Buy the leaf guards for gutters they go over the down spout and trap leaves and rocks from clogging the pipes. You'll just have sediment that is tiny about the size the chicken's naturally eat.
For those wondering how Matt's system will fill the barrels, here's a short explanation: BERNOULLI'S EQUATION!!! Long answer: His watering system has two free surfaces of water: 1) Gutters and 2) Barrels As long as there is a difference in elevation (delta_h) between the two free surfaces there exists a hydro-static pressure (P) gradient which will force the water against gravity into the barrels; this is commonly referred to static pressure or head. The barrels will only fill when the water in the piping is filled fully to a level above the outlet of the barrels. This will result in the flow naturally traveling from an area of higher pressure to lower pressure without a pump. The system works off of the principle of Bernoulli's equation (I've already simplified it): p1 + rho*g*h1 = p2 + rho*g*h2 Solving for p1 - p2 (now called del_p) del_p = rho*g*(h2-h1) (I will now call h2-h1 as del_h) del_p = rho*g*del_h Therefore, the pressure difference is a function of fluid density (rho), gravity (g), and the differences in the two points (del_h). Since a pressure difference exists, the fluid will flow from gutter to barrel; the area of high pressure to lower pressure. Good job, Matt!!
Thank you, i was so bugged by the doubts that i seriously considered extending my lunch break and explaining people why it will work. So thank you for spending your time on your comment and saving my time. Back to work lol - - >
+M M No problem! I usually don't waste time on UA-cam comments but I had no choice for multiple reasons: 1) I couldn't allow people to be hating on Matt 2) Hopefully people will learn from it 3) Did I mention people being mean to Matt? 4) I am a mechanical engineer
Screw the water system, the progress of that buggy/car is amazing! Been following you for a while all the way from Australia and we don't have anything as badass as that! Keep up the entertaining work you legend!
Andrew Jardine OffTheRanch the only reason I don't think it will work efficiently is due the the differences in surface area from the pipe system to the bottom of the barrel. The pressures must be equal for the barrels to fill and so yes the pipes will fill but once the barrel starts to fill it will technically be exerting at least 10x more like 20x the force on the system than the water flowing into the pipes. Two easy fixes run the pipes to the top from the bottom because the pressure would be enough to force the water up and the level would would attempt to put the water to the same height as the roof. The only downside is that it will still not work properly in supplying he water to the chickens. The second option is to fill the up first and make a closed system with about 1/10 air in the barrels and then pump the air out so instead of the barrel applying a positive pressure to the system it would be negative meaning the water would be a bit more free to flow. The real easiest solution though is just fill the barrels from the top and feed from the bottom so you don't have to worry about the pressures in the system as a whole.
OffTheRanch if you vent both barrels it will work just like you want it to. All you need is one over flow pipe going out with both barrels tied into it.
It will work. the pipes and barrels act as one closed system, with the outlets at the lowest point. the intakes are all above so will fill the entire system (including the barrels) until all the pipes and barrels are completely full. The system will work. Just leave the lits off the barrels, but then they will overflow first, might want to think about a drainage system for that. But probably wont get anywhere near enough rain for that to be a problem.
Al Gore wants to tax gravity too? Oh yeah, it does not exist. Gravity is really buoyancy and density. Look into the flat earth math for curvature.. It's flat and all we were taught was lies.
I will explain with an example that I think everyone will understand. When you drink from s straw, the liquid that is in the straw returns to the original container THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF THE STRAW. Because they are all part of the same system, gravity and atmosphere balance all of the liquid to the same level within the system. Matt, please be sure to seal your system with check valves of some type to prevent mosquitos from reproducing in your system.
Matt with the holes that you put in the gutters for the water to run down you should put a mesh screen over the holes and glue it down that way big debri won't go in the smaller pipes and clog it
That gutter system is neat. My only concern is having the exposed pipe to the sun. You might want to wrap the pipes to keep the water from being really hot when the chickens use the nipples. Similar to leaving a garden hose in the sun.
Man, I've had a night of memories with my brother and our poppa. Dads health is getting bad, and my brother and i spent over three hours telling stories of our youth. I hope when you and your family are all growed up, y'all have a night like this someday FAR in the future. Thanks for sharing the story of your beautiful family with us, and may your family be as blessed as mine has, come what may. (MOVE OVER, ROVER, MATT IS COMING ON OVER)
Matt, if the chickens don't learn how to use the water nipples, you can always use a laser pointer to teach them quicker, and it's pretty entertaining watching them chase it around.
