If it’s educative it teaches about life. If it’s entertaining it relaxes your mind. Not every content is endless fantasy. I owe some of these “indulgences” to the better version of myself today. The secret is, as you learn you practice towards what you want to achieve in life

Also, why make it harder for yourself by lamenting? Time spent having fun is not lost, it's enjoyed and hopefully a good memory.
Also, not everyone is destined to be a "great hero". Actually, no one is, there are no prophecies and no dragons and no real demons. There are just good people where it's a shame when they waste their talents. And probably bad people where it's really good when they don't become great leaders and shit. More porn for highly motivated bad people I say!

It haunts me to this day, and i struggle with it the older i get. The older I get the sadder I get. I dreamed of becoming a pro footballer, and did nothing all those years. Now it hurts to almost be 30 and have no chance of it. The dissatisfaction/sadness grows each year. For anyone younger, just really do everything you can. I don't want anyone else to suffer from this. Its cliche but give it your all and at least you know you gave it your best if it doesn't work out. Working on just doing whatever you want to achieve day in day out is the only way to even possibly get there. I realized this too late. All the best

The ending was the best, when the knight asked if he could watch the fantasy one more time. He still had options. He could’ve chosen to fight the evil, or even run away, or do anything else but still chose to cling onto the fantasy.

For starters, the villager might not listen to him since he lost their trust by skipping training and not really interact with the rest of the village. I mean, would you trust someone with your life if you knew that they weren't skilled enough or at least was known to skip practice. He gained a bad reputation by not really going to training or socializing with the villagers.
Plus, his skills and health were deteriorating so even if he was in battle, he would probably die pretty quickly. Or he would at least be dead weight holding back the other soldiers.

The grass is always greener on the other side. Nobody is as happy they look, there is always sacrifice. I’m sure you have meant some really great friends that you would have not meant if you took a different path, also gained different skills. Life is also chaos, You might have died in a car crash at 23 if you drove that night going to a extraverted party. Videos like these contradict sayings like ‘be thankful of what you have’, knowledge deepens regret, too much information is toxic. Most people before the internet did not have too much knowledge and information, they were happy enough being the housewife in their White House with the white picket fence and the husband going to a mid job, day in and day out.

addiction / distraction / escape doesn’t arise out of nothing. it’s caused by a lack of healing. we all have a lot to heal in ourselves and our relationships. a healthy person doesn’t prefer escape over real life. for a healthy person, real life is safe, affirming, supportive, challenging, inspiring, and fun. we don’t need to regret being unhealed - that’s just more of the same. the real problem isn’t distraction. it’s believing there’s something wrong with us that we need to fix. we just need to step out of that illusion and remember who we really are.

Or maybe it's the other way around. A healthy person needs escapism because the world is so insane they can't handle it 24/7. Only people living in good conditions in rich countries with all basic plus many more needs met would say that real life is safe, affirming, supportive etc. For the vast majority of the world's population, it's not. Maybe it's not the escapist people who are sick, but the insane systems and twisted culture that made the world like that. Write down goals for the future and break them down into short term goals that you can accomplish on a weekly basis (reading 20 pages of a book, taking notes on a career field, etc) and always count your wins, don’t think you’re a loser because when you count your wins daily you’ll remind yourself how awesome you really are. I came up with a technique that helps me fight off addictive things, hopefully you find it useful also. Basically lets say its junk food, i think people usually resist it by thinking about how good it is and then forcing themselves not to give in to the temptation. I've found its easier to just not think about how good it is in the first place, whenever you feel that thought coming up, just redirect before it has a chance to grab your attention.
I believe it is possible to be given a source of pleasure and reject it, imagine you bite into some junk food and you are then presented with the option to enjoy the taste, or not. I think we automatically say yes to that, so much so that we dont even notice that there is the option. I think if you just say no, I'm not going to enjoy that, and you ignore internally the pleasure it gives you, that means the next time the addiction isn't as strong.
Works for me, dunno if it'll work for you but hopefully it does

