I just sent it to him.... He said, "yeah that's on my to do list." I bet it will make the top of the list the day he locks himself inside!!!! lol....Thanks, Snarky....
Out on the Ranch (with Dr. Lee) tell him he also needs a filter because the roof will collect with dust, poop, and maybe mould or algae if water somehow collects or if the barrels and feeders get direct sunlight.
Matt, If you add a 45 degree brace on each inside corner of your frame it will be double as strong and not interfere with what you are trying to accomplish with the pipes in the bottom. (I have chickens and have done something similar). Also, Chickens will perch for the night on top of the highest thing they can get on top of. Your barrels will make the perfect perch for them. Therefore, lots of waste on top. Make sure the barrels have a lid. You will also be combatting algae. Make sure no light gets into the barrels or any water lines (growing conditions for algae). As for water delivery, the best way to get water to your chickens (and not waste any) is to use chicken nipple drinkers. There are some on ebay right now under "backyardflock" store name and for the amount you have right now, probably 4 or 5 would suffice(although they are a bit high there). Hope this helps you out some.
Those nipples are dumb, get the little cups that have a little toggle stick inside. Some chickens are dumb as hell and won't drink from a nipple, they will drink from a cup of water.
Wow. I believe Matt to be a genuinely positive person. Also, after reading several replies by you to other people's comments, I believe you to be a genuinely miserable, negative person. Why not write out and post your own comments rather than merely taking other people's comments and vomiting your negativity all over them? I don't care whether your reasons are jealousy, envy, lack of emotional maturity, or legitimate hatred (for someone you've likely never met) - the image you've created of yourself here (and elsewhere presumably) is boorish at best. I honestly wish for you to experience some kind of change in your circumstances that will allow you to begin to see all the good around you, but most importantly for you to be able to see the goodness and appreciate it for what it is. Generally, people with the sort of attitude you've displayed throughout this comments section see something good and immediately attempt to tear it apart, rather than add to it in some way. Doing good and being positive is immensely hard work, but worthwhile and rewarding work. Acting like an ass is easy, and doesn't require any particular gift or skill. Should it ever be your desire to do so, I wish you all the luck in the world in the endeavor of living on the glass-half-full side of the equation. Good luck either way, bruh!
Burnt Clutch 🇺🇸Hey that's cool! Question...I have a 98 Saturn SL manual with NO POWER... STEERING. I can't get anyone install!!??? Any Help? thanks FLORIDA 🌴🐊
No matter what video I'm watching, literally the SECOND I get a notification for any one of Matt's videos, be it demo, vet, or off the ranch, instantly straight to it.
Matt, just to let you know you don't have to slope the guttering as much as you had to. It only needs a slight slope or the rain will be too fast and will splash against the end and will all splash out. I would recommend using a marble to seeing if it gets stuck while traveling down the guttering, if it does then slope it a tad more till the marble moves freely. Advice from a Carpenter. Good luck and keep up the great videos, i love them soooo much!!
Matt, I use rainwater collection for my chickens! Here are my tips. :) You've got a good idea, but there should definitely be a removable filter (I use screen you use for house windows) in the pipe somewhere so grit, leaves, etc don't clog the barrels. I recommend sawing off the tops of the barrels so you can check their levels. And add hose water easily, it helps a LOT in droughts. Make sure to cover it with an easily removable lid so water won't evaporate and chickens don't perch on, poop in, or fall in. Also, its 100% fine if you collect runoff from your roof. I do it and my chickens are going on 4 years on roof water.
Matt, I love these videos. Being stuck in Cali with low means, I can't experience the joys that you do. Yeah, okay, I'm kinda living vicariously through your experiences on the ranch. But, I thank you for this.
I'm interested in what happens when the system completely fills up? Will there be an over flow spout that doesn't let the barrels fill 100% up? Also I agree with others, there definitely needs to be a filter in the system, along with a way that doesn't allow the first initial water flow to go into the barrels... This can be accomplished by simply having a 3in PVC tube going vertical, with a valve at the bottom, which is only open a fraction of the way... Once that 3in section if tubing fills up, water moves along towards the rest of the system. And after the rain stops, the the 3in initial flow catcher will steady drain a few drops at a time...
Yup. Carpenter here. That ledger is too weak, and that plywood box beneath is built out of OSB. Not exactly structural stuff. Matt, nail into the studs wherever possible. NAIL! Screws don't have a ton of shear resistance before they break. Although you might be using GRK framing screws or another brand that's rated for shear. In which case, party on Wayne...
