Career vs. Calling: What’s the Difference?
Do you have a career or a calling? What’s the difference? That’s what we’re going to talk about today.
I want to talk today about the difference between a career and a calling because a lot of people are very confused about this. And I hear people say “my calling is to be an artist” or “a musician” or a “doctor.” They are mistaking what could be a hobby, passion, talent, side hustle or career for a calling. And so first I want to highlight some differences between the two. Then give some biblical examples of a calling. Finally I want to provide a clear biblical definition of a calling.
    #1 - Differences between a Career and a Calling
    CAREER VS. CALLING
    CAREER CALLING
    Natural talents Spiritual Gifts
Please your employer Please your God
    CAN do MUST do
    Changes Doesn’t Change
Benefits for this life ONLY Benefits for Eternity
Advance the company Advance the kingdom of God
Fulfillment that does not compare to your career
    #2 - Examples of Careers & Callings
Jesus was a carpenter - Career - Calling was to be the Savior of the world
Paul was a tentmaker - Career - Calling was to be an apostle to the Gentiles
Disciples were fishermen - Career - Calling was to be “fishers of men.”
Matthew was a tax collector - Career - Calling was to be a disciple of Jesus
All of these men used the resources from their careers to support themselves and others. And even though their careers took up a considerable amount of their time they stayed focused and never lost sight of what they knew God had created them to do.
    #3 - What is a calling?
So what exactly is a calling? A calling is not always some mystical thing that God reveals to only a select few people.
Jesus made it very clear that every Christian has the same calling. He said, “Go…make disciples…baptize…teach…” If you are not going, making disciples, baptizing (new Christians) and teaching people how to obey God’s commands then it may be a hobby, a passion, a talent, side gig/hustle but I hesitate to call it a calling.
Anything that an unbeliever can do just as well as a believer can’t be considered a calling. Because if God’s main focus is to advance His kingdom then why would God call you to advance something else?
KEY QUESTION: How does what I do for my calling DIRECTLY IMPACT the advancement of God’s kingdom?
If you can’t answer that question, then I would hesitate to label it as a calling.
This is a very controversial and subjective topic so I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject so please leave them in the comments section, tag your friends and invite them to join in the discussion as well and let’s talk about it. If you are struggling to find your specific purpose/calling I encourage you to head over to my blog where I give 7 questions you can ask yourself to discover your specific purpose. I’ll put the link below.

I believe your calling and career should work together for the kingdom of God. Your career should position in a place to be a giver, tither and lender. Not just to supply our financial needs and wants. This is just what I believe in my heart. And especially if you seek God for your career. 😊

Hey Faith! I remember when I was about your age (only 5 years ago) and had similar worries. I became really distraught over my future and to put it plainly, I forgot about how large a part God plays in that aspect of Christian life. I changed my mind career wise so many times, thinking each one would bring more glory to God than the last. What I've learned though, is that no matter what your profession is, whether it be as a minister in a church setting or a school teacher or a construction worker, there is always abundant opportunity to further the Kingdom of God, all you have to do is ask Him for those opportunities in prayer. I'm 19 now and have since graduated high school. I work at a grocery store and I'm trying to get into welding school. Not really what one would call pursuing a career in ministry. Now maybe in a few years, I'll have a welding job, or maybe the Lord will have led me elsewhere. To me, I could care less because where ever I end up is somewhere where I will be of use to God. The Bible says, "The fields are white to harvest, but the laborers are few." So no matter what path you take, Faith, there will always be good and fulfilling work to do. Also, God won't send you somewhere the leave you high and dry to fend for yourself. He provides for His people. We're His children, and fathers don't abandon their kids. Okay well I'm gonna be praying hard for you and I put at the bottom a couple passages that might give you comfort. If you want to talk some more, you can find me on Facebook, but otherwise, girl, looking forward to meeting on the other side of glory!
      1 cor 10:31, matt 6:26-34

As far as I know, I think my "calling" is encouraging the Body of Christ... And my somewhat "talent," being creative. I can use that. For example; giving a handmade book, full of prayer/Scripture to someone, in hopes that it will speak to them in thier season... Or just having coffee with someone and uplifting them with encouraging advice. Etc... I also want to write/sew Scripture on my dresses, in hopes that unbelievers will read it.

