So we have a Deflecting Swat countering a Fierce Guardianship countering a Fierce Guardianship countering a Force of Will countering a Seedborn Muse. Force of Will being the only counter that someone actually paid mana for. Safe to say Commander: Ikoria has had an impact on the format.
I got into a stack war with a buddy of mine whose a real Esper freak and i'm huge on Jeskai, and I was playing with my Sevinne deck (I have like 5 Jeskai decks lol and my cedh deck is Kykar!) and its my medium power control deck. I gave my graveyard flashback after someone killed my Scary Teferi which enabled him to use his 3 counters in his hand...but i had 3 counters in the grave and 2 in hand. Easy to see, he wasn't winning this counter war lol.
I don’t think that people actually have a problem with it being a compact win, it’s just that it can get old seeing which decks people pick and knowing that the Thrasios/Tymna deck running the consultation combo is going to win. This game was really great with some awesome back and forth, but still boiled down to the same predictable ending. The combo isn’t bad in cEDH, it just gets boring to watch time after time.
@@Aldrnari956 Cedh doesn't really focus on how the game ends. The interesting bits are in the interactions, and as was said in the video, it was almost 2 hours long. The game has to end sometime
Agreed. And it's not like you don't have to typically work for that line. That's what made Flash Hulk so bad - you could literally set up the win before your opponent could do even have a turn.
This was a great game! Wp by all, and a really nice final turn by Braden. Also, the editing for these games make it very easy to follow along! Keep it up.
Wow that was a crazy stack! Much appreciation to the narrator who made that complicated mess much easier to understand and to whomever had to edit that part.
Assuming that the only card we KNOW Nate had in hand at the time was mana drain I feel like he maybe should have cast that evacuation. He would loose his construct which isn't ideal but as he wasn't really set up to win the next turn anyway from the looks of it I feel like wasting mana re-casting Urza would have hurt him less than recasting their boards would hurt everyone else. Just a thought though, obviously it's hard to say without knowing what he had in hand and such. Great game and thanks for introducing me to cEDH Cast :) Keep up the great work!
I actually think the game wouldn't have been over if Zirda had landed. More thrasios activations sure but i dont think countering zirda when he had just revealed a demonic consultation was the play. Instead i think just waiting for the consult wouldve been a better move and finding another way to deal with zirda thrasios was a better option.
Great game! The way it was finally won doesnt bother me at all. That game had so much interaction and back and forth. Don't let UA-cam comments from the few that want to criticize, discourage you from putting fun cEDH games like that together for us to watch. We can watch casual jank anywhere, hard to find games like this. Keep the content coming please.
I like the oracle + consult wins. Especially when stax pieces and counter spells are in play, it requires a lot of setup and preparation when facing down three skilled opponents who are expecting it. Great video, fun game.
Normally I don't like Consultation wins, but I actually enjoyed this one. It was a grind for all players, and having just enough to barely win was a good way to end it. Also, that's one of the biggest stacks I've seen
IMO it's less that people hate consultation wins and more that your channel featured an entire season of nothing BUT consultation wins, which led to stale and repetitive content. This was a quality grindfest of a game, highly interactive, and fun to watch.
I really enjoy these videos. I also love the channel name! It's basically the opposite of my playgroup. We would definitely be called CompetitivelyCasual! We don't do the combo wins like that(no consultations, Thasa's Oracle etc), but use a lot of high synergy cards that push our decks just under competitive.
I really enjoy the content you guys put out! I do have one suggestion: maybe get more music for the background. Hearing the same song on repeat for 25 minutes is a bit much, especially if I’m watching multiple episodes back to back. Maybe it’s just because I’m a musician. Wishing you guys all the best. Keep up the great work!
If torpor orb is tapped it doesn’t affect anything It’s a very good interaction when you tap it during your turn to get effects then untap it to shut down your opponents
Thrasios+Tymna Flash-Hulk, also featuring Bomberman Combo and Consultation+Oracle combo, and sometimes even Cephalid Breakfast combo. Its generally regarded as THE best commander deck, though there are certainly several others that are very close in terms of power. It's just so explosive, consistent and resilient and resistant to combo disruption that its super hard to put down.
I would like to see you go back during the closing thoughts to discuss choices made during the big stack over seedborn! There's always lots of choices to be discussed.