Would it make more sense to leave the barrels on the exterior of the hen house and run only the pipe inside the hen house. The chicken are going to jump up and crap all over those barrels.Might make it easier to support on the exterior also.
hey Matt, I had the same idea for my chicken coop but my mom would not let me work on a project like that. I'm going to show my mom your video and see if I can just her convinced that I can do some thing like that too.
Ha! Have you considered how much harder it is going to be to crawl through that hole the next time you lock yourself inside that coup! ...and you will, lock yourself in there. :D
You guys are right lol. For now, just put a small rock or scrap of wood the between the door and the frame. The chickens won't be able to push it open but you will.
Hey Matt, love the channels! Everyone here seems to have commented on filtering the water, but don't forget to build an overflow drain pipe unless you want your coop flooded!
Alex's Adventures, reviews, and gameplay , Matt will have to put in an overflow pipe at the top of the water barrels that drains the water out of the chicken coop.
To slow down the water off the corrugated roof, you can glue something like a penny in the channel 1-2 inches from the edge. Might work without a bigger J flange. you can also put the flange at an angle up and away from the vertical wall to gain distance. You can use some molding (rip some 3/4 inch boards maybe).
Matt, you NEED to attach water filter to piping system, if you dont want to let chickens drink water with dust, other birds poo and some realy nasty shit, that comes with rain down!!!
The whole point of that roof is to protect them from potentially dangerous bacteria and viruses from other species. Viruses such as Avian Flu. You start catching water from that very roof without filtering it and you're defeating the purpose of it...
lol! Do you even country, bro? The whole point of having chickens in a coop is to keep the predators from eating them. Coyotes love them some chicken as a late night snack....
Hey Mat, I just ed wanted to say I love both of your channels. From what I can tell you are a great guy with a great family. Keep it up and God bless you and your family.
You might want to drill the exit holes a little bit above the bottom of the barrel, so you don't get all the garbage that has deposited at the bottom to go down your exit pipes and clog your dribblers.
Probably an idea to maybe add a pond UV filter type gadget to the rain barrel system.... also remember to check inside the rain barrels occasionally as they can get pretty gunky inside, kinda like that pond from the Hi-Point pistol demoranch vid from a couple of weeks ago. Also rain gutters can get pretty gunky inside too.... dust off the roof tends to get washed down into them, resulting in some pretty horrible gunky stuff building up on there (largely a mix of mud & moss)
Love the construction videos. I'm always looking for a project around my house too. The kids love helping and I love teaching them. Keep it up! ~A Dad from Louisiana.
matt, you need to buy filters to put over the gutters so that no residue is caught up in the pipes, which would not allow water flow !!!. for filters even just netting so that no plants and dust can get in.!!!!!!!
Put some timber along the edge of the roof (gutter line) to pack out the gutter. Also consider an automatic stopcock or something to close off the water intake otherwise the tanks will overflow when you have heavy rain. For that short run of gutter, you will need hardly no fall along the gutter length. It will even work with no fall over that short length as water will just flow naturally to the lowest point e.g. the downpipes to the tanks. You only really need a fall on a larger length such as a house elevation.
If you set your flashing to have an 8th inch of fall per foot the water will flow fine down to the 3/4 fitting. It should put you closer to the roof and it will catch more water. So if you set the beginning of the flashing at an inch from the top of the eve, the end of it will only be about an inch to an inch and a half or so from the top of the eve (assuming the structure is only ten to fifteen feet long).
Fresh rain water is good enough, sure, but gathering it in a tank and letting it sit in the heat is asking for nasty microbial growth. It will need some sort of sanitation. Just the dust in the air is enough to give nutrients for microbes to grow with.
Camilla why? You know that roof gutters collect leaves and dirt and insects right? That stuff is hat the chickens will be drinking from it should be filtered also why do you think we're a higher being of a chicken? Because we're not
David V. yes we are, we're intelligent, walking, talking human beings, much higher than chickens. when chickens can do what we do call me and then I'll reconsider your point
No not for the hens all you need to do is use cider vinegar to stop the water turning green. Your get a lot better eggs using rain water for them to drink.
What for i drink rain water and look at medddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd you should also consider some kind of overflow drain for if the barrels over fill and I wouldn't put the exit pipe on the bottom of the barrel because you'll get debris caught in it. do it like an inch or two off the bottom for best results.
