It's okay Scotty the EPA is going to be a thing of the past very soon.
Goodnight Scotty. 👋👋👋☺️
Spring and warm weather will come soon. Already getting there. 😵💫😐
@@robertvance1873 Yeah -- we don't need no stinking environment, anyways !!
I own a Tesla so every day is a sad day for me.
It’s not too late to get a diesel car
I will trade you my ‘04 Chevy impala anytime!
Get a horse and buggy.
If you get lucky and it catches on fire and you get insurance money, buy yourself a pre 2020 Chrysler product used or a good Toyota or Honda , even an old Ford with the straight six that will run for over 400,000 miles plus. But it seems you may need new even though I hate leases you may want to do so, it is the choice I would take so I am not responsible for troubles. Cars today are filled with SH++ that were not tested but put in and we are the Guinea pigs to test. My newest car in my family is a 2014 Chrysler 300 which has it quirks but still fixable and my favorite is my 2011 ram 1500 HEMI that never let me down at 200,000 miles with very little parts replacement still have 14 of the original spark plugs and I work the hell out of it. My major job was a noisy alternator. I plan to replace all plugs and race a 95 Corvette and i should beat him, I know how to use the shiftier and can make it faster than you can imagine a truck can run. May need slicks to hold the tires to the road.
@toddcorrigan4874 I like your way of thinking!
Besides, insurance on Teslas are insane!
We all living paycheck to paycheck.. We all need a new vehicles and its all 20k+ for used with 70k+ miles on them...Don't know a good mechanic so fixing or purchasing is very difficult.. - The average person. Car companies: "Hey we gonna put chrome and big LED touchscreens on a truck so its 10x more expensive and unpractical for the daily working man. Oh and will put turbos, auto shut off and moon roofs in so you have more to maintain later." GL!
Yeah I'm looking for a used car. 2013 130k miles... 20-30k!!???!?
@@ArticulateArena it’s unpractical
Blame the democrats for demanding automakers build cars and trucks that punish owners / buyers into buying an EV. They don't care if your 1.5 cu turbo engine will last 3 or 5 years. How does our government get off mandating the auto makers MUST produce cars with a certain MPG that is perhaps unobtainable ? Let the demand drive the market
@Gordon-j4w found the cult member
@@Gordon-j4w You lost, cope.
Some things must be OEM. O2 sensors are definitely one of them.
If it rains in a scotty video, it’s a sad day for americans. If it’s about a rav4, then it’s every company going bankrupt lol
And it’s shocking! 😳
You should replace the primary O2 sensors regardless of emissions testing or not. Those sensors replaced after 100k miles will greatly improve efficiency, fuel mileage, engine life, performance. For replacement O2 sensors, don't go to the dealer! Look for either BOSCH or NIPONDENSO brand, Direct-fit application, not one's that say universal fit, unless it's an old 1-wire O2 sensor.
Ngk is no good? They make good spark plugs
I replaced all 4 O2 sensors on the famous 95 MERC at 75,000 miles with new BOSCH sensors. Now at 185,000 miles, with as-new fuel mileage and excellent emissions testing results.
True but some times this cause problems that you must use genuine factory parts like especially for Chrysler products.
@@toddcorrigan4874YES! You are correct for dodge/Chrysler
@@billpuhljr1073 Yeah I had to learn the hard way before I saw the reason on Scanner Dan, I had to reset codes every day almost . Put Genuine Mopar and never had a problem since. After markets have a short pause in voltage and trips the code Mopars do not.
When Ford, GM & Chrysler products get old they can have electrical problems
Same for us old people but at least wiring harnesses and other parts are available for cars. I am getting to the point that I need more replacement parts than a YUGO and they need that from factory.
The engineers have made cars too expense to repair by overloading cars with gadgets and electronics.
@@Gordon-j4w Probably, but maybe there aren't as many low trim level cars even available so people don't have a choice and end up buying cars with all the stuff in them that they don't use or want. My car came with heated seats, I've used them exactly zero times.
You are 100% right i bought a 2011 Ram tradesman and I have the original key and spark plugs at 200,000 miles. Roll down windows and key open door with no power locks. No key fob that fails and even bent my key and straighten it and still works. I still have my 1994 Nissan pick up that will return to the road from a bad timing chain tension er that I caused failure from Reving Up My Engine too many times, had a Porsche 944 before I bought it and drove it the same. I am old school and still have 2 1988 Wranglers that I also want to fix with manual trans and transfer cases. As for old with no fancy gadgets my daughter has several Kitchen aid mixers from when they were called Hobart and used them frequently that are between 10 and 20 older than her at 29.. I am on the hunt for an old Ford F 150 that I owned in the past with the 300 six and was stupid and sold.
So basically we need sensors for the sensors 😂
I’m sensing sensor sensors
Sensception
Chased this on my 2004 Taco for many years. Snooped the exhaust system and found a leak at the manifold and another between the cats. Fixed those and no issues since. Just another thing to check out first before diving down the scan tool rabbit hole (and cheap and quick to do).
