Just an amazing album from an amazing band. I long since got over DDY. This is Styx. I first saw them in 1978. Hell, Lawrence has been w Styx longer than Dennis. Get over it. After 14 years, this album kills it. We are lucky to get to see them in small venues today. They filled arenas when I was young.
Jeff Casmer Absolutely true. He WAS there and did found the band. However, keep in mind that they band skyrocketed only after Tommy joined the band. Would I prefer to see Dennis w Styx? Of course. I saw both the Return to Paradise and Return to the Grand Illusion tours in, I believe, the late 80’s or early 90’s. Unfortunately, that ship has sailed. Now, I get to see the band in small venues. I’m good with that.
Durian Durian. This is a good point. However, we are not comparing younger Dennis w Lawrence today. It’s true - Dennis was a hit making machine. But Tommy wrote half the Styx classics. There is bad blood, and I’m sorry for that. Of course I wish Dennis were there. Look at what Ariel Pineda did for Journey. Exactly zero hits written, but his voice is SO close to Steve’s that, with closed eyes, it can be hard to know which of the two is singing. Lawrence is a great talent trying to fill almost impossible shoes. He has been on life support as Styx’s singer for decades. It’s JY/Tommy who want him there. If they wanted Dennis, Lawrence would be history.
The fact that you are having a dialogue with yourself about Dennis clearly shows that you have bitterness toward Dennis. I like both Styx and Dennis, and did not even think about Dennis while I watched this incredible performance. Let it go, man. Or even better, enjoy both. ; )
@@gmanthatguy3937 The nice thing about being as old as I am is that I can admit when I’m wrong. You make an excellent point. Styx is only one of four bands I have seen more than 100 times. I am truly going to miss Styx when the band discontinues their journey together. I have been a fan of theirs since I graduated from high school in 1977. I started listening in 1978. Their music has seen me through some the darkest, toughest and turbulent times of my life. Even now throughout my Cancer Recovery and Cancer Watch --- when it seemed like all the forces in the universe declared on me --- their music sustains me. Tommy Shaw hits notes that some women cannot even reach or sustain. I had hoped to attend the concert in Anaheim, California this year but sadly I will not be able to attend. Maybe they will release another studio album after some much needed rest. I say it all the time and it is true. Music saved my life. Music keeps me sane. Music keeps me here. May 17th I will be 65. The irony of it all is that, if we did not live in the world of “Radio Silence”, this tune would be a big hit song for them. With the demise of radio, they have been forced to market their current selves / Album on social media and through relentless touring. They really have spanned and accommodated a lot of musical changes in their career. Really impressive.

Totally enjoying hearing some new Styx tunes! This was worth waiting for, adding to my playlist... thanks Tommy and Live Nation for sharing this video clip!
Tommy, what is your secret for maintaining the quality of your voice after all these years? You sound incredible. I love listening to you sing. You blow me away. Thank you Styx for another amazing performance of your great song.
I'd like to know what his secret is for maintaining the quality of his hair after all these years... I am a HETEROSEXUAL male... but I gotta say... Tommy has the best hair I've ever seen on a dude !!! ...Lol
Gowan's keyboard line in the 2nd verse reminds me a lot of Dennis' synth lines in "Man In The Wilderness" and ""Crystal Ball" in which he used an ARP Pro-Soloist (Songwhistle Patch).
I’ve seen the boys prob 25 times. Next show for me at the sound in Clearwater. Great venue. First time there for the boys. They’ll love it. Especially in january
I'm addictied to this entire album. But especially love this song. If you haven't listened to the whole album, give it a try. It's a complete story and so good!!!
I went to a bookstore to see Tommy supporting his Seven Zen's album. He did a short acoustic show and did some requests. After that he stayed to sign copies of his album. People had lined up for hours and were given numbers to get in line. We were told by the bookstore that Tommy would only sign copies of his new album. Tommy took the time to sign anything people brought, took pictures, and spent time talking to each family and groups of people who waited. No one in line complained and everyone got a chance to get to know him. What a class act.
The sublime performance of this, last night at Fiddlers Green in Denver...WOW...WOW...SUBLIME!!!! Hope you have that recorded. EXQUISITE PERFORMANCE BY SHAW!!!! Thank you.
I just listened to the new song by Dennis DeYOung (East of Midnight). Styx's backing vocals performed live are 10 times better than the studio backing vocals on DeYoung's album. Not to mention the lead vocals. Although Dennis' vocals were still good on "One Hundred Years From Now", his voice is starting to go. He's lost a lot of power and range. On the other hand, Shaw still sounds amazing.
I've noticed how bad Dennis's voice has deteriorated also. You are the first person to bring it though. Every time I see someone comment on a recent Dennis singing video saying *"You sound just as good as you did 30 years ago."* I can't help but think, is this person tone deaf? DeYoung sounds like he's 85 years old. But I must say, lately Tommy's had some trouble with his vocals. I hope it's just a quick fix, and he can get them back to tip top shape soon. They are working on a new studio album right now. There is a song that should be on the new one called *"Sound The Alarm,"* that might be interesting. It could easily be construed for being about the virus situation, although I believe Tommy wrote it before "Corona" began...