I would be more concerned with the chemicals that were in those blue barrels. The chemicals leach into the plastic. That's why you are not supposed to use them for water or food storage. You are supposed to get "Food Grade" barrels for water or food uses.
Lunar Bro well who filters the water for birds in nature....lol had chickens my whole life and they mainly get unfiltered unpruifide rain water for the most part never had a single issue in that aspect
Luka Dudley I see that...there freaking chickens how do people think they got the name fowl dirty old Rian water sure isn't going to hurt something that eats it's own shit and other chickens shit cow shit horse shit ect ect......but I suspose there is some city folks that give their chicken Aquafina or avian water lmao....you know because they need healthy organic chickens
I used to build rainwater tanks then used to design systems for houses in Australia. The easiest formula to work out how much rainwater you will collect from a roof is for every 1mm of rain on every 1 square meter of roof = 1 Litre. So if that chicken coup is 20 square meters and you get a fall of 5mm then you just collected 5X20=100 Litres of water. Hope that helps. We use the meteric system, you can see why this is so much simpler.
*alright* *matt, if* *you* *see* *this* comment, 1. you may want to install a first flush system on the gutters. just look up videos on it, amazon carries kits for cheap! what it does is the first rain water that comes off the roof doesnt get collected but acts as a cleaner for whatever would be on the roofs/ gutters... dirt, pollute, bird crap etc... and it gets rid of it but will then collect the better cleaner water. *yes*, a filter/screen somewhere would be great as well but they will not help with diseases and fine dirt that can come off the roof 2. with your rain barrels support, i believe it will be too much weight for those little footings that you made up, you really should make something up with more surface area being used and support for the middle of the barrel as well! just looking out for your chickens, dont want them to become nuggets pre- maturely!
The gutter on the corrugated roof, if the over hang is to much, just pack the gutter out with a Facia board. Something like 2x1 or 3x1 treated and then fix the gutter onto to that. Could maybe do the same on the sides keeping the facia a 2x1 or 3x1 so its low profile and you still have the trusses feature on show and paint to match.
FYI - Saw a hack somewhere to solve your flashing-in-lieu-of-traditional-gutters problem: glue a penny (or dime/nickel) into the corrugation valleys at the end of the roof pitch to slow the water down right before it shoots off the edge, and it should go right into the makeshift gutter as planned.
Put a hook latch on the outside of your door and a U pin on the outside wall of the shed, that way you open the door wide and hook it on - it will never close until you're ready to do so. Simple!!. I also agree with previous comments about filtering the water for the chickens - I grew up surrounded by them.
Matt, I have to tell you that you are one of my all time favorite UA-camrs and I bet that's true for a lot of your other subscribers as well. Your attitude toward life, willingness to help others, and to treat and save those poor injured animals, your awesome munchkins, and wife, your love of guns and shooting, etc., etc.. Just don't ever change because just like you tell us at the end of your videos, we love you too!
Its not stupid. It actually is illegal in some places because you are not allowed to catch rainwater that would otherwise runoff and feed a stream or irrigation system that's relied upon by your neighbors. Its more of a water rights law to keep people from collecting large quantities.
You should consider getting some of those gutters that allow water tension to flow in but dirt and debris goes right off. It will keep your rain barrels cleaner and things from not getting clogged up.
Cut PVC pipe in half to use as gutters, you can then use normal pipe fittings to connect all of the gutters, plus yo can use normal pipe hangers (those metal things you would find holding pipes up in the basement) to attach the gutters to the roof
One Idea for keeping the water from being stagnant... look into a small windmill that will provide aeration to the tank. Air bubbles will keep the water moving slightly and promotes the growth of healthy bacteria to keep bad bacteria away from the water. A few years of pond building experience has taught me this and it should apply to you
Matt, please tell me your not planning on just setting the barrels on the edges of those small pieces of 2x4. Your dealing with plastic barrels. At 400 lbs each I have a feeling that they are going to burst at the contact points there at the bottom. Steel drums would hold. But I doubt the plastic one will.
you should make an overflow also! just put a pipe in the barrels at the very top and have them feed out of the coop! was gona make a wet chick joke but they are not chicks anymore...
People like you make this world a better place Matt. Treating animals with care and kindness is all they've ever wanted. Something most of them don't get from most people. Keep doing what you do man.
If you have water near the coop you can install a float valve like is used in a swamp cooler to insure the barrel stays full in times of little rainfall.
