✅ YOUR CHECK LIST BELOW OF 5 AFTER CARE TIPS you need to know after your dog's ovariohysterectomy or spay surgery: 👇👇👇👇👇
Your pet will be soar, but dog's have a way different pain tolerance than we do and she will still try to sprint after that squirrel so number one is:
    1. Limit their activity for 10 to 14 days or 2 weeks. At least for the first week be as strick at possible to not let your dog Run, Jump, definitely no swimming, no going up stairs, and no jumping on furniture. Controlled leash walks only.
The easiest way to confine your dog is to keep them in their crate during this time and take them out 3-4x a day for short walks. If your dog is extremely energetic ask your veterinarian for extra sedatives to help keep your dog calm during the healing process. I like to use Trazadone or Gabapentin, or maybe holistic CBD or Melatonion/ Tryptophan calming chews.
    2. Keep the cone of shame on - or monitor them 24\7 not to lick at their incision or scratch it. This is SO HARD. But I believe in you!!! haha - put the cone on if you want!
    3. Check the incision 2x a day and keep it dry and clean. A normal incision may be swollen and red for the first 3 days. Normal clear oozing fluid is ok.
Not normal incision sites will be: Visible Bright red blood and excessive bleeding. Brusing around the incision site. Green Pus discharged. Removed or torn open sutures by your pet or pets activity. Bring your pet in right away for the incision to be checked if you are worried at all!
    4. Don’t miss medications. Your Veterinarian will give you Antibiotics to prevent infection and anti-inflammatory medications. Make sure to give them to your pet.
    5. Call your veterinarian whenever you are concerned or bring your dog in for them to check the incision site. Most Veterinarians will schedule a recheck 1 week after their surgery and then Sutures are removed at 14 days post - operation. I hope this video helped you feel comfortable after your pets spay to take care of them!

Watching this now cause my furbaby will soon be spayed, I'm honestly both scared and excited for her.

My dog hates the cone, so I invested in a surgery suit (like a onesie), which prevents her from licking her incision. My girl is much happier now, and she looks adorable.

I must have the only dog who loved his cone. He was so proud of that thing and loved to show off the tricks he could do with it like scooping up toys, his bone, and yes even small treats. Yes Cameron we were all impressed.

Why did my veterinarian not give pain medication? I am outraged. I am an animal care specialist for 40 years. Can I give her children's Tylenol?

My first dog Wilma managed to crash through doggy dog while wearing cone. After 10 days, cone was in sad shape. Second dog, Leta, had to be spayed 3 times before success. First time, before I got here, the tubes had been cut; she still went into heat but would not have gotten preggo. My vet started a second attempt, but found so much scarring (we believe Leta had been used for breeding) that vet thought it to risky to proceed without a second surgeon. Could not get second surgeon on short notice so vet closed her back up. Leta was still strapped to a board as I drove her to specialty vet hospital where next day 2 surgeons performed procedure correctly.

I got my dog and inflatable cone is that okay? She hasn’t licked at all.
Also, she got her surgery yesterday with pick up time 3:30pm now it’s 12:42 of the next day and I’ve given her the meds, she hasn’t been interested in eating but has been drinking a lot of water and ate her fav snack (half of an apple). Should I be concerned ?

You're probably finished with your dilemma, but it's best that you raise your concerns with this with your vet, and another vet if needed, rather than the internet, because only you and experts who have seen your dog can really judge in the end.

There’s no way you can keep a dog from running or jumping for 14 days. Good lord. I’m not crating my dog all day and night either.

They can send home some medication that doesn't make them super energetic so it heals properly. It's just so it doesn't make the stitches rip and make the healing longer or get infected

It's not bad, I just got my brindle pitbull spayed because she's six and has had too many litters and really needed it after she got bred by my neighbors dog, young dogs don't need it but if your dogs are old it won't hurt to get it done

@claynspray3024 mines only about a year. I just got her a few weeks ago very suddenly cause a relative needed to rehome her quickly or she'd be put down and she already had a spay, vaccination, and microchip appointment set which she just got back from today. Should i have protested?

No pet should be spayed or neutered unless it's a medical issue. All the things that the pet industry tells you about desexing your pet is wrong! It's illegal in Scandinavian countries to spay and neuter your pets yet they do not have over population of dogs and cats. Also, their dogs have a lower cancer rate than dogs in the United States. I have had dogs my whole life and not one was spayed or neutered and not one died of cancer. I presently have a 16 year old male dog who is fully intact and besides moving slower, he has had no health complications. It's s so sad that this is considered normal. It's slowly happening as people wake up to what science is now saying but in 10 years most pet owners will not be hurting their pet in this way.

  • @gregggiddens

Or don't get them spayed at all, your vet will tell you it's good to get them spayed because they could get breast cancer. They don't tell you that there's other cancers they're prone to get if spayed and other countless problems like hip and bone problems . Should leave them alone, or wait a couple of years to let them develop.

My husky lived almost 17 years, she was spayed. I’m sure there are many factors that go into health and longevity of life including breed.

My Staffordshire bull terrier lived to around 18 years old (she was under a year old when we rescued her and already spayed, I don't think she had her first season based on her appearance). Apparently life expectancy is 12-14, she could've gone further but she was getting croaky and wasn't having such a great time anymore, she started having accidents in the house and was deteriorating over a few months. We put her down before she got too bad, we didn't want that for her.
But yes, every dog is different, there are pros and cons to spaying and neutering, it's tricky territory to navigate. I'm taking my dog in for a spay tomorrow, it's definitely been a difficult decision.
I did lots of research and talked to the vet, I'm also not the sole owner and make decisions for her healthcare with another person, who wants her to be spayed. So after a discussion we decided to get her spayed at one year old, after her first season but before the second. I'm still not sure it was the correct choice, but there you go.
I'm doing my best, it is also what the vet recommended and he's been the vet of my family's pets since my grandmother was a young woman, so I have a certain amount of trust in him and his practice.
Sorry for the ramble, I just wanted to share. It's been on my mind! 😅
