I never saw the REI version of Maranda In The Wild as a REI gear commercial. I guess that is how REI saw it and realized that it wasn't turning into that. Kudos to REI for telling the team that things weren't going the way they hoped and knew that this show could do more and mean more to people than just a commercial.

Kyle, I've been following you for yrs from Vietnam and now back in Australia ( after 27yrs travelling Asia). First time to hear Trail Tales and subscribed. I am also a long term Miranda in the Wild fan along with other outdoor UA-camrs.
While I’m not a youtuber more than very casually with a once in a great while upload of a funny podcast clip or something interesting I caught on a hike, climb, run, or trip out on the water, I can say for sure that content creation definitely IS a full time job. It’s more like two full time jobs. I already have a full time day job in cybersecurity and my outdoors adventures, and I was also doing podcast editing and production and research full time for a while (and I will be again soon). Anyone who thinks that is all fun and games or not a real job is nuts. That sh is hard af. Mad props to you both for doing everything you do!! This was a great episode, Kyle.
Rainer's comments about the people of that village in China reminds me of the ending of the book The Martian when Mark Watney talks about people all over the world coming together to save him. There really are alot of good people in this world.
What an engaging guy, I suppose as a producer he knows how to tell stories, enjoyed the way he explained things, even throwing in a relatively obscure Shakespeare reference. Loved his story about the guy in the tee shirt, That happens when you hike sometimes, though not necessarily like this one you have a "Wait, what a minute"?!? moment. Some things can't always be explained.
This was a great episode. Love the idea of interviewing other UA-camrs. Ending was hilarious and the details given by Rainer on the REI stuff was really cool too. Video > no video.

Kind of one of those questions that if it wasn't true they would immediately answer "no." but if it is true they can play games like this - which is fun, don't mind me - but be just in their decision that you have no need to know. Maybe Ranier's gay, which would fit too, how they can be roommates and don't give me the "non of your business" they're putting the conversation out there.
Way back in the day, in a Maranda in the Wild episode. I recall a video where Miranda was in her converted van and chatting with another woman and mentions her “boyfriend” Rain. It was long before Rainer became a known entity and I didn’t ever hear about “Rain” again until the is new version. Might be Rainer, might be someone else. 🤷🏻♀️😂
The last story that Rainer told, as he was telling it, I was thinking about AdventureArchives mountain hike in Japan where they hiked and scheduled a hostel at each stop, they didn't pitch a tent or eat a trail meal the whole time.
I met a "spirit of the mountain" dude once. I was trail running for a few days, doing 6 hour hikes in 3 hours. My final day was doing a 12-hour hike to the top of a mountain and I'm in good shape so 10 hours. I'm near the top after a 2 hour final ascent steep scramble, it was 30C/85F that day, but at the peak is 10C/50F and wind is 70km/45mph up top. I look back down and some dude is just bounding along in just gym shorts and a t-shirt, does the scramble in only 45mins, gets to the top, takes a panoramic with his phone, says 'Hey man!' and goes off again.
Aasgard Pass is a tough hike! I can't imagine coming down it in the snow without an ice axe or even gloves! It really is one of the most beautiful hikes you could ever do in spite of the perils! Whatever happened to the t-shirt guy? Was that Qaudzilla, perhaps? 🥶I took my twin sister up to Colchuck Lake for her first backpacking experience for our 66th birthday. We made it nearly half way up Aasgard but my sister was concerned we wouldn't make it back to camp before we couldn't see the cairns as she didn't want to come down those rocks in the dark. The story about the Israeli girl who fell brought back memories when I took a flying leap and became airborne down the Wallace Falls trail by dislodging a rock in one of the ubiquitous tree roots along trail. I also did a face plant in the rocks and still had to hike all the way down to the trailhead. At least my husband carried my fanny pack for me. I can't imagine what that poor girl went through in China with a shattered jaw being carried for miles down a dangerous trail. I sure hope she recovered from the ordeal. Did Rainer ever find out what the outcome was?

I just watched this last week then learned about Wim Hof and how he hiked up a massive chunk of Everest in just shorts. I wonder if the guy that Rainer is talking about is the same guy. It totally adds up, there's another video (How I used Wim Hof Method to BEAT Circulation Disorder ( Raynaud's ) | and my Advice for YOU) were someone is talking about going up the rockies with him.
I remember getting into a pronunciation argument with my mom after I figured out what she was originally trying to say. The “Appalachian/appaLAYchian” thing bothers me too as a NYer. People get it in their heads that just because it may be closest the original way of saying that word that it must be the “correct” way. The Appalachians were named after a group of tribes in AL called the Apalachee. If you look up the pronunciation of that word, you’ll find two variations consistent with the two variations of Appalachian. Also, if people have this opinion, I ask them how they say Aluminum. I love your conversation on the pronunciation of words. I'm from Western North Carolina and every other word I pronounce; I pronounce incorrectly and I refuse to change after years of people giving me English lessons. I think it's made me worse.😂😂😂
I grew up in the Tidewater area and we could always tell when someone was new to the area because they pronounced Norfolk, VA, as NOR-FOLK. Most locals pronounced it NAW-F#@K. Doesn't mean one is wrong, it just depends on where you come from.