Hey Matt, It's an great idea but I think you will forget something, make a hole in the top of the two barrels (not in the lit but in the side) and attach a pipe that goes outside. The reason why for example: when your barrels are almost full and it will heavily rain some day it will cause flooding inside the chickens there home (and I don't think they would like it...) the pipes will prevent that. Greetings from Boy from the Netherlands (Boy is my real name) PS: I like your videos
hey matt. be carful with that chicken coop watering system. pvc pipe could become toxic for drinking water. protect your chickens. EVERYBODY LIKE SO HE CAN SEE!!!!!!
Newer PVC pipes are safe for drinking water. Especially if they are marked "NSF". They don't contain the plasticizers that are toxic and can leech into the water like what is found in older PVC pipes.
I got an idea Matt. I was thinking you may need some sort of overflow valve for when you get too much rain so your coup doesn't flood. You are a smart guy so you probably already thought about this.
Matt, Drill a small hole in the coop door frame, then run a wire through it to the latch on the outside. Put a washer on the inside wire end and then if the door closes you can just pull the wire. (looks like someone else mentioned it below, but still ;))
Sigh...after seeing this video, its very important to remember the person that originally said this many eons ago... Don't REINVENT THE WHEEL.Just buy a automatic poltry watering station by a reputable company and be done with it Matt.
He said he was just really looking for a project and working things out yourself and building them from scratch gives a lot more accomplishment than just chucking in something store bought.....
Something you'll want to add to your design: an overflow drain. Just a 1/2 inch pipe coming out a couple inches from the top of one of the barrels to divert excess water out of the coop. Otherwise, too much rains equals water all over the coop floor when too much rain floods your barrels.
i would say that to support 400 pounds of water you might want more than those 4 2x4s holding up the barrel, also i wouldnt put the outlet for the water in the barrels directly on the bottum because then dirt and junk that settles out would plug thing up so id put it like 3" or 4" off the bottum. great idea tho and should turn out nice!
Bigger gutters and catch all the water, just rig up an overflow as the barrels will fill up fast. Awesome setup, that setup would be great in my backyard.
Hey Matt just grab another piece of that flashing for each gutter. Put it on the already installed one's angled up so it grabs the rain that shoots over the original and forces it into the original gutter
So rainwater is safe drinking water for the chickens? And not only is it safe, but would it benifit your chickens if you have a filter in line going to the barrels? And another from the barrels to the nipples?
you should do a clear plexi glass container, do two of them like you plan to but remeasure and build then up and use screws and clear silicone ceilant to water proof it. the reason I say clear plexi glass is because if shit gets caught up on the roof and gets into the water supply it could hurt the chickens. you could add filters but it's just a lot easier to use clear plexis glass and pull the impurities out by hand instead of replacing filters every couple months
Hey, I was thinking and I think you're going to need an overflow prevention system or else you might get a pool in the coop during heavy rain. The chickens might not like that. Maybe just cut a hole a few inches from the top of each one that lets the water drain through some type of piping leading away from the coop.
I built an automatic water for my chickens a couple years ago. It didn't work out because after a couple of weeks the water turned stinky and nasty. The PVC was out of the sun and everything but algae grew like gangbusters and it was just all very gross. Having to take it all apart and clean every couple weeks seemed silly. So, now they get a bucket. Easy to fill and clean.
Sitting in the office, in rainy London (UK) after 40 min of disgustingly humid tube ride, Matt's intro with bright sun, cute animals and pumped up music makes me jelly af >.>
I used a 55 gal drum and horizontal nipples in my coop. They splash a lot of water out and it makes the coop wet and raises the humidity in there. You don't want that. I moved mine out to the run for that reason. Have to use a bird bath heater in it in the winter.
Hey Matt, perhaps before you do anything maybe change the lock on the coup door so you don't get locked in again? Or tie a string that goes thru the door so the lock can be unlocked from the inside.
while working on this make sure to build and overflow mechanic such as piping out from the VERY top of the barrels. otherwise if there is excess it'll spill into your coop
Matt you should run a water line from the barn to the coop underground that connects to a set of chicken nipples. It Would be a constant fresh supply of water. Also have you looked into they way Perdue supplies water? They use oregano infused water to keep them from getting diseases. Wonder if its true? If you're set on the collection system you will want some form of filtration to keep out most debris (twigs, shingle particles, etc), watch for stagnant water that starts to grow algae and a simple over flow system. I'm sure you thought of most of this.
