- This is just a little something (with audio examples at the end) I really didn't see much of in full on all 3 SSL controllers, the UF8, the UC1 & UF1 including the SSL 12 audio interface at the same time. I thought some might be interested in a video about all 4 units working together. This will probably be the last video regarding the SSL Hardware. I think the days of every other DAW being the neglected second cousin of ProTools is over, which is awesome. I have a little Faderport 8 and I love working in ableton with it but the SSL ecosystem lifts the entire controller game to new levels. Anyway, keep up the good work man, it s helping us fella musicians :)

I have a couple of the SSL2+ interfaces.
I have a Ton of other stuff as well and damn sure dont Need any more conversion.
However, the SSL12 looks dope in its SSL360 implementation.
That said, I dont feel like you focused on That part of it. How the software makes it act like an Analog Console.
Lastly, for now...
(And bear with me)
SSL 360 is the "Sidecar" app for the SSL ecosystem, like Softube's O.S.D. for Console 1, and Console for UAD. (They all have something similar).
Console 1 gave you a Channel Strips that let you Fly through a mix with your fingers, which is the obvious part, but the evolution of OSD over the years gets slept on for the X-Ray vision insight it gives you over each individual channel And over buckets of 20 channels at a time. That takes those Analog Consoles being emulated Way beyond what you get working on the "real" desk.
So while its designed to "mix with your hands, not with your eyes", I highly suggest a dedicated monitor primarily for OSD, and a 16-inch 1920x1080 just above the Controller is a perfect fit.
(Then in Reaper, I have the Inserts Window fullscreen there as well, and it follows the selected track showing All of the plugins on any selected track, behinf the OSD. The 20 Console 1 select track navigation buttons therefore control Everything, not just C1, on a dedicated "Channel Strip Display".
Then came SSL360...
Like C1, you place it on every channel in the DAW, and the Sidecar can access those remotely. Dope.
However, while every UA-camr saw it as the Console 1 killer, A) you only get 1 plugin channel strip (now 2) with the SSL, C1 has 8, but those 8 are configurable in 6-parts, and can be configured into hundreds of different Frankenstien Consoles. B) The SSL 360 app does Not give you the Modern RTAs and metering options, and DAW Control that Console 1 has.
However, what SSL360 did bring to the table, that is truly a game changer, is the "Plugin Mixer" being layed out like an Actual SSL Console, with every channel strip side-by-side, and the ability to glance over and see All of the settings right next to each other. That global overview is whats been missing inside of Every DAW mixer since the beginning (except for Reason!).
In addition to that, you can move your mouse over to any knob that your ears tell you to without opening and closing any windows. Its all right there!
Now, because of my Console 1 display setup above, I obviously put 360 on there, and grabbed the mouse...
But, what I didnt mention is that that 16-inch monitor is an Artist Pen Display, which means that I have a Stylus in my right hand, and with the pen can precisely adjust Every Knob on the SSL.
Dope A.F.
So, if you followed all of that!
1) The 16-inch is great for C1 and Plugin windows, but is really a bit small for 360.
I'm thinking a 24-inch 3820x2160 will be big enough for laying out the whole Console yet small enough to be right in front of me at arms reach.
2) While the Pen Tablet Display is dope, I wanna experiment with a Multi-Touch Display instead to see if using my fingers can be as precise on the knobs. If you were using the SSL 360 Faders (so far I am not) then fingers on Touchscreen Faders works amazingly well. So we'll see. (Though not right away, i have too much going on this summer)
3) The cost of these displays has dramatically decreased, and there Lots of options now. If you think of these displays as Extensions of your other hardware, and that they provide as much additional functionality as the other stuff on your desk, just pretend that there's an SSL logo on the bottom.
To beat this horse a bit more, as a dedicated Display, these provide invaluable insight for relatively little money.
But Pen and Touch Displays are also Tactile Input Devices, that change the way you do what you do.

And after saying all that, I forgot to say…
Console 1 and SSL360 don’t have to compete, but Compliment each other!
I have a template with 64-channels, all with Console 1, SSL Channel Strip 2, and Izotope Neutron on every channel.
These ALL are “smart” plugins with I.P.C. (Inter Plugin Communication) that all allow each channel to talk to their “Mothership”.
(Each channel also has a Hardware Insert into an Analog Console/patchbay so I can choose flavors in the mix)
-The SSL has an old school console workflow, that can insert my actual console, and Quickly setup a mix all matching EQs and dynamics, and immediately gets that 3D soundstage that usually gets flattened out in the box.
-The Console 1 can do that, has totally different flavors to choose from, and is infinitely more flexible. For instance, as standard I’ve replaced the Shape section Gate with the full Softube Transient Shaper, on every track! That, plus the Drive & Character, across the entire mix, are complete game changers. There’s no Console that can do all of that with so much Speed and Control.
-The iZotope ecosystem (Neutron, Nectar, and Ozone, + Insight) is completely surgical and precision, but don’t sleep on their Tone shaping tools either.
And while I’m divulging the secret sauce, every channel also has Bluecat Audio Patchwork in one insert slot, that turns it into 64 Super Inserts! If you don’t know, now you’re about to know, some shit you’ll never un-know.

