    Kidney disease is so common especially in small breed dogs. If he’s just a grade 2, that’s good - that’s manageable. It’s out of 4 stages, so that’s good! Most animals don’t start showing symptoms until their kidneys are 75% gone, so the fact that he’s okay physically is promising. I’m a vet tech and see this so commonly. A change in diet can help (something like Science Diet K/D or Purina NF). They’re checking a urine to make sure there’s no infection - those can cause some elevations in kidney values too, so that can change what the next steps are. They’ll monitor his levels and likely his blood pressure as well. As it progresses there may be changes in medications and they may teach you how to do subcutaneous fluids at home. These guys can live with kidney disease for years which is great! PLEASE dont give into all that holistic crap - that’s what it is, crap. By all means take him to another clinic for a second opinion if you’d like but go to a reputable veterinarian. And I know you don’t know me but please feel free to message me with questions. I’ve been a certified vet tech for years and see this all the time. You’ve been such a good momma to teddy and I know it’ll continue!! Thinking for you guys!

      (Science Diet K/D or Purina NF) seems like it is mainly rice in the ingredients, how does that help with kidney disease?

      Protein bad for failing kidneys coz they can’t get rid of protein waste

    • @amandaharris421
      @amandaharris421 6 років тому

      helinille It’s lower in traditional protein sources that are hard on the kidneys and contains sources of protein that are easier for the kidneys to handle but also allows the body to maintain muscle mass. In addition, they have lower levels of sodium and phosphorus, contain fatty and amino acids and appetite stimulants to hopefully keep animals with later stages of kidney disease eating

    Wait for the urine results. It'll help confirm the diagnosis and stage. If he was a little dehydrated at the time of his blood sample, his kidney values would have been increased. The urine will show if his kidneys are able to concentrate appropriately, whether he loses protein in his urine and if he has a low grade urinary tract infection or not. It's a very common condition in older animals. He might just need a change in diet, regular blood pressure checks etc. It's manageable but not reversible, but can use things to attempt to slow progression and protect the kidneys from further damage.

    I’m so sorry about Teddy. I do work at a vet, but I’m not a doctor. Kidney failure is progressive, so you can’t change what damage has already been done, but you can slow down the progress through different treatments. They’ll probably have you change his diet in order to not damage any more cells. They might also want to administer fluids into his back, that’s something vets do a lot, and if Teddy needs it you can have extra bags of fluids at home that they might want you to inject. I wish your doctor would be more open about what is happening, it’s not fair to you to not be able to know. Anyway, I’ll be praying for you and Teddy. Love you! 💕

    Having worked in the vet field for over 8 years, if your vet is refusing to take the time to explain anything to you, it's better off finding another doctor who will take the time to explain what's happening. You're the one that's paying your vet to find out what's going on with Teddy and if they aren't providing you an adequate service, it's better to go elsewhere rather than trying to figure things out on your own. As you said, "doctor Google" won't tell you much about anything, so don't feel guilty that you haven't noticed any symptoms - you're doing the best that you can! Stay strong.

    Hey Blair! I’m a veterinary technician and have been watching your videos for years. I first wanted to say that the hospital I work at deals with cases like teddy all the time. And the biggest thing we try to stress to our pet parents is that they cannot blame themselves. As a doggie mom I know that is easier said then done. Kidney issues vary from pet to pet so don’t trust everything that Dr. Google says. With that being said, having caught it early while he is still acting his normal self should hopefully bring some comfort to you! When caught early diet changes and medication can help keep the issues at bay. Be patient (again easier said then done). Sometimes it can take some tweaking of medicine and food to find what works and that’s totally normal. I’m sending prayers for you and sweet teddy and would be happy to answer questions that you may have and offer suggestions or just support through what I’ve learned from the cases I’ve worked. It’s not something that will solve itself overnight but Teddy is very lucky to have a doggie Mom like you!!

