- Here is a video describing how to repair a noisy blower motor in a 89 Toyota p-up. Now as I mentioned in the video this applies to most vehicles making this noise. They all work about the same. I would have provided information on how to test the blower resistor electrically but didn't think any one would wanna be bored with the details.
How To Repair A Noisy / Non Functioning ( High Speed Only ) Blower Motor In An '89 Toyota Pickup
Super helpful, even 6 years later. Thank you for making such a straightforward video
you sound like you know what your talking about - how refreshing in the automotive repair world - and you're a natural in front of the camera - thanks for the great vid .....
Thanks - one of the more simple, down to earth, and comprehensive, posts I have viewed.
Rock Star. I love simple, short and straightforward stuff like this. Any video under 4 minutes is a good thing, so many vids just drag and drag on .. well done South Main !
1991 SR52WD: Actually rode without low speed since 1994 when I spilled coffee (or some time thereafter). Anyway, I pulled all air conditioning parts off the truck to clean and replace 0-rings 2 years ago but didn't check the blower motor resistor. Yesterday, while trying to get cool, it defaulted to only high speed. I think you just saved the day.
Great guide! I wish I would have watched this video to the end before I started on my pickup. I spent about 40 minutes trying to figure out how to get the dang cage back in the housing before watching you do it in about 30 seconds. Everything is working as it should now :)
Thanks for showing how the tech doesn't really change that much over the years specifically the blower resistor. I watched a recent video where you had a vehicle with a bad blower circuit ground and pointed out the fan control still work the same way. very cool.
Felt like I was watching the video over again while doing it on my Tacoma, thank you very much saved me a 200$ quote from a shop I’m never going back too
Excellent video, i just replaced both my Cabin filter and engine filter on my 2006 rav 4 and came across this problem.
To my surprise when i brought my rav 4 to original toyota dealership they weren't even nice enough to somewhat clean out the cabin filter before they put it back in
.So i use them to diagnose and go elsewhere for service.
YOU did a great concise job explaining AND showing could be problems. Just had same symptoms: found acorns and a dead mouse! Used leaf blower through vents to clean everything out, sprayed Fabuloso lavender through vents; now runs & smells great. Subscribed, Thank You!
Great video, not a lot of talk, everything to the point. Well done. My replacement resistor arrived today, will swap it out tomorrow at lunch. Thank you for this video
If you in fact decide you want to do this yourself...her are a few tips. It just took me four hours. Our posters makes it look like a cake walk. My truck is a 1992 Toyota 4x4 extended cab. The three bolts that are holding the fan are not Phillips Heads they are 8mm. The rear bolt/screw is the problem. You can't see it without a mirror, it's next to impossible to get you left hand in there. I have a ratchet that the handle twist, the only tool I could get on the bolt, no room to ratchet. Getting the fan out is tough, getting it back in is even worse. You actually have to squeeze the plastic blades to force it in. The resistor is easy ...two phillips head screws. NOW, the four speed fan switch, I'll take it to a Toyota Dealer. At least they'll be able to replace all the little plastic parts in the panels they break. Lou's Garage won't have them on hand. Hope this helps some of you...good luck.
If I had it to do over again, I would remove the glovebox. This will give you more room and also access to the fan bracket bolts (not the three that hold the fan in), which, by removing, will give you some wiggle room to drop the fan out and replace.