Change the secondary O2 or O2s firstly then clear code. If p0420 doesn’t pop than you are good. If not? You’re gonna have to change out those pesky catalytic converters. Just remember if your car is California emissions compliant you’re gonna need a California emissions compliant cat. I did the same on my 2003 Toyota Celica GT and ultimately I had to change out the cat and is California missions type cat. Had this car since day one and done all the maintenance on it does not burn oil or consume oil has 255,000 miles. I still had to change out the catalytic converter so no they don’t last forever.

RIP Scotty, a sad day indeed.
@@cmiles97x38 did Scotty die?....I sure hope not
Recently had to repair a used Honda Odyssey (2004, federal emissions but registered in CA) to pass smog.
I learned more about emissions than I ever wanted to know! Ultimately I found two bad and two marginal sensors, one failed cat (honeycomb had completely disintegrated), one barely- functioning cat, and the under-floor cat about 70% plugged with the disintegrated honeycomb of the first one. No wonder the previous owner gave up on it!
Takeaways from my experience:
(1) ALL exhaust leaks must be fixed up to the muffler. Incorrect exhaust system pressure or flow can make the sensors misbehave.
(2) An OBD2 scanner with the ability to graph live data is essential. Just reading fixed data and using a multimeter will not show you the details that you will need to identify the problems.
(3) Make sure the upstream sensors show a nice regular signal indicating that they ARE detecting the fuel trim modulation. If they are not, they probably need to be replaced. If they are outside of the specified voltage range (0.4-0.9v for mine IIRC), are flatline at one limit of the range, or jagged/spikey looking, the sensor is bad and should be replaced.
(4) Once the upstream signals are basically correct, check the fuel trims short and long term values to see if the values are near zero or at least moving consistently in that direction. If they are not near-zero then you probably have an intake problem which must be addressed first. Trim values above zero indicate the engine is running lean (needed extra fuel to balance excess air) while trim values below zero indicate a rich condition. Check the obvious stuff first (air filter clean, fuel injection rail pressure correct, intake manifold pressure and temperature reasonable). Most vacuum leaks will make the engine run lean BUT a stuck-open EGR can make it run rich -- that should throw a code of its own but not always...
(5) with all of the above correct, the downstream sensor should be either a smooth flat line within the specified voltage range or a very slight rippling within that range, matching the upstream sensor's timing. If it is not within the specified voltage range or has a lot of spikey noise then the sensor is bad. If the downstream sensor signal is within the voltage range and looks just like the upstream sensor signal, then the cat is bad.
I hope that saves somebody the frustration that I had learning these lessons!
You are so smart. I wish a mechanic I know was so good. Thank you very much for sharing.
Everything is squirrelly to Scotty!😂😂😂😂
its only a sad day for the owner of the car
a lot of very good information today thanks scotty
Nonsense. We put in Bosch and Denso sensors all the time and they’re fine. The only reason to put in OEM sensors is if they are about the same price as the aftermarket then yeah it makes sense, but if you got a $250 sensor from the dealer go buy the aftermarket one for 70 bucks. Never get the Universal kind, only get the exact fit.
Why is it a sad day for us because he told us to buy expensive O2 sensors for nothing?
Eh, Why is it a sad day for us?
Cause this cheap Chinese part just destroyed his car!
It's raining, while he's trying to work on his car, that's unamerican. Duh
The sociopath Netanyahu is back in town.
New to the channel eh? 😂
It’s in the subtext. I’ll be sobbing all night.
No catalytic converters needed on EVs.
catalytic converters should be replaced free regardless of age of vehicle.... it's an emission system.
Like what Scotty said, it really only matters if the car is registered in an area that does smog emissions tests. As far as I know, it doesn't hurt the performance or the longevity
Just goes too show you it's all a scam. The converter doesn't need replacing because it's not bad. But if it was an area with emissions testing, they'd hop right on that train in a heartbeat without questioning the functioning of the oxygen sensors, which are the actual problem here.
1. Live where the system is checked.
2. Yes, if you can not correct with an Italian tune up and Guaranteed to Pass Smog, then check 02 sensors.
3. Getting just one out isn't the way to go on my car. Pulled them all and kept the good ones for the final years of my car.
4. Check whether your catalytic converter is bolted or welded on. Mine is bolted on.
5. If you are ever told "your catalytic converter is bad after working with the 02 sensors, take off the converter, run it through soapy dish water, clean and then try it.
This is good information. Thanks for sharing.
I went to school for this. The only way to determine is a 5 gas analyzer.
I got codes and I drive to work and home less than 20 both ways. Doesn't impact fuel economy or performance? lol
Want to fix catalyst converter light. an Italian tune-up ,works every time on my car light, gone after turning car off and leaving for an hour or so
Could the oxygen sensors could be cleaned?
should of got a Town Car instead, wouldn't be having problems. don't these LS's have Jag engines?
Went down that road years ago with after market o2 never again
These car computer are a joke
Really !?? You see anybody LAUGHING !??
I have this same car, it’s a Lincoln LS.They’re not bad but you have to realize that they were partially built by Jaguar !!
It’s when Ford decided to acquire Jaguar and we know what British cars can be like.