daydreaming has always been a part of me for so long. i use it as a coping mechanism to avoid feeling any distress in life. i would create a whole different life in my head where i become this fierce, clever person who seems to have everything together and achieve anything that i desire. but even when i realized hiding in my fantasy castle is not the healthy way to deal with pain, i was reluctant to combat against it. this video hit me hard cuz turn out, the fantasy i create in my head is far more detrimental than i thought. it deceives me to think that i already have what i want to pursuit and take away the motivation to do the required tasks in order to achieve my goals. maybe it is the reason why i haven’t become the person that i want to be. it’s scary that i actually see myself in this knight, starting off with the potential to become great but slowly drowning in his own fantasy world. my favourite thing to do is laying on my bed and dreaming all sort of things just like what the ghost did to the knight.

the first day after watching this video, i was so terrified that i literally stopped daydreaming. but in the second day, i started making conscious decision on when and what to fantasize about. i know it will be a long battle and the initial step for me is to gain some sense of control over this habit. whenever a fantasy slip into my mind, i would ask myself whether i want to continue with this. most of the time the answer is no, but then there were also times that i said yes to myself and keep on fantasizing for a moment of two. but it was brief. maybe there’s something about conscious decision that help shorten the time of each episode. and that way, i don’t judge myself every time i choose to fantasize.
it was awesome to live in present. i feel like i do more when i’m not busy building my imaginary world. today i had a meaningful conversation with my friends and i could feel how excited they were talking to me. and for me, that’s a small win to help me keep going

Now I'm finally becoming free. I too have long way to go. Be aware, you and your mind is not the same thing. Your mind is constantly playing trick on you.

Reading the comments, I see that I'm not the only one who felt "hurt" or "burned" by this video and the realizations that it brought with it. To be fair, I have already been thinking about this since my birthday last month when I realized that I'm nowhere near the place where I always thought I would be at this point in my life. It hurts. And this video, frankly, added to the hurt. At the same time, I can't really blame anyone other than myself for being here.
All of that said, no matter how depressing this realization has been, it has also served as a "kick in the ass" and motivation to get myself out of where I'm at and to where I want to be. I might be way older now than I wish I would be at this point, but my life isn't over yet. It's time to turn off the fantasies and distractions and go out and make myself into the person I can and want to be. Thank you for this, After Skool and everyone else who collaborated on this. I'm gonna save this video as a reminder to my future self when I find myself falling back into bad habits.

I've been reading a lot of the comments with this video. A lot of people want to change their lives for the better. However lots of times people are just directionless.
The very first thing that you can do, if anything, is the start taking care of your body by going to your local gym.
You can put all of your energy into transforming the human body that your spirit lives in.
As you spend more time focusing on your own health, you will find yourself spending less time doing unhealthy things. This is especially true once you start dropping weight. As you start dropping weight you'll notice your energy is starting to increase. This will only happen if you were eating correctly as well. Because there are many people that can drop weight but they can do it in an unhealthy fashion like crash dieting or eating disorders.
However when you drop weight through exercise and proper dieting, you will find your energy increasing and this energy increase will allow you to expand your mental horizons and doing other things.
You see when you are overweight your mind is compromised. You don't see yourself doing very much in life.
But the moment that your body begins to actually get healthier, your mind expands.
once you expand your mental horizons then you will actually envision better things for yourself and with proper willpower you will actually engage in those things.
Always keep a couple of things in mind
      1. action leads to more action
      2. If you want different results in life you must stop doing the same thing. The moment you do something you will literally get a different the result.
(This applies for goals, not for making somebody fall in love with you)
      I hope this helps you.