I had a problem with Blower Motor for my 1992 Toyota XCab going out, but also the fan speeds did not all work. I watched a few videos, and decided it MUST be the resistor. Ordered one and replaced it, (only after dropping the glove box, btw.) Fairly simple. Not all that simple to do if you don't drop the Blower motor, btw. Being upside down in the passenger floorboard not so easy. Not sure why you chose not to. Can't visualize much if you don't and certainly not for the viewer. This didn't fix the problem, so I changed the module. No Go. Finally did what I should have done first. I dropped the blower motor and discovered the connectors were both Toast. And yes, that pesky rear screw is tough to reach. I hate to admit I didn't put it back. :)
Ordered new connectors, replaced them, and bought new Blower motor. Wires could barely reach to re-connect. (Toyota should not be so chinchy). Tested motor before re-install, and Nothing. Unplugged the new module and re-installed the original and Voila! Air! I do Not have a Lift. I was 67 years young, a Retired Female RN. I was really excited to get it done. Lasted about 6 months, then got seriously LOUD, then worked intermittently, then not at all. I currently have it in the shops to determine whether there is something shorting it out, and to replace it and hope this will solve the issue. I can do many things through Christ, but I CANNOT MAKE IT THROUGH A SOUTH TEXAS SUMMER w/o AC. BTW, my 32 year old truck has about 150K original miles on it. Gotta Love it! Now, just need a paint job.
Thanks for the blower motor video. My truck is a 89 as well, and the only problem with the blower motor was no 1st or 2nd blower speeds. So now that I know where to go I'll look at the resistor first and hopefully should solve my little problem. Thanks!
+Bill Letourneau sounds like it
I know you should remove the battery cable when doing electrical stuff
But when doing a blower motor resistor only ....do you really need to disconnect the battery?
(like did you in this video)
Follow-up!
I went right to the resistor pack and to my delight pulled out the pack with open elements on the 1st and 2nd blower speed resistors.
Ordered a new one on-line and it works like a champ!
Bill Letourneau Bill, did you disconnect the battery before changing the resistor? Or just change it with the battery as it was?
No, I didn't not disconnect the battery first. Saw no need to due to the ignition in OFF and keys removed. No power was present on the resistor element.
Watching tube videos for many years and you my friend rock! This is the first comment I ever posted. Awesome video and to the point! Great job!
Finding acorns in your blower motor is just nuts!
We would like to see more detail of the under the dash screws and nuts that you removed. Thanks for posting this .
For sure! The rear screw/nut is impossible to get at.
@@HotZTrain Either a chrome 1/4" drive universal socket + extension, or a stubby 1/4" hex or square driver with the appropriate torx bit or socket, will get that rear screw.
Thanks for this! Because of your video, I went into my garage at 1:00AM and found a dead mouse in the blower of my 2002 4Runner. It was removed and reinstalled by 1:12 AM! No more noise!
I’m having same problem, god I hope I can find a dead mouse tomorrow in my Camry, smell really bad when I turn the fan on
I was having problems with my 91 Toyota heater motor not having but one speed on the switch, I did watch your video and you helped me out. Thank you very much it was very good and solved the problem. Fritz
i wasn’t even looking for this but i do need to change out the resistor in my truck and thanks for showing how to do it so confidently!
Acorns, nuts and a broken resistor.
NICE fix! Quick Good Video!
Great to see how easy it was to get out thanks. My two cents, on the Japanese import surf at least, they are torx bits which after spending 20mins trying to get the one next to the fire wall first, realised they are also 8mm socket heads which made it so much quicker and easier. Also agree with other comments, for the sake of a bolt and 5 screws, pulling the glove box assy out makes access much easier.
Great video. Just bought a blower resistor to replace the 30-year-old original--2 of the 3 resistors were blown.
Good vid. I just fixed my BRONCO2 heater while waiting to pick up my kids at school. Kids will be happy to have heat on the way home!
Your audio is much improved on newer videos. I am working my way backwoods.
chasiu75 Oh man... hang on it gets ugly
Some heroes wear mossy oak hats that's all I can say. Thank you sir. Saved me from tearing the switch out of the dash
You can solder the resistor back together instead of replacing it! worked on mine! Or u can replace the resister wire itself, called ntc resister wire on ebay etc comes in different ratings match it up to the profile of you stock setup.
Thanks for this video! The blower shook the dashboard and had limited airflow. 10 minutes to clean out the dirt (mouse nest) and its perfect.