When trying to determine if what you want to pursue is a calling or career; don't allow your age to dictate you answering God's call to ministry (whatever area in ministry it maybe). It does not matter if you are in your 20s, 40s, older or somewhere in between, age is not a factor. Jesus was about 30yrs old when he started and his ministry lasted about 3yrs. Almost everyone God called into ministry had a career doing something else. Remember Jesus said that many are called but few are chosen. Be one of the few, one of the chosen (Matt. 22:14). I encourage you to be committed, be consistent, remain faithful to God as you work in your calling that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ (1Pet. 4:11).

We should acknowledge that a lot of times there is no difference. Someone could use what looks like a mundane career to be spreading light and love to others, and spreading the gospel whenever they can. We can use our calling from God in any career. I don’t really think there’s too much of a difference, it’s just about if people accept their calling from Christ or not. For me personally, I have received a prophetic word from an Acquaintance that God is leading me down my path as an actor and musician to give me a platform to spread his love and light. And just to spread goodness and positivity in general. And to play roles, no matter how difficult or perhaps ungodly the subject matter, in order to serve as an example for people and portray humanity, which will ultimately change lives and bring more love.

Well, I must say this the first time I disagree with you on a subject matter. Maybe you're correct in what you said but I still feel I was called to be a nurse and have been one almost 27 years this year. I truly believe I have the gift of giving /helping others and Love to do so. I have done other things while I have been a nurse for extra income and even wanted and still would like to own by own business but would never stop being a nurse. Yes it is my primary means of supporting myself but I don't do it to please men but God and I'm not trying to advance anyone's company although I know the work I do does that. I'm sorry I don't know where the scripture is located but I do my work unto God and to please Him, not man. Thank you Brother Allen. I always enjoy and learn from your videos and sometimes they are even confirmation on something I've read and or meditated on in the Bible.

I do think it's possible for God to lead us into the career He has planned for us but I agree, our calling may be something different. I went to college and my last semester Jesus revealed Himself to me and lead me to drop out and come home. Fast forward to the present and I am back in school to be a CNA, learn effectively and efficiently and in love with helping others who can't do for themselves. Its a completely selfless career. I plan on going back to further my education in Nursing. I know I am being lead by God because before I would have NEVER done this. I wanted to be a creative writer and had so much doubt, uncertainty, anxiety, ect. Now I'm excited to go to school and learn!!!! I'm more excited, however, to become the woman that God has planned me to become and want to use the gifts He's given me for the edification of the church.

I was called to be a stay at home mom. I read the Bible and/or tell Bible stories to my children every day. We have discussions about Jesus and salvation and eternity. But I feel like I’m failing in so many ways. Sometimes I don’t feel like they are listening or internalizing what I’m telling them. I often feel like I need to contribute more financially to my family. Please pray for me than I can more effectively pour into my children and focus less on the worldly pressures to make money. I hope that as they grow into adults they will look back and remember what I taught them about Jesus.

    • @katieonkst8779
      @katieonkst8779 7 років тому +5

Hey, I'm a teenager too that is struggling with my call. If you are saved that is enough. The Bible says that no amount of works could ever get you to Heaven. So you literally cannot show up empty handed because there is nothing that we, as sinful humans, could offer God anyway. That's why his gift is one of grace because we did nothing to deserve it. Now, on the flip side, your salvation should motivate you on to do good works. If you have a desire, just tell God you'll be there whenever wherever he wants and take advantage of all opportunities. He will give you chances to serve him. God Bless, sister

Your career can be your calling. Everything that you do, do as unto the lord. If your career can not be looked at as a calling. You might need to think about switching to a career that falls in line with your calling.

