  • Trinidad is a Caribbean island close to Venezuela, named by Christopher Columbus on his third trip to the Americas. It was colonized by different European countries, including Spain, France, and England, which is why people there speak English now.
The island has a mix of people from different backgrounds because it had slavery for 300 years.
This is a very wealthy country, primarily relying on oil and gas, which is why it’s not so touristy. Nowadays People know it for its big carnival celebrations and music.
But there's a hidden side to Trinidad. It's caught in problems with illegal drugs and corruption. The island is a major stop for cocaine moving from South America to the US and Europe, which causes big problems in its society. That’s why the last few years, the murder rates have skyrocketed, making Trinidad, the 6th highest crime rate country in the world! That’s mostly due to gang wars in neighborhoods like the one I’m about to visit: 'Laventille.”

this was an excellent documentary my friend. I have family in Trinidad and worry about them. It is good to see and hear from the people who are living in this unnecessary cycle of violence - really sad that this their reality. It will take strong leaders to bring the sides together, forgive, reconcile and move forward. If it could happen in Rwanda after the genocide, it can happen here. let's keep hope.

This video proves so much. So many people are labeled as ‘bad’ but I believe everyone first instinct is to be good. We all have loved ones, families, friends; we all laugh and love the same way. I wish more people like these had opportunities to live their real dreams and be happy the way they truly want to be and not the way most of them are forced to be. What I admire about them is that despite how unfairly life is to them, despite how misunderstood they are, they seem to still have a joy inside. I just wish things could be different… for all of us.

It breaks my heart to see the island portrayed in such a devastated, corrupted way. recently - i honestly have no clue why- but all of a sudden Laventilles has sparked such a huge interest from travellers over the Atlantic this year, like from COCOBOY and Going Global. I've passed the suburb of Port of Spain many times and it is an area controlled by gangs like Rasta and the muslims who have been battling it out ever since the 90s after the jamaat al muslimeen coup on the government. people here know hardship and violence and it breaks every Trinis heart to see our country this way. Not just that but drugs, poverty and neglect from the government are also driving factors to the unliveable conditions and gang warfare. Laventille despite the stigmas have been a place of cultural significance for our nations history- the steel pan was invented there, A lot of Soca artists emerge from the area being the pride of our country. I wish the best for our beautiful nation to rise up and for conditions to get better 😢🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹
