    Still rocking my D7100 in 2024,purchased new in 2013. Think it’s feature set still viable and can accommodate multiple lenses which in today second hard market pricing is very attractive.

      DSLRs peaked in the 2010s tbh. I got my D810 in 2014 and it's still more than enough for anything I want to shoot and will be until it breaks, hopefully not for another decade. Modern cameras have slightly better AF, slightly better DR, little QOL features, but light hasn't changed, older cameras are still going to perform fundamentally the same as they did when they came out.

      Excellent comment/advice. I’ve had a D7000 for years and it serves my needs perfectly well. However, I was offered a D810 with fewer than 3000 actuations, virtually new condition and for an incredibly low price. I’m still trying to find out what’s wrong with it!

    If you take any advice from this angry fella, it should be this. Reality check, unless you are pulling in a full time income from photography, or have tons of cash to blow...you dont need the "professional" equipment. Get LAST YEARS PRO GEAR. Get the gear they are selling for discounts now that they are trading up. They made that gear work and if you practice enough you can too.

    • @AllenFreemanMediaGuru
      @AllenFreemanMediaGuru 7 років тому +6

      Alysuis True. He was right that a pro could use just about any camera and get better results than most amateur photographers. I know any of the full frame cameras are great, but still getting great shots in a APS-C sensor, plus more telephoto range on the full frame lenses, is a bargain.

      Heck, I am a full time professional photographer and the only equipment I EVER buy is last year’s or the year before equipment.
      Sure, some things are better on some of the new equipment but to me they are not worth $3000+ more to get right now.

    Best damned advice ever!
    I am a professional Photographer.
    Nikons I own: D7000, 7100, 7200, 700, 750, 800, 800E, 810, D3, D3s, D3x, D4, and D4s.
    Multiples of most and I own a lot of older bodies...that aren't relevant so they are not listed.
    My preferences are the D7200 (I shoot very quickly and choke the D7100..You wont have that problem)
    Give me a D7000-7200 and a 85 1.8 and I am making Money! At a 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8 and I can shoot anything that needs shooting. I have not directly compared the D7100, but the D7200 destroys my D4 in auto focus (nobody wants to hear this)....Probably my D4s as well....Its that good
    The D7200 gives up a tiny bit of quality at ISO 100-1000 to the D7100...I am not a pixel peeper so I could care less.
    Resolution is not a problem nor is printing billboards.....Despite what the "experts" tell you.
    For me the only FX bodies I am thrilled with are the D810 and my beloved D700's.
    The 700s because ....we have history together!
    The D810 because it makes my 85 1.4 Zeiss Otis, Nikon 200f2, and many other mildly to crazy expensive lenses sing.
    Don't own those lenses? Don't waste your money on a D810!
    Its that simple...Really.
    When ever I see a nooby with an 810 and a kit lens I throw up in my mouth a bit...Its like leaving a Ferrari in reverse and driving around town...Everybody that knows anything knows you are a poser ......Could have had a Dx with some amazing lenses creating and capturing amazing moments....maybe event bought some lights!
    Instead you make shitty flat snapshots...expensive snapshots!
    Trust me on this: A shit lens is shit no matter what.
    Glass matters!
    Light matters!
    The camera body is a fking hammer

      Right on the spot Man! I worked 15 years as photojournalist in newspaper in analog time from
      Fm2,F3,F90,F90x,F5, and then came digital time, and newspaper died due to economical crisis. After years I came back with D70s, then D90 and D7100 but nowadays work only for myself. Portrait, wedding, story,
      Industry photography, - camera is a tool and lenses is a heart. I saw so, so many posers with D810 and lenses with f stop 3.5-5.6- which could be great for studio work, but outside those cheaper lenses doesn't have
      enough quality to bring all details to big sensor of 810. I still have all D lenses 24/2.8,35/2,50/1.4,180/2.8,80-200/2.8, 28-105 (3,5-5,6D), and sigma 15/2.8 which all do the job with DX sensor. Finally someone; - Ken
      and you pointed out importance of the fact that glass stays, and body's sell. I like these channel because Ken pointed out really logically what is important in gear and what is not. Yes I would like try again a beast like D4s,+ 70-200 or 200/2 but only for sport assigment. But few months back I worked with D7100+80-200 covering national Kendo (Japanese swordsmanship competition). So I put 7100 from 24 MP to smaller field of 15MP, and got fast exposure, big enaugh for web, and decent print up to A3 (I believe 16Inches). With lower end D90, 12MP I made 80 by 150 cm, poster for the door. Life size portrait and people did not believed that was done with 12MP. With a today's price of 7100 it is really a flagship for me.Thanks Ken and Smokin07ram

