing but can not two face action, the way he allures to kill, was scary, anything but that, if he investigated and proved weber killed and then sent him to prison would be different, but that giving expensive watch, befriend, become "kinder" and then do that terrible thing, I pray never to meet "That" type of people,, they are the most dangerous, but Jacks became great fun to watch
Thank heaven MacReady's left the series! I could jump for joy; however, I think I'll have to faint first! Never thought I'd see this moment arrive. Amen & alleluia! He was so annoying an actor in this. It's really too bad the writers made Martin Peyton so integral to the story arc & its characters. It became so tedious & tiresome have him acting as Peyton Place's puppeteer, everyone dancing to his invisible strings. If MacReady had been a more likeable or engaging actor, without that whispery voice, perhaps I'd've had a different attitude toward him. In the past, in roles preceding the advent of Peyton Place, I accepted & liked MacReady in the various roles he played but only in small, limited doses. He's not the kind of actor who wears well over long, seemingly endless, exposure. Anyway, enough! Good riddance to him! I'm speaking for myself only, of course. I know many of you revelled in his reptilian-like performance as Martin Peyton & have expressed sadness over his departure. Thats fine. For me, he simply wore out his welcome long, long, LONG ago! It seems the camerawork in this episode is more sophisticated & imaginative than heretofore. I've noticed & approve. Hope it continues! Joyce Jillson an appealing addition to the town where time stands still, in the shadow of the Mill. In addition to being easy on the eyes, I like her voice very much. And once again, there are so many scenes where someone doesn't want to talk, answer questions, and/or simply has or wants to leave but the other party continues bombarding the person with endless questions, ignoring their irritation or refusal; then, when the person begins to walk away, the other party grabs their arm and PREVENTS them from leaving! I know it's simply TV drama but, golly, it annoys me! Steven does this to Betty inside the courthouse in this episode. Does it bother anybody else?
McCready's Martin Peyton was the catalyst for so many plots on 'Peyton Place'....I'm surprised you're happy to see the back of him. In my opinion, the last 100 episodes remaining of the series (following McCready's departure) were the most lackluster episodes of the entire series. 😞
