Kinda explains the truth about getting old...we shrivel up, our hair is thin & our knees don't bend as well as before. BUT, in getting old, we realize that none of our physical selves matter. Like the Little Prince said: "What is essential is invisible to the eye." Thanks, Ms. Streep and Mr. Winston. You've 'charmed' my evening. God bless............
I grew up having this read to me by my grandmother. She's been gone a long time now but I'll never forget her. I had forgotten how this story went but I remembered the pictures from the old book... I'm glad I found this
My dad told me I cried my eyes out to this when I was little. He passed away a few months ago and now I find myself looking it up so reminisce X a beautiful tale X
I forgot how good these small productions were. XD When I was little I would watch all sorts of Rabbit Ears stories. I'm in college now, suffering from insomnia, miserable. But I just found this by chance, and here I am, being comforted and nursed, finding myself wanting to sleep, being read a bedtime story, just like when I was little. It's such a nice change of pace. Thanks so much for uploading!
Wow! This story stuck with me so much. I grew up thinking that if only my mom would love me then maybe I would feel real to her and to me. Trip out this brought up a lot of memories crazy!
This cartoon as well as Raymond Briggs The Snowman has a special place in my heart where the majic of childhood still dwells deep within, waiting to be poured out and passed on to my son who has yet to see such creations of wonder. I can hardly wait!
53 and sitting on my dresser are my REAL friends. A pink bunny and a teddy bear. fur gone. one of the eyes i think i ate at the age of 3. once a little added stuffing to keep their neck up. I had to move and they got packed away. when i realized they ended up in the storage unit i went and got them and apologized for their inconvenience. and so i will be an oldold lady someday and when I die my real friends will be laid to rest with me.
This story showed me in part how and why to serve. I am now a disabled veteran with daily suffering. However, the words and thoughts and feelings and images I have from service have come to give reason to the price I pay for gallantry and sacrifice. I now know at age 63 years that I would have acquired damage from living. Service gives aging value and meaning. One way is selfish and does little to touch your heart. The other makes us real men and women of worth. We may not have statues errectide in our honor. In fact, how many of those with such honors are truly worthy of them? I only need what my heart and mind tell me are are the greatest riches and that is self-respect and a history of good works; whether lauded by others or not.
The entire Rabbit Ears library -- 65 stories in all -- is for sale as DVDs and hard cover books through the Rabbit Ears web site with links to the Random House Listening Library site where audiobooks (CDs) are also for sale. My kids--ages 13 and 11--love to listen to them over and over again in the car... seems they really are great for children of all ages.
The skin horse made me smile and made me think of my little Simba. He is bald in places and his magnet is losing its magnetivity :3 Such a lovely video
Man oh man did this make me cry! I'm a very nostalgic person and I remember watching this back in '86/'87 in the first grade. I wish I could see it in its entirety but thank you for sharing this. It was just enough to help me remember.
This aired on PBS in 1986 (with an offer for the movie, book & audiocassette afterwards) followed by "The Snowman" (1982) starring David Bowie. Remember? :)
I just nostalgia'd hard at this. This was my favorite story as a kid, looking back at it now, it's so damn emotionally intense. Proof that stories for children don't have to be stupid in order for them to be enjoyed.
Love this story. It's so beautiful. It makes me cry to this day. Stuffed animals can be very special. My Cheetah Mtani, that my boyfriend gave me I'm so attached to. She goes on every trip with me and I cuddle her every night.
Hey , she's Meryl , she can do anything as far I'm concerned! I never knew it was her reading this story until just recently ,when I had seen her in a few movies!
Thank you for posting! How beautiful it is! I am a big fan of children's pictorial book that has pure and comfortable space to feel. Someday I want to compose music for beautiful works like this. God Bless you^^*
So I've never read this story in my life and I love it. I'm in a children's literature class and this is one of the books we are supposed to read... does the story end there? Is there more? What happens to the Velveteen Rabbit?! Such a cliff hanger. But in all seriousness, does the book really end there? Help pleaseeee
I wish you would post the full video... it doesn't make any sense to do this partial story. If you had posted the full video, people would still want to buy the video from you to give as gifts. No one listening to this partial story will know why they should buy the video. This partial thing has no emotional impact.
Only this one. My parents taped it off PBS for me and my sister awhile back. My dad has Winston's "December" CD, and I recognized some from this, but I can't remember which track was which.
I still cry when I read this story. Whatta big baby..... We need so much more real in our world, today......and a lot less make believe! I start with me........and END there!!!
+Paul Poulin you're not a big baby. You're 'real'. That is a person who feels & has a heart. Someone this story appeals to, not the unfeeling non-understanding one who "don't get it" at all.