-When the UF1 is in "Plug-in Mixer" mode it will follow along with the UC1. Selecting "DAW mode" allows it to act independently. Your choice at a press of a button.
I've also looked into the large touch screen displays and decided after doing research, it's a little clunky and not was precise as a dedicated knob or button and used a programmable software wrapper to make it all work which I'm not a fan of so look out for that while looking into them.
Well done video - good production values. The audio quality is fine. Good easy style of talking. I have a Big Six, UF8, UC1, UF1, SSL1, Fusion and Bus+. As you describe, all of the SSL equipment plays nicely together. However, you should have re-recorded the section where you consistently confuse the UF8, UC1 and UF1.

LOL...I'm not sure if you're able to see in my videos but I'm actually using a Trackball with my right hand and a Magic Trackpad with my left hand all at the same time.
This way I can complete 2 mouse movements at once i.e "scroll & zoom", "Click & swipe", the use of "2, 3&4 finger gestures" (on a Mac) that you can't do with a mouse. I feel you can get things done faster if you're using 2 hands instead of one...idk, it's just the way my nerd brain 🤓 works. LOL

@@mercmixx I didn't notice the trackpad until you mentioned it, I'm personally not a big fan of trackpads but using one in addition of a trackball/mouse is a really clever idea I haven't seen many people do before and something I might have to try sometime. Double props for that.
Also have to admit I didn't know that the solid state logic controllers were a thing until I saw this video. I was fooled into thinking your video was about logic for macOS but was pleasantly surprised to see it being a video about some hardware that you can use with ableton live instead.
I was also searching for novation launchpad videos when I found yours and I guess the youtube algorithm thought your ableton push was a close enough fit. 😂
@@mercmixxWell my Nerd Brain agrees! I’ve had every Trackpad, Trackball, Mouse, Magic-mouse, Gaming-mouse, Pen Tablet, all of that….
I have the same Wireless Kensington Expert in my right, but actually prefer the lower end Orbit for how it flows. Only two buttons and a smaller trackball, both of which should suck, but actually make it faster.
Also, the scroll ring is somehow better (and don’t get me started on my Slim Blades goofy ass scroll ring).
In my left is the OG Apple Trackpad, I bought a few years ago and I’m down to one that still works perfectly, so I think you just convinced me to upgrade.
HOWEVER, one of the things I noticed that you didn’t touch, was the Foot Switches.
I’ve been using a Foot Switch for Play/Pause since the 90’s.
When tracking I also use them for Punches and Talkback.
You gotta get you Feet in the game Bruh!
It looks like the SSL’s have TWO, I’m really curious how programmable they are.
LOL...Yo! That orbit was my sh!t back in the day, the speed at which you could fly around the screen was crazy. I eventually got the bigger Expert one because of the Orbit (multi-buttons and all) and you're not alone on the fact that the scroll ring on this thing is straight trash. Lol that's crazy.
As far as foot switches go...I thought about getting one but I'd feel that my foot would have to be on the switch, in one place, at all times so that's why I never got one. I can see me getting one if I was a guitarist or keyboard player needing to hit record all the time. Do you play or you just us it at your desk?
@@mercmixx Well A) the footswitch doesnt Replace anything it just adds an alternative. So if you say play/pause, you can still hit the space bar or transport control buttons.
Also, if you had a 20-foot SSL 9000K, you can drop 2, 3, 4, more footswitches and just make a splitter for them. All they do is close a contact (usually) so any one of them can trigger the function.
Ive also wired up in one studio basically a Footswitch Patchbay, with handheld buttons as well, at the board and behind at the Producers desk, so that multiple people can press the Talkback.
Footswitch jacks are really just Hardwired Remote Control jacks to be used as you require.

A really useful video for me bruv as I’ve spent the past couple days trying to decide whether to go for the SSL family you’re working with here, or the Avid S1/Dock which although it ain’t necessary, looks weird without an iPad which I don’t currently own.
I like the modularity with these and I understand the 360 link is a game-changer now that it can control any VST3 plugin.
I also want a controller(s) that can work with other DAWs for a future-proofing perspective - sounds like SSL has that covered too…
I think you pretty much got it. The software & controls rock solid, made out of metal, future proofed, perfect interface between you and your DAW and they just work.

BTW, I had to go do some bits so I don’t know whether you’ll mention this later on, but I’ve just found out that the 360 link can work with a just touchscreen and the UF1 can work with it too!

Gotcha…just be aware and check the “UC1/Plug-in Mixer” compatibility chart ( solidstatelogic.com/products/ssl-360 ) because by the way Protools and Logic are designed, those two DAWs don’t offer all the bells and whistles like all the other DAWs do including Reaper (the chart only applies to the UC1/Plug-in Mixer).
Also If you do Electronic Music I’d seriously recommend Ableton Live…my weapon of choice.
We almost have the same setup; except I produce on an 85" OLED on the wall and I use a pair of JTR Triple 8's and a pair of Focal Trio11's monitors. I simply cannot work very well without my UF8s and my UC1. I'm not knocking the UF1 but I find myself basically using it for metering and 2 Bus volume control. I use Push 2, Maschine Mk3, Roland Fantom 8 and Integra 7 for actual production, but other than that essentially the same setup. Great video to see how other people use their SSL controllers.

