During the dark years of the late Seventies and early Eighties, this gave quite a lot of people great comfort. To this day, it gives me who was a young boy then who didn't know or understand great comfort, though I now understand and know the reason behind it all. I hope you all can find some sense of personal peace in this music as we did then. After all, we wouldn't be here if we hadn't.
I'm compiling a list of all of the music which intimately affects me the most. This is one of those. I have listened to it for years. I'll go months without hearing it and then for no particular reason it will pop into my head, and won't go away until I have O D'd on it (or until I have drank my fill). Hard to explain the sense of beauty and pain. It does not depress me but makes me feel pain or loss mixed up with beauty and serenity.
To all the dislikes, I feel quite sad that you don't get this, this is music in its purest form, it really doesn't get any more chilled out than this, beautiful, relax, let it soak into you, sssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I dont know why everytime i hear this piece of music it makes me more sad when i'm sad, and makes me happier when i'm happy! Strange, i'm being carried away by this wonderful music!
Legend!! This hauntingly beautiful piece is one of the reasons The Deer Hunter is one of the most unforgettable movies ever, as well as an early glimpse of the brilliance of Meryl Streep, DeNiro, and Christopher Walken. Thank you!!
So true. A classic.. The young actors and their outstanding performances. I still remember the scene when Fe Niro returns from Nam and the horror and he's alone in the hotel room.. He palms his eyes because he's crying and just sinks to the floor in helplessness. So many unforgettable moments in that movie. A real masterpiece. De Niro giving us flashes of his great acting ability and improvisation. Not to mention the young charming Christopher Walken..
@blueduck5589 The original is amazing but I am not sure if you know that Stanley Myers was having dinner with John who suggested that he arrange that specific section for him to play on the guitar which he did hence the name which means a short song.
@@lorettachan-sam650I agree… it was the most touching and heartfelt moment in a film that was brimming with such moments. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
The most melancholy story-song of longing ever written; every note a word composing chapters of regrets - yet so full of hopeful inspiration that there will be a better chapter ahead. Such a gorgeous song and performance.
I don't know how many times I've listened to this, but every time the lump in my throat gets bigger and the the tears heavier, but I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought this album years ago just for John Williams' performance of Cavatina. After seeing the Deer Hunter, this piece stayed with me long after and I was so excited Williams arranged it as a solo piece. It took some time, but I eventually learned it myself and actually played it for the funeral mass of Grandmother back in '84. For me, Cavatina feels like a deep, heart felt love toward family, friends, and when I'm totally immersed into it, everyone else as well.
Congratulations on learning this piece. It is one of my life ambitions to learn this, but it seems quite difficult for one guitar. I must start to dedicate some time to it, or it will be a regret to not have achieved it. It is a beautiful piece.
Such a beautiful song🎵 Can't stop listening to it!! My cousin past away from agent orange after coming home from Vietnam. Listening to this song keeps the memory of him alive! 💜😥🙏

Its something can't be explained in words. I am listening to it over years and years and its still keeps its own value, MAGIC.
The Oud of your people has a similar sound and many of us love it as you do, brother. When the world grows tired, shabby and a bit dark we are moved by such music that such strings give us because they're part of the theme of God.
To learn this and master it took me around a total of 8weeks. Its so unorthodox that it changes your perception of music and time. Worth entangling yourself into with zero distractions.
My mother loved this piece and used to play it on the piano. It is very melodic and beautiful - and played with feeling by John Williams. Thanks for posting!

10 years ago I came across this video and fell in love with classical guitar and a new kind of music. It’s still as intense as back then. The piece, the playing and the tape distortion create a certain atmosphere that it’s hard to replicate. +Traumerei Yap So how are you getting along with this? Its actually easier than you think. It took me longer than any usual string picking tune or any guitar tune at all for that matter. But thats because this uses single to dual picking fingering and also fretting that I havent used before. Theres also some chords I have never came across which feel like he made them up just for this tune. BUT Because its a masterpiece, it doesnt make it hard to learn. Im playing it on an old metal string semi acoustic and it sounds great. Its the pace that changes all the time. I love this and Moonlight Sonata. Nice upload, I fell in love with this piece of music and this interpretation when I first saw the Deer Hunter as a 12 year old lad (1983). Brilliant film with a score worthy of such an epic film.