    I have been shooting with my D7100 for about four years. From events to riots it has been a SOLID performer. Yes, the buffer is a drag but you are 100% correct: the number of times I have needed that much buffer in 4 years I can count on one hand.
    I also shoot with my D800. The images from the D7100 are UNQUESTIONABLY on par with the D800. The only differences are technical and meaningless when it comes to showing the images.
    I chose the D7100 over the D700 because I for sure need video and still do. BTW: it also shoots AMAZING video!!
    I am a professional shooter and have ZERO problem reaching for my D7100 for ANYTHING I am shooting.
    Truth be told..I do take it into “high risk” environments due to its low replacement costs vs my more expensive cameras.
    Even in 2020...I’d STILL recommend the D7100 over pretty much everything else!!
    Happy shooting!

      Would you recommend the D7100 over the Sony A6000 mirrorless for getting into weddings/events ? If so why in your opinion
      Thanks

    • @RANDassociatesinc
      @RANDassociatesinc 2 роки тому +1

      @@scottwesterman221 I would strongly suggest you experiment with both the D7100 and the A6000. Why? To see how they operate for you under pressure. Off the top, the A6000 has substantially higher specs but they are also different types of cameras. that said I DO shoot events and have shot ALOT of events with my D7100 and both my clients and I have been consistently pleased with the results. As a practice I deliberately DO NOT shoot weddings. I have not moved to experiment with the A6000 because I have had no justification for it based on my investment in Nikon infrastructure. More recently, I will add, that I have upgraded into shooting with a Leica SL2 and Leica R series lenses.I donthave much of a call for actual autofocus and when I do my Nikon bodies and lenses are more than sufficient to handle those jobs. My practice is to experiment as much as is possible to see how the equipment works in good times and bad times. At your leisure and when you are under pressure. So, good luck in your hunt.

    Thank you. I love my D7100. The features and capabilities of this unit are far beyond my skills at this point, so why “upgrade”? In a world where people are calling their cellphones “cameras” and instagram filters “editing”, I’m a relative pro with my gear. I’m a carpenter by trade and own “overpriced” German-made tools and know that you get what you pay for... but it’s taken me 30 years to get my skills up to par with Festool equipment. Point is, skill outweighs pricy gear for most everything.
    Also... props for acknowledging your Glocks as a defense of plastics. I thought I was the rare Glock/Nikon TOOLS-owner.

    I rented the D810 last weekend for a photo shoot and I did like it a lot, but it just wasn't for me.
    I know you hate the D750, but I wanna bring up some points about it. At least from my point of view. The main reasons I chose it over the D810, or the D610, or whatever other FX camera, are these:
    1. I don't need that many megapixels for most of my work. Plus the RAW files from the D810 are freaking huge. 70+ MB each!!!
    2. I love the U1 and U2 custom settings (I upgraded from a D7000 so I was used to it and loved having them) and I didn't want the D600/610 because of the oil issue like you said
    3. I don't NEED that flip screen but I do find it very convenient for automotive photography. I found myself lying on the ground with the D810, which I don't mind, but I prefer not getting my clothes dirty if I don't have to. Plus the flip screen is really not that fragile at all. As long as you're not throwing the camera around like a maniac.
    4. I can be at a car show for hours at a time in the sun walking around so a lighter camera is a plus.
    Anyway, some people may not agree with me, but if you wanna upgrade to an FX camera, from the D7000 specifically and you loved it, the clear choice to me is the D750. It's pretty much everything I loved about the D7000 with the full frame sensor, better low light capabilities, better wide-angle choices. And without any major issues. I bought the D750 when it first came out and I RARELY had that flare issue. I still sent it in for service though since it was free.

      I agree with most of your videos and points except this one. Camera with flippy screens being 'fragile' is bullshit. I've worked in camera store for the past 7 years (and still am) we sell crap tons of canons and video camcorders and newer nikon flippy screen models. We even have pentax KS2 arriving next month. All this time we have not received a single complain or repair unit for broken flippy screens. Not even ONE out of hundreds of 600D/650D/60D/70D D5300 units sold. After talking to guys from other shops, its the same case. They received more repair units for non functional fixed screen than non functional flippy screen for that matter.

    Im looking to get a refurbed D7100 from either B&H or Adorama. Do you know if they are gray market and will Nikon repair these if something goes wronge. after the 30 or 90 days they give you..

