Buckthorn Trail Rehabilitation (Modjeska Peak Singletrack)

Buckthorn is 1 mile long trail that descends 600 vertical feet from Modjeska Peak's shoulder, heading North towards Four Corners. This singletrack trail is a fast and chunky straight shooter that provides one of the best views of the Santa Anas northward.
This summer season, Buckthorn has been practically unpassable due to the thick overgrowth of the thorny Ceanothus for which the trail is named. In the course of a little over one week, I spent 6 different days pedaling up Maple Springs Road to work on clearing back the brush. I had help from two different people and together we put in about 30 man hours of trail work (car-to-car time). I expect our work to last the remainder of this season and possibly all of next year's spring growth as well, after which it will inevitably need another tune-up. Until then, with our work, hikers and bikers alike now have a clear path again from Four Corners to Modjeska Peak, keeping us pedestrians off the dusty and dangerous vehicle-packed Main Divide.
This trail work story is just one of many in the history of our Santa Ana mountains. Without us current trail users shouldering the burden of keeping up the trails we use, we lose them and all the people's efforts who came before. It is the current trail users responsibility to keep up the legacy.