…but for me, the UF1 is the final piece and if you took it away, it’ll always be missing that something. Also now we got that “360 link” for the UC1 which makes the setup even more of a beast.

LOL, naw not really. It's almost like using a microwave, TV remote or you phone. Would you rather use a mouse or your finger for those things? You get used to it fairly quickly, I'd say within a day of mixing and navigating you've got it down. The first time hearing everything it could do all at once may be a little over whelming but it's pretty straight forward. Also remember you don't need you use all the short cuts at in the beginning, I started using the main features and then found myself looking for more and more short cuts overtime like "Cut, Copy & Paste" if you can believe it. Sometimes you'll need the mouse but when you don't...you'll appreciate the speed of things.

awesome video man thanks for putting the effort! Quick question about setup: how are you hooking all the hardware together? Are you using a usb hub or something? I'm on a mac as well and sometimes the hubs don't seem to work properly. cheers!

Yeah they're hooked up with USB cables going to a Dock and/or Hub. The SSL units have a Pass-thru feature (Daisy Chain) but it won't work in all cases because of the USB protocols saying that you can only go to one (usually high powered) device after certain hubs and/or docks. I'd always invest in a quality powered "Dock" 1st, then add other powdered hubs or docks as needed. There's a commenter that said he's using the thru feature but I think he's going from his computer straight to a SSL device then to another SSL Device...No hubs or docks in between.
The Dock I'm using is an:
-OWC 11-Port Thunderbolt Dock (4 Thunderbolt ports)
The Hub I'm using is a:
-CalDigit Thunderbolt 4 Element Hub(4 Thunderbolt ports)
FYi...They both come with a bunch of other ports as well.
It's a neat and clean setup, I only have 2 wires connected to my MAC. (1) Thunderbolt 4 cable leading to the Dock and (1) Thunderbolt 4 cable leading to aThunderbolt hard drive.

Fun to attempt to understand the Setup, I use logic and the ssl instructions for 360 are perhaps straightforward but not easy for us fumble heads!! The Mackie Control 1 and 5 thing. I walked away and the sleep mode kind of self destructed everything. I am running a ts4 dock, anybody who has a logical step by step to separate the UF8 and UF1 on a LOGIC Preference Mackie Control 1 and 2 at port 1 and port 5 that would help a laymen 5 year old understand this it might help many of future frustrations for others!
Maybe Us 5 year olds need a different set of toys! I get it working but it seems not quite right since I reset it all.

I wish this setup was available when I first started back in the day (especially with Dance/House Music). This is my 3rd or 4th studio iteration and this time I focused on no major hardware (unless I need it) because I find myself more & more in the box and unfortunately the trend I'm starting to see with hardware😢.

I was going to get the slightly smaller one but I'm so glad I didn't...I'm using every inch of this thing. I doesn't come with legs so you'll have to get yourself some nice metal sturdy ones from Etsy similar to this:

With all that gear on the desk it doesn’t even bend in the middle but I’d recommend getting a third leg for the middle (if you’re getting a long one like mine) so you don’t have to check it every few months like I do. I just turn the third leg sideways and push it some what further to the back so your feet can fit comfortably or buy legs with a supporting beam in the middle (spanning from one leg to the other)…but when I check that one would’ve cost $700+ and it would’ve come from over seas.

Hey thanks for making these. Idk if I missed it, but if you adjust the levels of faders and sends in the 360 mixer plug-in layer, does it also update Ableton’s mixer layer once you switch back?

The 360 software can control faders for both Ableton and 360 itself, so it’s like you have 2 sets of faders. I use 1 set for Ableton (automation and general levels) and another set in the 360 (for mixing). One button press and you can easily switch between the two…and yes the 360 “Ableton” faders do mimic the Ableton faders themselves. Dope sh!t👍🏾👍🏾

I think I’ll start with a uf1 and control most plugins with the push for now , and then eventually consider getting a uc1 ~~ and when I’m ready to mix the whole album I might get the uf8 if I feel like I need the extra motor faders 😊

Hey what's up my friend, Thanks for asking.
I don't know what DAW you're using so it maybe different from DAW to DAW but I think you got it right when you say you ungroup the 2 units. Just in case here's what I'm doing to view only Buss Tracks in the Daw or 360 Mixer on the UF8's
For viewing Buss Tracks only in Ableton Live:
-Make sure all your individual tracks are grouped in their appropriate Groups/Buss Tracks then fold the Group Tracks closed. This will now only show your Group/Buss Tracks on the UF8's.
For viewing Buss Tracks only in the 360 mixer:
-Create and name up to 8 "Group Tacks" that will be your buss tracks in your DAW
-add the SSL Buss compressor on those 8 tracks
-make sure all your individual tracks are grouped with their appropriate Group/Buss track (Drums to drums, synths to synths etc, etc.)
-now go to "Layer 2" on the UF8
-press "Quick Key 2" on the UF8
...and by default is shows your (up to 8) SSL Bus compressor slots in the 360 mixer window. The faders will now control the "Make Up Gains" of the Buss compressor and the "Soft Keys" will select the parameter that the POTS will control. Please note these controls will mimic the Bus Compressor of your UC1 if you have one so this is handy if you don't own a UC1 or you'd like to control multiple Buss perimeters on more than one Buss quickly or at the same time.
Hope that clarifies things my friend. Let me know if thats what you were inquiring about.✌🏾

