Love the wisdom and kookiness of the past videos.
Just found your UA-cam videos and I am a huge fan of prime lenses and adapting them. Took your advice and hunted down the 135 f/2.8 AI-s and 50mm f/1.8 AI-s Pancake. Will adapt them to my Sony A7II and Fuji X-T1 and compare them to my vintage Canon, Pentax, and Zeiss lenses. But I still shoot film but haven't shot a Nikon camera for over 35 years when my uncle, who could afford it, lent me his for a month when my first son was born.
What's a really nice film Nikon film body to use with these? Thanks in advance for taking the time to reply.
I just got this lens yesterday for $60. Cutest little thing, sharp at f 2.0 on my D 5500
I miss the off-color language from these videos.
I got my ai-s 50mm F1.8 0.45 version several days ago. Beautiful greenish coating, well-built quality. Love it!
I just picked mine up for $60 in perfect condition for my Fuji x series...it is so sharp..I love it. Also have the e series 28mm 2.8...got that one for $5...have a 41mm and 75mm in my pocket.
This was the first lens I have ever had, I got one together with my Nikon EM. Afterwards, when I got other lenses, I just kept getting frustrated because I just couldn't get the same sharpness and creamy backgrounds. Even today, more than 10 years after, I think this is still my favourite one; it makes a great pair with my Fuji xpro1. Thank you for the video man, It was really nice to watch!
My Nikkor 200mm 2.0 VR2 walked straight out of MC Donalds.
I have a Nikkor 16-85 DX as my 'walkaround' lens and find it a good all rounder apart from distortion at 16mm. This was supposed to be the best quality standard DX zoom a few years ago but I don't seem to be able to find many reviews on UA-cam about it. Have you tried it ? Would like to hear your thoughts. I do like older Nikkors. Recently bought af 35-105mm for £40 and am impressed with the 10 year old
cheapo plastic mounted 28-80 produced in Thailand which I purchased for £20. I shoot with a D200 and D7000, both of which I love and do not feel I need to upgrade at present. I enjoy your videos for knowledgeable info. Carry on the good work !!
Haha you kill me brother. My dad's old 70s film camera had this on it. Slapped it on my 7100 and ohhhwee it's creamy silky smooth.
Paid 20$ for this lens at a thrift store along with an FM body... was missing lens caps but the lens is really clean and sharp. This is my BEST lens.
How is the contrast and saturation of this lens compared to pentacon 50mm. which one would you prefer between the two.
its better on this nikkor, the Pentacon is for (best) 20 feet or less and THEN for its amazing bokeh, not much else.
Nikon E series 50mm/1.8 and Nikkor AI-S 50mm/1.8 are very similar (pancake format) BUT different lenses...
The Nikkor AI-S is multi-coated and supposed to handle flares better...
You keep saying E series but showing the Nikkor lens... Which one do you actually recommend? or is it both/either ?
+Mik S. I'd recommend the old AI-S or even AI version, not this new one. I have both the AI and the new AI-S he shows here and the AI feels amazing compared to the AI-S, the aperture feels sharper and stronger. The aperture on the AI-S feels plasticky and crap. It feels light and plasticky in general really.
I just got an older one with no silver ring for $30 . Is it the same quality?
I joined the 'secret club' today when mine arrived today. Took it out for a test drive this afternoon, and I like it!
Used your secret tip on searching for lens on Ebay. Found a 50mm 1.8 E series in great condition. I got lucky the seller didn't describe the lens correctly and only 3 people were bidding. After all is said I done got this lil gem for 34.00 smackers! 29.00+6.00 for shipping. Thanks Angry Photographer!
LOL You are so funny and entertaining Love watching your videos LOL
Just got my copy of this lens in like new condition in April 2018 for $35 USD. It came with a very fancy rear lens cap called a Nikon EM at that price. The EM looked and worked like new as well.