To be honest, this video will not change you at all. Don't get me wrong, but motivation is not enough .. if you don't realize step by step what you were doing wrong, then this video is useless for u. same like with smoke addiction unless you want to quit smoking, you will do so today, but who smokes cigarettes they all now about it bad effects, but they still smoke.
Video more focusing on younger generation I guess.
I like it when they talk about porn addiction, everyone like porn/romantic movies, but it could be a problem if you don't control it.. and I think not all people will be affected by this "slow poison", a lot of it will depend on personality and circumstances.
People generally already decide what is better for them, so wherever the outcome is, they will take it.
For example lets say you have extra weight and no one tells you that is wrong cos people don't want to fatshame someone, well at this case you end up being fat and die in 60-70 from cancer or ect. For sure, at the end of your path, you be like, " I wish someone would tell me that," but it's bullshit! Even when someone from the side tells you about your problems, you take his word as from the enemy.
Overall, you become who you want to be, and if you have a feeling you want to be something else, well, think carefully cos you a "delusional person." You didn't like the outcome and trying to back up, TOO LATE! take what you deserve and move forward. Some decisions in your life are not reversible. Your decision made you that person who you are right now, so why would you be someone else? For sure we not always have choose or know it and that is part of problem and that's why we are who we are.
Overall, that's why some parents are strict to they own kids so those can become better version of themselves in later life, and what kids do? right, they will not list them for most of the time unless they realize that one day, parents were telling truths, but it could be too late.
(Parents nowadays are like "lets make our kids be transgender Yayy!" Not realizing how it will damage kid in long run)

I'm 31 now and I have already seen the demon that 'attacked my village' and I fell short exactly for the same reasons that are described in this video. It's as if it was a reminder... and the fact that I'm watching it through the same ''seeing spirit'' that showed me all those fantasies is the icing on the cake... Shit, man, how many of us kept watching those mirages instead of living our destiny the way it should've/could've/would've be lived if we were only strong enough to refuse to fool ourselves with illusions... Great animantion and narration, btw...

I can relate personally with this story. Any addiction (pornography, excessive screen time, alcohol and so on), gives some relief (escapism). But, if you find relief only from these addictions, it becomes really bad to get back to the normal mode (I used to be hooked to the computer once upon a time. Now, I realize that it was a bad idea). May all of us find peace and happiness. Edit: it's never easy to get away from any addiction. Sometimes, it's always there, but with lots of patience and stubbornness, you can gain some control over your addiction and perhaps even overcome it completely.

We are encouraged to work hard constantly and never allow ourselves time to rest, wander, and just be animals in the wild. Take your foot off the gas pedal. Notice that the trees don't grow for a third of the year. All kinds of different animals hibernate for the winter. Doing nothing is healthy in small doses. The key is living a balanced life. This story crushed me. What meager hope and motivation I had for life was incinerated when the horror of, why my life is the way it is, finally dawned on me. I started shaking at the end of the video barely capable to click my mouse to pause the video. Then out of bottomless pits of my soul I started to sob. Thank the creator I am alone. I shook with tremendous fury and my sobs turned to a wail that were non-stop, all buried in my now drenched cupped hands. The anguish and pain of the realization of a totally wasted life knifed my heart asunder. I shuttered with wailing and sobbing so loudly that I felt a part of me stepping back and mouth agape gasped at the horror of hell itself bristling up within my body and mind. A rot more than half a century in the making burst its filth into the crying sobbing wreck that was me.
I had talent. Great talent. I once built a toy battle tank out of paper, parts of pens, elastic bands, thimbles, and spent bullet cartridges. It shot toothpicks and I could wind it up so that it rolled across the floor on its own. I was 5 years old. The depression, whatever it actually is, abnormal brain chemicals don't convince me, hit me when I was just a toddler and grew in me like a cancer. I discovered, as a toddler, what this video calls the Spirit of Seeing, the wondrous world of fantasizing which has the modern name of Maladaptive Daydreaming. Yet another label given to anomalies of the soul that western medicine does not understand. For 50 years I was lost in the imaginations of my mind, visions of grandeur, all for the thinking by simply sitting alone and fantaszing about great story lines and stupendous imaginings. I never amounted to much. I never did anything. I was always lost... always alone. People told me I was so athletic, or intelligent, or diligent. All of it squandered... all of it lost to the sands of time. Now I am an old man, no songs, no glory, no magnificent victories await me. I came back to my hometown, the old world of my youth long since tarnished and gone. All I have now is... empty "always's ". The pain of facing the hell of what I SHOULD OF BEEN is grotesquely eviscerating to the soul. I hate myself.
Writing this has helped quell the uncontrollable sobbing. Seeing this fabulously made video was a world shattering moment for me. I just hope I can find that little boy and his paper tank.