@@mercmixx I was able to isolate the 8 busses onto the one UF8, however, because I also need quick access to my bank of sends, I couldn't get it to flow. So, what I have done is set macros to spill any groups (tracks, sends, instrument busses, vca busses, etc) exclusively onto the boards at the push of a button. Thanks again for sharing and I look forward to watching the rest of your vids.

I was going to suggest using tracks and routing them as if they were VCA's but I thought it would've been too crazy to try and explain all that here...especially try to explain the routing. Glad you figured out exactly what you needed my friend.👍🏾
I currently own a UF8 and really trying to make it muscle memory to use all the features as much as possible as I am so used to mouse & keyboard. However, I really enjoy being hands on mixing with the faders and wondering if there is an advantage to having the UF1 paired alongside? I don’t want to be too overwhelmed if you get me but if there is added benefit I’m all in.
When Mixing and doing Automation I like the quick access to the transport controls and meters…and I ain’t gonna lie, the UC1 thrown into the mix just lets you pretty much put the mouse away and listen.
Now to be clear everything I’m saying is for dedicated “Mixing“ and “Automation”. During Production you’ll basically be using the UF1. I use the soft keys on the UF8 for quickly creating audio and midi tracks plus a bunch of other stuff I program them for during production.
Thanks for sharing your setup. I'm a hobbyist and don't really need all of these. But I find myself wanting to twist a knob than adjust it with my mouse quite often. I was considering getting one of those custom 16 knob MIDI controllers online for about 1/5 of the price of a UF1. If you had to choose between the UF1 or a used UF8 for the same price as UF1, which one would you go for? Or would you recommend other controllers half the price of a UF1?

If I had to pick one I’d probably go with the UF8. If I had to pick what to get 2nd and 3rd, it would be the UC1 next then the UF1. My reasoning is if you’re going to be placing an SSL Channel Strip on every channel, then the UC1 should be next and then the UF1 in my opinion. I know you said you’re a hobbyist but as a hobbyist, you’ll get more use out of a UF8 as your first piece. Remember in the end, the reason for buying these controllers are to help with speed and workflow.

May I ask a question. Do you route your SSL12 output to outboard gear and reroute it back into the interface for maybe a master comp? If so, do you like it? and how did you go about doing it?
No, at the moment, I stopped using outboard gear because I end up never using it and then end up selling it. In this day and age outboard gear is somewhat of an option. That being said, I’m not against outboard gear I’d probably love to put together a mastering chain Just like you laid out but it would just be for my own enjoyment and not necessarily for need (also if I had thousand dollars laying around). In the future, I may grab just a few pieces to use in addition to my mastering chain, but we’ll see.

FYI… if you use good EQs, mastering EQs, compressors, and effect plug-ins and concentrate more on sound placement and M/S modes, you fine that you’ll need less and less hardware. After you master the basics, mid-side is what usually separates the men from the boys.
Thanks for all of the great info! I am trying to figure out what you did at the end of the video turning it on and off. It sounds like all of the bottom went away almost like you were using a hi pass filter on the track in the on position. Are you monitoring with a subwoofer? I am listening with good speakers in a tuned room and also on headphones and there is very little low frequency content while playing in the on position??? Thanks again for all of the info!

Yeah I'm in a treated room but it's only to tame reflections and flutter echos (the room size doesn't allow me to much more) I using Outputs sound treatments (pretty dope no complaints). I don't use subs (because of the room) but I do use a SubPac (which is awesome because you can feel at any sound level if the bass is muddy or punchy) and Audeze LCD-x's which can go down to 10Hz (Frequency Range 10Hz - 50kHz) so I can gage the low end pretty well plus I have my certain reference tracks for comparison as well. That being said the track played wasn't mixed let alone mastered and I only use the SubPac during those times. I was just running the track through the plugins as you'd do in the production phase by just using SSL Channel strips, SSL Bus Compressor and the SSL Xsaturator to show how you could get a decent vibe going as if you were running it through a board basically. Showing how now you get decent separation, less muddiness and how now the vocals cuts through a little better just by simply having these things parked on the tracks.
Once you start using dedicated channel strips that give you color/harmonics on every channel you can never go back...you'll always miss that little Umph!