Ohhhh, man. I had the book and cassette when I was a youngin', but I never realized that it was originally a TV production (only selected illustrations made it into the book). And like others here, I never realized it was Meryl Streep. This is one of those things, like "Fox and the Hound", that I just can't listen to because they really mess me up inside. I can't hear George Winston's music without my eyes getting wet. That's why I refuse to ever listen to this again. Can't bear it.
@casanovahagfish Me too!!! I grew up practically watching any Rabbit Ears story!! My favorites were The Fool and the Flying Ship and Brer Rabbit and Boss Lion!
i never read/saw this before!! i brought 2 new rabbits today and i thought of "Velvet as a name, then decided to look up the Velveteen Rabbit. i never knew that if you loved a toy enough, then it becomes "real"! aaaw my Teddy reminds me of the Skin Horse in the story :') old and shabby, with his hair rubbed out in places, riddled with holes and only 1 eye.... aaaaw :') (ok i know they don't come alive but i genuinly beleive they have a soul lol)
Can somebody please tell me which George Winston pieces are featured in this? I found two of them ("Carol of the Bells" and "Thanksgiving"), but I can't seem to find the rest of them.
Ok I have a question about the Skin Horse. He said "The Boy's Uncle made me Real," So how come he was still a toy and not a real horse out in a field somewhere?
Suggie Thames I was confused by this too but then re-read it and it seems there are 2 stages of real. Real in the child's eyes and then real to the world. The Skin Horse must just be real to the Uncle. It was the fairy who made the Velveteen Rabbit real to the world.
If you think about how he described other toys and relate them to people... you will gain a better understanding. What is valuable (real) to you may not be valuable to others. For example, if you have a loving grand parent (a person without price to you) then you may get the picture of what happens to you when they are real. Yes, they are all the things that the skin horse described and more. With this being said if you were to see an old person and think that they are nothing you are wrong.... they are REAL to someone... value (real) is different to different people. Children see the world very differently than the way we see it. An acorn could be a valued treasure but to an adult it is meaningless. Another way to say this is, that if you were told you could only take a few items from your home you probably would not take the most expensive but what you hold REAL. A photo album, things that are REAL TO YOU but may not be of value. I will bet that when the toy chest is cleaned out that horse will remain... sorry if too deep... I just really love this story...
Because there's real and then there's Real. It's sort of 2 stages in terms of becoming Real. Even the Nursery Magic fairy says so herself. "You were real to the boy, because he loved you. But now, you shall be Real to everyone." Kind of how like in the novel "Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West," it's explained the difference between animals and Animals. The ones referred to as animals are speechless and like the animals we know of. But then there are Animals, who have a soul and sentience and can speak and converse with humans. That's basically mind of the difference between real and Real in the Velveteen Rabbit.
I have a blanket that has been with me fsince r my whole life. She (blanket) is all torn up and beaten but when they dolls make fun of me I cry and say '' STOP she is real no matter what. I CRIED and hugged my blanket. I'm 10 and I watch Jake Paul;)
This story legit makes me weep like a baby.
Do you need a hug?
If the book isn't working properly, try replacing the batteries.
Yes, it's very sad for me a well.
Kinda explains the truth about getting old...we shrivel up, our hair is thin & our knees don't bend as well as before. BUT, in getting old, we realize that none of our physical selves matter. This and Watership Down gave me a huge appreciation for rabbits in my childhood.
One of the sweetest stories ever written.
I had the vhs of this during my childhood. Sweet memories. :)
The part about becoming real still brings tears to my eyes. I wish more people would be "real."
Omg!!! I use to listen to this all the time as a kid!!! Please post the rest of the story!!
I'm suddenly thinking of The Velveteen Rabbit as a meme, saying:
"I was the original toy story before Pixar created Toy Story."
I love this video
Haha, good one!
The nutcracker and steadfast tin soldier would be in that meme too lol
I grew up having this read to me by my grandmother. She's been gone a long time now but I'll never forget her. I had forgotten how this story went but I remembered the pictures from the old book... I'm glad I found this

awesomegrace222 when my son died aged forty his favourite teddy went with him.
16 years old and this still makes me cry as much as when i was 3, no lie this still gives me bad dreams 😭😅
Oh my heart. I haven’t heard this in over 30 years.
This story showed me in part how and why to serve. I am now a disabled veteran with daily suffering. Thank you for your service! light and healing your way...

Beautiful! So wise . Thank you so much
I remember when I was little I had a big book of this story. I had my mom read it to me. Here I am listening to it again.
Man this is just the sweetest little thing.

The earliest story I can remember as a child.

So DId Mobb Deep use this for a sample? asking for a friend
@Daveycrocket16 It's not like Meryl Streep is renown for doing amazingly accurate accents or anything.
Does anyone remember the story book Leo the Lop? I want to get my hands on a Original copy.
@moviencartoons2
I wasn't sure on that either. Maybe that was the name they were going to have before they changed the name to Rabbit Ears.
