- Join Daniel Albu as he sits down for a conversation with former Sierra On-Line artist, Rich Powell.
Rich Powell is an artist and illustrator currently living in central North Carolina. He’s well known for his work in Highlights Magazine, MAD Magazine, and many others. His syndicated cartoon panel, “Wide Open!,” won The National Cartoonist’s Society Silver Reuben in both 2021 and 2022. His line of humorous wildlife art, Callahan’s Quest for Adventure, garnered him another Silver Reuben for Product Illustration in 2013, and the Our State television show that featured him illustrating Andy Griffith’s “What It Was, Was Football” won the Emmy for Best Magazine Program at the 31st Midsouth Emmy Awards.
He began his career as a conceptual artist and art director at Sierra On-Line, a pioneer in the computer game industry, and his work appeared in such beloved titles as King’s Quest, Space Quest, and many others.

I think this is the first Sierra person you've talked to that worked on the Quest for Glory series! Some of the best games ever made. It'd be great if you could get Lori and/or Cory Cole on here to talk to!

Pretty sure Rich was kidding when he said we might have worked together on that obscure KQ-themed (board?) game. It was well before my time and this is the first I've heard of it! In any case, Rich is too humble to mention what a laugh-riot and inspiration he was, especially to us younger artists just starting in the biz. His art in particular constantly moved me to try to improve my own. And when there was a funny inside joke or anecdote going around, Rich was usually somehow involved. I well remember the obnoxious caricatures we would draw of each other (which would be considered too graphic and controversial to show around a modern office).