@@mercmixx Thank you for the detailed response! Have you tried tuning your room with something like Sonarworks? The bass is always the hardest thing to control in a smaller room. I am fortunate to be in a room 23x17x15 that is tuned very well and the bottom is in check. Even in a room of this sized that is built for listening we still had to tune the speakers and the room. It might be a good idea to look at the bass response in your room and try tuning it. I appreciate all of the hard work you are doing and the great information so please keep the videos coming!
Ah yes I forgot to mention that...Yes I also use tuning software for my speakers because before that all I heard was mud (normal civilians didn't but I did lol)...but due to room size, physics and the wave length of bass frequencies, room eq'ing software can't help when it comes to critical frequencies in the sub region in this room. That's why some of us have to go other routes to get those freqs under control...I do know of some professionals just using the Audeze headphones and nothing else but I do dance music so I need to feel the bass as well as hear it and the SubPac is perfect for that. So now instead of running back and forth to the car, I just check it against reference tracks to make sure I'm good to go.

These are basically controllers to assist you in studio work. The plugins that they come with though will surely help you in mixing and as far as mastering, you can master with almost anything (plug-ins or hardware) it just depends on your skill level and understanding of what needs to be done on any given track at any given time. A professional mastering engineer with stock plugins will run circles around someone with the best equipment in the world if they don't know what they're doing...you know what I mean?
You can rent their plugins without the hardware if you wanted to try them out and buy the controllers at a later time. This setup is to speed up my work flow when in the studio instead of using just a keyboard and mouse. The "Star Plug-ins" that give your tracks that extra flavor are the SSL Channel strips, SSL Bus Compressor and in my opinion the SSL XSaturator. Their other plugs are great too but these are the ones you're gonna want to start with when it comes to production.
FYI...The reason I said "Rent" the plugins instead of "Buy" the plugins is because if you buy the controllers, they come with certain SSL plug-ins already so you'll save mad $$$. Hope that helped!✌🏾
I wish this setup was available when I first started back in the day (especially with Dance/House Music). This is my 3rd or 4th studio iteration and this time I focused on no major hardware (unless I need it) because I find myself more & more in the box and unfortunately the trend I'm starting to see with hardware😢.
What’s your recommendation on the first one to get to if you can’t buy them all in a bundle the UC1 or….. Also what do you use for mastering
I’d go with the UC1, UF8, UF1 and then as many UF8’s you or your team needs (Up to 4). I think 1 or 2 UF8’s is good for 1 person but if I were at a desk with more than 1 person, then that’s when I’d think about getting more.

You're in luck. The UC1's "Output Gain" knob controls the Channel Strip Fader....good question!👍🏾
As far as shelling out cash for anyone unit...You don't need any of these units to make good music especially if you're using the SSL Channel Strips and the SSL Saturator plug-in. These controllers are for speeding up your work flow as well as a little bit of inspiration (let's be honest) but i would't go broke-broke just to get them. What DAW are you using?...I'd probably invest in the Ableton Push for Ableton Live if I could only afford to get one thing for now, for the ability to help sketch out Drums, Chords and musical ideas during production.

I too have desks Full of controllers.
And I too use Reaper as my primary DAW (I have over a dozen though).
Like he said, you don’t Need any of these controllers.
They just replace a keyboard and mouse with dedicated controls, and let you work faster, which matters when time is money.
But, we were all starving students once, and these specialized controllers are Not where you maximize bang-for-buck.
That said, I’ve been using the SSL Channel Strip and Bus Compressor plugins since they ran on a SSL FireWire Duende box (which they long discontinued). SSL took my licenses and Upgraded them from Duende to Native, then again to Native 2 at no cost which is where we are now.
They also have had numerous Sales on these two plugins in a bundle for $50, which is an insanely good price, and the way I’d advise anyone to buy in. But it sounds like you’re already in, if not WAIT for the sale.
Now, I have also been a deep Console 1 user since the beginning and have all 8 of those channel strips, and all the Brainworx, and UAD, etc etc.
I am Absolutely a channel strip console workflow guy.
Here’s the thing:
They all bring different things to the table sonically.
Console 1 is the only one that Needs the hardware attached to fully access it’s OSD functionality, which is incredible, but for the purely audio control portion, they can All be used with a keyboard and mouse, just like any other plugins.
But with REAPER, you have Extensive Customization built in out of the box for what you can do with that Keyboard (Shortcuts), Mouse (Modifiers), as well as MIDI and OSC that can be mapped to Anything.
So, if you have the SSL Native plugins, or buy them for $50, you can use ANY Midi controller to get the same hands on connection that you do with the UC1. (Other than the Gain Reduction Meter which is sweet but non-essential.)
You will not only save Hundreds of dollars, but also I assume that as a student, you also don’t have the Massive Desk Real Estate available for a control that really only controls one plugin. Save the money and the space. (At least for now…)
Now, while I Do have a lot of SSL products, I opted not to get their controllers (though the UF1 is likely to happen), for the exact reason that I’m suggesting to you, but also because, I already Have a fader controller system that combined with REAPER, is much less expensive and much more extensive.
Welcome to Reaper C.S.I.!
Reaper C.S.I. stands for Control Surface Integrator. As you know, Reaper comes with a lot built in, but also has a tone of free Extensions that push it beyond the reach of Any other DAW (and again I have them all). Well beyond the SWS Extensions and ReaPack, Reaper CSI is an ecosystem that allows you to configure your Control Surface with whatever controllers you have in Any configuration you desire.
But you have to do a bit of work…kind of.
In the end though, you can end up with a hardware/software integration that Exceeds the level of control you get from a six figure Avid system. Or SSL Duality.
So, look at the desk in this video, and imagine instead, a Behringer X-Touch, and 3 Extensions for 32-Faders + Master.
Imagine that All of the DAW functions are laid out in front of you with Far More control over Reaper itself.
Then Imagine that the full SSL Channel Strip plugin that’s mapped to the UC1 is mapped across your Control Surface, however you like it, and with Flip control over every parameter (like he somewhat explained in the video, this gives you 100mm fader control over every parameter.)
Now imagine that this level of tactical control is for EVERY PLUGIN that you own, mapped exactly as you like it, and your Muscle Memory develops over 1 control surface. Exactly as you set it up.
All that said, while I have a four-foot wide 32-channel configuration, I’d actually advise almost everyone to stick to 16-channels.
More is not necessarily more, and I set mine up first out of Ego, but also because I have a 32-channel Analog Console that I run in a Hybrid Mixing setup and the Analog Mixer + Control Surface match 1-to-1. Beyond the scope of this comment.
What I would recommend, for a Reaper User, is buying a Used X-Touch for probably $400 and start there.
I don’t know of ANY system that will get you More absolute control of everything, for less money.
There will be a learning curve, but on the other side you’ll be unstoppable.
And for half the price of a UC1, you’ll have 99% of its control over the same SSL plugins, along with ALL of your other plugins, and most of the UF8 + UF1 features as well.
Search in the Reaper Forums and here on UA-cam for CSI, most of the activity is on 1 thousand page thread.
And if you’re part of the Reaper Community then you already know how much support is out there.

