STAN GETZ and JOAO GILBERTO - CORCOVADO (Quiet nights of quiet stars) REACTION
#stangetz
#joaogilberto
#bosanova
Back in the mid-1960s, I listened to this on my car ('57 a mint, two-tone, grey and white Pontiac Star Chief) radio when I cruised La Jolla Blvd. and El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego on a sultry sub-tropical summer evening. I rolled the windows down and felt a slow warm breeze with palm trees lining the street. I don't think I realized how good I had it.
This came out when I was 8. We had just moved from Virginia to LA. My parents played this all summer long. It remains the soundtrack of the summer of my life. It always ‘takes me back there’, my life was new, exciting, sunny, and I didn’t have a care in the world.
Great selection Harri! There is a group in Brazil "Choro das tres" consisting of 3 immensely talented instrumentalist sisters. Guitar, clarinet, flute, Brazil personified. Check them out.
I read that the reason they played and sang so soft is because musicians who lived in those high rise apartments in Rio tried not to bother their nextdoor neighbors..And that started the bossa nova genre
One of my top 10 favourite albums ever ! Perfection start to finish. Thank you.
It definitely passes the stranded island test
Man, I feel completely relaxed now.
2:18 "now you guys know what they listen to in heaven." That says it all.
Astrud was Joao's wife. Not a professional singer. But they brought her in to do the English version of the song "The Girl From Ipanema" because Joao's English wasn't very good. And here she opens this song. Joao's voice is so smooth. And Getz... WOW. That sax is absolute heaven. I love saxophone, and I love bossa nova and samba. Mmmm... this kind of music is like a beautiful sunset spilling changing colors along the horizon, like the rhythm of gentle surf, like a warm breeze caressing your face, like tasting chocolate for the first time, like rocking in a hammock on a lazy afternoon, or like someone you love tracing a heart on your arm. Feeling good, not wanting the moment to pass, never wanting the bliss to end.
This is one of my all time favorite albums. I still get chills listening. Excellent choice.
I only wish that Astrud would have sung a little more of a portion of this song.
It is the bossa nova. And Joao is it’s king
And Tom Jobim.
@@kentclark6420 Love me some Jobim
This is bossa nova and its very natural
I have a couple from Astrud Gilberto for you, besides the suggested and famous song, 'The Girl from Ipanema', try 'Bim Bom' and 'Agua de Beber'.
Thank you for this request Craig. This is simply heavenly, musical sophistication! I'm a huge lover of this genre. - Brooklyn Mike
Body and Soul by Stan Getz is Heaven's music. Yes same people on Girl from Ipanema including Stan Getz
If I remember correctly, it was Miles Davis who said "Joao Gilberto would sound amazing just reading a newspaper".
Stan Getz is my favorite saxophonist. When he blows the sax the tone comes from his soul. I got to see him in New York the whole place had goose bumps from his sax.
I listened to this all through college. It's gorgeous. Antonio Carlos Jobim and Stan Getz is a good place to look for more. Brazil was hot.
Stan Getz, a master, complements the Gilbertos so masterfully, we'll never hear anything like this ever again. I was oh so fortunate to hear this music, these musicians in the 60s.
How about Astrud Gilberto singing “So Nice”? That is some more beautiful Bossa Nova music 🎶 Smooth as silk 😌
João Gilberto is definetely a genius with harmony
If you listen to more Stan Getz, you will be giving many more standing ovations. After listening to this you can understand why Mr Getz was called, The Sound.
oh my god....please, react to more Joao Gilberto songs! hes a genius!
so smooth..
react to CHEGA DE SAUDADE
please
you will love this man
This is fantastic. Thank you for this. There is also a wonderful duet by Frank Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim singing Girl From Ipanema that I know you would love. Would love to see your reaction to that. 😊👏
Coolest of the cool. Really creates a mood
I'll have a martini with this song please.
If you want to hear a beautiful Duet then listen to George Michael and Astrud Gilberto doing Desafinado. What a pair and that saxophone is icing on the cake.
The lady singer is Astrud Gilberto, Joao’s Wife and yes they did Girl form Ipanema, Stan Getz on the sax, yes is ultra smooth stuff!
Yes , these are the original folks that did 'The Girl from Ipanema'.
Another good one in this vein is Astrud Gilberto, Joao Gilberto, Stan Getz 'Aguas de Marco.' Many dozens of covers of this, but IMO the best version, Astrud nails it- ua-cam.com/video/Wpa_oHFQxHI/v-deo.html
Samba and bossa nova is one of my very favorite music forms 😍
I love your patrons for suggesting music we don't hear everyday! Thank you Harri. You are such a kind man I think. (Arkansas, USA)
I've heard so many different versions of this song, but this is marvellous!! So mellow and heavenly. I also love the VERY under rated Doris Day version, which I recommend to your viewers. Thanks Harri ... 🤎
This is so smooth and absolutely delightful.
5:25 is exactly the rythmic groove of Girl from Ipameda
When I go to the beautiful island São Sebastião, north coast of São Paulo, I sit next to a rock on Julião beach and listen to this song... great weather for... very good...
Time to dig into the Antonio Carlos Jobim songbook.
effff yeahhhhhhh
First of all I want to thank you for recognizing and reviewing such a wonderful variety of old masterworks. When this album came out in the late 60s I was in my late teens. We thought it was the sexiest music ever. There are so many stunning Brazilian musicians in this genre, one in particular you should check out is singer Maria Bethania. Classic and beautiful. Love your reviews and channel.
This patron of yours kows who is Elis Regina for shure. You're going to be amazed with her jazzy style and one voice totally unique ☯️✌
This is relaxed, feel good, music. Fantastic! 🎷🎷🎶🎶👍💕💕
What a delight… takes me away every time I listen to it!!
