    I remember both my sister and myself being allowed to stay off school on a Friday to go to Lord’s Cricket Ground with my parents, to see the legendary West Indies cricket team play against Tony Greig’s England and witness their magical team performances.
    It filled us with so much pride to witness such excellence from Clive Lloyd’s team during a time of everyday racism as a teenager.
    Thank you Micheal Holding for your contribution and for speaking out with such eloquence.

      @@rickywright1264 Then don't ever take any pride in anything you haven't done personally. No pride in defeating the Nazis for example.
      The real problem is that people are quick to take credit for the good things our ancestors did but when there is any shame in what they did it's all "well that wasn't me"
      Also, if after watching this very powerful video you don't think racism isn't still a problem, then I don't know what to say.

      @@rickywright1264 Vegas's comment is spot on. If you're going to be proud of the good your ancestors did for you, or for our society, you need to take equal ownership of the things our ancestors did that was not good. It's not about accepting blame yourself, but it is about accepting that you have been provided with opportunities and benefits due to the actions of your ancestors - including the negative ones - that those with darker skins have missed out on. So all anyone is asking is for all white people to acknowledge that, and try to work with the black community to rectify the wrongs done to them in the past, that are still having an impact today.

I have always had nothing but admiration and respect for Michael Holding, he has always spoken so well and confidently about anything and everything, but especially about inequality and racism, two things that shouldn’t exist in the 21st century. I also loved the way in which Ebony spoke, and for such a recognisable voice in the world of cricket to deliver the vital message that she did in the way that she did it, that is something that I believe cannot be replicated. As a boy, I grew up typically the only Chinese boy in a very white town in Western Australia.
    Perhaps in part because of this, I loved cricket growing up. Maybe I just love the game. Regardless, I have loved cricket ever since, and I will love cricket until the day I die. I remember referencing a cricketer from the 70s as a boy to my 5th grade teacher, who I looked up to immensely.
    "How do you know who Ian Redpath is? You weren't even born when he was playing!" That is true. But I wanted to prove through my knowledge of cricket that I am Australian too. That I have a place in this society. I remember some kids from my primary school telling me about coming back from an Australia vs West Indies match at the WACA, and telling me how some people in the crowd had been making fun of the West Indian players, including referring to them as "monkeys." My dad would tell me about the great West Indian teams of the 70s and I grew up in the era of great West Indian cricketers including Brian Lara, Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh and Phil Simmons. Although I never got to watch him play, I have enjoyed Michael Holding's thoughtful and personable commentary for many years. It is immensely moving and gratifying to hear he and Ebony Rainford-Brent speak out on racism.

      The big race battle for Chinese kids in the US right now is happening in Universities. They are being discriminated against for their often high marks. Because of that Chinese kids (even ones with lower marks) now have to get even higher marks to get into university, purely based on their race....while African American students require FAR less to get into University. Now that's racism. I do agree with you, Michael Holding is an incredible commentator.

    I never, ever understood it and I don't think I am a unobservant or insular person. From 1963 onward I just saw these superb cricketers like Gary Sobers (still the greatest player I have seen), Wes Hall, Lance Gibbs, Rohan Kanhai, then: Holding, Roberts, Garner, Lloyd, Greenidge, Marshall (best fast bowler?), Ambrose, Richards, Walsh, and so on. There is the more recent players--not so all-conquering but great people who also happen to love the game and deserve respect. The point is that all these people were great players and outstanding people at the same time. I love Ebony on the radio especially with 'Daggers'. The ones I have contempt for are those who don't understand or cannot accept that there is only one human race, we are all connected, and that the visual differences are 99% irrelevant.

    Great interview. I think Ebony has it wrong. I think the people in power know exactly how it feels, and are inflicting it. She is too young to know that all these things were said 50 years ago, and 100 years ago etc etc. It is worse now than it was then.

      And this is part of the issue. Racism was created by elite academics not working class. your right they are the ones than know exactly what they are doing and are the root cause. But i wonder why the media always choose black sports personalities to speak on our issues instead of qualified black professionals in the right fields. We don't see white sports men commenting on economics

    Simply awesome! My respect for Mr.Holding has grown many folds after watching this (along with the other video where he chats with Nassir Hussein). It also explains why he had as much success as he did in the cricket field -- his superior intellect. If he can break problems down like he did in these videos, it's not hard to imagine how he could break a batsman's game down to the point where he can pin-point his flaws and attack it relentlessly. leading to the spectacular results that he had on field.

      Well put Hari. I am not much of a Cricket supporter, but have listened to his second video after this one and became more curious to find out more. This lays it bare, his analysis is brilliant, he breaks down what seems to be a complex or even opaque subject and presents it with such simplicity that it's nothing short of brilliant. My hat off to Ebony too, of course, she's human like all of us, and presents her perspective in the best way she could master, under the circumstances. It means she has had to deal with all of this so long by herself and now the floodgates have opened. Thanks to Sky Sports for this opportunity.

      @Alan Braham Black people also get justice, do you think the policeman who killed George Floyd will walk? No he won't. When there is injustice (and there always will be some) we must all stand together, but it is a lie to say there is no justice for crimes against black people. Also, the original comment wasn't offensive at all, he just cares about everyone...no need to try prove him wrong. If you want to go down that road then go look at police brutality stats, they don't back your assumption. If only we could all stand together against police brutality, wouldn't that be great. Instead we are being divided further.

    • @johnbattersby8639
      @johnbattersby8639 4 роки тому +2

      @Alan Braham You're going to have to prove that they don't get justice, you can't just say it cause you feel it. It's ridiculous to say that there is no justice for black people, of course there is. Yes there are cases of racism, of course, there always will be and we must stand against it, but it is not 'systematic' in the West anymore, that's the big lie. There is no actual law that discriminates against races anymore, except for maybe diversity laws, which are based on race, not ability. Sometimes the gap in sentencing comes down to how much money you have for a lawyer, not race. That is something we could work on so that everyone has equal chances in court. Michael Holding's stories from the past are very valid, and they are really not ever nice to hear about, but we are nowhere near there today, we have taken massive strides. Sadly there will always be arseholes...of all races.