I was thinking about doing something like this but I typically am under 16 tracks for my production . I am thinking that after all the costs something like and SSL Big Six might make more sense
Yeah, the big six is a little different than what I have but if you’re doing mostly production work with an MPC, then the big six is perfect for you. I do a lot of mixing and mastering as well as production work for clients so I need the speed and agility to get things done fast instead of being stuck behind a mouse. Once you create your own mixing and production templates, you know where everything is and where everything goes and you’re doing more “doing” than “thinking” while you’re working…and when you mix it with the SSL plug-ins like the Channel strips and Bus Compressor, Xsaturator…trust me the sound is already there.
If the UC1 could control other eq and comp plugins id be all over it. The UF1 with the mouse hover plugin control is making me want one.. but for now I'm sticking with my Avid Dock.

I know they are going to be offering more channel strips in the future but I don't know if all SSL type EQ's would be flexible enough for you.
-They do have the SSL EQ plug-in that's surgical (somewhat like the ProQ 3" and emulates multiple EQ types (but without the dynamic eq feature as of now). You could use that plus "Focus" (hover mode) to control different types of EQ's and compressors (and of course other plug-ins)...That's how I'm using it.
@@mercmixx At home I have the SSL eq plugin, its great, however I mainly use the stock PT one day to day (Im a post audio TV mixer who works 60% of the time in office, and does pretty much the exact thing every day.. plus I need to use the plugins we have at work, which are waves and PT stock in my sessions if they need to be revisited by other staffers.. at home I have way more plugins than what we have at work.. ) I've asked my Manager to get the SSL bundle for work, but its 15 licences at our location alone.. I did however convince him to get us all the waves clarity pro (which in our industry is a godsend) so maybe he will move on the SSL.. I know my supervisor also likes the SSL.. which makes sense as we used to have a 4048E (first SSL in Canada) before going entirely ITB in the late 90s

If you have them all, then switch them up from time to time or depending on what the track needs I guess…and if you only have one, then run what you brung.
Sadly at the end of the day, the end-listener is not gonna be able to tell the difference. This is why I tell people to stress more about a good song than the plug-ins. A good song will always out-shine any specific plugin as long as you follow basic “Mixing and Mastering “ techniques.

I'm assuming you're speaking of the audio interface right? If so then yes Sir I'm only using the SSL 12 audio interface.
I had an Antelope audio interface but this matches the impedance of my headphones perfectly. Audeze LCD-x's are no joke when paired with a properly matched audio interface. I thought about getting a way more expensive headphone amplifier in addition but after hearing the SSL 12, I was good.
Please note:
The SSL 12 does NOT have the same insides as the smaller SSL 2 and 2+ with just another 2 channels added. The SSL 2's don't even work with the 360 software. (I don't want anyone reading this to purchase one thinking so)
-The Output impedance for the SSL 2 and 2+ is 10 ohms.
-The Output impedance for the SSL 12 is less than 1 which is Awesome.

I had an Antelope interface and switched to Apollo. I like what I see from the 360 software, and that made me consider going with the SSL ecosystem.
Nice considering the SSL route. To be honest the reason I made the video is because I just didn't feel other people where showing off how dope it was and what it could actually do to help a persons work flow with music production...it just wasn't a piece of shinny new gear.
As far as with headphones, all of the specs do matter at some point but some headphone/audio interface combinations can really hinder what you're hearing and you'll usually never have a problem...until you do. I'd watch that guys Julian Krause's video going into audio interfaces if you haven't already. I have to give props where it's due.