Again thank you 1hour. All done Cleaned out the fan and replace a modular have all four speeds in my fan and no noise. Again thank you
This was so helpful. Thank you. If you ever work on a 1991 toyota long bed pickup, PLEASE make videos of your work. I need new exhaust and dash lights.
1991 Toyota PU-same problems. Allmonstersattack (below) is right. P.I.T.A (difficult). 1.5 hrs to R&R squirrel cage. I have woman hands small enough that medium Costco nitrile gloves fit snug. How a bigger hand would do this is puzzling. The painful part was removing the screw behind the fan motor and then dealing with a clearance problem in removing the fan/blower motor. The key? Each of the 3 identical factory screws fits an 8 mm socket, a slot screw, and a T20 star driver. Go after the this hidden screw first so there is no binding or wobbling, cause this is really a pain. The star drive and a tiny 1/4" drive ratchet with an adapter was what I finally managed to get into the screw head. My small socket extension was too long (need maybe a 1.5" ??). I accessed the screw from the right side of the blower motor and had 2 clicks of the ratchet in that tiny space. I wish I had done the following first: 1. remove the wire that crosses the blower and plugs into fire wall (pinch the fitting and pull)[I am guessing this is the speed controller]. 2. remove the wire that plugs into the fan blower (clip faces you, push the clip while prying the plug down). 3. pull the carpet out of the way, which requires removing the side pane,l and gently pull it off the velcro strip that is stapled to a rubber mat beneath the carpet. 4. reach a bit farther up/right on the rubber mat to find a yellow plastic wing screw; unscrew the mat from the fire wall and push it out of the way (this is NOT easy). 5. NOW remove the 3 screws. The unit drops straight down and immediately binds against the firewall no matter how hard you pull down. It was 90F when I did this work so the plastic blower deformed rather easy, which is required to get it out of/back in the housing (I "strangled" it out). Frightened by a smell of burning grass when I started the fan to check it. Cleared after a minute but real mystery what could have been burning. Good luck.
Thankyou...have had one speed, medium high, my favorite, not working for years...or rather it works for a few seconds before quitting. I will now know what to look for and where and hopefully that fixes it.
To the point and accurate information. Thank you!
Am I the only one who laughed like a 5 year old when you said "removed deez nuts"
Yes you were...lol
You're not alone. Pretty sure I Homer-style "teeheeheeee"d ..
Incredible, exactly what happened with my toyota thank you!
I have a 2008 Saturn Aura. My ac wasn't working on any speed. The control knob is manual. My car requires cutting the blower motor casing for it to come out and then buying a separate blower motor housing kit that GM requires for reinstallation of the new blower motor. So before going through all that trouble this is what I did yesterday. I unplug the blower motor connector. I ran 2 wires from the battery to the blower motor and I heard it turned on. Thank goodness I didn't remove it and didn't need to cut it to do this simple test!!!
Ok then I grab my multimeter and I check for battery voltage on the blower motor connector not the actual motor. I got 12.6v. I also grab my test light and it test good on both the positive and negative terminals. Oh yea I forgot to mention that the first thing I did was to check all the fuses and they were good. Ok then I removed the blower motor resistor and I tested it with my ohmmeter and I check the resistance between terminals A B C and D. There was no open loop between them and according to the specifications I was getting the right ohms reading on each terminal. So the resistor was good. Ok so now I tested everything and I'm braking my head wondering why is still not working. I decided to look at the blower motor connector and one of the terminals was kind of dark and burned up. I plug it back in and I turn on the car and wiggle the connector. The ac kick in and it was blowing but when I let go of the connector it turned off. So there was the problem. It was a bad burn pin in the blower motor connector. I went to the junk yard and I got lucky that there was only 1 Saturn aura in stock and it still had the connector. So the guy cut it out and I got it for $15 dollars. I got home and cut the burned up one and strip the wires and use yellow butt connectors. I plug it back in and it work perfectly!! Hooray I saved so much money. Now I wonder why did the positive terminal of the blower connector burned up in the first place? Can that be an indication that the blower motor might be going bad and drawing to much amperage and causing the terminal to burn up?
