Thank you dude for such an informative and helpful video it took me 2 hours to complete this video (by pausing and noting down the imp points) but i understood everything about zener diode. ❤
Thank you, I passed my exam because of your great help! May I ask what software are you using to create a video and writting on the screen itself? Thanks
At 23:59, the two terms are equated and the equation is simplified for Rs. During this derivation, it has been assumed that the Zener Knee Current is Zero. That means just voltage across the Zener diode should remain at least Vz to operate it in the breakdown region.
In Russian literature this is called Parametric Voltage Stabilizer, the other type is called Compensating Voltage stabilizer, which uses a feedback from output to compare it with reference voltage to make the necessary adjustment.
thanks a lot for this...but I got a doubt, after the zener breakdown occurs, the voltage across it remains constant, but the current through it increases exponentially with the applied voltage. Can we say that after the breakdown the resistance of it will decrease exponentially?

In case of the Zener diode, in reverse bias, when we increase the voltage beyond Vz (Its Zener Voltage) then it tries to maintains the same voltage across it. But the current through the Zener diode increases. In reality the voltage slightly increases, as we increase the source voltage. And it is also evident from the Zener Curve in the reverse biased condition. But for academic purpose and even in some sort of applications the small increase in the voltage is acceptable and can be assumed as if the voltage across it remains constant. But at the same current through the diode increase. Because of that, the power dissipation across the diode increases. And if it goes beyond the rated value, it can damage the diode. So, when the source voltage increases, then one needs to ensure that the current through the diode is less than the Iz (max), the maximum allowable Zener Current. I hope it will clear your doubt.
No, as you can see, directly a load is connected after zener. Actually, after the rectification, the filtered output can be connected to zener diode. Considering ideal zener diode, it elemimates the ripple in the filtered output and output voltage across it remains the same. I hope, it will clear your doubt.
Just assume some value of load resistance, which you supposed to be using. And accordingly you can select other values. With that design, you can mention that, it will work for load upto let's say 1kΩ.
I think it's because normal PN junction diodes will get damaged when operated in the breakdown region. Zener diodes are spicial diodes which are designed to operate in their breakdown region. Looking up the two types of breakdowns, i.e. Avalanche breakdown and Zener breakdown may help you grasp a further understanding as to what makes Zener diodes special. Good luck mate.
Typically the load resistor is the load across which we require a constant voltage. It could be the input of some circuit or input stage of bigger circuit. During the analysis, it can be represented as the input impedance of that circuit. But here for simplicity, it is represented simply as load resistor. I hope it will clear your doubt.
Hi, I want to ask .can I connect a zenor diod across.a battery.to regulate charging .( Specialy 3.8 volt laptop battery in series .to get 12 volts. 3.8x4 =14.8. I want 12 volt. Thanks a lot .
I would suggest you to use a voltage regulator instead of the Zener diode. Of course, you can connect, but the practically, the Zener diode won't give you a constant voltage across it. Instead, you can use a regulator like LM 317.
To be frank .I want to connect laptop battery in bike (Yamaha rx100). I. Have connected few times works fine few months than battery became open. Presently again connected 4 in seris in to 3 line's .in gap of few day I take reading now crossed 17 volts .means it will not last..that's why I asked for diod
Is is the supply current. It will always be more than Iz. Since, Is= Iz+ IL. Therefore Is(max) can be more than Iz (max). I hope it will clear your doubt.
1. What would happen (w.r.t Example 1) if we select RL less than its minimum value. Let's say we connect RL with value of 50 ohm [but RL(min) is 125ohm] , what would happen to Vz/VL? Will it remain 5V or drop? 2. What would happen (w.r.t Example 1) if we use 5v zener diode and put 3v LED as RL in the circuit?? What would now be the voltage across zener diode / load (Vz/VL) ?

How can Is(max) be above Izm?
Is is the supply current. It will always be more than Iz. Since, Is= Iz+ IL. Therefore Is(max) can be more than Iz (max).
I hope it will clear your doubt.
please provide notes and make an app please.
Sir , if Iz is greater than Iz(max), then what happen?
It can damage the Zener diode.
power dissipated by the zener diode is very high and the diode may get destroyed
If Iz is greater than rated maximum, power dissipated as heat will damage the PN junction permanently....
can you provide us notes?
Nice
Upload next video sooooon....
what happen if Vth is less than the zener voltage?
If Vth is less than Zener Voltage, then the Zener Diode will act as an open circuit. And Vo = Vin.
I think Vin would be equal to Vs + VL (where VL = Vo).
Vin = Vs + Vo.
Please confirm.
1. What would happen (w.r.t Example 1) if we select RL less than its minimum value. Let's say we connect RL with value of 50 ohm [but RL(min) is 125ohm] , what would happen to Vz/VL? Will it remain 5V or drop?

Vi,Rs also can vary
what is the meaning of Izm means?
It is maximum allowed zener current.