Hey Matt, as a fellow chicken owner who knows all too well the trouble of locking yourself in, if you have a latch that is just like a regular gate latch, drill a hole through the post and slide a string through. then just tie the outside but to the latch so you can pull on it from the inside and unlock it
Use a bpa ceritified barrel or stainless steel barrel. Like others said sometype of a filter to collect leaves and such is a good idea. I do roofing as my job i wish i was around to help.
Don't forget an overflow for the barrels. put a fitting on each barrel just below the top and run a pipe or hose outside and away from the coop. If the barrels overfill in a big storm, they won't flood out the chickens and damage the building.
Matt your water idea is great but gravity is what makes it work and I don't think you have a plan for if you lose gravity
Anthony Parigi didn't event think of that. Thanks for the advice!
Gravity is just a theory
Clyde Connors you think I have never dropped a ball and watched it go into orbit
Clyde Connors gravity is a phenomenon. the theory of relativity explains why and what gravity is.
It's asinine to call something "just" a theory.
jack moore you see the joke? it levitated right past your head because it lost gravity
so fun at parties dude
*Matt, you need to drill a hole in the coop door for a string/wire to open the latch. No more locking yourself in!*
Absolutely Brilliant!!!!! I'll tell him!
Good, I'm glad this didn't get buried in the flood of comments.
Will do....thank you......
Matt,
If you add a 45 degree brace on each inside corner of your frame it will be double as strong and not interfere with what you are trying to accomplish with the pipes in the bottom. (I have chickens and have done something similar). Also, Chickens will perch for the night on top of the highest thing they can get on top of. Your barrels will make the perfect perch for them. Hope this helps you out some.
Keith Shaw this comment needs more likes
Those nipples are dumb, get the little cups that have a little toggle stick inside. Some chickens are dumb as hell and won't drink from a nipple, they will drink from a cup of water.
I respectfully disagree. The cups are more wasteful. I've never had a chicken that wouldnt hit the nipple drinker in 20 years.
My chickens have been using nipple drinkers forever, they'll use them.
Keith
I love how he's constantly trying to make us feel important and he values us as actual people.
complains about video... still watches video
Note Note well okay then?? just trying to us all feel like respected human beings oh yah note note have a good day 😁😁
Don't care about him. He's just a stupid hater who's trying to get attention here.
Met Matt at home depot the other day! Was so awesome!
Bret Huisjen yes I work in the same town he's in! Made my day!
Domino52o! Good for you.
Travis M. isn't it though!!
You gotta be sure the water isn't stagnant, otherwise you can get bacteria growth. Great idea Matt!
That was my concern.
Matt, I use rainwater collection for my chickens! Here are my tips. :)
You've got a good idea, but there should definitely be a removable filter (I use screen you use for house windows) in the pipe somewhere so grit, leaves, etc don't clog the barrels.
This is probably the only UA-camr with a job
Loftysky *only successful youtuber
That's not necessarily a good thing.
Loftysky so UA-cam isn't a job?
Avery F like a job that's not UA-cam
Loftysky your wrong though many artists are you tubers and make a living as selling art which is a job
Matt, I love these videos. Being stuck in Cali with low means, I can't experience the joys that you do. Yeah, okay, I'm kinda living vicariously through your experiences on the ranch. But, I thank you for this.
"It has to hold a little over 800 lbs" "that about what I weight so" 😂

Briann Zegers ikr
Briann Zegers I was looking for this comment
Gianna Volden same here
I'm interested in what happens when the system completely fills up? Will there be an over flow spout that doesn't let the barrels fill 100% up? Also I agree with others, there definitely needs to be a filter in the system, along with a way that doesn't allow the first initial water flow to go into the barrels... This can be accomplished by simply having a 3in PVC tube going vertical, with a valve at the bottom, which is only open a fraction of the way... Once that 3in section if tubing fills up, water moves along towards the rest of the system. And after the rain stops, the the 3in initial flow catcher will steady drain a few drops at a time...
You'll need more support under those barrels Matt..
My thought exactly. He needs to double-up on the 2 x and add at least one more leg, doncha think?
+
Agreed, and the hen house won't flood if the barrels over fill.
Mere would have engineered the hell out of that watering system
Mere is a Civil Engineer. Plumbing is a different area of engineering.
hey Matt, I had the same idea for my chicken coop but my mom would not let me work on a project like that. I'm going to show my mom your video and see if I can just her convinced that I can do some thing like that too.
yea but matt had someone build it for him
Ha! Have you considered how much harder it is going to be to crawl through that hole the next time you lock yourself inside that coup! ...and you will, lock yourself in there. :D
Agreed.....put water on hold and fix the door. A lot more to crawl under now!
deepblueyonderspage you literally just have to tie a string from the lock to the inside. There's nothing to fix.
