Found the channel on youtube, but have been listening on Spotify on my weekend training hikes. Testing my new gear, pack weight, get my body ready. I've gotten soft after years doing the corporate hustle. Finally have a full month of vacation time. Tminus 20 days till I hit the entire LT for the 2nd time! Going solo this time and I am pumped!!
I remember when you first mentioned that you were going to make this second channel, but I never really gave it much thought. I really liked this episode! And I really want to watch all the other videos you have on this channel now!
Starting the AT in April and I can confirm I want to puke but also just want to start the trail already, at the same time. Feeling a strange duality of emotions rn lol
Frozen mentioned the shit food as a learning lesson … agree with him. So many hikers eat like crap. It’s understandable because of the nature of the challenge.
I’m hiking the PCT also this year mid March start. I live outside of Burney, I was going to say Old Station through the hat creek rim can be hot and brutal. Watch for afternoon thunderstorms also since the area is so exposed.
I’m on the way back to the car from a 20 mile camp and listening to this podcast. I read a couple of comments that said Kyle is talking too much let frozen talk more or the guest talk more and to me I’ve gotten a pretty equal talking experience from both frozen has asked Kyle a lot of questions and Kyle has responded and, it almost seems like two friends, talking more than just a podcast which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed on the way back through these woods
Thru hiking is the ultimate test of being able to adapt to the twists & turns that happen when you're out there. Frozen, please dont be so much of a purist that you won't adapt by flipping, as needed, to complete as much of the trail as you can! Do what you must to complete the most miles!
On the tents and hammocks: Got a DD Bivvy Hamock which you can use as a hammock but also with two trekking poles can also be converted into a 1 person tent. Mount tarp if needed. About 600g.
Nice episode! Fan of both or your channels. Perfect timng for me as I'm starting the PCT a couple days after him. Your spot on about the mindset of the closures - can see how that would really screw with the mental game!
Fascinating listening to this. I'm moving (back, though many years removed) to Western WA soon and really looking forward to the trails. I've already tagged some PCT segments and am thinking about doing trail angel stuff on days off. Would be wild to see one of these guests and serve them hot food or supplies on a random day 😜
Best sun hoody out there IMO is the Jolly Gear Triple Crown Button Down. I’ve had mine for three years and can’t say enough good things about it. I’ve compared it to the OR Echo, various Patagonia sun shirts, Columbia PFGs, REI Sahara, etc. I even have a dark color Jolly hoody and thought it would lose to lighter colored fabrics for sure, in terms of keeping me cool. Nope! Jolly hoody is durable (looks brand new after over 1000 miles under a loaded pack), I can’t stink it out (OR Echo smells nasty after less than ten miles), it keeps me cool, dries fast, and the Customer Service is first rate. The colors change each year. I liked the green in the original run, and year-2 had some wilder colors. Year-3 (this year) has a nice green so I ordered another one. It turns out the fabric had an issue where the pattern rubbed/washed out with use. So Jolly fixed the issue, and is shipping everyone who received defective shirts (cosmetic issue) new shirts for free, including shipping. Doesn’t want the old shirts back. That’s what I call Customer Service.
Great job! I love the input from you Kyle and your style of engaging with your guests. I also love your humor and realness you bring. I think it quite entertaining when you throw in the occasional f bomb. I feel that critical feedback from some is uncalled for and should be kept to themselves. If you’re specifically asking for ideas for improvement that’s one thing. Easy to listen to, and I appreciate your genuine responses to your guests stories. Thanks for the video!
i saw translescent colored scorpions on trail while night hiking. no rattle snakes, one bobcat or lynx (super cool), lots of lizards. 2022 desert heat was horrible. but night hiking changed everything. there are parts of the desert that I definitely want to hike again during winter. it was hard to hike thru some areas in the heat carrying sooo much water. you are right, harder and harder to hike the entire trail in one season due to fire closures and now due to the sierra snow. Frozen, it was good to see you. I followed you on the AT. Be careful on Baden Powell (trail gets sketchy if there is snow..from the top along the crest, vere to the left- the trail does end up going down on the left side..if there is snow, the right of the crest exposure makes the snow on the right side along the crest, dangerous) and San Jacinto (wind & snow). Watch san jan jon report, carry your micro spikes & your ice ax ....you will see patches of snow along the way in the mountains in the desert... I hosted someone last year who came over from France...he said he never carried more than a liter through the desert, 2023.. love your attitude. enjoy your pct hike. looking forward to following your journey..
I'm worried about water for sure. I'm curious about hazards hypothermia, ticks, poisonous spiders &snakes(scorpions?),mountain lions and Bears. I thru-hiked the AT in 2020.
I'm pretty sure Les Stroud would be proud of your mouse trapping skills 😂 he always likes hearing about how people learn from his shows. I'm going to see him in a small venue concert next month, if I get a chance to talk to him I'll tell him 😊 Best of luck on your PCT adventure Frozen!
A nest of mice fell out of the rafters of a picnic table pavilion on the AT in Maryland, as I was eating my dinner at said picnic table. A nearby hiker proceeded to stomp on all the baby mice as mama escaped. I wasn't sure whether to be happy or traumatized.
Hi Kyle, …just some listener feedback. I hope the “dramatic lead in cliff hanger stop halfway through the sentence” doesn’t become a regular stylistic intro. Another popular UA-camr does this, & though his content is great, I find it very grating. Otherwise loving your channel & stories & success!
If this dude was able to leave his wife and toddler behind to take a 6 month solo vacation, id say he gets to do whatever tf he wants every single day, on trail or not hahaha. And hell yeah im a jealous dad typing this, very butt hurt and envious lol. Love to see the success Kyle. You deserve it bro.

It really is the only month I love it up there. Having grown up there I prefer to visit in July or beginning of August. It’s always a crap shoot though.

I like his way of running things but I wish he would not cuss so much. He’s a smart guy with a great vocabulary so he’s well capable of expressing those words in a more civilized manner. Love his show though. I watch all the time.

Good luck Frozen. Hope you can get through the fires. Game of Thrones, Fire and Ice. 🔥🌊

Great conversation. Frozen, hope you have many, happy trails ahead. You've got this.
The logo change is hilarious. I'm hoping to hike the JMT this year, but definitely not in May.
I’m hiking the JMT this year! NOBO, only way to get a permit, otherwise I’d play the real lottery.

Return to the Sierra during July or August to hike the JMT. It’s a completely different trail for scenery.

There are scorpions out in the desert (and other areas) of California, but the highest chance of encountering them will be from dusk to dawn.

There is a 40k mah battery bank I really like it's big enough to charge everything you would need. Get rechargeable batteries for everything.

6:37 frozen crying and kissing the sign. The kid looking at him like wtf. Kid has no clue what he’s been through the past few months.
Does anyone use lightweight snowshoes in the Sierras? Like for completing that section of the PCT I mean.

Unfortunately for early season PCT thru-hikers, the Sierra's are getting pummeled by snow this weekend - 12 feet or more are possible.
Dang, that sounds like flip flop hiking conditions.

Not a lot of snow this year so far
If you don't hike the entire PCT due to fire closures do you still get a certificate to say you did it?
I'll print you one for $20