Lol ok Rainer, from a gal’s perspective, there are def some of us that truly enjoy the challenge of steep, competitive incline. Feel the same way about “earning camp”… + a solid reward (whisky / zesty orange peel)
I’m from north Georgia and I’ve always heard it pronounced Appalayshin and it wasn’t till I moved to Montana and heard a girl from Texas tell me it’s pronounced Appalaachin and I was like… what? 😅😅😅😅 are we talking about the same place? Soooooo 🤷🏻♀️
I find the Appalachian Trail pronunciation disagreements so bizarre. Once on trail, seemed 90% App-uh-lay-shin and 10% App-uh-latch-in. Basically only people from North Carolina said App-uh-latch-in.
Aussie here, I’ve always known that Appalachian is pronounced as Appalayshian. The CH is pronounced as a SH. Maybe from US media, it’s been pronounced as that and now it’s forever known as that.
To anyone who decides to watch this entire podcast to find out if they’re dating: he doesn’t answer the question. 😏 hope that saved some time for people who care only about one of the questions teased at the start.
their channel is basically same as before with REI, i was hoping w/the transition to new channel there'd be more ACTUAL hiking videos, not at all, there's less hiking trip videos & TONS of packing videos...and then they did so many of those, the other day i saw they did an "UNpack with me" video 😒....that's why i unsubscribed
Hi Sandra! Just wanted to offer this perspective - we made videos with REI for 3 years and in that time we made about 20 videos that were about hiking, backpacking or bikepacking trips. In the year and a half since we left we've done I think 25 or 26 hiking or backpacking trip videos out of 52 total videos and 2 livestreams. So we have done quite a few more hiking and backpacking videos independently than when we were with REI in about half the time. It definitely took us some time after we left to really ramp into things on our own though - so you're certainly right that initially there was less! All the videos we've made have been to serve what we view is a need, but of course not all of them are for everybody. Totally valid that the packing videos we made didn't appeal to you! Currently we are very focused on as much content backpacking and hiking as we can possibly make while we have prime weather in the summer and fall! I think 7 of our last 10 videos have been backpacking trip videos and we've got many more on the way. Would love to have you back in the community some day and to see you in the comments of future videos!
I never saw the REI version of Maranda In The Wild as a REI gear commercial. I guess that is how REI saw it and realized that it wasn't turning into that. Took a trip out west and had fun calling it Mt. Rahnier. That lazy Midwest drawl 😂
😂😂
So Rainer's first story at the end of the podcast, that was clearly Tom bombadil, right? Lmao
I also hiked tiger leaping gorge! and there were also an israeli couple lol. my favorite trail story is also from there! gorgeous place
incredible, this was the first time I heard of it!
People in the south also say Appalachian wrong🤣🤣
I’m from north Georgia and I’ve always heard it pronounced Appalayshin and it wasn’t till I moved to Montana and heard a girl from Texas tell me it’s pronounced Appalaachin and I was like… what? 😅😅😅😅 are we talking about the same place? Soooooo 🤷🏻♀️
😂 now that's interesting, I would have thought North Georgia was solid Appa-latch-in territory
It's ok, Rainer, I grew up pronouncing it "pamplets", until someone finally corrected me when I was in my 40s. 🤦
Rainer you are a fabulous story teller!
Aw thank you! Really appreciate that!
Wow, that was an enjoyable interview.
glad you liked it!
Good job with the video! I dont listen to many podcasts but really enjoyed this one.
Try the Colorado places: Buena Vista, Ouray, and Salida specifically.
I find the Appalachian Trail pronunciation disagreements so bizarre. Once on trail, seemed 90% App-uh-lay-shin and 10% App-uh-latch-in. Basically only people from North Carolina said App-uh-latch-in.
facts haha
Great poddy. Love Miranda outside!!!
I figure the locals know how to say where they’re from so I assume that that third “a” being short is the correct pronunciation.
I also say Pamp-let. From WV
You're both wrong. I grew up in Maryland and its pronounced "App-ah-lay-shen". :D
😂😂
The ending was perfect 😂
Glad you're not upset about it 😂
@@trailtalespod I was genuinely on the edge of my seat and then you got me. I cracked up so hard!
2 dudes, 1 5-panel hat, so that's 2.5 panels per dude. god bless.
😂 unfortunately it's not a five panel hat, but I appreciate this comment nonetheless
@@trailtalespod your guest has the sickest hair flow out there too
Nice podcast. 2 thumbs up
thanks for watching!!
Rainer, do you have OCD? As someone who was misdiagnosed for a long time and then finally properly diagnosed, it sounds like you’ve got OCD.
I do not have OCD, no! I do ADHD though.
Aussie here, I’ve always known that Appalachian is pronounced as Appalayshian. The CH is pronounced as a SH.
Maybe from US media, it’s been pronounced as that and now it’s forever known as that.
Did he say, ‘acrosst?’ Dude…
Right?! And he OVER PRONOUNCED the "t" that is NOT in the word! 😂
Wait it’s not pamplet?!? I never knew there was an h in it
The H is silent I will take this to my grave.
@@RainerGolden thx Rainer. It’s an honor for you to have replied to my comment 🫡
You Should interview this awesome guy. . Journey with jeff..lol
I'll check him out!
The video podcast is awesome Kyle. Go Bruins
glad you enjoy it! go B's!
Yes, they were hallucinating
To anyone who decides to watch this entire podcast to find out if they’re dating: he doesn’t answer the question. 😏 hope that saved some time for people who care only about one of the questions teased at the start.
from Louisiana and have always said pamplets 🤯
Kyle thanks for another one
No thank you for watching!
their channel is basically same as before with REI, i was hoping w/the transition to new channel there'd be more ACTUAL hiking videos, not at all, there's less hiking trip videos & TONS of packing videos...and then they did so many of those, the other day i saw they did an "UNpack with me" video 😒....that's why i unsubscribed
Id loved the end of the podcast 😂
😁🍿
If your friend is named Joseph, you call him Josep?
I just want spend hours brushing his hair. I bet it would be so relaxing 😊
The pamphlet story is just one of the many pronunciation debates he and Miranda have. Can I just say, "mauve".