You got hit by the GETZ effect!
Good ear...it's the same pair of Stan Getz paired with Astrud Gilberto (with Joao as well)
Beautiful song. This songs is heaven ❤
A nice album is "Stan Getz Meets Gerry Mulligan". You might like it.
Herbie Mann that's the flutist that covered it : Herbie Mann: A renowned jazz flutist, Herbie Mann recorded a version of "Corcovado" that captures the essence of the bossa nova style.
Stan Getz i think that's the "Take 5" composer/interpret ...yes indeed it is, so next i'll play "Stan Getz & Arthur Fiedler at Tanglewood". which must be an important venue since many played there. maybe an annual festival.
I recommend : Corcovado -- by Cannonball Adderley from his 1962 release 'Cannonball's Bossa Nova' . That's the best version ever made.
Getz was one of the greatest Jazz saxophonists - unfortunately quite a messed up person - but his playing was heavenly.
Link to good Maria Bethania collection…. She became very popular in the 70’s.
It does, indeed, sound like Bossa Nova. Not sure if it is, but it sounds like it. Great tune! Nice goin', Craig & Harri!!
Yes, Is the same composer from “Girl from Ipanema”. It’s from Tom Jobim.
My favorite melody of all time. A million great melodies are below it. This one is IT for me.
On par with this is Nat King Coles Stardust written by a close friends great grandfather Mitchell Parish
If you like this, ck out their daughter Bebel Gilberto music.
Check out “So ;Nice” and. “ Non stop to Brazil”
a long time i heard somewhere someone say : " brazil is a portugal who decided to be happy", i like to think that's true =)
It is wonderfull to see the joy of him listem to this amazing song.
Yes, this is indeed by the same musicians and singers that did the definitive version of The Girl From Ipanema. In fact both songs come from the same album.
With Bossa Nova it doesn’t matter if you don’t understand Portuguese, the music is just so beautiful.
thank you for your honest reaction man, this song is wonderful
Corcovado is the mountain peak in Rio De Janeiro with the huge statue of Jesus on top.
If this track got any cooler it would freeze the stylus to the vinyl! lol
Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful!!
Yes, playing this song could get anyone a free pass to nirvana in the afterlife.
More jazz please! 30s to 70s preferably
just a little tiny tiny slice of heaven 🎸💯
One of the best easy listening tunes is "Moonglow & The Theme From Picnic" by Morris Stoloff.
That is one of the most beautiful mash-up of songs ever created. There is a clip on You Tube of that song along with the scene from the movie "Picnic" where it was played that is just fantastic.
Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano and wrote the tune.
I've just seen that Gary Brooker,, composer, singer and keyboard player of Procol Harum has died. I feel gutted by that. Goodnight Gary.
THANKS REAJA TOM JOBIM E FRANK SINATRA
Paul Horn or James Galway or Moe Koffman have a flute cover of that song, well, so do a few dozen great singers but that's from the source or close to it
"Corcovado," also known as "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars," is a bossa nova song composed by Brazilian musician Antonio Carlos Jobim. It has been covered by various artists over the years. In your list of names, none of the mentioned musicians (Paul Horn, James Galway, or Moe Koffman) are widely known for covering "Corcovado." However, it's worth noting that "Corcovado" has been covered by numerous artists from various genres.
Some well-known artists who have covered "Corcovado" include:
Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto (Their version with Jobim is one of the most famous renditions.)
Frank Sinatra
Diana Krall
Ella Fitzgerald
Sarah Vaughan
If you're looking for a specific cover by Paul Horn, James Galway, or Moe Koffman, it's possible that they have covered the song as well, but their versions might not be as widely recognized as those by the artists mentioned above.
Hello Harri. Please react to Milkcow Blues Boogie (1955) by Elvis. He took an ordinary country song and changed it to a rockin' rockabilly tune! This man is phenomenal! 🎶🆒️💃
This song gives me chills
Same people same album bra!
Antonio Jobim ❤❤❤
I love this man! Try ‘Girl From Ipamema’✌🏻✨
yes
Perfection.
?????
I feel you bro
Stan Getz also played on Dave Brubeck "Take 5" original song.
Are you sure you’re not thinking of Paul Desmond?
@@billr3724 He must be thinking of Paul.
Jazz at the pawn shop.
Limehouse blue's 💙
A real treat. You will love it.
I commented before I heard your reaction. My bad, I should have known that you would make the connection.✌🏻✨
The Girl From Ipanema in English sung by Jaoa’s wife Astrud was a huge hit, so nice to hear this bossa nova beat again, and Stan Getz is utterly amazing as is Joao Gilberto - makes you want to dance a slow dance in a club or under the stars 🌟 💖🥂💎
When I hear this I'm in a dimly lit, smokey night club somewhere below street level.
This is bossa bova jazz. So exotic yet so sophisticated. Just mix that martini extra dry (just wave a bottle of vermouth over it) sit back, kick off those loafers, loosen that tie, and let the sounds transport you to another planet with everlasting sunset, never ending warm breezes, and your soul mate next to you.
Great song, especially the opening lyrics
Sinatra did an entire album with Jobim. If you like Bossa Nova you might want to check it out.
Ok. If you enjoyed this you will love this most fantastic voice that Brazil ever produced. She's ELIS REGINA (not alive anymore) I compare her to a janis Joplin or a Nina Simone because of her grip and jazzy soul. Don't need to understand a word because her voice is like a sax or percussion. To many songs to recommend one. Try something live in the USA with a big band ☯️✌ stay safe
I love Astrud Gilberto's voice, too.
Easy Listening Music. Very Nice!
I would like your reaction in Brazil to corcovado