    Blair, I am a 40 year old adult living with Kidney Failure. Stage 2 means they have got it early, so take a breath. Kidneys are weird things, their function can go up and down. I have three fur babies, 2 Maltese and a Golden Retriever so I completely understand the way you are feeling. They will be able to help Teddy with meds etc and depending on him, he will live for years with Kidney Failure. I am a Type 1
    Diabetic so Kidney Failure is common amongst Diabetics. The reason they are asking about drinking etc is that they will be making sure Teddy isn’t diabetic. If he is, it’s treatable and I know Dogs that have lived for 10 years after a diagnosis with Diabetes. They are trying to find any underlying causes for Teddy’s onset of kidney failure. There will be medicines that can help him. It absolutely DOES NOT mean Teddy is going to die soon. Yes kidney failure is a progressive disease but with the right adjustments to Teddy’s lifestyle and medication he can still live a very long and happy life. If he is diabetic his kidney condition would improve once he is on the right treatment.
    My fur babies are my life and I can completely empathise with the way you are feeling. We are here for you and Teddy Bear. If you want to know anything else at all or pick my brains please feel free to message me! Sending big love to you and Teddy Bear 🐻 xxxxx

    I'm a vet and honestly, you can't even really stage kidney failure without looking at the urine sample first. Sometimes just dehydration can cause values to be elevated, so I wouldn't worry yet. I definitely wouldn't google because there is A LOT of misinformation out there. If he is in kidney failure, it is nothing you did. As pets age, just like with people, things stop working as well as they used to. That is why we recommend bloodwork to catch things so we can manage them before they get sick. They will probably just put him on a special diet to ease the work load on his kidneys since he's otherwise feeling good. With kidney failure, prognosis is pretty variable. Some pets have it for years (especially when we catch it early), some progress a lot faster. Since he's not feeling sick, he probably won't progress and be really sick in less than 2 weeks.

      True it might be something else. I'm in a FB group with cat owners who's cats have failure and every other week there is a misdiagnosis. She just has to wait and see, but he's 8 and you're right it's nothing she did.

    Take him to another vet and just double check the results. My cat was diagnosed with a liver failure/disease in one vet, they literally told me that she won't live for long. I took her to another vet the same day and they re did all the tests, and they told me everything was fine and she's perfectly healthy. She is only 4 year old, but I continuously check her blood results since that day. Hope teddy is fine and well 💗

    I am a vet tech and have dealt with many cases of renal failure animals. The urinalysis will give more information as to if he has an infection or other cause which are falsely elevating his kidney values and more importantly how well he is concentrating his urine. You can switch to a prescription diet for kidneys and do fluid therapy at home (the vet can train you). You can also take him in for IV fluid therapy. There are many options to help prolong his quality of life with this disease. Don’t stress (easier said than done), this is a very common disease in vet med. Prayers for you and your sweet little guy!

    I’ve worked as a vet tech for 15 years & I’ve never had a vet that doesn’t explain test results thoroughly over the phone. It’s a bit concerning that you left the office w/o fully understanding his diagnosis & prognosis. Also, a urinalysis takes 10 minutes to do. I don’t understand why they didn’t do the test while you were in the office. Find out your vets plan & then I suggest you take Teddy’s test results with you for a second opinion. In my experience, pets that aren’t symptomatic of the disease tend to have a longer life expectancy than those that never have early screening & aren’t brought in until they’re having several symptoms. There are prescription kidney diets & medications that can improve kidney function & slow the progression of kidney failure.

    • @amandaharris421
      @amandaharris421 6 років тому +2

      melfish01 I agree with all of this except the urinalysis stuff. If they're doing a culture that takes days. If they send the urine out it can take 24 hours

    • @melfish01
      @melfish01 6 років тому +1

      Amanda Harris a urinalysis can be done in 10 minutes. Bottom line. Nothing to disagree about. Never talked about a culture, so that’s irrelevant.

    Hey Blair! My dog was diagnosed with kidney problems pretty early on in life, and we were able to manage it very well with a prescription diet. With that, and rechecking bloodwork regularly, she lived a great life until unfortunately we lost her to cancer at 10 years old.
    I actually work at a vets office and see dogs with kidney issues come in all the time in many stages. I definitely appreciate vets who take the time to offer senior wellnesses to make sure they catch anything that could be going on under our noses. Unfortunately we do get cases where owners don’t come in until it’s visible that their fur baby isn’t doing well only to find out that their kidneys are already shutting down. Luckily, at this stage, I think you’ll be able to manage it quite well with Teddy and I have no doubts that he’ll be a trooper for you! I hope his other labs give you some clarity and I’m keeping you guys in my thoughts ❤️