I have the all black series e pancake, it's the same as the ones with a silver ring right?
yup, its just the earlier version of same.
see here:
www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/50f18E.htm
I bought one by accident for $35 on ebay and love it. The pancake lens compared to the AFS does not flare every time you point in the general direction of the sun.
Could you send me a link of the lens you bought? I'm struggling to find exactly which one it is.
@@dnazeri229 Hello, here is an ebay search link for the manual focus Nikon 50mm pancake. www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1311&_nkw=nikon+50mm+1.8+ais+pancake&_sacat=0

My friend gave me the 50mm E Series 1.8 "pancake" and a 35mm E Series. I can tell they'll take some practiice to get quick with exposure and focus. Any tips for learning how to focus and get the aperture right or does it only come with experience? Shooting on my d3300 I can really tell the 50mm will take a very nice sharp picture when I get it right.
That pancake 50 is a Nikkor, not the Nikon E lens. The Nikkor is multi-coated and has that red/green reflection off the glass. I have had several of both. You can find nice all metal E lenses, avoid the all plastic ones. Both are sharp, but I like the Nikkors on FX since the edges are a bit better.
Based on this video I bought one of these lenses. Aside from the fact that you are right, it is totally awesome, it basically turns off all of the automation on my D3300 and forces me to figure out the relationship between Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO which will ultimately make me a better photographer. I didn't really think about all of this aspect until I put the lens on my camera, but for the longest I have wanted to shoot in manual mode, but with AFS lenses it is hard to NOT utilize the automated features. This lens forces me to do that. Manual mode is not super easy and can be downright frustrating, but I am learning. Thanks for your continued dedication to educating the less experienced and less knowledgeable with these awesome videos. Keep doing what you are doing... please!
+Mark Kielman yes, there is no NON CPU setting on the D3300 for AI lenses.......more expensive nikon DSLR can meter same however
Hahaha,
"zip open your jacket, whip this bitch out" Gold!
Already found one on Craigslist, soon to be mine!
Thanks again!
Years ago I had an FM with the 50 1.4, I gave my son and brother an Nikon EM the e lenses were made for them!!
Hey! greetings from Havana. Thanks for the videos I’ve watching a few and it have been really helpful. Im back into photography after 15 years of no shutting at all.
I’ve got my old Nikon FE2 pancake 50 mm f1.8 on my D3200. It works awesome!!!
Again, thanks for the videos!!
Great stuff man! Will consider this info in future. My go to is 35mm 1.8 DX. Ive never had any complaints about sharpness etc. I drag it with me everywhere. Seeing how tiny this 50 is made me curious. The only thing Im thinking of is shooting in tight spaces... x1.5 ...
1thatdreams see my 4 newest vidoes on DX cameras and WHY you need to really be buying FX glass for your DX cameras.....many good reasons why.
ohh, the 35mm DX 1.8 is great sharp lens, and cheap too!
check at least, out video 1 of the 4 newest videos i just put up.
thanks. :)
I was set to buy my first manual lens for my d7500. A mid 2000s 45mm Nikkor 2.8 P. Cute little lens. I’m so glad I stumbled on this video before placing my order for a $430 lens on eBay. I just bought the 50mm 1.8 lens mentioned in this video for $70 shipped (like new condition). Not bad considering most other sellers got a whiff of the rising popularity of this lens and started selling this lens at around $150, 5 years after this video was made.
have you ever tried the Nikkor 45mm f2.8 pancake (chrome) ? I appreciate this video.
just got it for $45 attached to an em-body. can't wait to get it and check it out, will sell the body :) thanks so much for saving me money!!!
Wow I have this 50mm 1.8 AI , it is attached to my Nikon EM since college days. I haven't paid attention to it because I am nearsighted and depend on auto focus. I will pull it out today. Thanks.
Hi Ken, how does the 50mm series e compare to the 45mm f/2.8p and gn that Nikon made when they released the FM3a? I love the 50mm series e, but enjoy the 42-45mm focal length a bit more.
