I remember buying that first Maroon 5 album after hearing Harder to Breathe and feeling I’d been swindled. I think he has even said he chose to go the more commercial, pop route. I was completely blown away by this performance, like many others wondering why he would waste that talent, especially when you listen to follow up interviews with Stern & Adam admits he wasn’t really sure what he was going to do during the solo in the song. I still love Songs about Jane and the influence it had on my adult music taste. “Sunday Morning”, “The Sun”, “Secret” and “Not Coming Home” still get heavy rotation on my playlists. Also, his voice was a lot less nasally back then. Don’t know what happened.
Yep, that's me , too. I just commented the same but ventured I suspicion that what went wrong was his taking on 'The Voice'. That's certainly when everything started sounding the same. As we know from Justin - these talent shows don't have to infect your musical tastes, but his fame shot up, then, and that is hard not to pander to. 😢
Spot on! Songs About Jane is on my regular rotation (the fact my with is called Jayne helps! ;) ) but they totally sold out to the pop hits world, which is where my issue around Levine's ego lie........looking at early interviews it was obvious he wanted fame (and fortune) above almost all else.....the life of a struggling musician with integrity was not his chosen path. And now he's hugely successful, wealthy and famous, and can still play and sing like that when he chooses, who am I to judge him?! In truth, I listened again to their follow up album, It Won't Be Soon Before Long, and have to say, although way over-produced for my tastes, there's some great playing, singing and songs on that one too..........but I do draw the line at Moves Like Jagger......utter vacuous pop nonsense.
Yeah, the talent of Levine/Maroon 5, IMO, have never been in question--Songs about Jane shows that they are incredibly talented. What's been in question is their desire to make music like that--music that takes actual reflection, dedication, and work. I can't blame them for just taking a paycheck (as this paycheck is quite large) but I can certainly say that their music reflects the choice they made to release saccharine crap that charts well but has no real 'soul' to it and soul is what gives songs a lasting quality.
I agree. They were the band from our "rival" high school, and I feel like they were better back then. Adam Levine's voice is actually amazing, but the music they've been choosing since Songs About Jane doesn't showcase it and feels very much like a choice made for fame rather than art. It obviously worked and no one can blame them for making the money and taking the fame
I watch that frequently! It is fantastic! I love watching Dhani Harrison’s face at points during that performance. He lights up like a child with the joy of it.

I saw Stevie Nicks join Adam Levine for a song at a Hollywood Bowl Maroon Five concert maybe ten years ago. She revealed the limits of his performance without even trying. You couldn’t help comparing his somewhat posed performance to her authentic power. The depth of her connection to her instrument, the ability to express subtle emotion, even the way she moved made everyone realize they were in the presence of a true rock n roll icon. And there was only one on that stage. Take care of yourself, Justin. You make the cut.
I watched that performance on your recommendation. You are correct about Stevie surpassing Adam's vocal. But one thing I need to say in Adam's defense: he was in the middle of his band's entire set. Proud of myself for noticing the theme song was a different key than normal before you said anything. Making me feel like I’ve got perfect pitch or something lol
I’m glad I stuck around right to the ads - “hooooo-ooooo….” Where did it all go wrong? Same question I had when Moves Like Jagger appeared. Nicely done, J.
From the very first time I ever heard Moves Like Jagger all that got stuck in my head was Beavis and Butthead on their show when they would play a song and show them dancing to it pretending to smack someone's ass. Must be something wrong with me. Makes me laugh every time I hear it.
I’m new to your channel Justin and i have to say, you are one of the nicest guys I’ve ever heard in any walk of life, let alone the murky world of music! I share a lot of your opinions but unfortunately I don’t convey them anywhere close to your level of balance and fairness..great channel and i can’t wait to catch up with it all
I can handle the odd early Maroon 5 before they went the way of Coldplay. I’m even going to admit that I don’t hate Moves Like Jagger (though in my defence I sing the Key of Awesome parody version when I hear it). But I’m not sure I’m feeling this performance as much as others, apart from the solo which shows promise. I think Pat Monahan showed more personality in 10 seconds there than Adam did through the whole thing. He’s just become so margarine. In other news, Stan Walker’s cover of Purple Rain is just brilliant, well worth a listen.