    In April of 2017 I lost my cat, Midnight, that I adopted in 2nd grade. She died two days after her 18th birthday. When Midnight was around 10 years old the vet told me she was going into kidney failure. For years we tried numerous medications & treatments but nothing would improve her kidney function. After probably two years I decided to just stop all treatments because nothing was really working & told the vet that she is a happy little girl & I am going to just let her live life for as long as she has left. For almost six years she was a super happy, cuddly, & sometimes hyper girl. We kept an eye on her kidneys & made sure she was always eating & drinking, & drink she did! As she got older she would drink more & more water which they said is totally normal. I still miss her everyday but the fact that I got 8 years with her AFTER she was diagnosed is such a gift to me. I know hearing that diagnoses is so incredibly scary & you question every decision you have ever made regarding their lives but you also can't focus on the past. You need to just focus on making every moment of their lives absolutely amazing. I'm not sure if this is helpful at all but I have been in your position & if you read this at all I just want you to remember that this isn't the ending! He could still have an amazing, long life with you! =)

    I am so sorry for the news Blair! My cat went into kidney failure almost two years ago. The vet told me that she would probably only live a few months but that we could give her IV fluids to make her more comfortable. It has been two years and she is doing amazing!! The vet said she is a miracle, so don't lose hope! Just give all the medication and change in diet he will probably need, and he will be a happy pup!

    Yorkie’s are highly susceptible to getting kidney disease. I really recommend you see a veterinary medicine specialist for an assessment & second opinion. It’s great that your general practitioner picked up on it, but a specialist will have more of an idea of prognosis and treatment plans. I am a specialist veterinary nurse in Australia and that’s what we would recommend to our patients owners. Sending you lots and lots of love xoxox

    Hey Blair, I graduate as a veterinarian in a few months time. Stage 2 is still fairly early, I wouldn't freak out, he more than likely has years to live as he sounds fairly healthy by how you're describing him. Changing him to a renal diet and making sure that's all he eats is a good idea. Also just watching out for signs he's getting sick like losing weight, vomiting, drinking more and more and getting his bloods checked on a regular basis every 6 months usually (but varies by vet's recommendation). Here's a fairly good website for you to look at www.pethealthnetwork.com/dog-health/dog-diseases-conditions-a-z/chronic-kidney-disease-what-does-kidney-failure-dogs-really . I know your dad is a doctor so if he's looking for a good website here's one aimed at vets www.iris-kidney.com/guidelines/recommendations.html

    Awe, I'm so sorry to hear about Teddy. I worked at a veterinary hospital for 7 years and I had a dog that passed away from kidney failure so I'm familiar with the disease. Kidney failure is irreversible but there are a lot of things that you can do to help Teddy and keep him as healthy as possible for as long as you can. Switching to a renal diet and restricting treats (or giving special renal diet treats) will go a LONG way. The kidneys role is to filter waste and toxins from the blood, and maintain the normal balance of fluid and minerals within the body. The less work Teddy's kidneys have to do is going to make life easier for him. Most veterinary diets work well to help kidney failure because they have reduced phosphorus and sodium, as well as added levels of essential amino acids and omega-3 fatty acids. More than anything you should be enjoying every day with Teddy. One of my favorite doctors always used to compare kidney disease to a waterfall. The water is always going to flow to the edge and then over the cliff, so you might as well take your time walking along the stream and enjoying each day you have together.

    I hope Teddy gets better!
    It's quite common in small dogs suffering from kidney's failure when they get older. Stage 2 its not that bad, you''ll have to make some changes in his diet and maybe give him some treatment, but he'll be fine for a long time. First stages (1-2) are not easy to catch, they are mostly asymptomatic (it's not that he's feeling bad or sick or anything like that, his kidneys are not working ok but they still manage to do most of their job) and of course there was nothing you could have done, running those blood tests it's the most important thing so it can be diagnosed in early stages. I had a Westie and we weren't so lucky, he was diagnosed of stage 4 (most serious of them) when he was 12 years old after been treated with some antibiotics that affected his kidneys and he didn't respond to treatment. We had to put him to sleep. But as I said, he was diagnosed too late.
    Sending lots of love!

