  • Welcome to this PMDG 777 Autoland Tutorial video.
    We are flying a Cat IIIb ILS approach on runway 18R at Amsterdam Schipol (EHAM) airport. This is only a practice Cat IIIb approach since the weather is relatively good. We will see how the aircraft basically flares and lands itself.
    As mentioned in the video, these are the various "autoland" approaches requirements in low visibility operations:
    - Cat IIIb = Decision Height 0, RVR 75 metres
    - Cat IIIa = Decision height 50 ft Radio, RVR 200 metres
    - Cat II = Decision Height 100 ft Radio, RVR 300-350 metres
    The minima are therefore referenced to the radio altimeter and the Minimums ("Mins") knob on the EFIS Panel set to Radio (unlike a cat I ILS approach).

    Ask for landing checklist when final landing flaps are set, so that the checklist is directly completed (otherwise you are halfway the checklist and have to wait for the flaps to be set in landing position)

    Hi Captain, i have a feeling that although i am setting the auto break for landing (position 2,3 or even 4) when i touchdown the auto brake doesn't work, all the breaking is because of the reverse throttle and usually the runway is not enough....even in big airports like KLAX or KJFK... Am I doing something wrong? Apart from the auto break set do i need to do something more?

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  4 роки тому

      It is strange because it should work. When you touch down do you have any EICAS messages popping up? If you touch the brakes, then the autobrake system is disarmed and no longer works.

      Regarding your issue with the EGPWS, I came across it recently with the American Airlines livery.
      IIRC you need to go into the options and find "minimum runway length" or something similar. Change it to a smaller value (let's say 7500 feet). It should get rid of the spurious GPWS warning.

    Did the localizer and glideslope automatically capture because you were flying an auto land or does it automatically capture even if you fly a manual landing

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  5 років тому

      Simply because the autopilot is engaged and the approach mode is armed and then engages with LOC and GS at the appropriate time. Autoland or manual landing does not matter. The status of the autopilot and approach mode is what matters, if that makes sense.

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  5 років тому +1

      Good question. I would not say it is compulsory. With LAND 2, you cannot do a cat IIIB approach anymore, but you can still decide at 50 feet (cat IIIA approach) and do an autoland. With 200 metres or more visibility, it is easier to monitor the roll out function. If it does not work properly, then disconnect.

      The FMC needs to be programmed for the ILS approach you are flying. By selecting the ILS approach, the ILS frequency will automatically be tuned. You can check that frequency in the NAV RAD page of the FMC.

    Hi, I'm new to FSX and the PMDG 777ER
    I tried this before and it worked but why does it sometimes say "No Autoland" on my EICAS and PFD midway landing. The ILS signal gets captured and the plane aligns itself on the runway but says "No Autoland" when I'm about to touch the runway. It happens often when I set my FSX weather to major thunderstorms. May I know why it does this?

      If you are definitely on the ILS with SPD LOC and GS green, and the AP engaged, you should not get NO AUTOLAND as it means there is a failure of the autopilot redundancy system. If you have random failures enabled, then the sim may "create" that issue with the autopilot.

      +Captain Nav thank you Captain. 0 feet so no need to see a light on the runway and the landing is mandatory ?

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  8 років тому

      That is correct, no need to see a light... in 75 metres, all you see is one light anyway. You decide whether you land at 200 feet radio altitude (the alert height). If you got one of the four failures (no autoland, speedbrakes, autopilot, autothrottle) I mentioned in the video below the alert height, then you have to go around, unless you are visual and can take over manually, of course. So unless you have one of the four failures mentioned above, then you rely entirely on the aircraft to land in virtually zero visibility.

    Do you have any advice?
    PS: I love your videos, they teach a lot.
    PSS: Is -500ft/min considered a 'smooth landing'?

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  4 роки тому +1

      If you can't control the aircraft with the joystick anymore for landing, then maybe you can do an autoland (for any ILS approach in the sim), at least for the moment. Then, whenever possible, I guess you may have to replace the joystick.
      500 feet per minute for the landing is a little bit "firm" but no worries it is only a simulator and you don't have a chief pilot to report to. 😉👍

I know F1 and F2 keys activate the reversers. I hit he F2 key and usually hold it until 60 knots before I hit F1 to shut them down. I see the indicators on the upper EICAS showing green and yellow REV. But I don't know what it is telling me. I kind of want to understand the mechanic of the reversers and if I should be holding them wide open with F2 key.

      +XBOXORANGEJUICE RVR stands for runway visual range and is basically the visibility worked out by a machine, not a human observer. No, as you said, at 60 kts, you close the reversers. • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  4 роки тому

      You have to press the autopilot disengage button twice on the control column... I suggest you set up a shortcut on your keyboard or joystick for that, it will make things easier...

    Is the 777 certified to do CAT III Autoland if using RNAV for landing guidance? If not what CAT is it certified?

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  6 років тому

      +Gavin Parmar No RNAV won't give the 777 guidance to autoland. Only an ILS can help wit the autoland feature.

    throttle cut is the same as idle?

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  7 років тому

      +Dane Jones I am not too familiar with that term, but I would imagine so. Basically the thrust is brought to a minimum, or idle.

    • @pointbreak9101
      @pointbreak9101 7 років тому +1

      Captain Nav thanks. last question. you do manually turn thrust into idle or it is automatic?

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  7 років тому +1

      +Dane Jones If the autothrottle is engaged, then thrust comes back to idle automatically.

    What Is Baro And Radio Altitude?

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  3 роки тому +2

      Baro is based on the altimeter ("atmospheric pressure sensor") and radio is based on the radio altimeter (radio signal)👍

      Baro is sea level, radio is ground

    Hi, can you help me with one thing about this plane? Every time when I'm landing comes about 800ft terrain warning and pull up warning. I think my altimeter is set ok but every landing I got this warnings...

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  8 років тому

      +DKJamez You should not get any warnings like that....where are you trying to land? Is the gear down and flaps 30?

    • @befuriousDK
      @befuriousDK 8 років тому

      Yes, I do everytime ILS land with flaps 30 with 146/150knots...And Landing checlist as well...

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  8 років тому

      +DKJamez Is it the "pull up" warning you get? What is your rate of descent before landing?

    • @befuriousDK
      @befuriousDK 8 років тому

      I have two warnings, first is of terraine, this starts about 800ft and then comes "pull up" warning. My rate of descent is normal on ILS. Flaps 30, speed 140-150knots...

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  8 років тому

      +DKJamez This is really weird because on the approach, you would eventually get EGPWS terrain warnings/pull up warnings if not configured properly or having a high rate of descent... it is not the case here, so not sure what the problem is....I suggest you contact PMDG support, they might be able to help.

    Hello why you don't use autoland always in real life?

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  6 років тому +5

      +Gizli Hesap I guess we don't always autoland for 3 main reasons: To practice landings and stay proficient (we can't autoland off an RNAV approach, for example), an autoland ideally needs the ILS area around the runway to be protected to prevent signal interference (which is normally not the case), and remember that a lot of ILS approaches are only Cat I and not suitable for an autoland.