You guys are right lol. For now, just put a small rock or scrap of wood the between the door and the frame. The chickens won't be able to push it open but you will.
LMFAO
That package at about 5:30 is probs the body panels for the kit car
Bradley Mohr my same thoughts
Looks more like a hard shell roof tent
Didn't he already have them? I thought he pointed to them leaned up against the wall in the first video.
Hey Matt, love the channels! Everyone here seems to have commented on filtering the water, but don't forget to build an overflow drain pipe unless you want your coop flooded!
What if the barrels over fill?
Alex's Adventures, reviews, and gameplay the chickens die probly
The chickens turn into ducks. Dinn't dey teach you nuttin' in skool?
Alex's Adventures, reviews, and gameplay , Matt will have to put in an overflow pipe at the top of the water barrels that drains the water out of the chicken coop.
The chickens build an ark.
Don Nash 😂
To slow down the water off the corrugated roof, you can glue something like a penny in the channel 1-2 inches from the edge. Might work without a bigger J flange. you can also put the flange at an angle up and away from the vertical wall to gain distance. You can use some molding (rip some 3/4 inch boards maybe).
Matt, you NEED to attach water filter to piping system, if you dont want to let chickens drink water with dust, other birds poo and some realy nasty shit, that comes with rain down!!!
Vulpes Dei THEY ARE CHICKENS
The chickens are eating each other's poop in the chicken coop... Poop in the water isn't going to be any different.
Yep!
Also rain gutters can get pretty gunky inside too.... dust off the roof tends to get washed down into them, resulting in some pretty horrible gunky stuff building up on there (largely a mix of mud & moss)
brother just hook up the hose with a cooler float in water tub you'll be golden
Love the construction videos. I'm always looking for a project around my house too. The kids love helping and I love teaching them. Keep it up! ~A Dad from Louisiana.
matt, you need to buy filters to put over the gutters so that no residue is caught up in the pipes, which would not allow water flow !!!. for filters even just netting so that no plants and dust can get in.!!!!!!!
We put poultry watering cups on 55 gal barrels for our chickens. Lasts 2-4 weeks when we go on camping trips.
Why is dozer never sleeping like a normal dog
lance bickle He's unique, don't judge him haha
ABn Wolfzz haha
lance bickle hmmm all the cocaine he finds dropped by smugglers??
Matt, you could fail all day long but you'd still be fun to watch. Thanks for all the vids!
Make sure you put netting/mesh over the barrels so mosquitos cant lay eggs in them.
Matt what if you made a video with Grant Thompson The King Of Random. Its a good idea, and your both my favorite youtubers. Thamks
If you set your flashing to have an 8th inch of fall per foot the water will flow fine down to the 3/4 fitting. It should put you closer to the roof and it will catch more water. So if you set the beginning of the flashing at an inch from the top of the eve, the end of it will only be about an inch to an inch and a half or so from the top of the eve (assuming the structure is only ten to fifteen feet long).
shouldn't you filter the water before they drink it
Matt Fabrizio Rain water is already pure enough, chickens don't need a better quality of water than we do.
Matt Fabrizio Use your brain please
Matt, you have endless energy, you're always busy and on the go and you never seem to be tired.
Doesn't Matt need to purify the water by boiling it or something?
No not for the hens all you need to do is use cider vinegar to stop the water turning green. Your get a lot better eggs using rain water for them to drink.
savemoney no rain water is pure it has no bacteria in it it is purified in the clouds
Animals prefer drinking fresh moving water like from a river etc. because it has more oxygen
What for i drink rain water and look at medddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd savemoney chickens will eat their own poop I dont think they care
you should also consider some kind of overflow drain for if the barrels over fill and I wouldn't put the exit pipe on the bottom of the barrel because you'll get debris caught in it. do it like an inch or two off the bottom for best results.
Are you sure those roofing tiles aren't toxic? You could be slowly poisoning your chickens if the oils or tar on them get into the water.
I would be more concerned with the chemicals that were in those blue barrels. The chemicals leach into the plastic. That's why you are not supposed to use them for water or food storage.
You are supposed to get "Food Grade" barrels for water or food uses.