@@mikeo5657 It didn't disappear. Prince ripped a hole in the fabric of reality, through space & time itself, with that solo, casually tossed the guitar through it, & walked away... That last note's been ringing out across whatever exists outside our reality ever since✌🏼
I’m pretty sure this performance is a direct response to John Mayer’s cover of Like a Rolling Stone from earlier in the night. That’s an incredible performance, you would be pretty keen on it me thinks, check it out!
And to be fair, Wendy did the heavy lifting on the rhythm of that song on the recording. She is the bulk of what you hear in the rhythm for this song on the album and in fact arranged the part with her own chord voicings. Prince loved the voicings she used on that song and left her to do it as she saw fit. And yeah, M5 was once pretty cool. It's always so disappointing when people with so much talent phone it in when they're capable of so much more. It's odd, but the same product can sound great coming from people trying so hard to make it happen vs coming from people capable of so much greater.
Hi Justin.. once again congrats on another crackin vid. You're my favourite thing on the web! It's got it all, music nerdery, comedy and above all else, honesty.. So, I'd like to know how recovery affected your outlook on the creative process and music in general :) cheers
They're playing it a semitone higher than the original too, (which would make the opening chords impossible to play.) guess that's why the other guitarist has a capo.
I remember this from the Howard Stern B-Day Bash 2014. The house band was Train who do some of the best Led Zeppelin covers you'll ever hear. There were some really good performances besides Adam Levine's Purple Rain. Rob Zombie/John5, John Mayer, Jewel, The Black Keys, John Fogerty, Dave Grohl, Jon Bon Jovi, Closing the show was Steven Tyler with Slash and Dave Grohl on drums. Pretty good collection of musicians showed up and performed that night.
I did hear a "conspiracy" a while back that Moves Like Jagger and Tick Tock by Ke$ha (kick em to the curb unless they look like Mick Jagger) were both released around a time, by the same label as the Stones, to throw in some references to them and build a little hype (whether it's needed or not) to new crowds for upcoming releases and tour. I actually quite like that theory.
I was blown away by the Purple Rain performance when I first saw it didn’t expect it at all after completely agreeing with you on the dreadful “Moves like Jagger” actually hurt my soul that “song” Don’t know why Lavine doesn’t create and perform meaningful, powerful music there IS DEFINITELY more to life than the top 40 and money!
Money and pussy. The SECOND a band starts getting a female audience, they chase whatever garbage new sound they put out there that attracted the women in the first place and they never come back from it
I would absolutely love for you to take an in-depth look at someone like Bob Dylan and the evolution of his writing/vocal style. Maybe a video comparing “Song to Woody” first album 1962, to something like “Murder Most Foul” latest album 2020
They had their hay day with first two albums. So Long Maroon 5. It is an okay mimic🥱. As a big fan of Prince, this makes me cringe. You know who is the King who can sing/ cover pop tunes Corey Taylor Slipknot!!! Corey's voice with pop songs give shivers, so much soul.
Well, you really need to watch Pat Finnerty’s What Makes This Song Stink. He makes a funny, and very intelligent breakdown of why this song and others Stink. Justin was even fooled by Finnerty’s fake emo band/song, and talked about it, although I really think Justin was in on the joke, just being a good sport.
Cracking, but I prefer the Waterboys version (I'm biased when it come to the Waterboys though). Prince covering the Whole of the Moon was pretty special too - as you would expect!
As someone with a very deep voice when I sing in a higher register I find it much easier to crank out the notes I would really struggle to get to with a sort of nasally tone...seems to be a legit singing technique
The one Adam Levine song I like is the one he made for the movie Sing Street, think it's called 'Go Now'. I related to it a lot and thought it really worked well for the film. Most of his other stuff I'm really not a fan of though.
Pat Finnerty would have an aneurysm seeing the Adam/Train combo. Justin can make jabs in the classiest way possible. I was thinking the same about the guitar! But the nasally voice and Maroon 5 is just is shopping mall music. Justin I think if Adam wrote a song it’d have lines like “Is it leg day? I gotta see that booty! Booty ooty ooty”. That’d only work for Spinal tap😄
In my opinion, one should have multiple guitars... at least one for each tuning. In addition to standard and E flat, I use open G, E, DADGAD, the Rain Song tuning ( EADADE) . So, at least 6.