I used to have 1 of these too. It's fun when everything works but the coil packs were an expensive problem.
I’ve never had issues with Bosch 02 sensors.
Very interesting thread but man how cars have developed over the years 😮
I think i heard someone beeping at scotty when he was driving 😂😂😂
Ca'mon Scotty, this is the golden age of America! Get with the program.
Awesome information
Nj makes us pass inspection for the sticker. But u don't have to have inspection to get ur registration yearly. I know tons of people with inspection stickers from 2020, 2022 still. Also just print one up using the internet or know a guy who gets them right from dmv and sells them😊 but nj does suck that only thing they check is emissions
You don't play that here in Pa. They find you with illegal sticker on your car. You're in big trouble
What kills the cats is when you have missfires from bad spark or ignition coils will miss and dump fuel into the exhaust amd cause the cats to get real hot then they will crack and clog the exhaust and cause problems also the cats over time deteriorating and dont catalyze the fuel NOx emmisions you can check the cats with a laser thermometer they should be around 500 to 800 degrees depends on the type of car then measure them and compare the readings nad if the temp deviation is significant then you know its bad
Thanks Scotty for the information but if it raining and the car is not in a garage why did you leave the door open?😮😂😂😂😂
Scotty can't run test because his laptop is running outdated and unsupported Windows 8. Need to upgrade to Windows 10/11
Scotty's brain is still running on Windows 95. If he had feathers on those arms, he'd be a like a regular bird !
New operating systems are not upgrades; they are downgrades. Computers software was at it's best around 1012 or 2013.
I think xp, as great as it was, was the beginning of the end. After that, you never owned anything that would stay functional. Everything required updates. And we all “gave” permission for those “updates”.
In 95, you go to Best Buy or wherever, buy a disk, install a program. It would work forever. After xp…no more.
@@portermatthew84 Yep, you understand.
I love how Scotty thinks the computer is "warming up"
It's "A Sad Day for All Americans" for the 40th time this year. 🤣
Great video as always, Scotty!
I don't have a Ford. But why was that bad news for Americans ?
Because he can only use the " I'm being sued", "Sad news for me", " Honda /Toyota are crapping in their pants" headlines so much
Morel of the story.
Run several tests to find out o2 sensors are bad.
Tennessee doesn’t require inspection anyway.
But wait.
Bad sensor can eventually damage computer.
Replace the sensor with oem part….
Maybe that car needs some Italian tune-up with cat clean
At around 80mph on the interstate in a lower gear. It works.
There is a say "If you don´t understand something, get rid of it !" Clearly you don´t...
Oh i see the problem its a lincoln LS
Did you know that the car runs fine and Tennessee doesn't have emissions test?
Yeah. Them damned hillbillies don't care if their grandchildren can't breathe -- or YOURS, either.
Emissions testing saves lives, whether you BELIEVE it, or not.
I thought the video was going to tell us that someone took a shot at Trump and missed AGAIN!
I love these Lincoln Town Cars. They don’t make cars like this anymore.
That's a FWD Lincoln Continental.
The cats might be cracked and the pipes are clogged needs new cats becuse they are made from ceramic and they crack and break into pieces and then clog the exhaust pipes, it will cuse the engine back pressure can damage the exhaust valves nad also engine wont accelerate like it should even though you kight not notice if its not real bad but it will reduce power output of the engine if its realy bad you will press the gas and the car will hesitate and the rpms wont climb fast need new cats
waiting for the damage to manifold message
Seems like America just keeps winning to me....
Yo dawg, I noticed you like sensors so I added some sensors to your sensors.
This is why I became a Floridian. No sensitive state inspectors or squirrely sensors can screw with going about your life.

On electronic parts it is best to go OEM as they are too cruxial to the running of the vehicle and you need quality reliable functioning parts. Some mechanical parts or small motors however the cheap Chinese parts would be perfectly fine, its knowing which parts are high level components are the key. Cheers.

Thank you that's an interesting car never heard of that one
im a bicycle mechanic,40 years, when my car got too low to the ground to change the oil i took my hyundai to one of my customers he is a honda mech with his own shop. he would replace parts with honda parts as they fit and way better quality. when i get a new used car im thinking honda or toyota. got to save money. love your videos
Nice old Lincoln
not sure about the Americans day, but its a sad couple of months for a Bulgarian... I'm having this code pop up since early December and my 2.4 manual compass still drives pretty normally... except my fuel efficiency went down the drain im getting like 14mpg on short trips winter city driving...
So basically get a magic marker and color over the check engine light.
Fixed.
Hey Scotty, What do you think about buying a fleet vehicle from an electric company? I did purchase one they kept it in a garage so in ct. that’s huge!😂. Vehicles here tend to rust out before they wear out lol. It is a 2014 jeep Patriot with the 5 speed manual 6 speed automatic transmission. It had a computer on the passenger side and rear seats never used. 115,000 miles everything works no rust decent tires. I paid $6,000 and this year isn’t so bad I’m hoping to get 100,000 miles. I do pet rescue so I put a lot of miles on my vehicle.
Fiat Patiot😅😅😅😅