  • @TrumpetsSHS
    @TrumpetsSHS 4 роки тому +1

So, do you think a calling could be God laying a person on someone’s heart, and letting them know that they will play a strong part in leading that person to Christ?
A few years ago, I started believing that God is real again, but I wasn’t saved yet. Through one of my employees, God told me something about one of my former coworkers which indicated that he wasn’t saved. While I always feel it’s sad to hear that someone isn’t saved when you think they might have been, it really bothered me in this case.
This coworker of mine wasn’t really a friend, just an acquaintance, but I ended up crying myself to sleep for months at the thought that this one specific person isn’t saved, and could go to hell. One night, I prayed to God in desperation, and told Him that I wanted Him to use me to share the Gospel with this coworker, and to use me to bring this person to Christ, so that he would be saved.
As time went on, I was still very scared of the thought that my coworker might not ever get saved, but then one day God told me through someone’s Bible verse post on Facebook that He would make it happen in His timing. That brought me the most joy I’ve ever felt in my life. Every now and then, I stated to feel afraid for my coworkers soul, and I would pray to God about it. And EVERY time, he would tell me to not worry about it, because He already told me it would happen (my coworker would be saved). He told me this through my pastor, through passages in the Bible, through other Christian friends, etc.
My deepest desire is to see this one person be saved (after my desire to know Jesus), and I wondered why I felt this way about this one random person in my life, and not about everyone. Then God answered that question through a few Bible verses that my pastor was preaching about, which basically said “Seek Me and put your trust in Me, and I will give you the deepest desires of your heart, for it is I who gave you those desires.” (This is kind of a combined paraphrase of two different verses).
So I’ve come to the conclusion that God put the desperate need in my heart to see my coworker get saved. He used that as motivation for me to get saved myself, and for me to grow in my faith in Him, because He is going to use me as a major part in this persons path to getting saved by Christ.
So, could this be a calling for me? Am I being called to witness to this person specifically, and keep pursuing this person (with guidance from the Holy Spirit) even of this person rejects my witness to him at first?

In watching your videos this is the first time I have definitely disagreed with you. I think the Lord gives everyone different talents and calls them to walk different paths. I definitely feel that God called me to medicine, as I had prayed deeply for answers when my life was at a significant cross roads, and his answer was unmistakable. There are lots of ways to just "have a career in medicine", it is much harder to see every patient as opportunity to show by example the love and compassion of God. Perhaps I don't understand the differences as you are explaining them. As you listed them it appears at least to me, that no one outside of the ministry would have a calling that was combined with their career. I don't believe that is true. IF you are walking with God, your spiritual path will drive your career. As an artist, doctor, lawyer, or janitor you should be consistently moving forward both spiritually and physically AND you should be a light to the people around you. That is what I believe we are all called to do. It is not a separate "task" from your "day job" but fundamentally and deeply intertwinned.

Floyd Saban career and calling can overlap. My career has me sitting at home not interacting with anyone. My career and calling don't overlap. Maybe you have the gift of mercy and healing and other things that make your career something that you can glorify God with and gives you the opportunity to witness.
Overlap does not mean there is no distinction.

I just listened to the audio sermon on how God can help us deal with our anxiety... And again this topic of career versus calling came up again. I still disagree with brother Parr as well. I think it's difficult for Christians who are not Physicians (or nurses or in the medical field in general) to understand what the profession truly entails on a day-to-day basis... particularly when you are actually in the trenches and dealing with patients in the hospital setting. It's not nearly as glamorous as TV shows make it seem. It can be extremely emotionally draining having to care for people when they are ill, having to deal with families, and being exposed to the Brokenness and dysfunctionality that patients bring with then to the hospital ... The mission field in medicine is VAST. Someone who does not know Jesus won't look at it that way, but somebody who does will see every opportunity to interact with a patient and or a patient family member as an opportunity to be a light whichever way the Lord moves that person. Obviously everybody cannot be called into full-time Ministry in the formal sense of the word, but all of us as Believers and followers of Christ are called to be missionaries in our respective spheres of influence. I believe wholeheartedly that one can be called into a certain career. Granted, in Scripture, calling in the literal sense of the word and in just about every example that I have seen in the OT and NT involves God appearing to somebody seemingly out of nowhere, and saying, listen this is what I want you to do for me ... And it typically involved him equipping seemingly ordinary people with extraordinary abilities, such as gift of Prophecy and dream interpretation, to Proclaim Prophecies of warning to God's people and to the authorities of the time so that they would repent from their idolatry and Wicked Ways...and in the NT, Jesus called men who had professions outside of the ministry, i e fisherman, into full-time Ministry. I don't know of any examples in the Bible in which God appeared to somebody and called them to go into a profession that was not full-time Ministry. That is, I don't see any examples of God calling somebody to be a physician or a seamstress or a business person or a lawyer or whatever. But, on the same token Luke apparently was a physician, but he was not called by Jesus into full-time ministry as his 12 disciples were, and yet the Lord chose him to author a whole book of the New Testament.....#justsayin

I definitely agree with you here; I disagreed with his definition and the points he made. A lot of people choose a career because it is what they feel called to do and not because of their own desires so as someone was before maybe there is a little overlap and it isn’t so black and white

Brother Allen, I love this video. This an area that i struggle with. I've been a musician for going on 27 year's, and it was a prophesied to me to write music for the Lord. I know this is a god given gift because it came naturally to me. But for some reason when I play songs I can only play the intro of the songs and can't play it entirely unless I'm listening to it.i also struggle with righting music. How do I change these things.