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 років тому

      they are NOT grey market, and they are NIKON factory certified and warranty FROM NIKON!
      after 90 days its, "all you", thats what you need a ($20 a year!) personal articles policy from your insurance agent.
      90 days is all you need anyway, anything can go at any time.
      Thats what youre saving $300 on , $300 more, you can get a new one with a 1 year warr.
      do you NEED that? 99% of the time,NO........there is that 1%, but screw it , ......nobody gambles on 1%
      but thats life!!

    Hey, Ken, this is Robyn... Do you recommend a monopod or a tripod for starters on my Nikon D7100. I've been shooting birds, but the cheapie/lightweight Targus tripod, is probably dangerous. I think the camera is too heavy for it. Suggestions on which way to go? I like the idea of the monopod, but then, the tripod has advantages too for moon shots, etc. And, what brands do you recommend? I searched for a video from you, saw the one from how to use a tripod, but but not a recommendation for a tripod. Did I miss it?

    Mr. Angry, You have good points, but they could be explained in two minutes - not 27 minutes! Why all that talking? Do you just love to hear yoor own voice so much? D7100 may be great for must peoble, yes - but for shooting action and birds it is just useless with that small buffer. My 12mp D300 with a good framerate and buffer is far better for action (lots of pixels dont save you every time) or simply change to Canon 7DII - I am really thinking about doing it in cropchoice. My FX is a 12mp D700 (still a great camera), and it works great with AF-S 24-70 for most work - but I must admit that a D800E could be great for some of my shooting (sometimes I hate to live on a small budget). My point must be that old gear can be great - and it cost nothing compared to newest models.

I use my Nikon d7000 (with many of your recommended FX lenses) but find it lacking during jr. high / high school (night) sports and other indoor activities/events. Has your opinion on the D750 changed in the past year (particularly in light of the substantial decrease in price) as to whether the D750 would be a worthwhile upgrade (from a D7000) for non-professional, enthusiastic (aspiring, learning) photographer? Don't want to chew on 30-40MB photos coming out of D8XX (not shooting poster-sized landscape) every time I shoot a picture.

    Ok. First of all, I need to thank you. I watched this video about 4-5 times when I was planning to buy my next system for professional headshots. I was considering full frame and even other brands. Your video made me ask myself a lot of questions and the answers I got pointed me towards the D7100 at my local shop. As soon as I picked it up I refused to look at anything else. I ended up getting the grip with it (used, mint) and a Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 lens. I am in love with this camera. It has everything I need and nothing I don't. It outperforms the D7200 and many other systems in low ISO settings (which I almost ALWAYS use) and performs exceptionally well at higher ISO too. It's built like a tank, a little heavy with the grip (which I like) and looks absolutely badass. I swear everytime I take this out of my bag, I smell it, then I kiss it, and only then do I start shooting. It is a ritual I have been practicing since I got it and I am hard pressed to think about how I will ever use a different system in the near future. Thank you for helping to open my eyes and see this camera for the amazing piece of engineering it is. I saved a shitload of money (which I invested into glass) and I could NOT BE HAPPIER.

    I got a used and factory cleaned D600 for about $600. The shutter got replaced too. So far i am very happy with the results I get. Sharp, great color and it does well at low iso. After 6.000 shots I have not seen a single oil spot. Maybe I am just lucky, but this body works well for me. But like everyone knows, in photography its not about the gear, its about the photographer. I am still curious, if I should get a D7100 for wildlife and macro.

    Awesome video man!! Classic! I was thinking that getting a 810 would give me better clarity/less noise in low light/astro shots and better prints, would money invested in glass be a better option to bring me closer to where I want my print quality to be with less outlay? Or would the 810 give more of a dramatic improvement than what I can get with glass alone?

    And I couldn't agree more that more people in my position (i.e. been shooting for years, but hardly pros) should appreciate that its our eyes - and not our gear - that holds us back most of the time.