The 360 Software only works with the SSL 12 audio interface. (To be clear you’ll be able to control the volume with the SSL 2 but it will not talk to the 360 software)
Surprisingly, it’s not that expensive to purchase the SSL 12 so you won’t be disappointed by upgrading. The SSL 12 also works better with low impedance headphones Audeze Lcd-x’s which are great for mixing.

Hey mate I'm guessing how can I make my UF1 and UF8 follow the track that I am selecting with my mouse in Ableton
It seems there may have been a change in one of the updates that allows (i’m only referring to Ableton) the UF1 to follow a “Track selection” only if the track is in the current “Bank selection”. Let me try to explain, if you have a UF8 and it’s showing tracks 1 through 8 then the UF1 will follow any track selected between 1 through 8. But if the UF8 bank selection is tracks 1 through 8 and then you click on track 16 with the mouse, the UF1 will not jump to track 16. It will only jump to track 16 if the UF8 bank selection is showing tracks 9 through 16. I don’t remember this ever happening in Ableton before so this might be something new. I will put in a bug report to see if this is truly a bug or I’m just buggin’.

do you need to connect them to each other? or do they just connect to the computer via usb?
I have them connected straight to the computer but they can be daisy chained like it says in the manual . I was told that you need to set them up connected straight to the computer at first (I’m assuming one at a time) and then once they’re connected to the computer, then you can go ahead and Daisy chain them instead. I never tried this because I have the open ports but that’s what another user told me in the comments.

… Also, I’d recommend (2) UF8 at first since you already have the UF1 & UC1 because adding 3 or 4 UF8’S to YOUR EXISTING, SET UP may make the whole thing too long, unless you’re working with other people sitting right next to you. I’m a person that would buy (4) UF8’s but then my UC1 and UF1 wouldn’t be the center of my console and I’d have to slide my chair left and right to adjust my furthest UF8’s which isn’t ideal in my case. I think (3) 😔would be my limit for what I do.

Ah, Good question!
I have them hooked up to a USB -C/Thunderbolt 4 hub. Depending on how many USB pieces of equipment you have, along with the quality of USB Docks and Hubs you have hooked up to your computer, you probably won’t be able to daisy chain them together. Mine are connected to a hub (using 1 cable each) and that hub is then connected to a USB -C/Thunderbolt 4 Dock which is then connected to the Mac (using only 1 cable).

-Caldigit Thunderbolt 4 Element Hub
(Please note “Docks” and “Hubs” are not the same things. I have my “Docks” connected directly to my computer and the “Hub” is connected to the Dock).

Yeah I used 3 Thunderbolt cables but you could also use USB.

Yeah I’ve said they need a rack mounted unit for people like yourself that need more inputs and the SSL 12 would be the head unit for functions that you’d want right next to you (which it does) like volume, mute, dim, phantom power, mono, etc, etc.

The controller does not represent or provide sound at all. It is cool and allows for easier hands on mixing without having to use the keyboard and mouse for everything but it creates no sound whatsoever.
This is true but I assumed everyone by now knows of the UF8 and UC1 and that they come with the free plug-ins that emulate the SSL Hardware....but you know what happens when you assume. The video was primarily focused on their functionality rather than the sound but thanks for pointing that out. I'll probably bring up that point in the next video. Yeah I miss spoke. They come with SSL plugins that do the grunt work (The “analog sound”) these are their the controllers. You can’t use the UC1 without the Plugins.

-SSL Metering plugin
-SSL Drum Strip
-SSL Vocal Strip
-and the 360 Mixer (SSL Mixer)

It’s so fast to get a good sound just by using the Channel Strips and Bus compressor on the buses…I found myself using less plugins even when I had the Console 1.

@@mercmixx Depends what you're trying to achieve and what type of music you're producing / mixing. If you want that 60's, 70's and 80's vibe you do it right no short cuts. Plugins have their place and can achieve things outboard cant. The same is true for analogue gear, its imperfections and colour add a character that plugins can only imitate. There's a reason why good quality outboard gear holds its value my bro and why outdated midi controllers end up in the trash next to outdated computers.