Oh by the way I'm the whole process I broke my glove box not knowing how to remove it. Now I need a new one and is freaking expensive!!
Thank you so much. I have exact same issues with my truck. Fan just started doing that yesterday in a snow storm.
Me - "Hey Mr. Mechanic, my heater blower isn't working."
Mechanic - "Lady, that's just nuts."
Me - "It's not crazy. My heater blower srsly isn't working!!!"
Thank you very much for the help! Solved my problems. Also I appreciate the BS video. Simple, direct and just what I needed.
Very helpful! Thanks, I had the same issue on my 87 Toyota pickup.
Did you just say "deez nuts"? Lol
Outstanding video and presentation
I never expected to see a SMA video where Dr. O had nuts left over after completing a repair. Gave it a thumbs up anyway. :)
Thanks you. Mines stopped completely.will go to pull a part and get one out a 4 runner today
Great video. I've got the exact same problem with my '94 pickup and now know exactly where to look and fix.
Great video brother. Just bought and older 06 tunder an it has a vibration in that area and will check it after seeing this video. Thanks 👍
Thanks for the video! My ac fuse keeps blowing so I decided to take a look at the resistor and I found a fried up leaf stuck between the coils. I removed it, cleaned up the coils and plugged back in. AC blowing stronger and quieter. Hopefully this fixes the fuse issues. thanks!
Thank you for helping to resolve my problem in a very clear and helpful video!!
Great info, I’ve got to make this repair this morning.
Excellent just finished explaining this very same problem to my Cuz.
Thanks, I will check the resistor tomorrow. I have the 3 and 4 speeds but not the 1 and 2.
Thank you that was very helpful! I was told I had to remove my entire dashboard
Happy New Years
I've worked on many cars all my life. This is one of the worst jobs I have ever had to do. The fan resistor is no problem. The back screw is almost impossible to take out (and put back). The fan does not just drop out, getting it back is the worst of the job. Good luck. My advice, take it to a Toyota Dealer and pay the price.
It’s a 2 min job. I just did one on my 4Runner.
lol.. "Removed these nuts" awesome.... thanks for this video.. I had same issue on mine but it was rocks... probably from previous owner since it made noise since i bought it.
Good job there buddy nice to watch a pro in action save me a bundle of time sincerely a viewer
Thankyou...I have one speed out of the four out on my 95 4Runner and all I hopefully have to do is replace that resistor. Oh...it works for maybe a minute (when first tried and cold) on that one speed before quitting and only then working on the other three.
thanks for making this video, my t100 has similar issues, will be using this video as reference, thanks again!
Thanks Dr. O!
This was great for the same problem with my 90 Pickup.
Thanks! This will help me since I’m having the same resistor issue.
So who did the camera holding before Eric got his tripod?
Great video ! Thank you! Clear and concise. V Good teaching skills.
Thanks, Eric.
VERY VERY HELPFULL !!
Wow, most helpful video and information, did not know about cleaning the blower and replacing the resistor part. Do you happen to know how debris and animals get in there to leave their stuff? Just curious, thanks
Nailed it, great video!!!!!
Have possible blower motor and or resistor going.
Watched a couple vids here, and u covered both.
thank you.
+James Allison Glad it helped
Extremely helpful, well done!
Keep'em comin' !!!
Hey thanks! Didn't know how many old Yota's there were left out there when I made this but hey if it helped you, perfect! Thanks for watching!
South Main Auto Repair Oh, there's PLENTY of them out here in the West. :)
nice nut video, you didn't seem surprised at all, i was! good job, thanks for teaching
"Pretty simple" my ass! Haha. Did this on my 88 Pickup. Your video was very helpful. Good job making a P.I.T.A. job look easy.
