I love this guys playing. He is a monster on the drum kit. I loved his drumming ever since I saw him play in the Steve Vai Astoria gig in 2001. Brillaint player and amazing drummer.
@court2784 The thing I love about Virgil is his single & double stroke rolls are so clean and consistent. I was fortune enough to see Virgil way back in the late 80's & early 90's in clubs & pubs in Melbourne (Virgil's hometown!), he was doing things back then that's never been seen since. Things were moving so fast that nobody bothered to document, we were all just mesmerised at watching him play that we forgot to press record!! LOL!!
First track I heard of Virgil was on a Modern Drummer CD backin 98. I was thinking how do you do this, and I listened over and over. This guy inspires so many.
Strong, Real, Real, Real strong. He laid it all on the table with that. That's amazing passion (and skill, of course). I'll have to remember that next time I timidly muff a solo.
4:06-4:19 my favorite section. This was my Virgil's Virgin years...his best. Sic guitarist double tapper. Great band....freakin at last minute and half.
Virgil is a combination of all the top drummers... he is also king of speed. No matter how great the top drummers are Virgil is just a little bit ahead.
@PickUpYourLighters that's cool man, that's what makes every drummer unique! If everyone liked the exact same thing music would be boring. U still recognize the musicianship in his playing, which is what matters.
@Samsgarden he is very musical in his playing. Perhaps the musical settings he puts himself in requires just loud drums, but he can and DOES play with dynamics, rhythmical understanding, and an all around understanding of his instrument.
Yeah, and this was over 10 years ago!! You think he was good back then? He's doing stuff right now that the brains of us mere mortals can't begin to comprehend.
THANK YOU! I hate comparing drummers, but when all of these people are making such bold statements about Virg on this one clip it's annoying. He has really good feet yes, but feet are only a part of the equation. End.
@Samsgarden Can you explain what you mean with Hard Rock? I mean you know that the base of hard rock is melody, right? but this is a solo listen to watch?v=w4aEz_nr8p8&feature=fvwrel
One of the most dedicated hard working drummer...BUT...haven't heard him play jazz...old school jazz that actually swings hehe....Derek Roddy can play jazz quite convincingly once he shared some of his JAzz stuff long time ago at Virgil's forum. I'm just wondering silly how Virgil would sound like jazz playing a basic jazz beat hehe.
where is the link that roddy can play jazz convincingly and when i mean jazz not that stiff ass big band swing that marco minnerman and other rock gguys folks claim can play jazz ..play!!!!
Hey , you can hear the following songs in which Virgil plays a more conventional jazz songs : " Herbert " and " Fickle Funk, " both belong to the Bunny Brunnel's album " Invent Your Future ". You can also put in youtube the following: "Virgil Donati Band at the Baked Potato - Sept. 23rd, 2004 II" , " Bells of Freedom - Linda Cable, Singer Songwriter, & "Local Heroes" and "Austin Peralta Memorial Concert - Nothing Personal" Maybe you get what you are looking for...
yeah weckl can play jazz...I saw roddy he cant ..playing big band jazz barely doesnt equate to playing jazz well..on guy who can play jazz well and i was surprised was simon phillips good cat....!!!! and one dude whos swing is stiff is billy cobham ..its all interesting!!!

Thing is, I don't want to hear Virgil play jazz. He's one of the greatest to ever live as it stands. I like him in the genres he's chosen. No one tops this monster.
Ignore those fuckers. Most posers who talk about drummers so pretenciously have never touch a drum set in their entire life... the rest is people who think that a drummer who doesn't play black metal at 200bpm is not a drummer. Virgil owns. Heil metal.
@farrex0 I've watched this before and it does very little for me. I prefer subdued, nuanced playing- something most musicians don't quite fathom. Virgil is great and all, but so what, he's also crude and falls somewhere in the metal-prog scene -which makes me recoil You might find all this offensive but I don't mean it that way. I just prefer tasteful playing-and Virgil doesn't have it. It was never his life's mission to be musical anyway- he just wanted to be a technical drummer.
Utter rubbish , If you have followed him from the very beginning you would know that he has played in many pop and rock bands in Australia where he played straight groove he was the Drummer in many Musicals aswell . He is also an accomplished classical pianist Ask Weckl and Chambers etc if he is musical and they will tell you that he is very musical
subatomic10 i dont wanna rag on the guy. he got chops for days but i havent really heard him play anything remotely musical. he was good in loose change though.
Man. I remember first seeing Virgil in Jr. High school.
I could not and still cant believe the ... Power and perfectness of his drumming.
that snare is killer diller. love how it's tuned. just cuts thru.
this is in the most insane moments of drummers 2

This is insane brilliance.
God....Please let me see these guys before I die.
Amen.
Amazing human being is Virgil....!!!!!!
Killed it!!!
First track I heard of Virgil was on a Modern Drummer CD backin 98. I was thinking how do you do this, and I listened over and over. This guy inspires so many.
Love Virgil...absolutly horsepower
love that snare!