I agree. I have a story about that.
They say the best time to learn a second language is to be taught as a child. Studies show that is is vastly more difficult to learn one as an adult.
As a child i refused to learn Spanish as o thought speaking it sounded embarrassing. As i grew older, took Spanish in high school, i realized the long road ahead of me and gave up. Although i excelled in the classes, the reality of what it would take to learn it at my late teens settled in, and i regretted not learning as a child. In my mind, there was nothing i could do but accept that i grew up latino but didn’t speak spanish. 8 years passed since
I then got a job as a flight attendant. For a 6 month period, there was a point where all i did was flights to San Juan puerto rico. I said “fuck it, why not try to use what i learned in high school to speak to these people and help them.” I did that, downloaded a Spanish dictionary app, spoke, went back, referenced my dictionary, spoke again, went home and critiqued my own conversations. I even started watching videos to make sure i got down the grammar of spaniah.
Over 6 months, without me noticing, my fear of conversing in spanish and embarassing myself faded. I iumped into every conversation i could. I stuttered, said embarrassing things without knowing, and was even told by some to “just speak english.” I realized that i had to stop caring. I continued until today.
Now i am writing this on my way hone from colombia. I had all kinds of conversations out here.
many with fluency, and some where I embarrassed myself. At work, people now ask me to help passengers who only speak spanosh, and not only can i speak, but i sound like a native and in some instances, speak as fast as some.
I am now 28. Over the past two years i managed to learn a second language in my adulthood.
So all i can say is, cody, i agree with you. It is not too late for things to change.

It's amazing how true this story is. I used to do nothing but work my job, and then come home and watch a bunch of let's play content. It became a habit for me to do that, over and over again. This led me to fall behind in my hobbies, which required a good deal of concentration and practice. That falling behind led to me rediscovering a lack of self worth that I used to have a long time ago. It led me to have self created conflicts with my family, friends, and girlfriend. It wasn't a happy time. As I grew tired and unsatisfied with that cycle, I eventually decided to clean up my house. Best decision I ever made, because it would spark emotions of self worth that would cause me to not only clean my house, but practice my hobbies again (funny enough, one of which is swordplay) and get my GED. It's fine to indulge yourself with entertainment every once in a while, but when you start to see more value in something so easy and not related to your physical life, it becomes a problem. Unwarranted self indulgence is a slippery slope, regardless of the subject matter. We call it instant gratification these days.

There are those who would say that what you just wrote here is the story you tell yourself about yourself. As long as you believe that story is true, it wil be true. But you can tell yourself another story and believe that instead. It's not easy though. I'm not saying that what happened to you didn't happen and that it didn't damage you. But believing that what happened fully determines who and what you are now, that is a story. And if you want, you could change it. Maybe just a bit. Maybe just add a little possibility here and there. Your brains are not made of concrete. They are malleable. Change can happen. You were a victim then, you don't have to be a victim now. It's not easy, but it's also not impossible. Maybe you could challenge yourself just a little bit every day to be just slightly different than you think you are. Slowly gather evidence for a new story so that one day that will be the story about who you are, and you'll believe it. Good luck.

Production is having an effect on your environment or self, making something happen whether it’s writing, cleaning, walking around the block, singing, cooking, or even focused thought and concentration, problem solving. Consumption is passive. Listening to music, watching a movie, reading blogs, scrolling, snacking, buying things. The best balance is 80/20 production v consumption.