Mine doesn't make any noise but whats the issue if it only works on high but it does blow hot and cold perfectly
Likely the Resistor
Will a bad resistor blow a fuse. I have a 92 previa and the fuse blows when I turn on the blower on high. The blower fuse is shared with the clock, dash lights, dome light and windows.
I have a 1992 Toyota pickup and when i turn it over you can hear its getting power but nothing comes on Idc about my ac i just need to defrost my windshield
Ok a question. There a 3 screws...one has a wider width on the tab...I put mine facing the seat and the harness won't plug in (too short), so where SHOULD it be? Rotated to the left?
Exactly what i needed!
I couldn't get the 3 rd screw ,way back up underneath i could not even see it ..
But the blower motor fan had no junk in it , but it still growls when on the #4 high8fan speed setting
Any thoughts..just got the AC fixed blowing cold .But NOT flowing that much not like it use to
I have a 2002 Toyota 4 runner and my problem is the blower motor will not shut off and keeps on running. I have all the speeds but at high speed it sounds like something is in the fan area. As soon as I start up my 4 runner the fan motor is running. What is the problem with this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Joe
Any suggestions on how to diagnose the problem of it not blowing at all? Tried a new relay and that didn’t do it. Fuses look good. Would you say I need a whole new blower or could it be something else? Thank you!
Thanks, nice job explaining everything!!
I have a 2000 Toyota Tacoma prerunner sr5 and can never find anything with the same year truck what is the best comparison
I got a 96 Tacoma, The problem I'm having is the blower motor will run on hi, then just shut off randomly and back on. Any ideas?
Might be a dumb question. Have an 89 pickup with the coil resistors. Junking the 95 4runner and robbing parts that interchange. I yanked the fan blower and the resistor. It is enclosed in the newer 4 runner. Does it interchange? Thank you
Subscribed, this is a great channel!
+auxmike thanks!
South Main Auto Repair hi hey exelent video but my blower was working then a feew weeks later won't even turn on. what's the problem there is it burn out or some that I have to put a new one thanks
This is great information!!! Thank you. I had no idea it had resistors. If I get 0 power do u think the resistor is dead?
Some close-ups would help.
Otherwise a helpful video...cured my heater without problems. There was a dried mouse in my fan rotor....what a racket.
But how it got in there.....who knows.?
Thanks mate.
Lucky you just had acorns in it. When I got my 05 Tacoma the fan cage went out in six months. Than it done it again on their five or six months after the second time no problems. Cheap fan cage made out of thin plastic.
So this is the exact problem I have on my 89. So any tips on how to get that back screw out? I spent over an hour trying a torx. Then a socket with an extension. Still can't get any tool to stay on the screw to get it out.
Thanks
I have a “05” Highlander. Leaned out a mouse nest. Only high speed on the fan. Need to find the resistor. Any ideas on where it is. Near fan motor?
Great video.
My blower motor has had bad bearings and has been on its way out for awhile. I have a replacement, but today the switch in the dash felt strange and when slid over to max the blower wouldn’t turn on the switch physically can’t go to off any longer.
Any suggestions on what might be the problem? I’ll put the new blower in tomorrow, but any other insight would be appropriated.
Thank you very good video. Will change my car tomorrow as its keeping similar voice :)
Mine be having a squeeling noise but it comes and goes possibly it could be the ac belt or the motor?
Well made video. Thanks for the upload.
My blower motor has lower that normal air output & all speeds work, normal sound.
I am thinking to order a new one from rock auto, but want to make sure it’s not the resistor or the relay.
Any opinions?
Got a 1995 Toyota Tacoma. All blower speeds work save the 3rd one. Changed the resistor and the third speed still doesn't work. Before I go after the motor wanted to check and see if that could be the reason the 3rd speed is not working.
Found a snack for after lunch!😂
Great explanation. Thank you!
This must have been one of your 1 st vid , still sooo funny 😆
What if my A/C and heater don't turn on? I have a 1990 pick up I move the buttons for the A/C or heater and it does nothing. What can I do to trouble shoot my problem please 😭