Can you imagine how FUN it would be to be able to do that??!!!!!
I love that Virgil is so technically talented, but he still beats his drums really hard.
Strong, Real, Real, Real strong. He laid it all on the table with that. That's amazing passion (and skill, of course). I'll have to remember that next time I timidly muff a solo.
I agree with you luke228899. I love the crack the snare has when he hits a single stroke. Amazing stuff from an amazing drummer.
this was such a great era in Virgil's career. it was the period that first tripped everyone the fuck out.
Virgils great!
Lot of elements in this solo show up in the one he did on the Steve Vai Live DVD.
yea!
Woow!!
Virgil playing Yamaha drums... great sound. Maple custom rules!!!
NB

awesome!!! seen him live before in Adelaide... liked watching him do this better!!
@court2784 Virgil Donati is the best drummer in the world. There cannot be argument about it.When he plays he mocks time.
4:06-4:19 my favorite section.
This was my Virgil's Virgin years...his best.
Sic guitarist double tapper.
Great band....freakin at last minute and half.
the snare sounds fuckin great here! and his playing... awesome!
Kevin King was on keyboards on this one..I remember that night like yesterday..
his bass drum sounded awesome
Please let there be someone who has the whole concert! 🙏👊💪
Que buen batero, en este solo se nota mucho el estilo que tiene en los solos :D
The best rock drummer of all times
awesome!!!!! WEW
Virgil is a combination of all the top drummers... he is also king of speed. No matter how great the top drummers are Virgil is just a little bit ahead.
WOW! His style is sooo different compared to now....
@PickUpYourLighters that's cool man, that's what makes every drummer unique! If everyone liked the exact same thing music would be boring. U still recognize the musicianship in his playing, which is what matters.
Virgil is from Planet X both literally and figuratively! :)
virgil=top notch
じょうずい!!
@Samsgarden he is very musical in his playing. Perhaps the musical settings he puts himself in requires just loud drums, but he can and DOES play with dynamics, rhythmical understanding, and an all around understanding of his instrument.
Bloody fuckin ell!!!
Yeah, and this was over 10 years ago!! You think he was good back then? He's doing stuff right now that the brains of us mere mortals can't begin to comprehend.
@PickUpYourLighters haha thx
that fuckin snare drum is a monster.
THANK YOU! I hate comparing drummers, but when all of these people are making such bold statements about Virg on this one clip it's annoying. He has really good feet yes, but feet are only a part of the equation. End.
Yamaha maple custom ! Pinstripe batter heads ?
@court2784 anybody saying that on Donati's drumming has no ear for any sort of music, let alone DRUM.
that second guitar solo has some tasty bits too
Exempt
@sweetfly66 and you can tell by listening to a bad quality youtube video...
@Samsgarden Can you explain what you mean with Hard Rock? I mean you know that the base of hard rock is melody, right? but this is a solo listen to
watch?v=w4aEz_nr8p8&feature=fvwrel
i believe that he is more "transparent" and less "harsh" than now...
perfect drummer of course =)
i think it sounds weird because the snare seems to be crazy tuned ^^ but the drum set sound great =)
Name of band or other musicians ?
OFF THE HOOK!
Stunt drumming. He's the best above the rest
He's definitely the goal for a drummer haha.
Well, I wouldn't mind makin some "random noise" like this!!!!!
i have seen teens crying during one of his clinics( wanna be drummers) accure, skillfull, melodic (in some way)inspite the cool show off.
One of the most dedicated hard working drummer...BUT...haven't heard him play jazz...old school jazz that actually swings hehe....Derek Roddy can play jazz quite convincingly once he shared some of his JAzz stuff long time ago at Virgil's forum. I admit my statement was a bit presumptuous.
Can I have a recant card?
Ignore those fuckers. Most posers who talk about drummers so pretenciously have never touch a drum set in their entire life... the rest is people who think that a drummer who doesn't play black metal at 200bpm is not a drummer.

@court2784
amazing solo, then he proceeds into hard rock!
as a player, I don't find him very musical.
people start dying after his drum solos OH NO 7:20! shit. OAVONWEIPNGPAIWKMG
@JoeJacari Repeat after me, everyone: I will not feed the troll!
15 years ago I thought he was the best. But now I prefer to listen to more muscical drummers like Morello,Gadd,Chambers,Weckyl etc
subatomic10 i dont wanna rag on the guy. he got chops for days but i havent really heard him play anything remotely musical. he was good in loose change though.
there are other 4 trolls out there..... no se que quiero decir con eso pero queda bien para q "thumbsupéen" esta frase :)
Donati is a great durmmer, i personally don't like him thouht, but he's a great drummer
enormous techniquie, less musically minded
I think a lot of Virgil's drumming but obviously not as much as he does...
Somehow I prefer the "old" Virgil that we see in this video, thesedays he sound too mathematic
you HAVE NO idea what are you talking about
Sorry to all Weckl fans but his solos are way EASIER to listen to than Weckl's solos. Defintely more musical.
Killer drummer, flawless technique, a master...but I never hear such a horrible snare sound in my life!!
i think ur the one who is musically illiterate here...
as far as everybody's concerned... thats one hell of a monster solo...