Hi Matt, I love what you have done with the chicken coop, makes life a little easier. That car, and the paint job, looks awesome. I can't wait for it to be finished. It will look awesome, love it. God Bless, my friend.
That gravity flow system will only work if you do a gun give away. Something like a skeletonized AR or a Barrett will probably make it work pretty well.
Looks like a good system, man! In heavy rain, 3/4 may not be able to keep up with the total water flow, but it will keep flow stable. You will want to keep up with the cleaning though. And if you have any problems with the fill/drain at the bottom of the barrels, give a holler. Remember, 100% silicone is your friend. Just be sure it cures. Source: Master plumber, engineering degree
Dont forget vents on the barrels so they dont get air locked, and be careful with Legionella might be harmful to the chickens, or kids. Im a plumber btw and you did a damn nice job
Blakeley Odom that's exactly what I was thinking 2 minutes into this video. I'm not a plumber and I'm not a veterinarian but I'm pretty sure physics works the same whether I do those things for a living or not.
Need a 9mm? got one Need a 45 ACP? got one Need a 500 mag? got one Need a 5.56? got one Need a .50 cal? got one Need a rivet gun.... dont have one of those
Texan Pride It is not Bernoulli's Principle, that applies to pressure, which would be equal in this system. There are two vessels, the outer pipes and the barrels, which communicate though connecting pipes to stay at an equal level.
For the chicken coop, you may want to add a foam gutter filter than stops leaves and things from going into the gutter from home Depot. They're like ten bucks a piece
Ok now you've done it ! Killer job on the show . My wife and I really enjoy watching the family and yourself ,it awesome . My wife and are also Hunan daughter gear heads . Your Goblin is awesome . My favorite form of stress relief ,you guessed it Gun powder and Gas . Great job and what a wonderful family !
Hey matt. A quick tip: you may have to add a pipe a litle lower than the barrel border, leading to the outside of the chicken coops. This pipe is called "thief pipe" here in Brazil and prevents the water from leaquing out from the top of the barrel. When the water level rises almost to the top of the barrel, it will flow out the barrel throu the "thief pipe" and you will not soak the poor chickens :)
I came here to say something about that, an overflow check is crucial. If the barrels were sealed up it wouldn't be a big deal, but then they would have diminished capacity due to pressurization issues. (gravity-fed systems cannot compress a gas down very well unless they're large)
Bruno Gardi There are a few commercial products here that do the same thing, just at the downspout to the gutter and not the catchment vessel itself. Basically when full a horizontal pipe that connects the container to the downspout fills with water and diverts any extra out the downspout. Honestly its just overcomplicating a simple concept, but the finished product looks much better in my opinion.
Cool video! Really starting to watch off the ranch more often. Side note, I had a black Lab named Dozzer! He was 16 yrs old when he crossed the Rainbow Bridge last year, he was a great friend and companion and I will always miss him, ☮️!
When it started raining, it reminded me of the scenery when I went to visit my ex for Christmas last year. It made my depression worse but, I love these videos. It's cute to see his kids so entertained.
Continue reading one of the greatest ideas ever pitched to you below! Matt you are one hell of a man and Texan! You make me proud to be a Texan. God Bless you and thank you for everything you and your family do. I have a GREAT idea for a video for Demo Ranch. You should team up with the Slow Mo Guys and go back through all the "Homemade Shotgun Shell" videos and capture them all in high FPS. Think about that ..... Example..... thumb tacks fired and captured on high speed at like 20,000 FPS. It would be F#%$ING AWESOME!!!! PLEASE DO IT!!! Everyone that wants to see this please like this!! Thank you for all your hard work and dedication Matt keep up the great work!
I suggest installing a "drip leg" with a removable cap at the system low point, this will give a spot for the sand to fall down out of the flow and allow for draining it out. The principal is the same as that used on gas water heaters and furnaces when they pipe in the gas.
Matt what I did was use a string that goes from the lock in the chicken coop's entrance over the door and to a little place for it so you can pull it whenever you get locked inside and it will open.
It would be amazing if you had car decals with the eagle!!! I bought one of the old stickers and cut it out and stuck it on my side window but it's already peeling since it's not weather proof material I doubt you'll see this but I would totally rock one on my car if you sold them.