Good day to you, Justin! I too have the greatest disdain for crap/non-rhyming lyrics and wondered if you had a top 5 of the worst rhymes in the popular music genre. My starter for ten would be the Police’s “Spirits in the Material World” which contains the (c)rhyme: “Our so-called leaders speak With words they try to jail you They subjugate the meek But it’s the rhetoric or failure” I’m generally not one of those who likes to pile on Mr Sting, as would appear fashionable, but by god this is probably as good a reason as any. Anyway, love the channel, keep up the good work (etc). ❤️ PS - feck, I meant to post this under your ‘Moves Like Jagger’ video, which would make more sense! 😂

I saw Train live some years back because a friend had a free ticket. The lead singer has an incredible voice and is very charismatic on stage. They did a cover of Lep Zep's Going to California that blew me away.
Oh, I'd like to hear that. Where are the "complete concert filmers and on youtube putters" when you need them? 😉
Did my edit work? I don't know, it disappeared when I posted it.... Again. Here is Train with Going to California live: ua-cam.com/video/QZOyYuhJOws/v-deo.html
Thanks for posting this. He does a great jon hitting Plant's high notes!
@@ginnashupper725 He's awesome! Thank you for telling your concert experience. Discovered an awesome cover version. 🙂
Justin, could you please incorporate a yodel into your theme tune. Love the show ⭐️
I'm sure Adam Levine will find his voice some day. Maybe.
Check out the song Gotten that he sings on the Slash solo album from 2010, it's a beautiful track
You should check out Levine's cover of Seasons on Stern Show. It was brilliant!
I agree. Also have you seen Mike Love’s cover of Seasons?
I've turned my strat into a lawn dart. It's 1999 christmas special and it doesn't look like that. Relics
Proud of myself for noticing the theme song was a different key than normal before you said anything. Making me feel like I’ve got perfect pitch or something lol
same
That guitar is a Fender Jason Smith Masterbuilt Ultimate Relic and Adam owns Three: Olympic White, Shell Pink and Lake Placid Blue
This is the stuff of Pat Finnerty’s nightmares 😂
I’m glad I stuck around right to the ads - “hooooo-ooooo….”
Where did it all go wrong? Same question I had when Moves Like Jagger appeared.
Nicely done, J.
From the very first time I ever heard Moves Like Jagger all that got stuck in my head was Beavis and Butthead on their show when they would play a song and show them dancing to it pretending to smack someone's ass. Must be something wrong with me. Makes me laugh every time I hear it.
😂
I’m new to your channel Justin and i have to say, you are one of the nicest guys I’ve ever heard in any walk of life, let alone the murky world of music! I share a lot of your opinions but unfortunately I don’t convey them anywhere close to your level of balance and fairness..great channel and i can’t wait to catch up with it all
Good Lord, Adam Levine with Train as backing band. Someone call Pat Finnerty
Hey Justin! Those ink sleeves are looking great man. Keep these magnificent videos comin' my good Sir.
Purple Rain is probably one of the best songs ever .
Unforgettable solo! That song is an anthem.
Rather watch Prince doing the guitar solo in " My Guitar Gently Weeps " . Legend 👍
The legend of the disappearing guitar lives on!!
Foo fighters' "Best of me" from super bowl, after they did darling nikki
You should hear Malmsteen doing it! Wow! He utterly ruins it. Definitely worth hearing.
@@mikeo5657 It didn't disappear. Prince ripped a hole in the fabric of reality, through space & time itself, with that solo, casually tossed the guitar through it, & walked away... That last note's been ringing out across whatever exists outside our reality ever since✌🏼
God I love you, right down to your clothing angst…. which I also have as a middle-aged female 😂❤
Thanks Chris! :)
Finnerty is rolling over in his grave. Nails on a f'ing chalkboard.
Prince wrote a lot of songs for other singers but he wrote this one for himself because he was the only one who could do it
Agree wholeheartedly. I'm irrationally angry watching this lol. And I thoroughly enjoy a good Prince cover. This ain't it
The only one I’ve seen doing a good job covering this song is Clapton
Same as most modern bands, their greatest moments are always covers.