Out of all your multiple personalities, this one is my favorite. By the way, thanks for the Nikon 70-300 review. Just picked a used one at B&H. Pancake is next.
Looks suspiciously close to my 50mm f1.8 e series which was one of my greatest $40 I have ever spent! The lense come with the Nikon em and works great in my experience for the price that I got it at. Had a lot of fun with it and the focus ring is so smooth that I can even film Cinema on it!
Looks great! Cannot find it anywhere under $65. Any ideas?
You probably wont anymore..I bought mine back in June this year (2016) and paid 129$ for it. worth it though as it's in as new condition and is as good as he says as far as sharpness goes. and if you want a a lens thats built like they should be then look no further either...solid all metal construction that will last a lifetime..love mine, and might get a couple more yet.
Someone say that 50 1.8 E version was only sold in US, and the closest focus is 0.6m while the Japanese pancake version, is 0.45m, so is the Japanese version better?
I bought the 50 pancake on the recommendation here, for my d7100..
It's my cheapest lense, and still probably the best.
No more to say about that, other then that it acts like an 80, thanks to the crop factor.
So thats why I bought a 35mm f2 AI, also recommended here somewhere...
Same dam fantastic quality, 40 years after production.
there is 4 version of the pancake 50mm-
the E series with plastic
the E series with silver ring
the Nikkor pancake that has a closest focus distance of 0.6
the Nikkor pancake Japan Market only that has closest focus distance of 0.45
are they all the same optically??? my one I own is the Nikkor that focuses to 0.45
are they all the same performance?
Jeff Chen hai jef, the 0.45ft focus distance is the sharpest from the other
got a copy on an F3.. frickin love it.. it's fantastic with film too. Love the pancake goodness.. love the zero distortion.. love the buttery smooth focusing.. it's a classic no doubt. :)
That was the kit lense on the nikon EM. Love it, how about the series e 100?
Could you show us a couple of shots you took with that lens? A picture is worth a thousand words
Thanks for fantastic suggestions
You are absolutely right this is a excellent lens. I cant say enough good things about it.
I have the 50mm and the 40mm. the 50 is the pancake lens but the 40 has a slimmer profile. very sharp. I'd love to see your review of them.
One of your funniest videos. It makes sense tough if you live were a lot of rain happens and your out and about this lens makes a perfect choice if you find yourself caught in a cloud burst. I just don't trust those crappy plastic body caps. I haven't seen a used version of tis lens at my local camera shop so I will check out Adorama.
I found one of these yesterday for $67 AUD so I grabbed it of course. Should be here next week. It apparently has a pin head sized "mark" on the rear element (I assume that means a chip). Obviously not ideal but do you think it will be much of a problem?
+Theoria Apophasis I'll leave another comment when I get it and give it a test but I couldn't see any shots of the "mark" on ebay.
Due to your tip I've spotted another one on ebay attached to an old film camera for less than half that price.. I'll probably grab that one as well haha. can't have too many body caps.
Price and autofocus aside, how do you think it compares to the new Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art? The Otus 55mm?
I just got mine from eBay.. ! It's a tough call so far compared to the 1.8 g. Maybe it's my focusing that needs practice but I'm not getting the same color saturation. Especially Browns and skin tons
I also have both lenses. I prefer to use the 1.8G, mainly for the convenience of very fast autofocus, but when I grab my camera (with some other lens on it) and don't feel like toting around a bag, I love that I can put the pancake 50 into my pocket as a choice for a second lens!
found 2 of these Billie 50mm lenses. The first lens which I've mounted on my Canon 20D via adapter says "Nikkor" 50mm f1.8 while the 2nd lens which I've tried mounting had "Nikkor E" in front of the lens. Both had the same physical appearance but I was told by the vendor that the the E model came later and was the cheaper built. Another thing is that the bokeh on the E model rendered lights in boxy circles while it was round on the Non-E model. I bought the Yashica Yashinon-DS 50 mm f 1.7 but later found out that it might be radioactive.
both are Nikkors, and neither one is ALL metal, ive taken them apart , the app. ring is plastic. you mean the crystal AR coating.