@@Deborahtunes I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only Dennis DeYoung fan who isn't completely tone deaf. :) Dennis recently made a couple of Covid-19 videos of him sitting at home on a piano singing "Show Me The Way" and "Best of Times" from his home. If he had done this 10 or 15 years ago, it would have sounded just like the record, but it is quite obvious that his voice no longer sounds just like the record. But hey, he is almost 74 and he is a mortal man. I'm not picking on him, but like you said it is ridiculous to read all these comments from mainly Styx-haters who say "Dennis sounds just like he did 40 years ago". But I will agree that he sounds better than most rnr singers who are in their 70's. (Listen to his latest video "East of Midnight" and it is clear he doesn't have the same power and range as he did 5 or 6 years ago.) As for Tommy's voice, I have heard a couple of recent concerts, such as the London Apr 6, 2019, where he seemed to struggle with some high notes, but at least he still has plenty of power. However, his voice sounded a lot better on the Nov 16, 2019 Long Island show. However, Shaw is 66 and sooner or later, his voice is going to start deteriorating just like DDY's voice. However, he sure sounded awesome on "The Mission" and when I last saw them in 2017.. Thanks for the update on the new Styx album and the new song. I really appreciate it.
@@edcollins9377 ~ Yes, I heard Tommy struggle to hit those high notes as well. Which is very unusual for him. I mean, originally it was one of the reasons he was hired to play in Styx. But his speaking voice sounds different too. I'm wondering if he had a sore throat at the time of that interview I saw. I certainly hope that's it's nothing more serious. As for Dennis, I've noticed his vocals starting to change ever since his 2014 concert with the orchestra. But now, it's really bad. I've listened to one of those videos you mentioned for *"Show Me The Way,"* and I had to turn it off after around the first minute it was so bad. But as you said, he is 73, (his b-day is Feb. 18,1947), and we knew he wasn't going to sound good forever. JY's voice is also beginning to go down hill. I'm wondering if he'll be doing anymore songs on this new Lp? Anyway, stay safe and healthy. Have a blessed weekend, and keep rockin'...🎸🙂🎶
When I hear this song (which I love) I always feel like it should have a nice big solo at the 3:50 spot, which Tommy kinda starts to do, but then just drops it and goes on to singing the next bit. In the old days there would have been a solo there, you can almost hear it, but maybe they feel like modern times don't need a big guitar virtuoso part. Too bad, would have made the best song on the album even better.
@@TK-ok6xj I don’t disagree. I like Gowan a lot. He’s got some awesome Styx songs. But regardless who it is, you always wanna hear the original guy sing it. I wanna hear Gowan sing gone gone gone, and I wanna hear Dennis sing come sail away
@@bigtimesully yes that would be nice but I think Dennis wanted to go in another direction with the music like mr. Roboto and Tommy Shaw didn't. But thats just me and something I read about it. Take care. 🎸
@@TK-ok6xj unfortunately that’s the story Tommy and JY try to push. Being a Dennis fanboy myself, I’ll even admit that the whole Kilroy thing was probably a mistake, and mostly Dennis’ fault, but he was still wanting to make more rock albums. He’s said in many interviews that after Kilroy he wanted to go back to the pieces of eight style with their next record. Regardless, sorry, Ik you didn’t ask for more info 😂. Thanks very much and rock on!! Take care 👍🏻
This song is so phenomenal and these guys kill it live. Also, I love Tommy Shaw, but if you hold your finger over his goatee just right, he literally looks like a 12 year old girl.
That is some high calibre cinematography for just a single live music video - has anyone heard if this is possibly from another upcoming live DVD release?
This was recorded by AXS TV during the concert. They were actually there to record REO Speedwagon for a 1 hour show on their network, which turned out great...better than being there live, somehow. Must have done this song, too.
When you recorded in that studio did you stick to old-school standards using analog technology or did you sell out to digital garbage. I don't mean to sound like a jerk but it's like digital has ruined the sound of music. I love what you did with the mission in analogwas it all analog or did you edit some digital stuff?
Agreed... Unfortunately, classic rock bands don't get the airplay anymore (except The Stones, The Mac, or McCartney). Not that Styx ever got much anyway, even during the A&M years. Which is part of the reason Styx tours as much as they do. It's the only way they will get their music out there for the fans...
This song obviously sounds great, but I feel it doesn't sound like a Styx song. It sounds like a Tommy Shaw solo song. If you add Dennis with Tommy and JY, you got a Styx song in my opinion.
Went to the concert in Moline Illinois just 3 days ago. I guarantee, no one was sitting in seats... Everyone was up on their feet and cheering.. I was front row
Yeah okay then, been to England back in the early 80's and the 90's. I was stationed in Germany in the late 70's 10 times more fun than England. Nuthin wrong with dreaming though. Ever been to the States...didn't think so...you guy's are still back in the Queens and Knights stuff....unbelievable.
The Mission is a good CD but it could have been a much better recording if Dennis DeYoung was with you guys. But that is just a dream for those who remember the early days when Styx was at their best.
