This song is kind of a mockery. They wrote it as an answer to American jazz musicians who use to say that the bossa-nova chords were out of tune, back in the sixties, when bossa-nova was a huge trend in the US and jazz was getting kind of forgotten. I think Tom Jobim is the original composer.
Fui a um show de João Gilberto - o único a que fui - no final dos anos 90. Já gostava dele, tinha alguns discos, mas queria ver de perto, ao vivo, quem era aquele sujeito e porque era tão celebrado. Para resumir algo que poderia ser mais longo: ele parecia ter três cérebros, um para tocar o violão e imprimir a um instrumento de cordas o poder da percussão e não somente um suporte para a música a ser cantada; outro cérebro para cantar a música, eventualmente em uma melodia e uma direção conectada com o violão, mas, de algum maneira, independente, e um terceiro cérebro para reger isso à distância, enquanto sorria para o público - e pra si mesmo. Ele tocava e cantava com o corpo todo. Controlava o que saía pela boca e como tocava o violão com os braços, as mãos, os dedos, mas se contorcia sutilmente e balançava uma perna e eventualmente os pés. Com fama de mal-humorado, naquela noite estava feliz e radiante. Sorriu, contou histórias, pediu para o público cantar enquanto, calado, acompanhava a platéia com o violão. O show se estendeu por quase 3 horas, um espanto! Um artista absoluto.

Actually are not samba supporters who disliked bossa nova. He sings about Brazil elite, rich people who hate samba then hated at the time bossa nova who comes from samba. And samba comes from poor people, from favelas, less valued music for those people...

Fabulous... João Gilberto is one of the most important artists of brazilian music ever. Bossa Nova has amazing lyrics an melodies. A lot of people here in Brazil didn't understand what João Gilberto did at that moment and said he sang out of tune. I think this song is a little about that. Grazie.
Good songwriter but definitely a very polemic figure in that scene.
Have you realized that he sings all the music untuned but the chords follow his untuned melody? That’s the genius joke about this song.