Theoria Apophasis hello thank so much for these great videos , could I know if these lenses do well for vide and does it fit well for full frames?
Theoria Apophasis Hey I uses a d90 at the moment, Im switching to a new camera, still debating about the nikon d7100 or the canon 70d, maybe the d600 but i heard theres alot of issues. So out of these 3 im wondering if you could give me any suggestions? thank you
D600 sucks, no way.
easy answer is the D7100
its also THE BEST value nikon, flat out.
i can only find the AI-S pancake for reasonably cheap. or should i wait out for the E series to pop up?
Mr Vibroverb question, do you NEED that thin lens? 50mm F2 is only $60 usually (make sure its NOT an non-AI!!!)
also 50mm F1.8 AI is also about $50+
well, that pancake lens went WAY up because of my video!! Doohh!!!
the best version the one with the serial number that starts with a 2 and focus down to .45 and is all metal. THOSE ones are not the price mentioned in this video. They're around $120+ The 4 series in this video is plastic constructoin i believe and only focuses to .60. Those are the ones that go for cheaper
I have this lens, and can attest that it is fantastic! Bright and sharp. If they made a lens this small that was AF I would have that too.
You're the best, your videos are the best at making me laugh while getting some good insight on budget gear. In the future though, especially for budget lenses, I'd just like to see some sample shots of the lens compared to the others. But your videos are already great, so no need to listen to the suggestion if you don't think it'd be beneficial. Thanks for all the great advice!
+Theoria Apophasis The last thing I need is getting cussed out by the angry photographer. :P
I got a Series E 50mm f/1.8. The lens you have on this camera is a Nikkor pancake 50mm 1.8.
+Donald Wood Is there any difference between the series E and the one he was showing?
@@ZenManji front shot at 2:42 says you need a bit more schooling, or a better optomatrist.
Very sharp!!!!!!
It will auto focus with d7100 right ?
Watching your Bought 28-85mm f3.5-4.5d ...amazing lens thanks man
the 50mm pancake 1.8 wont autofocus on ANY camera .....hehehehhe
its manual
Bought this lens, very satisfied with the results, I also use for astrophotography, thanks for the recommendation!
I have the exact same lens. I got it when buying an old Nikon FE film camera, It came with it. I had no idea at the time, but I've done my best portraits with it on a DX later :D
When I was in middle school a friends dad gave me a Nikon EM to learn photography on. I still have that camera and the 135mm and 50mm that came with it. I didn't know it was such a good lens lol.
I know use it more than my 50Mm 1.8G on my D7000.
Would i be ok to start doing short film making on the nikon D7100? i just keep hearing that video should only be shot with canon. Help me justify my future purchase please!
+TheRockstarx1 video should only be shot on hardcore video gear, not camera gear that ALSO does video.
a 3 chip RGB separation camcorder
it makes me sick and want to puke that everyone wants their camera gear to also be "best at video"
Your video made me curious. Was going for the regular 50mm 1,8 to adapt to my Fuji X-T 1. Now I ordered the pancake. Shorter is shorter - also with an adaptor. We'll see...
Dude, you make me laugh. its quite embarrassing laughing to myself at my desk at work. thank you very much for all the advise you give. I would love to see some of your work.
Still new to all this but would this lens auto focus with the d7100 or will you still have to use manual focus? Awesome viedeos man keep it up! I'm making a list of lenses that you have recommended to save $$$
Theoria Apophasis It will focus, just the camera won't focus it. You have to.
Can you pls make a video on how to perfectly get your subject in focus while manually focusing
I've noticed that some of them don't have the silver ring around the barrel(all black) is there any differences other than the colour? Oh and will this work on a D3200?
it cant meter on the D3200, there are 3 diff version of the pancake, but theyre all the same optically, one is E series, other has the silver ring, without silver is the budget lens, but its the same damn thing
+Theoria Apophasis thanks man! So on the D3200 it's the very definition of "manual" think I'll pick it up, good way to reach myself how to use a manual lens. thanks really appreciate it.
