      Restarting at the beginning: I guess I just wanted the full nobo thru-hike experience. I also really enjoyed the first 275 miles of the trail and thought it would be an easy transition back to trail by re-doing those miles. That way I knew exactly what to expect the first couple weeks on trail. Vlogging probably also played a role. I wanted the vlogs to tell the story from Springer to Katahdin.

    What’s interesting about “influencers” is they are mostly young cute athletic types getting sponsors. Older people over 50 are rarely seen as influencers. At 70 I can hike the same hike and not get nearly as many views. There’s a lot of great older hikers out there, but only a few are recognized.

    • @richardreed6249
      @richardreed6249 9 місяців тому +16

      Totally agree. I would argue that doing it in your 60s and 70s is far more challenging and a greater accomplishment.

      That is true, however, when we were younger we were more interested in watching younger people as well (tv/movies/etc).

      Most people enjoy watching younger people than older people. Obviously not just in the world of hiking.

      Can you share some older people hiking?

    • @HostileTakeover2
      @HostileTakeover2 Місяць тому

      That's an interesting aspect I never thought about. There are several older outdoor vloggers (@TheHikingRev , @SilvasOutdoorAdventures , and @DavidonEarth for example) I follow but the term "influencer" doesn't seem to apply to them. On the other hand, there are several others not-young-but-hard-to-call-older, where it does. I think the distinction is more in why & how they go about making videos and how they use that reach. Maybe it's because the older ones generally aren't trying to make a career out of it so their approach is different.

    I think recording your thoughts on video and eventually putting it together when you're done would be a fantastic momento. In addition, there are so many videos on the Trail...there is no mystery left for the newbie. Quite sad. Put your phone away, enjoy the trail without being in a constant mindset of feeding you own ego.

    I am on the FT now, and gators are everywhere except in the Everglades. They are at Oasis, where you start, but they don't really go into the swamp. When you get to the middle, there is bugs, small fish, and snakes. Even gators think it sucks. When in there separate by 10 minutes. The water is clear you can see the snakes pretty easily. I have not seen a single python.

      The overuse of “like” can bug me, if I notice lol. I’m so used to people using it, I often don’t notice. I have other weird peeves, LIKE “pacifcly” instead of specifically and would much rather hear “like” on repeat vs reading it typed. Being a clinician, openly, honestly, and empathetically communicating with everyone and anyone takes away the noise and allows core messages to come through. Keep going as you are, I think you’re fantastic and apparently so do 300k other people! ♥️♥️♥️

    Getting pumped to pay less rent/ insurance/ gas costs, and be in better shape, around quieter places ♾️. Ty for addressing my fears.
    I’d like to know how to stay warm, get hurt less, have more fun, gracefully, continually, while having kids and all ages involved, instead of just ceo escapists. 🎯 A lot of the people watching are looking for an alternative to “death culture” in general, meaning the “spiritually dead” nightmare “reality” that we see so many “turnt” in. Particularly no fun for animals/ plants/ children/ elderly, connected intuitive spirited sane people. Though great for short term types, “demons” it’s called. “psycho (brain 🧠)-path” as compared to “heart💗-path”. So, an actual foundation for real life that works is what I’m saying. Health as wealth

    You will never see them because they haven’t been seen in decades but Jaguars are native to Texas. So technically it used to be possible to see Puma/Jaguars (no I do not mean mountain lions) on the Lone Star Trail, although that would probably be the furthest north to ever see them. You still see the ocelots rarely. Saw one on side of road last month that ran foul of a vehicle. Nowadays you’re lucky to see a jaguar during one of the rare sightings in New Mexico ever few years.

    I think this one maybe could’ve been a little bit better. Maybe if someone use the word like more often or if there was a little bit more up, talk sprinkled in there. 🙄

    22:05 everyone curates their story. A regular person wants to present themselves in a certain way, they put out a certain vibe to get the kind of attention, respect, or whatever other reaction that they want. For example, a dentist or doctor wears white and acts a certain way, bartender or waiter acts another. Each knows what their customers want and how they want to be served, a person in advertising or public relations even more so. So a social media influence is the _most_ so. If that vibe is “authentic” or “raw” it’s not more or less real than “overly positive” or “strong and does not complain”, or whatever.

    Is the unsettling truth the fact that it’s difficult? That doesn’t seem too unsettling to me… I must have missed the point but I was wondering about hiker vibes about vloggers after reading this title.

    the state of AT vlogging is absolute garbage because the bar is so low. can you walk with a backpack on? do you carry a phone in your pocket that you can occasionally point at your face to record yourself complaining while you’re hiking? congratulations, you’re an AT vlogger.
    so many people go down the AT vlogging rabbit hole and think, I can do that too. i find it obnoxious to see so many people with zero hiking experience and zero video creation experience posting so much derivative AT ‘content’ before they even take a single step on a long distance trail.
    name another activity where people with zero experience create a youtube channel and release multiple videos announcing their plans, showing off their gear, and pretending to be experts while having literally zero experience.
    it is a guilty pleasure of mine to watch aspiring AT vloggers fail miserably when faced with the reality of a thru hike.

      It’s just people sharing their experiences and having fun documenting it, it’s not that deep. Thru hikers aren’t the only people with rights to UA-cam

    Why the praise and attention for Taylor? She hiked the trail and made no actual friends. “Sharing” on UA-cam for the likes and her “celebrity” but couldn’t share a single thing while out on the trail. Everyone hiking is tired and cold and struggling- how about sharing a room or some food. This is narcissistic behavior- you would be better friends to her (and a better podcast) by calling her out. There no excuses for being so selfish.

      Calling someone selfish for not wanting to share a hotel room with people they hardly know is a wild take.