I learn so much from this channel! Can't wait to see the finished rain water collector and it's connection to give the chickens water.
funny how many people think Matt needs to filter the rain water for the chickens LMAO
The Dude he does. Chickens aren't immune to illness.
Lunar Bro well who filters the water for birds in nature....lol had chickens my whole life and they mainly get unfiltered unpruifide rain water for the most part never had a single issue in that aspect
The Dude They are too stooopid, theres really no point in trying to explain anything to them.
The Dude right I grew up on a ranch and we didn't filter their water and they are fine. The only thing they died from was old age
I don't think it's safe to drink rain water off of composite roofing...
www.enlight-inc.com/blog/?p=14
Was thinking the same :/
In hoc signo vinces their chickens
In hoc signo vinces I agree there's usually chemicals that cause cancer in roofing shingles
Isn't that aluminum? I no nothing about roofing btw
A vet with 3 good channels, a great house, wonderful family, a freaking farm and hoping for success :)
Mate, youre living the dream :D
"Around 800 pounds, which is about what I weigh" - Matt, you may need a doctor...
Theblastingbrit no his muscle is just incredibly dense like the HULK. lmao
*yes*, a filter/screen somewhere would be great as well but they will not help with diseases and fine dirt that can come off the roof
2. with your rain barrels support, i believe it will be too much weight for those little footings that you made up, you really should make something up with more surface area being used and support for the middle of the barrel as well!
just looking out for your chickens, dont want them to become nuggets pre- maturely!
@4:30 body once told me, the world was gonna roll me.
wowkid54 all star by smash mouth
The gutter on the corrugated roof, if the over hang is to much, just pack the gutter out with a Facia board. Something like 2x1 or 3x1 treated and then fix the gutter onto to that. Could maybe do the same on the sides keeping the facia a 2x1 or 3x1 so its low profile and you still have the trusses feature on show and paint to match.
And his channels "Off the ranch" 😂
FYI - Saw a hack somewhere to solve your flashing-in-lieu-of-traditional-gutters problem: glue a penny (or dime/nickel) into the corrugation valleys at the end of the roof pitch to slow the water down right before it shoots off the edge, and it should go right into the makeshift gutter as planned.
I just noticed how much he looks like Chris Pratt
Put a hook latch on the outside of your door and a U pin on the outside wall of the shed, that way you open the door wide and hook it on - it will never close until you're ready to do so. Simple!!. I also agree with previous comments about filtering the water for the chickens - I grew up surrounded by them.
Here before the spam bots
Hate those people
aolerma lol
How do we now ur a advance spam bot or something 😑

Matt, I have to tell you that you are one of my all time favorite UA-camrs and I bet that's true for a lot of your other subscribers as well. Your attitude toward life, willingness to help others, and to treat and save those poor injured animals, your awesome munchkins, and wife, your love of guns and shooting, etc., etc.. Just don't ever change because just like you tell us at the end of your videos, we love you too!
Make sure you check local laws. In Some places it's illegal to collect rain water
alex dunn that's the most stupid thing I have ever heard of
In Texas you have the "right of capture" if it naturally falls on your property, you can collect, store and use it.
Its not stupid. It actually is illegal in some places because you are not allowed to catch rainwater that would otherwise runoff and feed a stream or irrigation system that's relied upon by your neighbors. Its more of a water rights law to keep people from collecting large quantities.
FUCK 'em......falls on my property....it is mine
Almost anything is legal in texas
You should consider getting some of those gutters that allow water tension to flow in but dirt and debris goes right off. It will keep your rain barrels cleaner and things from not getting clogged up.
2:13,No matt it's half full.
But is it full of water? Don't take it out of context again either.
But is it full of water? 100% water nothing else.
It got to half level by being empty, so it's half empty. If somebody had filled it up to half, then it would be half full.
Wut?
Cut PVC pipe in half to use as gutters, you can then use normal pipe fittings to connect all of the gutters, plus yo can use normal pipe hangers (those metal things you would find holding pipes up in the basement) to attach the gutters to the roof
Don't you think you need to filter the water though
It's Just McKenna chickens don't need it since they handle things better then us
the sky is a good filter
Mr Cuttlefish_exe that's a terrible explanation
Bret Huisjen chickens can drink old stagnant water full of disease which we can't handle and they will be fine.(better?)
They've been natually drinking from puddles for thousands of years and are fine, rain water is way cleaner than any lake.
