Exactly, Tomiki was first involved with Aikido on suggestion of Kano who developed judo - aikido was seen as the parts of juijutsu that were too dangerous for the systematised sport of judo. Tomiki was an 8th grade black belt in judo.

Having taken a few of those gedan ate's from Nariyama Sensei as a young man I can tell you they leave a mark.
