      It started rapidly declining over the dance, after the Gullet, spice town was never rebuilt, high tide was sacked and all the money of the velaryons went with it, tons of men and ships were destroyed, Alyn managed to slightly rebuild it but he wasn’t as good as building wealth like Corlys was and was more of a spender then him, Daenara was the last marriage of a velaryon and targaryen as far as books go, and that only went through because Baela and Rhaena were Aegons older sisters and Alyn was well liked by Aegon.They steadily lost power and faded from Influence, no longer having the greatest navy and not being at all wealthy anymore, marriages to the house no longer happened because they no longer offered anything special, no dragons, no great wealth or fleet.By the time of the rebellion the velaryons were lick spittles of Aerys and after the ships wrecked in the storm, they couldn’t even rebuild from that.
      Essentially it went from a great house level strength and a strong rival of the Targaryens before the dance, to a large fleet wielding house during Aegon 3’s rule that benefited from Baela and Rhaena being the kings sisters, to incredibly minor all the way to the rebellion where a storm at dragonstone was all it took to cripple the remaining fleet the house boasted.By GOT, the main fleet in Stannis’s forces is the essosi forces he gets from people like Salador Sann.

It was not wise of Corlys to choose an heir nor of his blood but Vaemond only wanted Driftmark for himself. If it was for anything else, he would’ve pushed Baela’s claim instead of his own, but to do so would have to change the succession of the Iron Throne.

    Honestly, if Vaemond had said Driftmark should go to Baela instead of himself, I think he could've actually convinced Rhaenyra to support Vaemond's plans to usurp Rhaenyra's sons. In the show its very clear Rhaenys struggled to support Rhaenyra since she believes Rhaenyra to be involved with her son's "Death". Whilst I believe Vaemond truly was honest about preserving House Velaryon's bloodline, the simple fact is when he mentioned HE was the the one who needed to inherit it, he lost all credibility. If he supported the succession as it should be, IE as in Baela and Rhaena, I think Rhaenys would've eventually supported his plan. Of course this hinges entirely on Corlys actually dying, which he doesn't. But in another episode she did actually try to convince Corlys that Laena's children should inherit over Rhaenyra's sons, so it is possible this could have worked.

    So if I understand correctly inheritance laws follow male primogenitor. Basically, this means lands will prioritize men before women regardless of how close a woman is. So the example would be a Lord who has two sons and two daughters while the Lord's brother has two sons of his own, if the Lord and his two sons die without heirs of their own the Lord's brother would inherit the lands, and his sons after him. The only way for the Lord's daughters to inherit would be if all men in their family die thus leaving them as the sole family member. The other option would be for the Lord to declare ahead of time that he wants his lands to pass through his daughters before going to his brother.
    In Corlys' case, he expressed clearly and openly to everyone that his heir was Luke his grandson from Laenor. So while Vaemond could bitch and moan all he wanted so long as Corlys or the King never changed their mind on the matter Luke would stay heir.

    • @TrackerNeil
      @TrackerNeil Місяць тому +5

      I don't think the inheritance laws in Westeros were as clear as all that. In "A Dance With Dragons", Jon Snow opines that a daughter comes before an uncle, although I am sure others would disagree. Fact is, inheritance laws were a bit vague, and probably deliberately so, which allowed for all sorts of claims.

    • @randomstrategy7679
      @randomstrategy7679 Місяць тому +3

      Wrong. Look up "male preference primageniture" on wikipedia, or on the wiki of ice and fire. It means "a son comes before a daughter, a daughter comes before a brother".
      What you just described (where brothers inherit before daughters) is called absolute male primogeniture, and is NOT the system used in westeros (at least not before the dance)
      The easy way to remember the difference is that male preference means a preference for males, but not at the expense of position in the family tree. Absolute male means only males, even if you've got to look in different spots of the family tree.

    • @TrackerNeil
      @TrackerNeil Місяць тому

      @@randomstrategy7679 If that were so settled in Westeros, then why did Rhaenys have such a solid case to present to the Great Council? Clearly, not all of the lords agreed with that wiki.

    • @randomstrategy7679
      @randomstrategy7679 Місяць тому +1

      @@TrackerNeil Because
      1)The *actual* law is "whoever a lord names as his heir is his heir". Male preference primogeniture only applies when the lord hasn't made a public choice. If the lord chooses someone else, that's legally their heir.
      2) Jaehaerys had already (very controversially) named Baelon to be his heir, despite Rhaenys being his traditional heir according to the rules. This is what started the succession crisis - before Jaehaeeys did that, his heir was just Rhaenys, no questions asked. So the rules of succession were already fucked when he later called the great council to choose between Rhaenys (Jaehaerys's original heir before he started messing around with succession and naming other people as his heir), Laenor (heir of Rhaenys) and Viserys (heir of Baelon). The Great Council decided that the son of the guy named as heir was better than the original heir.

    • @maxi1ification
      @maxi1ification 14 днів тому +2

      You're close but still wrong in one regard: Andal law allows for daughters to inherit if there isn't a living brother to inherit first, but they always are held above in the line of succession over the uncles. So in your example, if the Lord and his 2 sons died, then the eldest daughter would technically be the rightful heir before the Lord's brother's line had any right to it. The rest, however, is correct in that a Lord can decide to disinherit an established heir and designate a daughter as his chosen heir, the problem there is that that tends to cause tensions and discussions because rarely does the disinherited party remain quiet and rarely do people around accept a female ruler without question.

      Now Martin himself said that once Laenor died, Baela became the legitimate heir to Driftmark. This is no different than Cersei Lannister becoming the Lady of Casterly Rock after Tywin dies. Jaime can't inherit as a knight of the kingsguard, and Tyrion is basically disinherited. Now, Tywin's younger brother Kevan, could contest it but legally it went to Cersei.

      A seat can be an ancestral belonging to a specific house, but it doesn't mean it will always belong to said house. The rules of succession in Andal law do not restrict a seat as belonging to a specific House, but rather it simply relates to succession by both kinship and sex: sons and daughters inherit before brothers and sisters, and males inherit before females, in that order. Therefore, a daughter would inherit before an uncle had any right to. As such, if Rhaenyra's sons were really bastards and thus had no right to inherit, then Laena's line comes next and thus Baela, being the eldest, would be the rightful heir before Vaemon in any circumstance.

      No. I wouldn't. And not all houses would. Corlys for example chose Lucerys as his heir. He's brother to the future king. He's to be married to his granddaughter. Meaning his great grandchild will inherit Driftmark. And spoiler
      this is what happens although not quite in the same way as of course Lucerys is now dead. But Corlys has other kids. Bastards.

      @@louwinters508 yes Corlys chose Lucerys but that's in the show, in the books which are more logical - Rhaenyra asked Corlys to make Lucerys the heir to Driftmark since she had already betrothed Lucerys to Rhaena and Jace and Baela , thus Corlys anyways gets his blood on the throne as well as on Driftmark through his granddaughters by blood and grandsons by name . Remember when Lucerys died , Joffrey should have become the heir to Driftmark but Corlys bought his bastard who were HIS blood even if they were illegitimate. And remember Corlys later betrays Rhaenyra by saving the live of Addam by informing him and makin him escape when she ordered the dragonseeds to be arrested for questions aka torture if needed .Thus blood runs thicker than water.