That interaction is a typical day in a cedh pod when everyone or majority is running blue. Also evacuation should have been cast to reset the board. Tons of creatures
Always wondered if there was any reason to run spellseeker in the kykar deck over trinket mage if the goal is to grab divining top. Is it simply because spellseeker is a much better draw on its own apart from the combo?
So, this was a really good game. I enjoyed the back and forth and the counterspell war. At the end of the day, it was still a deck winning with Thrasios and demonic consultation. No matter how good the sequencing and play is, every game seems to come down to someone running Thrasios and drawing out the entire deck. There needs to be better variety in the decks played on this channel. I know you guys focus on high end gameplay, but it seems like Casually Competitive repeatedly proves that the cEDH meta is far too narrow right now.
I have a question to the turn from Bill in 6:43: He taps Fellwar Stone, Exotic Orchard, Shivan Reef and Ancient Tomb to cast Kykar. In the Video it is said that he pays 2 life from the Ancient Tomb. Shouldn't he pay 3 life to have a red or blue from the Shivan Reef to cast Kykar? It doesn't matter in the end.
Please make the card in the middle slightly bigger, make it take up the whole frame. Right now it’s just small enough I have to squint and turn up my resolution to read it. I love your content definitely my favorite gameplay channel :) also imo it would be super cool for you guys to try out less competitive decks. You’ve already worked with Mitch I think it’d be cool if you all used some of his cheaper decks.
Okay wouldn’t it be easier to use trinket mage instead of spell seeker. U get to tutor for the top right away instead of tutoring for it. Am I just not seeing something?
"ian cast a deflecting swat targeting bill's fierce guardianship changing the target of the counterspell to the deflecting swat" Wasn't it illegal for a spell/ability on the stack to target itself?
With the rampant lab maniac-esque wincon in the format nowadays, did anybody bother to include stifle or the mack daddy of all stifle, trickbind (one could argue nimble obs is better but 2U is > 1U) in their deck?
I see this done frequently, I never understand why someone would play mana crypt on T1 if they don't have a play to utilize this mana? Why not wait to play it on your next turn and save yourself the potential 3 life loss? I guess weigh the pros/cons of protecting it by keeping it in your hand vs protecting it from being countered on T2?
i thought about this too and I think the best reason to play it is, if you fear a t1 island mana crypt windfall play. which is not likely, but maybe worth losing 1,5 life to be save
While in this particular game it didn't really make a difference, T1 rocks into wheel is a serious risk, and Mystic Remora is a frequently played card. Trinisphere is also something to watch out for from Urza. Given these potentially very bad outcomes from waiting, the risk of an extra 3 damage is well worth it.
If you play it before - It gets around Spell Pierce effects, it doesn't get pitched if someone Wheel of Fortunes, Windfall's or Burning Inquiry's. It stops people from drawing due to Rhystic, or Remora. It gets around Trinsphere and helps to mitigate Rule of Law. It allows you to use colorless mana on your next upkeep in case you do something like Crypt, Land, Birds of Paradise - and then your opponent drops Tabernacle. And fewer counters are online. Paying on average 1.5 life vs the availability of having 2 extra mana seems like a fantastic deal. 40 Life is a huge resource, don't view it like people viewed Necro in the early days (The Magazine Inquest rated it the worst card in the set - imagine paying life for cards???).
Braden here! 2/3 opponents played wheels, 3/3 play remora, 1/3 play stax effects that make crypt harder to cast. It’s worth the average 1.5 life to me to play it early.
@@cEDHCast Makes sense, I'm just a dabbler in CEDH and Casual Competitive. A commander league I play in is probably Casual Competitive, every deck has some infinite combo in it, but games never end before turn 7. I have just as much fun forcing 4 players to saddle up with vanilla precons! :)
I don’t understand why Braden would cast Mana Crypt on turn 1 when he can’t cast anything after it. You just risk yourself losing 3 life on your next upkeep. And he did lose 3 life. Unless he keeps his opponents play Stax cards.
While it's generally a bad idea to play a Mana Crypt that you can't do anything with right away in casual Commander, in cEDH it's a very different issue because wheels, Mystic Remora and Trinisphere are all things that can and semi-frequently do happen on Turn 1. The extra two mana a turn from Mana Crypt is so valuable in a cEDH game that the minor downside of playing a Crypt when you can't use it right away is far preferable to risking your opponents either drawing cards off your Crypt or - even worse - wheeling while it's stuck in your hand.