    I’m in the veterinary field and would love to talk to you about Teddy’s condition. Definitely look into the raw diet made by a veterinary nutritionist, or a balanced home cooked diet. Companies like The Farmers Dog May be able to help you as well. Kidney failure is definitely serious, and will ultimately cause death. However, if well managed he can live for years to come. Your urinalysis will tell you where his urine specific gravity is at and that will better diagnose his kidney function. Blood work every 3 months is very important in managing this case. Usually if they are unsymptomatic, you’ve caught it early. Let me know if you’d like to discuss!

    hi Blair. I am not sure if you will see this comment but I just want to say I had a dog who lived to be 18. Twice the vet told me she was going to die and to consider putting her to sleep I said no way, if she is going to die she will die at home. Well both times she lived so I am glad I didn't listen to the vet. You know Teddy best and you know what he needs. It is hard to see them be in pain but I would say as long as he is eating, going to the bathroom regularly and is his him usual self try not to worry too much. Keeping Teddy in my prayers and hoping he gets better soon.

    Hey Blair I understand how you feel. We've been through the same thing with our senior dog Muri (he is 15). Two and a half years ago my vet told me that his kidney are not working properly and that he needs to go on a special diet. We stuck with the diet for a few months and the dog was miserable (it's diet food and you can imagen that it's not as rich as he's used to), so I swithced back to normal. He loves food and I know that he would rather eat good and live a shorter life than eat a diet food and prolong it for a few months. We went for a blood check up last year and wouldn't you know, his kidneys are the same. It's not any worse and he is 15! So don't worry that much. If he looks fine and he is eating normaly, than it is gonna be ok. He will drink more water and pee more, but that's really it. My dog is still not on any diet, I just make sure that he eats grain free food and I add oil to his food (salmon, hemp, hazelnut... just check that it is ok for dog) and I make sure that he is happy. And he still acts like he's six :D If it weren't for whites in his black fur, you wouldn't even know that he is an older gentleman :) Everything will be alright ❤

    There are 4 stages, stage 2 is where it just starts showing up in their blood which is the reason why you aren't seeing much in the way of outward symptoms. Although increased drinking is definitely one. The reality is he can't really be cured of kidney failure. It comes with old age and pretty common in a lot of dogs. The good news is there are plenty of ways with medication and diet that can help with the longevity of life. Considering his symptom is only increased drinking I am sure your vet will be able to help you with finding the right things to do for Teddy. Prayers for you and him.

    So sorry to hear about Teddy. Definitely look into a second opinion and possibly a new vet too. Wellness checks are normally twice a year at the vet office I go to because dogs age much faster than humans, so 6mos is definitely a lot of time for them. I hope it will be something very manageable and wishing Teddy more years of life with you.

    I have a Boston Terrier and she is 9. She was diagnosed with kidney disease last year at her yearly visit. You will need to change foods and treats...renal formulas are what they use. Make sure water is always available. Keep an eye out for anything strange with urination since he could get infection easier. At some point the vet may give him a medicine to drain fluid from the body (a diuretic) but that may not be right now. Just keep an eye on the lab work and urinalysis...they may set up to repeat those every 3-6 months. He will be ok...you are a good dog mama!

    Sending you positive vibes, so you can stay calm and give Teddy much love. I think it’s important that you ask for more info from your vet. You need to know what to expect. My doggie has Addison’s disease but it took weeks and thousands of dollars in test and hospital days to diagnosed and to bring him back. My vet did tell me that this is chronic and for the rest of his life he need a monthly shot. You should demand info, he is your boy. 💞

    I would get a second opinion however. With a vet that will readily give you all the information you need- I know when my dog was sick I got an information pack and my vet talked me through everything the day he was diagnosed. Praying that Ted lives a happy life- kidney failure is treatable!
    And please don’t apologize for being worried. He is your baby. I think all pet parents understand ☺️

    My dog was diagnosed with liver disease, around 9 and wasn’t really showing symptoms around 11... she declined only in the last week of her life. I would get a second opinion if your vet only tells you liver failure and not elaborate. I'm sorry Blair, it's never fun to get news like that about a pet. It sounds like you've done everything right, so please don't feel responsible. Unfortunately kidney failure is somewhat common in the little guys, and the best thing to do is to be able to catch it early so it doesn't progress any further (which you did by having his blood work done!). Your veterinarian will probably prescribe a diet change to a food that is easier for his kidneys to process, and will have you come in every few months to recheck his blood work. Properly managed, early kidney disease patients can live happily for years, so try not to worry too much! The IRIS website is a great place to get good information if you want to learn more about it.
    As an aside, I would advise you to be careful listening to some of the advice here posted about raw food and home-cooked diets. There just isn't enough quality research showing that these diets are beneficial to pets, although in some cases they have proven to be harmful. In any case, if you did choose to go with a non-traditional diet just make sure it is formulated and approved by a licensed veterinary nutritionist as dogs' dietary needs are quite specific and also quite different from ours.
    Sending good thoughts for both of you - Teddy is lucky to have a mom like you!
    Signed, a few-months-from-graduating veterinary student :)