According to "communicating vessels" therory his system WILL WORK since his barrel are lower than the roof top! And also chickens will be able to consume all the water in the barrels since the nipple thingis are lower than the bottom of the barrels. The only problem is that a little bit of water will be always stuck in the lowest pipe that is lower than nipples, but it's not much I guess.
rjk Well, what I was thinking, but may be wrong: how will the water flow from the lowest point of the pipe up into the barrels? Water generally don't go up...So am I wrong? lol 🤔
The car looks so great. The eagle makes the body way better because it looked so cool without The body panels as well in my opinion. Awesome toy man you deserve it. I bought a Cobalt SS Supercharged a while ago and it's a pretty fun car. Thanks for the video! -Cody
OnTheBrim Great, now how much is that in USD? Also, factor probably around 5k for shipping, then a 10-15% tax, and since it's then a "sports car" and not a kit, insurance would also be more.
System will work physics say so. My concern is about gutters. Draining pipes are too skinny and if it rains much it can not drain all the water in the gutters. As it gets more and more heavy gutters may be broken.
I used to design and build rainwater tanks and collection for houses. You Might get away with that small pipe but you have to remember as a general rule you need overflow points on the tanks for when they fill up and it's still raining. The rule generally is the number of pipes going in you need the same going out or you run the risk of the tanks overflowing inside your chicken coup. Or alternatively have a larger diameter pipe for the overflow than several pipes going in as the formulas for volume are weird when it comes to pipes. Going from a say 50mm diameter pipe to a 100mm diameter pipe does not just double the amout of water that can go through. It's about 8 times the amount. I really can't remember all the formulas but I also used them to work out flow rates for irrigation pumps and such. It's been 10 years since I was doing that but some good points to remember. Dont forget to put overflow points at the top of your tanks or they will flood you coup
One problem with the chicken coop is the barrels are higher than the nipples but the tubing isn't so the bottom bit of water will sit instead of going to the nipples.
The weight of the water will push water through the system, into the barrels, and the weight of the water in the barrels will push water to the nipples. Water is self leveling.
Water flows downhill...... So long as the water level is higher than any of the piping that it has to flow through to get to the nipples (which it is) the water will always cover the nipples when there is water in the barrels.
Buy the leaf guards for gutters they go over the down spout and trap leaves and rocks from clogging the pipes. You'll just have sediment that is tiny about the size the chicken's naturally eat.
For those wondering how Matt's system will fill the barrels, here's a short explanation:
BERNOULLI'S EQUATION!!!
Long answer:
His watering system has two free surfaces of water: 1) Gutters and 2) Barrels
As long as there is a difference in elevation (delta_h) between the two free surfaces there exists a hydro-static pressure (P) gradient which will force the water against gravity into the barrels; this is commonly referred to static pressure or head.
The barrels will only fill when the water in the piping is filled fully to a level above the outlet of the barrels. This will result in the flow naturally traveling from an area of higher pressure to lower pressure without a pump.
The system works off of the principle of Bernoulli's equation (I've already simplified it):
p1 + rho*g*h1 = p2 + rho*g*h2
Solving for p1 - p2 (now called del_p)
del_p = rho*g*(h2-h1) (I will now call h2-h1 as del_h)
del_p = rho*g*del_h
Therefore, the pressure difference is a function of fluid density (rho), gravity (g), and the differences in the two points (del_h). Since a pressure difference exists, the fluid will flow from gutter to barrel; the area of high pressure to lower pressure.
Good job, Matt!!
Kyle Yeomans THANK YOU!!! Everyone's hating on my system and doubting it. Lol. It will work people, I'll show you soon!!!

Only10re Ever heard about wind carrying stuff? There will be sand, leaves, and other shit building up slowly.
Tiffany great comment.
Or a wire mesh over the pipe.
As a plumbing engineer i can say gravity feed water systems work as water likes to automatically level its self out
Andrew Jardine thanks for the support! Amazing how many people are doubting this way haha. I'll show them!
Andrew Jardine OffTheRanch the only reason I don't think it will work efficiently is due the the differences in surface area from the pipe system to the bottom of the barrel. That's Texas, not commiefornia. They don't have a gravity bill, and it's not illegal to collect rainwater.
its a fucking joke, you guys are idiots
Jeff Beck the earth is not flat. when you fly in a plane can you see the whole world. no.