Just keep in mind a lot of well known engineers (Mixing and Mastering) are moving if not have moved to in the box (I’m pretty sure you’re aware) and some keep gear just to “truly’ impress friends/clients and I can’t hate on that. Our goals at the end of the day is to use what we got to make great music for the people…I’m pretty sure you can agree.✌🏾
@@mercmixx If SSL released a smaller midi controller that mirrored the Waves or Brainworx E/G Channel strip exactly id be first in line.The UC1 and now the new "Channel Strip 2" take up to much room for me. When you have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, midi keyboard, an MPC, a Maschine, a monitor/ interface controllers etc etc space becomes a serious issue and shit starts getting hectic on the work flow. Id kill for a straight forward E channel controller that mirrored the plugin. Why no one has made one is nuts as its the most used channel strip plugin period.
@@djdanger9812 Be careful what you wish for my friend, Rocksolid Audio makes a smaller controller for SSL type EQ plug-ins but it uses a software wrapper to control the plug-ins. I wouldn't recommend it for various reason (for one being the wrapper itself) but check it out and do your own research. As far as desk space...space is at a premium so that's why I opted for a large (74"x42"x1.5") counter top from Ikea and ordered metal sturdy legs for it off of Etsy. Now space isn't a issue for me and I can always rearrange my desk at anytime in the future. If you need bigger they go up to 98" but the depth shrinks to 25". I'm glad I went with the larger depth which is key for my setup and it's not flimsy what so ever.
One more thing, I recommend you test out the SSL 4KB Channel strip (if you haven't already) and tell me what you think, there's a 14 day trial (or a 30 day trial for all the SSL plug-ins). If you like it and want it, you could wait for a sale or buy the UC1 which comes with both SSL 4KB & 9000K Channel strips and the SSL Bus Compressor for FREE which normally cost $329 each (I use all 3 on every mix). You see that's how the ECO-system thing starts my friend, because the UC1 only cost $799, while buying all 3 plug-ins separately will cost you $960..."without" the controller.

Over $ 5000 + electrical bill or a good touch screen monitor for $ 1500. Bought UF8 ,UC1 returned them one week later paid the restocking fee and bought the monitor instead. SSL good investment if you want to impress people new to recording , walk into your home studio.

I like the whole 360 concept but, for the price of all those controllers you are better off buying a big six and getting a real analog desk.
Yeah but then I’ll be slowed by the mouse and losing my basically “One knob per function” setup for speed. I look at the Big Six like a mini mixer (which it is) for a DAW setup if you need more inputs with a little flexibility. A Big Six can’t do any of the things I described in the video which I bought these controllers for. I got rid of my analog 32x8 channel mixer and Akai DR8 (a ADAT digital recorder without the tape) long time ago because it was just a giant 2 channel interface that I wasn’t using. Remember you don’t mix down huge track counts for clients on a Big Six…you mix them down on a desk or in the DAW.
You have to look at it this way, the SSL controllers are my mouse and the SSL plug-ins that they come with got me covered with the sound.
Trust me, I come from the analog days so I get both sides of the fence and where you’re coming from but this is the future and it’s only gonna get better and better the more powerful computers become. Plus C’mon man…I come from the analog days, I gotta have my knobs, faders.✌🏾😎
@@mercmixx big six is a 16x16 usb C professional audio interface (console) with professional routing, analog summing and monitoring… not a mere 2 channel mixer. The big six gives the SSL results where as the plugins only offer the SSL vibe. It’s definitely used in pro level studios for small bands and such. It’s a rare beast for the price.
I’m on your side when it comes to keeping everything discrete and convenient, though. I’m moving more and more towards the full internal mix environment as plugins get better and better. Thousands of dollars of would be bulky gear all living in my laptop.
Oh for sure I know the Big Six and what can do, it’s just I need a little more like, much more EQ & comp options, automation and if I’m going to reach for that in the box, I may as well stay in the box you know what I mean…and to be clear my 32x8 analog setup was being used as a 2 channel mixer at the end of the day.
If I was planning to get more gear like keyboards and sound modules needed to record multiple mics and drums then a Big Six is something I’d reach for no question. It’s just the SSL Controllers are a whole different animal for me altogether.
But let me know what you decide to get if you’re looking for more of the in the box solution I’m interested. I’d recommend you do much research and choose wisely for your needs. ✌🏾
@@mercmixx ya brother… don’t get me wrong. 360 as a workflow I use, too and love it even with the limitations the plugins sound great. Ya I’m more and more interested in the virtual mix and production environment these days.

For me this isnt the future. Analog system have a sound that the best digital system no have. Digital is cheaper, lighter and pratice but no have the same Sound.

Yeah I gotcha 👍🏾 👍🏾 but what I was trying to get across was that "Controlling & Communication" of the studio environment was the way of the future, not the analog vs digital thing....I should've made that more clear (but maybe in future video).
Now I've already brought up that a nice next step in this Eco-System would be a rack mounted analog box similar to the SSL Sigma, that would have multiple analog i/o and could be daisy chained together and grow with your needs as your studio grows. It could also accept insert points or act as inserts so we could hook up additional hardware as needed. I know there's been similar analog boxes in the past but done right, it'll definitely be the future. Ask all the greats unfortunately selling their gear, would they be interested in something like that...I would. These kids growing up today making music in their bedrooms on their laptops will not be on an SSL board....hell if they don't use ear buds, they're not even listening to music in stereo, let alone with proper bass (i.e Bluetooth speakers). It boggles my mine that none of them (and I do mean none) even have a proper stereo system at home...and it's not even their fault.
So as the big kids in the room, we need to put things in place for them to naturally grow into that's better than just a laptop, you know what I mean? Now this box shouldn't be $500 and it also shouldn't cost $10,000 either. So my point in the video was the SSL Eco-System is a perfect start for something great, if they keep pushing...stopping at controllers and an audio interface would be crazy.🙄