Hi Ken,
I wanted to know if you can recommend the 50 1.8 pancake with 0.45m Close fucus distance over the 0.6m or if it doesn't matter. Cheers mate!
What if i like waffles instead?
You know your fucking lenses man, your channel & advice is priceless.
+spoofer20 fist bump :P
Just got off the road, 980 miles back to the other house, im wore out as hell. Aaaaaack .
omg all your videos are really funny. haha
Thanks for video, dose any defense between Nikon 50mm E series 1.8 silver version and black?
I read in web that silver little heavier and newer! Any more difference?
how does the film lens fit on the nikon i found a 50mm off a film camera and it wont fit on my nikon
I use that lens all of the time on my A7s. It has less internal dust than any of my other newer lenses. I de-clicked the aperture ring and it's so good. I'm considering creating a close focus adapter for it because it's so useful and I just wish I could get closer to things with it.
I snagged one for 60 bucks today! listen to this man! he knows his shit!
You're making me want to get a Nikon just so I can get this lens to put on it!
I’m a bit confused, sometimes it sounds as you are talking about the e series lens, but the one on your d7100 its not since its written «Nikkor» on it.
Good day. I am wondering if you have a recommendation for a 35mm Nikon FX lens.
I have an old M42 Ricoh Rikenon 50mm 1.7 that is just as small as your Nikkor lens and I love the pictures taken with it. I'd really like to see a comparison between those two.
Hello, Im from Mexico, help me please, how can I find this lense?
hey bud i bought NIKKOR-S.C Auto 50mm f/1.4 non-Ai how will this compare ?
YEP. A friend of mine gave me mine when he bailed on Nikon for Canon. It lives on my camera!
I have a Nikon D5000. Im not sure if old lenses work with it or not and was wondering if you could clarify that issue. Love your videos, witty and informative.
Keep up the good work!
What do you think about Nikon 18-70 mm f3.5-4.5 ? Can you make a review? Thanks
hey Ken do you know if there's a difference between the all black version and the silver version you have besides the color?
How come no mention of its bokeh? I find it tricky to manual focus the old lenses on Dslr's. Any tips?
+Theoria Apophasis - Perfect. I will search your channel. Thanks for the fast reply.
what's this lens called, I'm honestly lost...
Just got mine yesterday! Stoked!!!
what is the actual name of this lens? 50mm 1.8 Ai or 50mm 1.8 Ai-s? I see people selling both out there, which one I should go for?
My photography teacher gave me one of these when they were getting rid of all their film cameras. If I switched to digital and got a D7000 would that be a good combination? (I'm using a FM10 now as my go too Nikon SLR)
Hello Sir, which would you recommend, this nikkor 50mm 1.8 series E or the voigtlander 58mm 1.4 if price and size is not an issue? Thanks
Thank you so much! I AM buying this
Where i can buy this lens?
👍. I buy only $40. Happy price happy shoot stuning result.
Ken Rockwell says you have to have the ones that start with a "2" on the serial number...I see your starts with a "4" which I think means it's a "late model manual focus"? Does it make a difference?
Thank you! Thanks for these great videos. Best photography info on UA-cam, hands down!
Hey Ken. Any recommendations as far as settings and other things I need to know to use this lens on a D5300?
@nightsbringer1, in case you're still following this -- your D5300 will only work in Manual (M) mode with this lens. You can only set the aperture with the aperture ring on the lens. Light metering will be a guess, unless you have an hand-held meter. Just bracket your shots at multiple apertures until you get the right exposure. In the viewfinder, I found that the "too close" and "too far" focus indicator arrows don't work, but the "bang on" focus indicator dot DOES work. No idea why.
You're the greatest! When I buy photo stuff, you're the first and last place I go for advice.