Came up with idea around 5 years ago is that when we spend too much time looking at the things we are not we have a hard to loving and accepting who we are, I think, most people try to be showy and obnoxious not because they really appreciate who they are becoming but are afraid of others successes and fear falling behind. This is definitely a video I needed when I was younger. Granted, I am only just now approaching my 30's, but this addiction I had to social media was a big one for me.
A lot of other people struggle with other things, but I think there is the threat of the story's moral being misunderstood: Escapism itself is not evil. It's actually a good thing in isolation. However, you can't allow escapism to control your life. Not only is constantly subjecting yourself to alternate, optimized realities unhealthy for your acceptance of the real world and how it actually is, but things like these can diminish your motivation. Social media for example? So many people nowadays are depressed because they hop on their phones and are constantly injected with information about other people's lives; what wealth and luxuries they have acquired, what they are doing with their hobbies and friends, how ACCOMPLISHED they are. You see this and both envy and longing kick in, you want to be just as ACCOMPLISHED as they are and the more time you wallow away staring at that screen, the more time you waste that you could have spent doing something more productive.
While I believe Social Media itself is a far, far greater danger that the world doesn't even need (unlike fiction like videogames, books, even something like porn which are all just fleeting momentary fantasies), you still have to REIGN IN how much these things control you.
I, fortunately, lucked out in this regard. I am partial to aspergers which gave me a mildly overactive mind and several other developmental circumstances made me into a person that needs constant and varies stimulation. It is actually slightly difficult for me to just sit down and watch through a whole movie in one sitting with a friend because I need to do something else; play a game, work on my DND campaign, work on assets I intend to sell, wash dishes, workout, do laundry, something or another. A lot of people DON'T have that kind of mentality though.
Escapism is alright, but you need to do things that make reality enjoyable too. If reality isn't enjoyable, you need to start doing something about that NOW and not put it off till "tomorrow", because the convenient thing about "tomorrow" is that it never comes.

I'm sorry to hear that! I myself am 35 years old now. I lost 5 years of my life struggling, and 5 more years I lost thinking about this struggle and enjoying life intentionally, doing whatever I want and don't care about achievements. I'm sorry no one wrote to you, let me say something. I think it's important.
I see how you use words. You say you already have a diagnosis or another, that you have depression, addiction or Asperger's syndrome, but from my experience I see that you do not notice that you love to play with words. It is possible that you are driven by a simple feeling of loneliness, lack of love or simple human happiness, boredom, so in order to feel lonely you could become addicted to social media, in order to impress others, argue with somebody, you have learned many interesting words, but this game itself has become an end in itself for you. In fact, most likely your life is pretty good actually if you have time to play with words.
Imagine that some real misfortune or a real emergency happened in your life - will you have time to verbally determine what is happening inside you at the moment? No. You will simply seek to solve the problem. Remember how you forced yourself to do your homework in elementary school? It is unlikely that you have been engaged in self-digging and learning new words. Basically, it's all psychological hypochondria, but I'm sure from your post that you feel vulnerable because you don't know the truth I'm talking about, you kinda... seeking it, but tired not to find it. You benefit from your depression and introspection because it makes you feel more important, socialised, it entertains you to find solution in words. This is just my opinion.
The most intensive and most honest thing in my life I just reflected in the period after 30 years. Do not make psychological diagnoses for yourself, do not listen to the specialists who make them: this is their money on your hypochondria. Just solve problems. How? Pay attention to such a thing as emotional intelligence, understand your feelings. Good luck stranger!

@@exception05 You just Made me realize something very important: Words, experiences, appearance and actions are poison when there's no value/profit from them that improves our life, but feelings like ACCOMPLISHMENT make us feel that we are doing something valuable, and because we forget most of what we do on social media or in our minds, we end up don't caring of what happens to our lives since it feels lame or too slow on gratification. The best solution I have found to this desease is to find a path/goal that is worth to dedicate your life and not only sacrifice all the poison but even things you like and care about. The Road of a true hero is a ruthless and lonely one, letting go of mortalility and embracing supremacy. So living only on convenient experiences, words and actions that the only "value"(poison) it has is to make you feel good will lead you to the ending of this video, but unlike the MC who became a slave for empty stimulation, we can always try again to rectify and be the master of our lifes and for once dedicating every second for anything that is valuable no matter how little or lacking it feels.