His guitar face makes him look like the kinda guy who likes to rough up his partner during sex.
There were some pretty spectacular musical performances in that birthday show.
I was blown away by the Purple Rain performance when I first saw it didn’t expect it at all after completely agreeing with you on the dreadful “Moves like Jagger” actually hurt my soul that “song”
Don’t know why Lavine doesn’t create and perform meaningful, powerful music there IS DEFINITELY more to life than the top 40 and money!
Money and pussy. The SECOND a band starts getting a female audience, they chase whatever garbage new sound they put out there that attracted the women in the first place and they never come back from it
I actually really like his vocals on "Gotten" the song he did with slash, and in fairness I love the song
Yea that was fantastic
That's whole Slash album is 🔥
I would absolutely love for you to take an in-depth look at someone like Bob Dylan and the evolution of his writing/vocal style.
Maybe a video comparing “Song to Woody” first album 1962, to something like “Murder Most Foul” latest album 2020
Great outro..... Thank you.
Justin Fucking Hawkins Rides Again 🏇
They had their hay day with first two albums. So Long Maroon 5. It is an okay mimic🥱. As a big fan of Prince, this makes me cringe. You know who is the King who can sing/ cover pop tunes Corey Taylor Slipknot!!! Corey's voice with pop songs give shivers, so much soul.
I don’t know, in my humble option I still think he is really mediocre.
You're entitled to your opinion. I have the same opinion.
@@roymartin500 thanks! :) I avoid depreciating people for free, but yeah, he is not so good regardless Purple Rain and all…
Well, you really need to watch Pat Finnerty’s What Makes This Song Stink. He makes a funny, and very intelligent breakdown of why this song and others Stink.
Justin was even fooled by Finnerty’s fake emo band/song, and talked about it, although I really think Justin was in on the joke, just being a good sport.
@@roymartin500
😆 Haven’t heard someone say that in years.
@@CorbCorbin Justin was on the show, like episode 2.
What about LOST STARS Justin? Would like to see you critique that track.
Cracking, but I prefer the Waterboys version (I'm biased when it come to the Waterboys though). Prince covering the Whole of the Moon was pretty special too - as you would expect!
Wow that's one of my fave tunes ever
I swear I heard you say "Madame Levine" in the beginning… 😆✌️❤️🤘
Haha. He certainly acts like a Madame sometimes.
As someone with a very deep voice when I sing in a higher register I find it much easier to crank out the notes I would really struggle to get to with a sort of nasally tone...seems to be a legit singing technique
Nickleback did a cover of zz tops sharp dressed man . Its actually pretty good!
Superb analysis
Bowie did my favorite rendition of "Fame" at a Howard Stern birthday bash, kinda techno and weirdly hard to find on the youtubes.
In my opinion, one should have multiple guitars... at least one for each tuning. In addition to standard and E flat, I use open G, E, DADGAD, the Rain Song tuning ( EADADE) . So, at least 6.
I am a fan. I agree with pop part but there’s still some kick ass pop songs. He does an awesome job with seasons by soundgarden as well.
Good day to you, Justin! I too have the greatest disdain for crap/non-rhyming lyrics and wondered if you had a top 5 of the worst rhymes in the popular music genre. My starter for ten would be the Police’s “Spirits in the Material World” which contains the (c)rhyme:
“Our so-called leaders speak
With words they try to jail you
They subjugate the meek
But it’s the rhetoric or failure”
I’m generally not one of those who likes to pile on Mr Sting, as would appear fashionable, but by god this is probably as good a reason as any.
Anyway, love the channel, keep up the good work (etc). ❤️
PS - feck, I meant to post this under your ‘Moves Like Jagger’ video, which would make more sense! 😂
Haha, thanks Gary!!
Please review some Doctor Feelgood! I'd like to hear your opinions on Brilleaux and Wilko and the boys.
I fell into an unsightly trough.
It's a bit deep and I am struggling to get out.
Help!
Porcelain by the RHCP covered by Miguel is an amazing display of vocal abilities, I would love to hear your opinion on that take.
Maroon 5 went the same way as Coldplay: started off promising and slowly descended into bland commercialism.
"...where did it all go wrong?" Ha. Perfect. I too chuckled.