    @DX-Rev 8 років тому +2

    I have a D750 and a D7200... One thing you forget to mention is the AF system on the D750 has the facial 3D tracking and always focuses on the nearest eye (which makes grab shots of people at events like weddings easier), whereas my D7200 does not. The D7200 will just pick the nearest thing and focus like Canon. This is fine if you just use the center focus and recompose, but time is money. And why have a flippy screen? Not just for video! I often take product photos with manual focus lenses and have the camera in an awkward position for looking through the viewfinder... I prefer to flip the screen, use liveview, zoom in and manually focus. I also do real estate and architecture photography, and there is nothing as wide as the FX 14-24/2.8 lens in DX unless I get a junky Sigma 8-16mm (ever millimeter counts on the wide end)... Also I use the flip screen for real estate photos when shooting at low levels on a tripod where I don't want to lay down on the floor or get on my knees to peer through the finder.
    I guess your point of view is based on only portrait photography under controlled conditions or for family grab shots or wildlife (maybe sports). You don't consider little things like the AF 3D facial tracking is useful, or that people use their cameras in awkward positions where the flip screen helps a lot. I guess in theory, I could use the wifi on my D7200 for product photos and real estate... But that is adding another step, adding lag, and wasting time. I only bought the D7200 as a backup to my D750 in case it shits out on me during a job and I have no choice. And I carry it for family photos when I just bring the D7200 and 18-200 in my bag for the day. But in your point of view, I should use the D7200 (or D7100) for everything, even though the 10-24mm has loads of distortion at 10-16mm, and 10 isn't wide enough for tiny interiors, especially when I need to do distortion correction or crop out the distortion.
    I also do portraiture with my D750 and 85/1.4G and 135/2DC, The 3D facial recognition focus always locks on the nearest eye, even at wide open aperture. The D7200 does not. I tried to use the D7200 with these lenses under the same conditions, I always need to use center focus only, focus on the eye and recompose. Sometimes the subject has already moved an inch back or forward and throws off the shot. So again, why is the D7100/D7200 better than the D750? For sports? For birds? Buildings and products are suited for the wider full frame angles and the flip screen in awkward situations. And for portraits and people photos at live events where you don't have time to focus and recompose, the D750 still wins.
    As for image quality? Its the same on my screen and in prints. DX without AA filter vs FX with AA filter, sharpness and details look about the same (provided you're in perfect focus and on a tripod). 24MP on DX is more forgiving for slight focus errors or motion blur, a dense sensor like 24MP on DX is not forgiving at all. People who use the D810 or Canon 5DSR are noticing that more densely packed pixels is making their images less sharp from motion blur or fractional focusing errors.

      if you have a D7000 already, the only thing i would sell it for (if you feel you must upgrade), would be to get a D800e for $1300+
      The LOSS youd incur in selling your D7000 and the GAIN youd get in the D7100 isnt enough to rationally justify same!
      pancake 50mm is a dreamboat skinny girl lens with 0 distortion all the way open.

      200mm F4 is a TANK lens, youll utterly love it, 2 great lenses for the cost of dirt that are worth far far far MORE than they cost.

    Hi angry photographer.. someone once told me that the best way to determine which camera system to buy into, is by determining the lens that you want to use. I am quite keen on getting into landscape photography and am in love with the results that I'm seeing from the Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 lens. Does the DX format and particularly the d7100 have a lens thatv will give me the same focal length at the widest end (14mm) with picture quality that is tack sharp throughout the entire focal range; edge to center?

    Hey wich 3-4 Lens you would advice for a d7100?
    Currently i am seeting a replacement for the Tamron 17-50 2.8 and something wider, was thinking about getting the 15-30 2.8 Tamron and the 24-70 VC Tamron or the Nikon 24-70.
    Also got a 70-200 2.8 Sigma OS ( Not the best but when budget comes i will upgrade to a Nikon one).
    And for Makro the 105mm 2.8 VR is in the Pocket also. i think whith the 15-30 and 24-70 as an addition to the other glass i got i think i can almost shoot everything or?

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  8 років тому

      +Mpingup that tamron is an FX lens and bit of overkill for the D7100. :) nikkor 12-24 or tokina 11-16 :)

      @Mpingup 8 років тому

      +Theoria Apophasis oh and for the Midrange as 24-70 what would you advice there?
      On the more Tele Side i am good just want to improve the Wide Angle Lenses. Also get rid of the 17-50 2.8 Tamron i am not happy with.

    I have a D7100 and like it. but it causes the problem. How can I fix / avoid a flare / ghost images caused from long exposure because the sensor couldn't handle it? Thanks.

    I really enjoy your videos, What can you say about 24-120 f/4 and 24-70 2.8? which one is preferable?

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 років тому

      the 24-120 is a TOTAL PILE OF POO, ...an amazing number agree on this fact, myself included. Its CRAP.
      The 24-70 2.8 (currently i own one) is a dreamboat, however.
      shes very fast AF
      shes RATHER FRAGILE, and easy to break
      shes not EXTREMELY SHARP at any focal.
      shes very expensive.