One Idea for keeping the water from being stagnant... look into a small windmill that will provide aeration to the tank. Air bubbles will keep the water moving slightly and promotes the growth of healthy bacteria to keep bad bacteria away from the water. A few years of pond building experience has taught me this and it should apply to you
WAIT, MATT WEIGHS 800LBS? 8:38
Its a joke..
Yeah mhm totally serious
Keep doing what you do man.
chickens are hard... haha
If you have water near the coop you can install a float valve like is used in a swamp cooler to insure the barrel stays full in times of little rainfall.
Your titles and thumbnails 😔make me so worried sometimes
Im No Chef Natasha that's clickbate for ya
Im No Chef Natasha your
sorry for my mistake x
really your getting on her for spelling mistakes
Bruno Gianelli haha, perfect! Omega Bozo deserved this
Hey Matt,
It's an great idea but I think you will forget something,
make a hole in the top of the two barrels (not in the lit but in the side) and attach a pipe that goes outside.
The reason why for example: when your barrels are almost full and it will heavily rain some day it will cause flooding inside the chickens there home (and I don't think they would like it...) the pipes will prevent that.
Greetings from Boy from the Netherlands (Boy is my real name)
PS:
I like your videos
hey matt. be carful with that chicken coop watering system. pvc pipe could become toxic for drinking water. protect your chickens. EVERYBODY LIKE SO HE CAN SEE!!!!!!
Newer PVC pipes are safe for drinking water. Especially if they are marked "NSF". They don't contain the plasticizers that are toxic and can leech into the water like what is found in older PVC pipes.
AidenMaddammaVlogs but if the pipes are marked NSFW , then your chickens shouldn't look at them
Pvc pipes are used for water pipes by water companies.
You do realize that the water pipes in your house are most likely CPVC. (not PVC, sheesh)
No they do not. PVC is not rated for potable water CPVC is.
I got an idea Matt. I was thinking you may need some sort of overflow valve for when you get too much rain so your coup doesn't flood. You are a smart guy so you probably already thought about this.
Posted 9 mins ago, I'm 9 minutes too late.
Matt, Drill a small hole in the coop door frame, then run a wire through it to the latch on the outside. Put a washer on the inside wire end and then if the door closes you can just pull the wire. (looks like someone else mentioned it below, but still ;))
It's my birthday!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Badness Bob thanks man that's really nice of you
on the internet, no one cares if it's your birthday
Bret Huisjen oh okay 😔
Just_A_Trout Happy belated birthday!
I don't understand how Matt can get dislikes. When he's like the best guy ever .
Sigh...after seeing this video, its very important to remember the person that originally said this many eons ago...
Don't REINVENT THE WHEEL.Just buy a automatic poltry watering station by a reputable company and be done with it Matt.
Or look at one and they are so easy to build yourself
well that's no fun
Bret Huisjen Well,if your homemade contraption fails to give your chickens water or floods their living quarters out, thats no fun for the chickens.
He said he was just really looking for a project and working things out yourself and building them from scratch gives a lot more accomplishment than just chucking in something store bought.....
tuiyeahright There's an old saying..."stick to what works".
Something you'll want to add to your design: an overflow drain.
Just a 1/2 inch pipe coming out a couple inches from the top of one of the barrels to divert excess water out of the coop. Otherwise, too much rains equals water all over the coop floor when too much rain floods your barrels.
Dang I'm here early
i would say that to support 400 pounds of water you might want more than those 4 2x4s holding up the barrel, also i wouldnt put the outlet for the water in the barrels directly on the bottum because then dirt and junk that settles out would plug thing up so id put it like 3" or 4" off the bottum. great idea tho and should turn out nice!
Wow I'm early
Hey Matt you need to put gutter guards or thin wire mesh on top of the gutters so the do not get clogged with trash like leafs, sticks and maybe mud.
You need an overflow to divert the extra water back outside if by chance the barrels get full.
Hey, I was thinking and I think you're going to need an overflow prevention system or else you might get a pool in the coop during heavy rain. The chickens might not like that. Maybe just cut a hole a few inches from the top of each one that lets the water drain through some type of piping leading away from the coop.
Your such a huge inspiration man definently the best PERSON on youtube . Love the happy dog and cats too.
Hey Matt don’t forget to add an over flow pipe on ur barrels and some way to clean the water from any dirt.
I swear those were some of the happiest dogs and cats I've seen in a while 😂
Matt you should run a water line from the barn to the coop underground that connects to a set of chicken nipples.