My, my...a lot of criticism for maestro Williams "lack of feeling" in his performance. But if you can't or won't show us then please keep your amateur opinions private and enjoy the performance of a man who can play this piece so competently. Thank you.
I couldn't agree with you more. I've been an amateur classical guitarist since I was 14 (I'm 33 now). It was John Williams's recording of Asturias that made me want to play the classical guitar. I have every CD and album he has ever made as well as every recording ever made by Julian Bream. Thankyou, moonfeet, for saying what absolutely needed to be said.

Myer composed this Cavatina (Italian for small song) for Williams. Cimino then selected it for the main theme of the movie The Deer Hunter because it is so haunting. Great piece. Great interpreter.
the deer hunter is the first fillm where i sat for the entire end credits, simply due to this song playing. when this song was played after all of the drama, the emotional turmoil from the film this song came out in such a haunting way

Thank you, John Williams. It is because of you that I first picked up a guitar and wanted to learn to play. I'm learning to play this at the moment, 33 years after wanting to learn to play. By the way, it is John Williams who came up with the solo version of this song - I think he did a bloody good job of putting two guitar parts into one. Thanks again, John for encouraging Stanley Myers to expand the song. Lovely. Thanks also for Joey, for uploading this.
So my sister asked that I play some music for her wedding; in particular she asked that I play for her as she walks down the isle. I've been leaning on this piece or Barrios' Julia Florida. What do you folks on the internet listening to this think about that idea of mine?
IDK if you're paying any mind to months old comments, but I figured I'd follow up JIC. I went with Cavatina and I'm very glad I took your advice Filbert. It was an emotional, once in a lifetime, experience. I'm not a professional who regularly plays at venues; I just play because I love it. So being able to use it in this context was more of a gift to me than it was me giving to her and my now brother in law. It made them happy, which is ofc the point, but the reception from the 300 something guests was incredibly gratifying if I may be self-indulgent. There isn't anything better I could have given of myself. If this isn't a phrase already coined then let it be mine: there is no greater gift than giving. You can't put a price on the gratitude of a little sister.
Memories of a trip in a corporate jet I did many, many years ago when I fell in love with one of the passengers at L'Bar Izbah. Trashville in Abidjan on the Ivory Coast. A Frenchman was playing Cavatina in the heat of the night when this blonde, handsome coffee grower put his arms round me whist we listened. A wonderful, wonderul peice of music to pull the heat strings and stir the memories.
Anytime I feel any sort of pain I just listen to Cavatina with John Williams playing, and the pain magically goes away. This is true music therapy.
I thought it was just me going back to the same song for the same reason…

What a great performance. I love it.
beautiful song
the deer hunter is the first fillm where i sat for the entire end credits, simply due to this song playing. when this song was played after all of the drama, the emotional turmoil from the film this song came out in such a haunting way
It seems to me that no one can play this with as much feeling as John williams,
Damien Davis watch the version with 2cellos
There were Roland Dyens alive some years ago. He could do that. Maybe much better. Peace and love :)
Geniality is something you can not buy or steel. This was an amazing performance
I don't even know why I bother scrolling down anymore...
well i've been trying to play this for years and still cant get the timing right grrrr love the tune well makes me happy!!!! thank you john williams for this beautiful tune :)
Beautiful
Thank you, John Williams. It is because of you that I first picked up a guitar and wanted to learn to play. I'm learning to play this at the moment, 33 years after wanting to learn to play. By the way, it is John Williams who came up with the solo version of this song - I think he did a bloody good job of putting two guitar parts into one. Thanks again, John for encouraging Stanley Myers to expand the song. Lovely. Thanks also for Joey, for uploading this.
I remember this from Take Hart The Gallery
Cavatina = The Deer Hunter = Nostalgia of my 20's
So my sister asked that I play some music for her wedding; in particular she asked that I play for her as she walks down the isle. I've been leaning on this piece or Barrios' Julia Florida. What do you folks on the internet listening to this think about that idea of mine?
playing this song on that special day will be a great idea! go ahead! i personally think cavatina would suit more that julia florida. best regards-
Thanks!

Amazing. Full of feeling. Timeless.
Genius!
Wonderful composition, beautifully played
John Williams is Rik Mayals long lost twin. If not hes his stunt double