    • @UAP_888
      @UAP_888 9 років тому

      Theoria Apophasis I saw your video telling 24-70 is sharp at 24 and 50, How do you compare it with the prime 24 and 50? how about at 70? I'm really planning to buy one, and thanks by the way I have learn a lot from your videos.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 років тому +1

      nothing is going to beat a 50mm prime,
      24-70 has a few issues.
      its "very" fragile, and likewise not VERY sharp at 2.8 at ANY range.
      likewise even at F4 across the board, there are plenty more sharp at every focal.
      that being said, its a priceless lens with great value, however its the "worst" of the Nikon Trinity of 14-24 , 24-70 , and 70-200
      all in 2.8

    I understand your point. But in what aspects is the D800e superior to the D610(I was thinking about buying a d610)? I want the best high ISO, night photography performer FX camera in this price range. Please help, don't know what to choose

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis

      the camera you want it coming out middle of this year, a FF version of the D500

    • @TheHitmanAgent
      @TheHitmanAgent 7 років тому

      It would be too expensive for me. Full frame only second hand I can afford. $700-$800 is my limit. Around this price I have found the D600, D610 or the D800e second hand in my country. Or, if you know another model in this price range...

    I own D5100. But I am torn between D7100 & D7200.
    So which is better to upgrade, D7100 or D7200?

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 років тому

      edgenike D7100 is best value, you can get a mint as new used one for $650
      nothing comes closer, and the D7200 doesnt perform as well in low ISO shadow detail, however it does have a larger buffer.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you Angry Photographer for setting me straight with this. Have been thinking about buying a D750 as an upgrade to my D7100 and despite doing a lot of research no one pointed out just how great the D7100 is compared to the mid level FXs and that I don't really need an FX camera for the photography I do. Instead I'm going to spend the money on some of the great lenses you recommend in your other videos.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 років тому +2

      if you want a second BEATER camera, get a D700 FX for $700 !
      the D700 FX is a far superior build camera and tool than the D750 is.
      Ignore the pixel peepers bitching about 12.1MP D700, nonsense, I make perfect 20x30 prints with a D700
      yes yes , glass is important. Glad you didnt waste your money.
      winks.

    Hello Angry, recently dropped my 7100 and I'm using it as an excuse to upgrade, the thing still works despite having a crack in it the size of my arse. Yes I've watched your video but I wonder if for me FX would be best. I like taking night shots, night time landscapes and I've been under the impression the FX sensors will offer less noise. Thoughts? Also, where do you recommend buying cameras used?

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis

      +7dalglish for low light a D750
      on the D7100 patch the crack and use it as a backup camera :)

    Hello Ken. Hope you are great when my message finds you.
    I am going to get my first DSLR and my budget is around 40k INR (~620$). As per your suggestion D7100 is going out of my budget (as it cost around 70k INR ~1100$ for body only).
    In range of my budget I am getting the below deals (all are new products):
    1. D5300 with 18-140mm VR nikkor kit lens - 50k INR (~750$)
    2. D5300 with 18-55mm VR nikkor kit lens - 40k INR (~620$)
    3. D5300 body only - 36k INR (~550$) [If I go with that can I begin with a 35mm 1.8 prime lens (another 10k INR) - will it suffice all my curiosity or as a beginner I should stick to a zoom lens?]
    Looking forward for your suggestions.
    Regards,
    Sam

    In a two week span, I went from a D3200 to a D3300. I then saw the D7100 on sale (body), and I jumped on it after a friend of mine spoke extremely highly about it. I was initially intimidated by the D7100, but I watched your D7100 tips video and it sure helped a brother out. lol
    I am only using the Nikon 35mm 1.8 lens. What would you recommend as second lens? I want something with some distance.
    Thanks.

      +Jose Betancourt for what use and budget? 2 most important lenses are a great wide zoom and intermediate zoom
      and also a few nice prime lenses.
      24-85 VR G Nikkor $220 used minty ebay
      Tokina 11-16
      most awesome cheap useful lens would be the 60mm 2.8 D Nikkor which is also $200+ minty used ebay, see my video on that lens. :)

      ahhh, easy answer, get the FX 70-300 VR lens (ONLY THE VR!!!), not because it has VR, but because its a superior lens.

      Thanks for the fast answer. I have yet to try it out.. I'm going to New Zealand in 2 days time, so I guess it will have it's premier over there. But I just love the D7100. My first lens was the prime 50mm FX 1.8 and I can't say enough good things about that one. But I'm a newbie in photography, so what do I know, right?
      I'll keep an eye on the 70-300 VR. Once again thank you for your advice.