You're doing a great work here bro, I'm glad to have come across you.I pray continued wisdom and favor be extended to you.
My thoughts on this topic of Career vs Calling is once you are charging for your service it cannot be considered a ministry calling because the gospel is free. If there is a fee for you to minister at my church, then I am sorry you are not a full time minister, you are a full time businessman

So if Im a doctor, I cant be a christian? I want to become a psychiatrist and to talk to people, help them, give them advices (even from a christian perspective), and try to cure their mental problems or if I cant, I will try to reduce their pain. But is this a career or should I become a preacher? In our church we dont have pastors because of my religion (we have priests). I can talk to people really good, as a psychologist, and almost every time when Im with my friends or someone, even a stranger that I just met, I tell them about God and the gospel. I cant make people or my friends to accept Him that easy. For example I have a friend who has some kind of depression and I told him about God and not to be like that, because he has some very creepy ideas of izolation and other things which I dont really want to say. I tried to help him, and prayed for him, but I think that this need more time. Anyway, my question is: Can I become a doctor and still be a christian, If I think that I will help people this way. By helping others, I make something good and I serve God this way? Also, Im planning to write a novel which will put God first and it will show His Grace and love. So a christian needs to be only a preacher or a pastor or a misionary or someone like that?

What about a desire for a particular career you feel God does not want you to do? Is it because it doesn’t line up with your calling or purpose. I’m into the entertainment business . I have had this desire since a child but it hasn’t happened for me. I’m wondering am I pursuing the wrong thing?

    • @jahmaljeffrey5276

I feel exactly the same, not the same career but I have a strong passion for it years and I just feel a gripping and constricting guilt thinking that God doesn't want me to pursue it. I know my calling and I am working on it but I feel in myself that I can't satisfy myself with the dream I had ever since young. I want to be an animator and create a dream show of mine and just see what's in my mind be conveyed unto a screen. I just want to have a one hit wonder and be satisfied with seeing something I worked hard on, characters I took years to develop and a story I poured my life into...just finally be out of my head where I and my family and friends could just see it together. It's just an adventure story of a few teens who always wanted some excitement in their dull lives and finally get it when a whole new world unfolds to them when they crashland on an undiscovered island and a life becomes and adventure for them. I'm currently doing a degree in animation to reach closer to that goal. I've always had a drive and passion to that goal but I keep beating myself up thinking I should probably give up. I know how the holy spirit's conviction feels like when pulling me away from something and so far that's not the case so I'm struggling with the thought if it's my own guilt and uncertainty or the enemy trying to halt me. When I start drawing digitally the guilty feelings go away and I do it so naturally as if it's like breathing . So I don't know...

So you too, I wish you best of luck in your aspiring career 😊😊

Hey Stuart, thanks for asking. Yes, my best advice (if I can be honest) is to establish some sort of career (special skill that makes you marketable). My reasoning is that in ministry we often have to fund the ministry. It is much more difficult to do that when you don't have a marketable skill. You have your whole life to do ministry. I would suggest doing it concurrently while going to school. That way you will always have the ability to support yourself and possibly a family one day. Thoughts?

What you do, and why you do it, is your mission. While working, love Jesus with all your heart, with all your mind and all your soul. If you keep these in mind, your job won't be a calling, but it is a mission. Police, Fire Fighters, EMS, Doctors, Farmers, Teachers, Mechanics etc. All these jobs can serve the lord with the right mindset and guidance.

Ok so first off, thank you for making this video; it really has cleared things up a bit. But I have a question: 1) would making superhero comic books strictly focusing on God’s work that he has done throughout the Bible in order to promote, explicitly tell, or at least hint/relate to the Gospel and God’s Story and Love be something that God would call me to do. Or to make this a more broad question that can apply to everyone, would God (according to His will and purpose) lead us to take a career that involves both our passion and our calling as Christians.
