  • All types of camping have the same basic essentials, but the three most popular types of camping (backpacking, car camping, and motocamping) have some pretty important distinctions that are worth considering before you decide to head out on your first camping trip or transition from one type of camping to another.
Let's break down car camping vs motocamping vs backpacking and discuss some of the major differences in car camping gear, motocamping gear, and backpacking gear.
In the end, it all comes down to comfort and carrying capacity. Car camping is the most comfortable because you can bring the most camping gear and be prepared for just about any camping situation because you have virtually unlimited space for gear and "just in case" items.
Backpacking is the least convenient in terms of camping gear and comfort, but allows you to get to the most beautiful and secluded places.
Motorcycle camping is perhaps the best of both camping worlds. You get the access to more secluded and beautiful places of backpacking but can add many of the camping gear luxuries of car camping, all while having a ton of fun riding your motorcycle to go camping.

Do you use more car camping or backpacking gear in your moto camping kit?

Definitely more backpacking gear. However, I started as a hiker/backcountry camper so naturally I had a bunch of compact lightweight gear. Comparatively, motocamping is luxurious lol. Two pillows?! Much wow!

Definitely using backpacking gear to keep my moto camping gear as light as possible. By the way, don't forget bikepacking. Bicycles or E-bikes are really great for getting into remote areas without disturbing anyone. Cheers.

Love the wheelbarrow for carrying your firewood on a motorcycle. A bitch to pack but it saves multiple trips from the wood pile.

I backpacked before I bikepacked. I think it's made it easier for me going from more minimalist and less comfortable to more comfortable every year. Feel sorry for people going the other direction even when we end up at the same place.

I agree. Backpacking, bicycle camping, and now motorcycle camping.

Love the motorcycle rides and adventures, but the camping side and those scenes of enjoying the ride are what I love most ❤

You can also combine the types of camping. I love to have a basecamp in an interesting area and do stuff from there - be it on a motorcycle, or on foot. We are two people and bring a pretty luxury tent (one we can stand in), all the stuff you would have with glamping (just a little more compact and smaller) on our motorcycles. Set up at a campground (we live in Germany, so not wild camping there), and explore the area.

The best suggestion for motorcycle campers is LESS is MORE! Too many riders carry too much junk - bulk and weight. EVERY ride will be more enjoyable on a lighter cycle. Spend a little time watching videos of BIKEPACKERS - carrying everything they need on a bicycle (which allows for more gear than backpackers.) I use basically the same packing list for BIKEPACKING and MOTORCYCLE camping. MotorBikePacking is the crossover. "Camp to Ride" tours have the requirement of passing through a town at least once per day (FUEL!) so they can carry very little food and water.

Agree. I would add that the type and amount of camping gear you carry on a moto will also depend on the bike size. If you're doing single track camping on a small/mid-size enduro, definitely follow bicycle camping guidelines. If you're on a bigger adventure bike, you can carry more so you won't need to cut corners on comfort as much. I can bring a french press coffee maker on my GS and, as I get older, my sleeping bag pad has gotten bigger and thicker. Haha.

I've bought a small (Eaglemate) one-wheeled trailer specifically for Camping. I've even attached a Solar Panel to the top of the trailer to run my little electric cooler!

Wait a minute - where did the wheelbarrow come from? What kind of hitch arrangement are using? Are the wheel bearings rated for motorcycle speeds? Does it even have wheel bearings?