    There are 4 stages I believe, the vet can’t say unless he checks all the enzymes and levels of his urine. My pup was diagnosed at 9 years old, stage 2 and he lived 5 more years after that. When he passed he was in the low stage 4. He actually passed because he was stung multiple times by hornets. We had to change our pups food and watch his water intake but he was very happy and we even went on a hike two weeks before he passed. I hope this helps, but if I were you just wait to see what your vet says, everyone’s pups are different, every breed reacts differently to diseases and illness. Prayer for Teddy and for you, I know our pups are our kids...my other pup Allee is a spoiled lab/chow mix and even with her issues at age 10...we still just love on her unconditionally.

    My 12 year old chihuahua, who is my baby has dealt with health problems half of his life. From having liver disease, to collapsing trachea, fluid in his lungs, and in September diagnosed with kidney stones which required emergency surgery. Knowing it would be a risk with all of his health issues, and him almost not making it after the surgery, he is back to his normal perky self. He’s on a few different medications and a special urinary dog food. Him having surgery and staying at the vet was the worst week of my life. With prayers and a good vet, Teddy will be fine! He knows how much you love him! Praying for you and your little guy! 💜

    I cried listening to you. I lost my pit bull last January 25th. He acted normal too until one day he kept trying to poop but nothing was coming out so I figured he had eaten something that had him blocked so I took him to the vet and he had a tumor in his abdomen and the vet said it was fine they could remove it so the next Morning I took him in for surgery and 2 hours later they called me and I could hear his heartbeat through the machines and they told me that the tumor is causing internal bleeding and there was nothing they could do so we had to have him put down. I never thought that would be the last time I would see him. It was really hard. I don’t want to upset you and even though Teddy is having other problems just try to prepare yourself because you never know what might happen. I’m praying for you and Teddy I hope everything goes well. If you need someone to talk to please don’t hesitate email me megan_whittington@live.com I’ve been through it so I think I could help. My fur baby was diagnosed with kidney failure in March 2016. She was put on medication dog food and fluid therapy. She was doing okay for a few months and then her weight dropped really fast. In nov 2016 we sadly had to put her to sleep. Her body started to shut down. However my sister in laws dog was also diagnosed with kidney failure 5 yrs ago and she is doing great. I’m praying for you and little Teddy. Keep up with his check ups. We did water therapy every weekend. They basically injected a hump of water under her back to keep her hydrated. She looked like a little hunchback. I hope Everything turns out okay. Hugs!

    Some vets deal with animals with kidney failure better than others. Some are really dismissive, others will do everything they can within reason. Stage 2 will probably involve a shift in his diet and maybe meds, as his kidneys aren't able to filter out waste products as well as they used to, so they drink and pee more to try to compensate and if they do get dehydrated it can make them feel sick and go off their food. There are several causes, not all of which are agreed on, and hopefully your vet will discuss these and treatments in detail with you now that more tests are being run.
    There are definitely treatments available to manage this condition.
    You know your dog best, remember that. Don't let a vet dismiss you, there's plenty out there.
    Sending hugs your way :)

    I'm so glad you're back!
    I feel you on the resolutions for healthier and more active lifestyle. About 2 years ago I was way more active, but now my job requires for me to sit all day and work on the computer (accountant..) and I can feel how much it affects me. I don't have energy, I feel tired and stressed, my back hurts, my feet are always swollen from sitting all day... So this year I made myself a promise that I will start doing light workouts at home for at least 30mins a day and I will gradually make them longer and harder. Not necessarely to have the perfect abs or butt (maybe in the future), but to feel better and to have more energy.
    I would love to see more of your workouts, what you eat in a day, etc. I think this will motivate me more and give me some ideas for exercises.
    Teddy will be okay! I believe that!