Jeff Beck if the earth is flat why don't you go down in history and be the first to jump off the edge.

You should add gutter screens/filters that way it prevents any leaves or debris from collecting in the gutters, and potentially clogging your piping.

Matt what I did was use a string that goes from the lock in the chicken coop's entrance over the door and to a little place for it so you can pull it whenever you get locked inside and it will open.
I've been waiting for him to get a double sided latch. After getting locked in the first time you'd think that would be the first thing he replaced.

Hey ppl in the comment section, I don't think there's enough of you telling Matt how his water barrels won't get filled with this system.
aolerma Yea I dont think there are enough people telling him. Maybe we should invite some more people to the party.

thank God I'm not the only one that thinks this😂

According to "communicating vessels" therory his system WILL WORK since his barrel are lower than the roof top! And also chickens will be able to consume all the water in the barrels since the nipple thingis are lower than the bottom of the barrels. "This here is called a chicken watering nipple"
So it's a Chipple...
4:58 who's horse?
The car looks so great. The eagle makes the body way better because it looked so cool without
The body panels as well in my opinion. Awesome toy man you deserve it. I bought a Cobalt SS Supercharged a while ago and it's a pretty fun car. Thanks for the video! -Cody
Yes you should most definitely bring this design back
i love all the people in the comments that think their so smart and saying this wont work its simple engineering
Jarred they're*
*they're...sorry
Better than a bear with AK appendages I guess...
I'm to lazy to make that car so I'll just buy a Ariel atom😂
Your English hurts me internally
Brandon Stumm you realize an atom cost 162k while his goblin only cost 18k fully prebuilt by a shop
but ur a uk person
OnTheBrim Great, now how much is that in USD? Also, factor probably around 5k for shipping, then a 10-15% tax, and since it's then a "sports car" and not a kit, insurance would also be more.
A 86 Vette cart is even cheaper
Been watching for years such a cool dude and a cool dad aswell keep it up dude
Great work Matt! The car looks awesome and Mere is sooo right; DEFINITELY need to run those shirts again in OD green!
I don't understand how the water will fill the barrels.
It's not gonna work like this! He gonna find out soon 🤣
That Guy lol cause water can travel uphill
i was wondering the same thing, he needs to have pass through feed to the barrels instead of bottom-fed
Yeah, I'm thinking about it as well. But I'm interested how it will end up.
Because the gutters are higher than the barrels so this process called gravity will take place
I'm going camping tomorrow
I clicked the video for the car then watch a guy make a chicken water system
I love Dozer so much
Matt, you're very talented , Keep up the great work!
Ya but will your new car stop a 50 cal???????? Next up on demo ranch
Bud D ''how many chickens does it take to stop a 50cal?''
How many chicken eggs does it take to stop a .50 cal????
Lee Turner when you realize your reply has more likes than the comment
I think more than he has in that coupe...But definitely something that should be tested.
You'll need to vent/overflow both barrels. Otherwise the one that isn't vented won't fill.
JEC III lol he exposed the ppl who said it won't work in his recent video
You played yourself
Your completely right... Water will seek it's own level in a closed system...
8:36 ladies
One problem with the chicken coop is the barrels are higher than the nipples but the tubing isn't so the bottom bit of water will sit instead of going to the nipples.
The weight of the water will push water through the system, into the barrels, and the weight of the water in the barrels will push water to the nipples. Water is self leveling.
Water flows downhill...... So long as the water level is higher than any of the piping that it has to flow through to get to the nipples (which it is) the water will always cover the nipples when there is water in the barrels.
Won't there be birdpoop on the roofs that will spead disease to the chickens
Fc Fourie Chickens are tougher than you think
Fc Fourie wtf? chickens shitting on the roof? have you ever even seen chickens?
Haliax he is talking about random wild birds that might crap on the roof and it then go in the chickens water...
Danga steinbacher ok nevermind stupid me, but whatever is in the shit still won't hurt them. they eat bugs and worms all day anyways
I run a broiler chicken farm wild birds can very easily give chickens diseases and it will spread to all of them very quickly
Hey Matt
I think you should add some Gutter Guard to the new gutters to help prevent any debris from clogging the pipes as well :)
Bro you're a genius with the coup and the car is rad!
