My South Philly fellow Bassist, Alphonso Johnson is by far one of the BEST Bassist that's played the instrument. Santana, Weather Report, George Duke and an awesome Solo Career. This is an incredible rendition of Cavatina. Star Studded and so beautiful......
He is not underrated at all. That phrase is way over used. He is highly rated and respected by a huge professional community and a massive fan base as well.
I saw Santana play this at Saratoga Performing Arts Center. N.Y. on 7-12-87 with Alfonso Johnson. We sat dead center approx. row 20 & the sound was amazing. The Neville Brothers opened. I have a soundboard copy of that blistering show. I've seen as much live music as anybody & much more than most. That incredible venue on a perfect July evening witnessing Carlos crafting this song live in person with Alfonso ranks among the absolute best concert experiences of my life. I've seen the Grateful Dead more times tween '81-'95 than most have been to any shows added all together. Allman Brothers 16x, Stevie Ray Vaughn 7x, Clapton 10x, Bob Marley, Neil Young 15x, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Billy Strings 39x, Santana 12x, The Who, Bonomasa, Stills, etc etc etc etc.... Those here who sit in judgment of the master, Carlos Santana, are completely ignorant & lost in their arrogance. Get over yourselves. You may prefer Williams version ok fine. That does not take anything away from Carlos' interpretation here in this performance. This is amazing. All that said, the versiom I have from '87 is just Carlos & Alfonso no sax or band. It"s slower & is seriously twice as good as this version. I'm not a tech girl but I may get a friend to load it do you can hear it. You'll agree it's truly beyond description. Peace out 🙏♥️
Alphonso is always musical in his approach and doesn't waste notes. He's always phenomenal. Carlos' limitations are clear any time you hear him follow a Wayne Shorter solo on this tour. Ndugu, Patrice and I had several discussions about this.
Great arrangement and performance of a classic piece. I loved it when Carlos threw in a couple licks at 4:36. Thanks for uploading! So many good videos on this channel.
saw CS play this solo in a concert in 1987 at Hammersmith Odeon London....was on the Freedom Tour. My first time seeing the band....needless to say wasn't the last ..... :)
@@Dusty418 on youtube somewhere is a Santana gig from 87, Oklahoma city...the Freedom tour set list and he plays Cavatina on this video ...I will try and dig out and C & P on here

This is an ok version. the best part of this is the base. Santana turned a classic tune into a whatever song. I have the highest respect for this impressing guitarist and songwriter. But this was not one of his best moments. This melody deserves to be handled with respect. Carlos played this like a boring tv theme.
Interesting that Santana tried to cover this tune. I like that he did it his own way but was super surprised that he still couldn't really cover this tune correctly on guitar note for note. Still cool that he did it his way I guess. I was expecting a bit better than this from him so that surprised me he even attempted to cover this tune. Great smoke but no cigar.
@@jm2p7 yeah. Good luck finding a guitarist in your town or city that can even play this song correctly & properly the way John Williams plays it. This song was too difficult for even Carlos Santana to play it correctly so he did it his way instead. He would even tell you that jm NOT genius.
@@jm2p7 Santana is about sounds of the guitar. He's a millionaire. You're just keyboard warrior one sentence troll. Obviously Santana doesn't suck. If you ever heard Santana's Moonflower album that is 100% about "feel" with sound techniques combined.

Pure magical performance by some the greatest musicians on this God given earth 🌏 🎶🎵🎸🥁

Not as I prefer to hear it, but a beautiful treatment nonetheless. Like Hendrix’s Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock.
Best version is John williams on acoustic guitar.

But even so, this is pretty good.