Bands change man. Almost every band that has existed has had line up changes. Styx is still fantastic and relevant. Of course Styx isn't the same and that's okay. Dennis doesn't want to do epic rock records like The Mission. Had he still been with the band, this album would have never been made. I grew up on Styx and love all the albums from the Wooden Nickel era and the classic era. I'm just glad they are still making records and performing. No Dennis, no problem.
@@jondubose702 ~ 👍 Thank you, perfect response. And so very true. Especially about the part of Styx not being around anymore if Dennis had been left in. That's definitely the absolute truth...🎸🎲🎶
Dennis was trying to take the band in a direction that the rest of them didn't want to go. The thing is, Dennis was important to that classic Styx sound that we all know and love, but he changed. He had a big influence in the 72 through 78 prog rock sound they had but something happened and he took a different direction. Even if he had stayed with Styx, they would not sound like the Styx of old. I love the Styx of old with Dennis and watch those old concerts often but I know it would not have lasted. This latest line up is a great band and I'm glad to see them still performing and putting out music.
@@jondubose702 I very much disagree with you. They would have maintained their sound if they let Dennis continue to produce. His solo stuff is very much like the 70s Styx. JY and Tommy just did not want to do things professionally and creatively and work with Dennis. The band would have done a much better version of "Brave New World". The "Everything Is Cool" track, sung by Tommy, is very 70s Styx. I would bet Dennis got to finish mastering and producing that track. It is my favorite on that album. The band was not unified on that album and you can tell. Now for "The Mission", if Dennis would have been involved, that would have been a far better album. It was a good album, but not a great one. I don't really mind now that they went on without Dennis. What I do mind is how they trash Dennis every chance they get. That is very wrong and causes me to want to disrespect everything new that comes from them, like a bad taste in the mouth. Like morning breath. There whole success was because of Dennis, for the most part. I would love to hear them acknowledge that. JY has more of an ego then Tommy and he has no talent left. They need to set aside their egos.
Best vocals of any band touring today. Their vocal harmonies, are on another level. Amazing !

Styx never really left it rip, shame as Shaw and Young are capable guitarists
Cu down the road
Come to Holland please
I wonder if this song was played on any radio stations across the country it's such a good song or do we just get "radio silence".
Such a great song. Very much classic Styx. Now just think if they had Dennis on the album!!
I seen them live at the Omni in Atlanta in the early 80's. I like Dennis DeYoung too.
But his replacement is a good singer also.
@@bigtimesully you too my friend 😊 🎸
This song is so phenomenal and these guys kill it live. Also, I love Tommy Shaw, but if you hold your finger over his goatee just right, he literally looks like a 12 year old girl.
I like this live version. Easier to hear that opening guitar solo at the beginning!
Awesome - thanks for the info!
While the whole album is amazing, I think this is my favorite track.
The Band is so much better with Tommy 👍😍🙌😉👌
Relativity Weller hereRoger THAT, i'm hearing you loud and clearly, 'over'
ready for further instructions
Music of my youth but nowadays line up no worse than old one mission will be among best styx albums
At 3:18 is that Pauley Walnuts on the keyboard?
loraljohnson that is Lawrence Gowan the keyboarder who replaced Dennis DeYoung
Is it about "Cassini"?
When you recorded in that studio did you stick to old-school standards using analog technology or did you sell out to digital garbage. I don't mean to sound like a jerk but it's like digital has ruined the sound of music. I love what you did with the mission in analogwas it all analog or did you edit some digital stuff?
IF AMERICAN RADIO WAS WORTH A CRAP, THIS WOULD/COULD/SHOULD BE A #1 SONG
Agreed... Unfortunately, classic rock bands don't get the airplay anymore
(except The Stones, The Mac, or McCartney).
The vocal arrangement sounds like once ... with Dennis
Crowd look like they're attending a funeral. Would be different here in England
Went to the concert in Moline Illinois just 3 days ago. I guarantee, no one was sitting in seats... Everyone was up on their feet and cheering.. I was front row
Cathy T
I'm envious Cathy
Yeah okay then, been to England back in the early 80's and the 90's. I was stationed in Germany in the late 70's 10 times more fun than England. Nuthin wrong with dreaming though. Ever been to the States...didn't think so...you guy's are still back in the Queens and Knights stuff....unbelievable.
Stark contrast to what you're implying and the 1800s Reform Club from Around the World in 80 Days.
Too bad the tickets cost a small fortune!
NYOB NYOB and worth every penny we paid for our meet and greet plus front row seats. Go see the ddy STYX wannabes
Deceptively young looking old geezer. JY looks his age thoough.
The Mission is a good CD but it could have been a much better recording if Dennis DeYoung was with you guys. But that is just a dream for those who remember the early days when Styx was at their best.
Elliot Hass sorry Dennis DeYoung aint needed
Really good live performance of an awesome song. Too bad the audience is about as excited as a floss distributor at a dentist convention. :)
he looks like the love child of Charles Manson and Edgar Winter now.
Why not just play “Man in the Wilderness”, which is what this one is without cheesy lyrics? Awesome live delivery, though.
closer to Damn Yankes not Styx
Ouch! This is from after he transitioned into an aging Hollywood actress.
boring tune
